I've waited a year to write this review to allow time for me to calm down. I went to get a parakeet a year ago so mine would have a friend. I bought my first from Petco for $30 and spent a few months hand training him, so it seemed like a great idea to buy a real "hand trained one." It was clear the bird I bought was from a breeder, not the owners. So I made this 2 stars with the hope and belief that the owners have better standards than their breeders. They didn't have a box or cage for me to buy or use to take her home, so they found one eventually and poked holes in it and handed her to me. $90 seemed expensive but I was ok with paying for the "hand training" I brought her home and bought a second cage for her to get acclimated for about a month or two with my other bird. It was clear she was terrified of hands. And she never makes any noises, the complete opposite of my first bird. About a month later my first bird got sick and died suddenly. I assume because the other bird was sick, he was only 8 months old. Now it's been a year and the bird just sits in the cage, silently. Never chirping, never climbing on my finger. If you're looking for a parakeet, go to Petco. They are great. Big birds, may be good here, I hope - bc they are expensive! I'd shop around and spend a lot of time interacting with the bird, the color of its droppings etc. read more

Lupin is the sweetest companion, he has made my life so much brighter! He was immediately comfortable with sitting on my finger from the hand feed training. The owner was very upfront and honest about which parakeets were not ready to be adopted yet, so he made sure I got just the right one. You can tell that the cages have not been cleaned in a long time because they are covered with dried bird poop. The woman I spoke to was rude when I questioned her about the dirty cages. I also don't believe they have full knowledge about parrots. I would never recommend this place. I feel sorry for the birds. read more

The owner lady even called us after a week making sure everything is fine with the bird - it just shows how much they care. I am absolutely livid. I called them three months ago to make a boarding reservation for my bird for this weekend. After three unreturned phone calls, someone finally called back and took my reservation. I even went up there to change the drop-off time myself when I realized a few weeks later that I wouldn't be able to drop him off on a Thursday since they're closed. I went up there today in plenty of time (I arrived at 3:35; their posted closing is 4pm), and the woman there said "we're closed." I said that I had a reservation for him to be boarded and I only needed to drop him off. She simply shook her head! She refused to take him, citing that she had no security and there was someone not there. I reiterated that I made this appointment months ago. She replied that I should find a neighbor or something to watch him...if I had a neighbor to watch him, or were comfortable leaving him alone in my house even if I had a neighbor I trusted, I would have done that (parrots don't do well when left alone - or do these people know that?). Then - the cherry on top - she said that I "had jeopardized my bird." I can't even. I made this reservation months in advance, I went in person to extend it, I verified it a couple of weeks beforehand, and this woman tells me that it is now my fault that my parrot has nowhere to go this weekend? I wish I could give this place zero stars. Do not, under any circumstances, give this place your business - they clearly do not want it. read more

I drove all the way to get my bird groomed as I have done the last 4 years to find out the groomer quit. I believe the owner said to me no grooming and I'm busy and turned back to her computer left me standing looking stupid. It was a waste of my time on my only day off. Where do i start? They had a ad out saying they were buying African Greys and i responded because i had a pair that i couldn't keep at the moment. So i talked to Elritya for a couple of days before i took my birds in and i sent her pictures of my birds and told her what condition they were in. And im sorry to say but she can't remember who she talks to and what for. She confused me with alot of people over the phone to begin with. So when i took my birds in after traveling for more than 2 hours her husband John was there and he was NOT friendly and mind you they run this business how? He looked at my birds and offered me a price way lower than i was told and i think this is how they TRICK people who travel far distance just to get there. I said no and left. It was ridiculous they offered me gas money which i didn't take because i was more upset because of what the birds had to go through. I mean seriously is this a joke? While i was there i was talking to one of the girls who hand feeds and tames the birds and i told her i had a type of bird at home and she said " OH I HATE THOSE" this is coming from the person who is taking care of those birds? did she forget that she's in the bird business? it was sad i had nothing to say to that...If you are looking to sell or buy your birds don't go here they are full of bs... they lie and that place itself wasn't clean...Avoid this place for your birds sake. PLEASE READ!!!!! The Feather Farm is GREAT!!!! ;D They take care of their birds very well. Though their breeder birds could have a better cage. We got our first Conure there! He is perfect! They do nail and wing clippings for free. The employees are very friendly. The parrots there are, too! They have very low prices for everything. The birds are well taken care of and are all taken out of their cages (which is good.) They have great advice if you ever have problems with your bird. Oh, and by the way, the "box" that the person was referring to is called a breeder box; it's so the employees can hand feed the babies after they are hatched. This place is amazing, and this is definitely a place you should go for a bird. That is where i am gonna go once i save up to get an African Grey. Several months ago I went to the Feather Farm to purchase a new cage and the prices are amazing, you cant beat them. However I was very disappointed at the conditions for the birds especially the "breeders", stuck in just wire cages with not much more than a perch and a "box:" to sleep in. It was freezing and some of the birds were straining to get into the sun to warm up. This was very sad and disturbing. Most of the water bowls and food bowls both inside and out were filthy not to mention the birds inside had several weeks of pooh at the bottoms of their cages. There was eucalyptus leaves all around which lead me to believe this was to hide the smell, very disappointing. It looked as though most were fed a steady diet of seed which is just a small part of what their diets should consist of. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable I will say that, but I think for first time bird buyers that these conditions may lead people to think this is the norm and it's OK...IT IS NOT. Personally I think they had way too many birds and were unable to keep the conditions more sanitary. read more

