Hands down my favorite fish store! Not only because its a local business its also because their fish are kept in maintained tanks and they have wide varieties (saltwater as well) . I've purchased 2 Common Plecos, 2 Convict Cichlids, and 1 Male Betta, 3 female bettas, pair of Angelfish, 2 geophagus, and 2 freshwater catfish. And all of them were in their absolute best condition! I never write reviews on yelp but I felt I needed to after my great visit at Vallejo Aquarium. I have been a fish hobbyist since I was 10 years old and now I'm still one, at 22. I purchased fish from around the Bay Area such as pet shoppe, petco (fairfield, vallejo), featherer pets, all about fish, and even walmart searching for the cheapest prices and best quality fish. I honestly cannot emphasize this enough, it is better to spend a bit more money on quality fish than hunt for the cheapest prices and eventually come home to find not only your new fish dead but your whole aquarium invested with ich (a common contagious disease in fish). Vallejo Aquarium's staff is very knowledgeable and I have never failed to leave the store learning something new. These guys know all the ins and outs about fish and are super friendly. We came here on the highly valued recommendation of the staff at Lucky Ocean here in SF. We planned a day to make the hour-long trip to Vallejo in a Zipcar this past Saturday to continue our search for unique species of African Cichlids and possibly a non-cichlid tank-mate or two for our new tank. We already had 5 Cichlids we had gotten from some of the fish shops in SF and we had waited a week for those guys to settle and the bacteria in the tank to equalize before adding more. The nice guy at Lucky Ocean told us that Cichlids have become more of a novelty nowadays and that Vallejo Aquarium was THE place to go in the entire Bay Area for Cichlid enthusiasts, so of course we had to hit it up! We had seen the video on their website, and the pictures here on Yelp! and were very excited to see this store. Unfortunately, when we got there it was nothing like we expected... We started perusing the Cichlid area when one of the two kids working there came up to ask if she could help us. We told her what we were looking for, and she showed us where to look, but for some reason she also told us we could mix African and South American Cichlids in the same tank. This made us dubious as to any more of her advice, since mixing those two types of fish, while definitely possible, would only be for the most advanced and adventurous of aquarist, and for her to just suggest it in passing to patrons she knew so little about seemed careless. (And maybe a little desperate to sell fish...) As we continued to browse, we noticed some Synodontis Catfish of unknown origin. They were in a frenzy at the top of the water and I mentioned it to the girl. She assured me over and over again that they just wanted to be fed and if we went away they would stop. Yet after leaving that tank for 5-10 minutes they were still frenzied. We noticed there was at least one dead fish they were cannibalizing... Hungry indeed... :S Then the guy came over to help us and while his fish knowledge seemed to be a bit more than the girl's he didn't really do much in terms of helping us find what we were looking for and seemed more interested in just getting us out of the store as quickly as possible. After his short conversation with us he never said a word to us, and ran and hid in the back room until we left the store. We picked out 6-7 fish, including one of the catfish (since Syno Catfish were one of our hopefuls for non-Cichlid tank-mates). The rest were all assorted Cichlids. We also wanted to get some more cave-like decorations and plants for our fish to hide in, but the selection in that department was completely bare. We also needed a less intense bulb for our lamp and they had nothing to offer us as far as that goes either... So we paid for our fish and took the long trek home. Remember, that was Saturday afternoon. Now later Sunday evening, after our fish had been adapted to the new tank water/environment, we noticed one of the Electric Yellow Labs we purchased had been just mildly swimming vertically all day and night, and upon closer inspection he was completely missing his left pelvic fin! Mind you, we know who our tank-bullies are, and who they pick on. We only have one 50 gallon tank in our home, and since it's a new tank for us we watch it quite obsessively since the fish have such fun personalities. So we keep our eyes on the fish (whom we have lovingly taken to calling "Derpy" since he has funky eyes along with his awkward swimming habits) for another night/day and while he IS able to swim normally when he wants, he just seems....wrong. Besides, he has a FIN MISSING! :( So I called up Vallejo Aquarium and told them what happened. I believe I talked to one of the owners whose name was Han or something similar sounding. He straight up told me our own fish ate Derpy's fin completely off in one day. :| Seriously. I told him no one messes with Derpy and Derpy just sits in his corner all day/night doing his treadmill swimming while looking so sad and pathetic with his missing fin. He said, "Well you know they probably got him when you turned out the lights besides, why wouldn't you have noticed a missing fin when you bought it?" ........... We bought like 7 fish from you dude, you really think we are going to inspect every scale and fin?! Okay, I get it, you don't want to take responsibility for a $10 (max) fish. Are your sales really suffering THAT much? Albeit, he DID offer to replace Derpy after I kept pestering him about it. But after all that, we've grown to love Derpy and we almost feel he was a "rescue" fish since Vallejo Aquarium was such a horrible place. Don't believe ANY of the videos or pics you see online, VA is so disgustingly dirty, and their tanks are too. Dead fish in several aquariums, dirty tanks, dishonest and uneducated sales people, and owners who blame the customer for their own bad practices... I wouldn't touch this place with a 10 foot pole. We'll stick with Lucky Ocean from now on. read more

