In the Vallejo area, this is #1 on the list of aquariums I am comfortable with buying fish from. The store is large and holds a lot of tanks so just going in to browse is fun! Against the left wall are 2 coral tanks with a lot of good looking stuff. On the right are rows of tanks, freshwater and saltwater. Everything looks clean and healthy! Prices are very good! As a hobbyist, I find that when looking for livestock, it is important to know the people selling the livestock too. The owner, Hung, is a young guy (late 20s/early 30s?) who use to shop at Lucky Ocean. He seems more relaxed about the "rules" of fish keeping and the advice he gave me on stocking and quarantine really put my mind at ease. His employee Victor is still inexperienced with the hobby since he couldn't answer too many of my questions, but I felt comfortable with him bagging my purchases for me - in the words of Hung "It'll take him forever, but all your crabs will have all their legs". They are both very approachable, despite their intimidating arm tattoos. Vallejo Aquarium is definitely worth the extra drive because a good quality fish store is hard to come by. Don't buy bargain fish, but with their prices, you'll be getting a good deal and a good fish. read more

I have been going to this place approximately 2 years now and have purchased most of my saltwater fish and equipment for my tank. The staff and the owner are well knowledgeable and friendly. They have most of the equipment you will need for your aquarium. This is my go to place for aquarium. However, when my protein skimmer died on me so I immediately contacted the owner and expressed my concern about my skimmer. He offered me a protein skimmer that is supposedly one of the best if not the best skimmer he ever used. Mind you, most of their supplies are old and just collecting dust. He claims that he uses it at home and at his store. Thus, I was excited and purchased the damn skimmer. He even offered 10% discount which he normally does. I asked few questions if it doesn't work well for my tank and he affirmed that if it doesn't meet my standards to return it "within a week". Again, he assures me that I will not be disappointed and I will love it. I installed the equipment and seems to be working just fine like what I expected. But then everyday I have to maintain the bubble level of the skimmer. We all know that the water evaporates every single day. The protein skimmer's water pump is installed almost half way through the skimmer. Therefore, when the water evaporates the skimmer will not work as good as when you just installed. Had I known this in the beginning I would have never bought the skimmer. My old skimmer's pump seats in bottom of the skimmer which you don't have to worry about water evaporation and no need to adjust the bubble levels. After 5 days of purchase I immediately called and expressed myself and asked if I can return the item. The owner said he can't accept it cuz it's been used. I completely understand that but what we have agreed on prior to purchasing the item is I can return it within a week. Specially if I'm not satisfied. Well I'm not satisfied so therefore I should be allowed to return the item. Needless to say, I am very disappointed. A promise is a promise and as a owner of the store should always commit to what he offered to his loyal customers. I hate to say this but I will never be coming back to this place. I understand using the ability of sales talk but don't commit to what was offered in the beginning and turned around refused what was agreed upon. read more

Vallejo aquarium just recently opened up in Vallejo, Im not from the area but I visited my friends house in Vallejo and he wanted to check this place out. I don't own any fishes but after checking out their huge salt water tank, I was convinced that I should start one! My friends bought some fishes that names escape me, but the asian dudes working there were able get me started on a simple tank. Well in the end I got a Betta aka the fighting fish. Might start my own personal Pokemon battles at home! I'm used to checking out 6th ave Aquairum which looks like a damned marine holocaust, but Vallejo Aquarium is very bright and inviting, plus they play very soothing adult contemporary instead of the hip hop crap at 6th ave. Aquarium. It's a shame they are not in the city but I have been going to Vallejo alot more frequantly. read more

This is an LFS that's worth the drive. Thanks to another Yelper for the tip. They have attentive and friendly staff and also have reasonable prices. They gave me advice on the care for my new coral. Best Aquarium store in the East and North Bay, possibly the entire Bay Area (I don't get much chance to go to SF or the South Bay). Huge selection of cichlids, lots of community fish, good amount of salt water fish and a great set of corals. They have all the essentials for setting up and maintaining an aquarium, and will spend time with you to diagnose any problems your aquarium might have. They will special order fish if they can find them for you. I really can't think of anything negative to say except that it's in Vallejo, and I no longer am - which is not their fault! read more