I'm sorry to give a negative review to this small local business, but I agree with comments pointing out how dirty the cages are. According to my bird's vet (and everything I read), droppings need to be cleaned out regularly for the bird's health. This is definitely not done here, as the cages are literally crusty with poop. I was also surprised to see large bunches of millet hanging inside most of the cages which, again, my vet warns against. Although many birds (including mine) love millet, it's an incomplete and fattening food and therefore should be used only as an occasional treat. read more

I put a deposit down on a Caique in February and its the best little bird I've ever had. His name is Danny Boy and boy is he fun! I would visit him every week to every other week as much as I could during the process of paying for him. I was able to pay him off in a month and from there take him home! They made the adoption easy and even set me up with some food and toys and a few first nail/beak trims free! Definitely the place to go! A lot of people complain about the mess. I think it depends on the time of day you go having gone there multiple times from February to March. Birds as you know are pooping machines so things get dirty fast. I've been there before the worker does her daily clean and after and its astounding the difference it makes. It just happens; They're birds. Danny is the best purchase I've ever made though. I plan to bring my mom by for her birthday and get her a couple of finches or a canary. :D read more

EXCELLENT!! I was researching to get a Sun Conure and came upon this farm. I called and checked their hours and over the weekend, we went. This place is EXCELLENT!! The people are great and warm. They are all helpful. Arlyta is great. She showed us around - looking at the birds, bird cages and even showed us feeding of the baby bird. I fell in love with it. We placed our name on the list when the babies will be available. We bought a cage and some accessories from her at the Bird Mart yesterday (she told us to buy the cage at the bird mart because it will be on a discounted price.) 10 years ago I kenneled my 2 hand fed African Greys (which I bred myself) at the Feathered Farm. I called every day to ask if they had trimmed the nails of my birds. I was told no. Then 4 days later when I called, I was told by the male owner that one had died! this owner did not even have the decency to call me personally. He said that the bird was very thin! Now this owner expert, had stated that I had to kennel both birds together. Even though I protested, stating the birds were brother and sister, the owner insisted, as an EXPERT. An autopsy revealed that my bird had starved to death! The Feathered Farm offered to me, at a cost of $500 to me, another wild African Grey! The only letter I received from Feathered Farm was from their attorney in Chicago disputing my charges. STAY AWAY FROM THESE PEOPLE! THEY ARE NOT EXPERTS. I love this place and will visit again when we go to Napa. I got my Gemma (African Grey Congo) 5 months old in June 1995 at a reasonable price compared to those in the pet store. She talks a lot, ex. love you mama, she counts 1 to 4 only, nite nite, when the phone rings she said hello, want shower, and she stays with my brother too and now he said Uncle Frank where are you. That's the longest word she said, etc. I talk to her like a human being. She loves rock music and love to dance, watch TV shows together "Dancing with the Stars, Singing shows etc. and her cage in our bedroom at night. During the day she is out of her cage in the living room when we are home. We have a cat too and they are friends. She ask for food , said want grapes, carrots, rice, water, etc. For all the feathered friends I like the African grey congo the smartest, she calls me mama and said bye when she hear the noise of the car key etc. Am not kidding. We we got married in Las Vegas she was with us in the car (back seat) for 8 hrs. It's a smooth ride. Am so happy and proud of her and she is the best feathered friend great company in the house. this is where we got our first baby! she is the pretty girl in my profile picture there, yup, thats her! we drove up to napa cause we heard they had weaned green cheek conures, and as soon as we arrived we knew it was a pretty cool place. its a little house with a huge yard almost to the point of being a little farm. in the "garage" they have a huge selection of high quality bird cages very VERY resonably priced (i saw the exact one i had for HALF the price. damnit!) we walk out up toward the house and see rows of breeder cages full of parrots (they also run a conservation program breeding psittacines) and roaming bands of chickens, ducks and other fowl... we checked out the flock, all happy chattering birdies, no screaming or plucking anywhere! how often do you see a bird store like that? so i walk up to one cage with a snuggly pair of african greys and say hello handsome, he looks me in the eye and says "bGAWK cluck cluck cluck" i nearly peed my pants laughing so hard. so we go inside the house and ask about the babies and we are shown into the 'living room'. it had been completly converted to a birdy paradise with climbing toys ceiling to floor. they only had a few birds, maybe 4 sun conures and 3 green cheeks and a few others in cages. we focused on the three green cheek conures and realized we were in love, but which one? it was clear they were well cared for and had personal attention each day. some baby bird can be scared of people, even hand raised ones. these guys were ready to play and wanted our attention soooo badly. after an hour we decided. not the shy one, not the agresive one. and we chose right! the service was awesome, the people knew their birds. they sent us home with a really excellent book on conures and two pounds of her food. read more

WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER!!! I have been doing business with The Feather Farm for almost 13 years. I am a bird breeder myself and have bought every nest box from them over the years, amounting to thousands of dollars. Well, this is my last purchase ever! I bought 2 macaw boxes on 11/22/13 thru their website and put in notes that I needed them ASAP. Well, 10 days later, no boxes and no call. So I had to call and inquire. Turns out they had my order but never processed it....OK, I am annoyed but figured I will get them soon. They said they would ship out the same day, which was a Monday (of course, no offer of any discount for their mistake). Finally Saturday they arrived! One was great, the other broken and completely unusable. I immediately emailed photos and asked for a replacement to be sent and a pick up issued for the broken box. A few days later I get a response that the pickup is issued, but they won't send the replacement until the old one is back...so that would put me close to 30 days out from my original order. I called and explained that was not acceptable and was told they won't ship a new one. They suggested I find a friend with metal working equipment to fix it...really? Then they suggested I take it to a metal shop and pay to have it fixed...ON MY OWN COST!!!! Are you kidding? Then they said I can pay for yet another box, have it sent Monday (today being Friday and all), and when they get back the broken box, they will credit me back. So I have to pay again for your mistake??? There was no budging, they would not get me a box without another payment or waiting so I had no choice but to pay AGAIN!!!! I am now searching for a new supplier and will be sure to pass the experience along to all my breeder friends (along with the contact info for the new nest box supplier). I understand things happen, but they had my credit card on file (in case I was shady and didn't ship back the old box) and still refused to in any way make up for their complete lack of professionalism. read more

I purchased a hand-fed baby Umbrella Cockatoo from The Feather Farm just recently. My words on this screen do not give justice to the way Arlyta and her staff handled the entire process of my purchase. My baby was cared for by Arlyta herself. She made sure that weaning was done to perfection before she let me take my baby home. It was hard to leave her as I wanted her home, but I knew it was best for my "Stella" and I am so glad I followed the careful direction of The Feather Farm. Arlyta calls me every other day to make sure I am doing ok at home with Stella and has even asked that I bring her in for the next few weeks for weight checks just to be extra careful she remains as healthy as when I brought her home. The Feather Farm made sure I had everything I needed at home to make the transition as easy as possible and even tossed in many free items. They offer free wing and nail clipping for the rest of my birds life and stand behind their birds 100%. I would not purchase a bird any where else now that I know of this hidden treasure right in my back yard. read more

I just visited The Feather Farm today. And I have to say I am thoroughly impressed. Our visit was brief, but so informative. I walked in, and was greeted by the staff and just handed birds! It was great! Almost instantly every bird I was handed I got a flood of information with it. The owner began showing all the birds in sight, listing the good and bad about each, showing us training tips and even fetching some baby African greys from the nursery! We didn't ask for any of it, it all just happened. Let me tell you, they do not skimp on any details and are very knowledgeable about their birds. They run a bird store, but it's also treated like these birds are their own individual pets too. They put a lot of love and passion into raising these parrots and it shows. It's a very long drive for me to get up there, but I was not disappointed. I would recommend them to anybody if they're willing to take a bit of a drive to get there.