I have found yet another reason why I should write about the guys at the Vallejo Aquarium. I had been in the market for some tire track eels for a couple of months and the other stores didn't have them. I had even ordered it at another place but it never came in. Frustrated I went over to the Vallejo Aquarium and spoke to Mr. Hung. I had my little tropical fish book with colorful pictures and I showed Hung the eel that I wanted. This is after my 3rd visit there and I had little if no history or purchasing fish or anything from his store. He asked how many I'd like and the size and he told me that he'd call me when they arrived. A couple of days later I received his call and true to his word there they were. The tire track eels looked exactly like the photo in my little tropical fish book. Actually his eels had more color. Hung had hand picked the eels and instead of purchasing 2, I purchased all 8 of the spiny eels. Thank you again Hung, for your sincere service and for taking the time when your competitors had not. After we installed the uv sterilizer on our tank, the bf and I wanted to check out aquarium we never been to before and get some feesh. Thanks to fellow yelper, lily, we decided to go with her recommendation and check this place out. Very well stocked for freshwater and saltwater. Love the cichlids selections, and they have non-aggressive cichlids that are suitable for community tank. We picked up 3 beautiful german rams, and some gouramis, we were happy campers. The owner is more than just an "owner", he is a personality that Vallejo should be proud to promote as one of their own. A small business like this where people come, not just to buy fish and supplies, but to be part of something more, a community. We share a common interests, fish, but what ends up happening is that we are sucked in by the fish, but we come back for the friendly "abuse" haha. Finally, a GOOD aquarium/fish store thats within 5 minutes away. When I was younger, I was addicted to keeping fish. Community fish of all types, and when I got older, kept various cichlids from all parts of the world. When I was able to make money, I blew it on setting up salt water tanks and mini reefs. Over the years I KNOW I've spent thousands and thousands. When I left home I couldn't take my tanks with me so I donated most of my fish to the Academy and gave away or sold my lot. Now I've pretty much settled and the fish keeping must commence... Ever since I've visited this store.... One of the salesman, one cool cat named Dave is very knowledgeable. The store set up is neat and very clean. Despite the high humidity they have an AC! Fish are split up by categories/aggressives and community type. Corals on the left side. The prices are unbelievablely reasonable. And so are the tank setups. Tanks and supplies are in the back and they have all th different filtration systems available. Anything can be ordered given time, and they even have a DIY wet-dry filtration system... now that's hard-core and any respectable aquarist has to give props.... As you can see, I'm pretty stoked about all this and I've once again been bitten by the aquarium bug. read more

I've been on hiatus with this place for quite some time since I'm no longer staying in the Vallejo area. When I used to visit, they didn't have much selection. I've come back in search of a replacement porcupine puffer (RIP Puff Daddy) and I was happy to see that this place has definitely improved in the saltwater fish selection. The service has always been great, I just didn't frequent them often because they didn't have the fish I was in the market for. The staff is super friendly and very knowledgeable. Another plus is that they aren't just after your money, they'll tell you if a fish is worth buying or not. For example, there were some sharks that were in their quarantine tank and the following week, they were promoted to the community tanks. I inquired about them and before buying, the guy wanted to see if it ate or not. Unfortunately it didn't eat so the guy advised against buying it. Also, I considered throwing a cleaner wrasse in my tank but he said not to because it'll just get eaten. Thanks for saving me some skrill!! This place is definitely worth a visit if you're an aquarium enthusiast. Call ahead and find out if they have what you want before making the trek out there. One cool thing is that if you're looking for a specific fish and they don't have it, they'll get it for you and call you when it comes in. read more