I love this aquarium... probably one of the best in the bay area! They definitely specialize in cichlids but overall have a great selection of fresh and salt water fish! The prices are pretty fair and the tanks are pretty clean! One of the workers told me they get new shipment of fish on Wednesdays so that is probably a good day to see a new selection. Their "deals" are usually a purchase of 2 or more for the discount. Highly recommended! read more

So I just started coming to this aquarium and quickly fell in love with the selection they had right out the gate. I'm new to the whole fish thing so I was taking advice from the employees and listen to their advice for starting off with community fish and was told that later, I can trade for store credit if I decided I wanted other fish. About 6 weeks in I got bored of community fish and realized I wanted to do salt water set up. I spoke with a gentlemen name chan and he explained everything about the salt water set up and broke down what I needed to buy to start it up ( for fish and coral). The Next time I came down there I brought all my fish that I had in the community tank to trade them in. I didn't want to deal with community fish anymore. That day I met someone I never seen before and right off the bat he started talking down about all the fish I brought in ( how they were sick and they needed "medication") He even looked at me and told me "your not getting a million dollars for these fish just to let you know" it was obvious he was trying to pull some kind of shady business. I told him I didn't care what he gave me for them just give me something. He told me I had to leave them there for 3 days then come back to see what he can do. I gave them a week. The next time I come in I'm ready to buy a whole salt water set up. 40 breeder, sump tank, skimmer, salt, coral, salt water fish and the expensive light Chan was showing me for the coral. I brought $1500 in with me that day ready to spend. When I asked about the fish they told me they all died and basically I wasn't getting s*** for them. The way they came at me pissed me off so bad that I will never go back to that aquarium again. it sucks because I really like the place but they're customer service was horrible. The only time I got good customer service was from Chan (the guy who showed me how to set up a salt water tank. I'm from Vallejo and this is the only local aquarium in this city but with my job I drive all over the bay so there's plenty of aquariums that better service my needs and aren't pulling these moves on me. Word of advice for the shop is treat your customers better. Give your customers a good experience. Let them leave feeling good and that they should come back. read more

Vallejo Aquarium has very good prices. They are super helpful when choosing fish that are compatible with your reef system. They are cool because they sometimes will trade a fish or animal that is not working out for you. ( After a holding period) This has tremendously helped me when an animal does not suit my needs after all. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. I just picked up a 55 gallon kit and some gravel to set up, and for my 8 years of keeping fish I always return to this local fish store and I am always pleased with the customer service! The fish are always healthy and the owner and workers always have answers to any questions, and in my 8 years of experience I can still learn a lot from the guys working here. I bought a young female green terror from the vallejo aquarium 4 years ago and she is growing and growing and I am happy to say that she is from the vallejo aquarium, I cannot wait to set up the new 55 gallon that I purchased from the vallejo aquarium! By far the best place for fish and fish supply within a 20 mile radius. Actually even better than the ones in SF and Sac just because they offer things so much cheaper. However, they do not carry rare fishes but you'll have to order them, so it's all good. All the staff are friendly, great stock of fishes, and the cheapest in the area. They will also do lay-away plans if you plan on to buy a big fish tank or an expensive filter. read more

But after talking to the friendly staff and learning a lot of new things about tank ownership, we suddenly became very interested in creating a coral tank of our own. This is the only place that I get my fish from. Thuy have excellent customer service. The owner is a really nice and friendly guy. The selection of fish is incredible. Always has healthy fish. Has rare species that you can't find at Petco. The cichlid selection is huge. From small rams, to dovii there is always an abundance of cichlids. The workers have good knowledge of fish. They also have a very impressive collection of wood for sale. Thier driftwood is very nice. There is also a very good selection of plants. And in the back, there are tanks for sale ranging in sizes from 5 to 180 gallons. Their is a good selection if food that the employees will inform you about. They have a good selection of aquarium hardware( filters, heaters, air pumps, etc). The store has a nice collection of show tanks with two huge tanks that I would estimate are 800 gallons each. They also have a planted tank near the entrance with very nice fish, and a 180 gallon African cichlid tank near the back. I will conclude by saying this is the best place to by fish in the northeast bay. Whether you are starting up a new tank or adding fish to an established tabk , I highly recommend you come pay a visit to the Vallejo aquarium! read more

We've bought our fish here. A few brichardi's and after a few months, we got some fry. They were helpful in telling us which food to get. They said they were willing to buy our babies but at wholesale prices, who knew the markup? Plus, it wouldn't have been worth much since we didn't have a lot of babies. Clean spacious LFS. They have lots of corals and sw fish. They also have a lot of equipment and additives to choose from. All kinds of inverts and even some nice stars. Met with one of the owners Dave who lives in the city and use to work at a good LFS in the Richmond district of SF. Gave me a good deal on some food. Awesome place, just wish they were closer to me. l live in San Francisco and l learned of this store from a friend. He told me to check out Vallejo aquarium. customer service was great and the prices are very fair. l had bought two tangs there for 20 dollar each . Two Sailfin tang for 40 dollar that is a deal. they have a huge selection of fresh water fish. they have two like 400 gallon tanks with corals. it was fill to the top. l would say there were at least 160 corals there. very cheap as well compared to the sf store that l am custom to going to. read more

I was a strictly freshwater guy, then i found out about this place and checked it out. This place has a lot of good knowledgeable workers there. they showed me the ins and outs of salt water setups, and i gave it a try. I now love salt water. They have great prices and selection on their corals, fishes, invertebrates, and food. Their selections on corals can vary from week to week, but if you really want something they will do their best to get it. I purchased most of my corals from them and never had any problems with pest. I go there almost every two weeks now. Last month i purchased a hard to find golden gorgonian sea rod. It was so nice. i got it and had problems with it since its a non-photosynthetic coral. I asked them for help and they gave me a few tips and its doing great now. read more

Vallejo Aquarium is a hidden gem in the bay area. This place reminds me of an old school local aquarium store back when there were many around the bay area. Hung and his staff have great customer service and are very knowledgeable about what they sell. From beautiful marine livestock from their 2 huge coral reef tanks to their abundance of fresh water fish choices, you will more likely find what you are looking for here. I personally have a collection of several varietals of peacock african cichlids and 95% of them came from Vallejo Aquarium. They have rare species you won't see anywhere else and if they don't have it, Hung will do his best to source it for you. This place is great. They have a pretty good variety of fish and the staff is very knowledgeable about what they do. If you are looking for something that they don't have, go talk to the owner, Hung, and he will get it for you (if it is legal). I am happy that a small town like Vallejo has a fish store as nice as this one. Also if you need tank maintenance one of their employees does tank maintenance. The owner is smart, enthusiastic, and very helpful. The selection is good. The shop is as hot and muggy as a sauna....if that kind of thing bothers you. It bothers me. There seems to be a group of young guys who hang out there -- and may in fact work there -- who have ZERO customer service skills. They are sometimes rude and annoying if they bother to talk to you at all. Ask for the owner, who is ALWAYS very accommodating. They often leave dead fish in the tanks. I would first like to say that this place knows there stuff. Almost everyone who works here can answer my questions and if not they ask the person in charge. The prices and inexpensive which means they are cheap and sometimes cheaper than the fish stores in San Francisco. Another plus would be the healthy fish and corals. I've been to this place twice and I've spoke to almost everyone and they gave me the same extravagant information for taking care of my saltwater fish tank and corals. And did I also mention there customer service ? The customer service is off the roof here. Right when I walked in I got greeted and Ive been asked several times if I had any questions by the employees. They always tend to keep customers satisfied before doing anything else and all my questions were answered. After shopping at other local fig stores, this is the best one I've been to. One last comment I would like to say is about one of the employees. He was the manager on the 2nd day I came in, but before that, his other co workers refer to him as the coral expert. And my oh my they were right. I came in to ask about corals and what try eat an he showed me products and even told me about refridgerated products that they don't carry but they could find it in other LFS. Joel is his name and if u have any questions on corals he is the man to talk to. For a young adult his age, he has progressed his knowledge on corals than some of the peoe who have done this for years.