I visited Vallejo Aquarium today. The first time. The owner Hung (I hope I spelled that right ) was emptying boxes of fish from his morning shipmemt. He let me in to look around before he actually opened. I was there as some of my Cichlids have Sunken belly and he was very helpful in picking out the right medications. Two words, "Wow & "Wow". An absolute amazing selection of fish, some I've never seen or even heard of. He specializes in African Cichlids. The place is clean, fish tanks immaculate, and the fish looked very healthy. He had received a shipment that morning of some amazing Africans, Haps & Peacocks, and I wanted to buy a few. He told me to wait a few days, make sure everyone is ok, no ich, no other issues and then he'd sell me the fish. Blew me away. None of his fish are juiced. Some had great color, some did not,.most likely do to stress and shipping. However, one of the most friendly shops I've every visited. I will be back..soon, very soon. Thank you. First of all, I am extremely picky when it comes to fish stores. Nothing worse then buying an un healthy fish and bringing it home and having it die. TOTALLY DIFFERENT EXPERIENCE HERE AT VALLEJO AQUARIUM! When I walked in I was greeted and welcomed and asked If they could help me with anything. After looking around the coral and the fish looked extremely healthy and not to mention the huge variety they offer. Due my great experience here I have gone back and I am pleased to say not one of the fish I have gotten from Vallejo Aquarium has died. All are alive and healthy. I do have to mention I believe his name is Joel, VERY helpful and knowledgeable. I had so many different questions in setting up my tank and which fish would be good around each other. After leaving I felt peace of mind that I with the help of Joel made the right decisions and sure enough I did. My tank is awesome all thanks to Vallejo Aquarium!!!!! read more

I always used to go to the local petco, but after converting to saltwater I wanted help from people with knowledge. Hung knows all that can be. They never force you to buy a fish or product or try to convince you. They always remind you patience is key when fish keeping! I've gotten a Yellow Tang and 2 Clownfish and they're happy and healthy. Everything you need to know about turtles, tropical, fresh water fishes is resting on their helpful shoulders. If you want, they can build you a tropical tank from scratch and provide an education on proper care, lighting, and design. They are just about the most friendly people you'll meet; they'll service you and your fishes with their warm homely personalities. There are also a handful of regular customers if you'd want to go in there to hang out with fellow fish lovers. The store carries a variety of fresh and salt water fish. They have two lovely tanks of coral and tropical fish sitting in front. These guys also carry a variety of supplies including tanks, foods, medicines, and plants. If they don't carry something you want, the staff is more than happy to help you look elsewhere. Customers do enjoy a great benefit of having the option to specially order something from their wide network of warehouses, warehouse, and outsource vendors. I was using Yelp to peruse the listings off all the aquarium stores in my area; and saw that a place called Vallejo Aquarium was receiving consistently positive reviews. My interest was piqued, so I decided to pay a visit. It was well worth a drive down from Fairfield! This is a mom and pop shop, while a bit industrial and dirtier than your local pet store, makes up for the difference in customer attention and to the quality and variety of fish available. This store literally has fish I had never seen before in an aquarium store. I ended up purchasing 2 German Rams to add to my aquarium collection - one regular ram and one 'Electric Blue,' which is a relatively new genetically modified variety. Very nice! I mentioned to the cashier that I had Platy fry that I was looking to get rid of, as my tank didn't have room for them, and they told me to bring them down and they'd give me store credit if they lived 3 days. Pricing is very reasonable. Cant say enough about this place. We drive the 25 miles and bridge tolls because we just find the place to treat you like family. If they don't have answers they will try and find them for you. No high pressure sales which is very important to us. They carry fresh water as well but we are saltwater people. No complaints and their knowledge is very good, not as good as mine because I've been in the hobby for over 26 years and own a 500 gallon, 300 gallon, 210 gallon and 110 gallon tanks. These guys go beyond their job for their customers. About 7 years ago, my 5 year old daughter was playing with her dinosaur and accidentally threw it up on the awning. Amazing place with amazing people working there! I live in walnut creek, while not that far, it still takes a good 30-40 minutes to get to Vallejo aquarium and despite having 2 other fish stores much closer to me, I will always go to Vallejo aquarium! First reason is the stellar customer service. From the owner (hung) to all other employees (Joanna, fino, and Darrell), they have been nothing but kind patient and awesome to deal with. They're not pushy sales people. In fact one time, Hung told me to stop adding to my "shopping cart" and limit the purchase so I can see how my tank does first. What shop owner does that? A person that cares, that's who. I just started my first saltwater tank and they have taken the time to educate me. I visit this store a minimum of 2-3 times a month and each time they've spent close to an hour with me in understanding the types if fish and which are reef safe, and/or right for my tank. I've called them with questions and they've helped me over the phone. And the best reason to come here are the prices. I have compared them to the other two fish stores (near my house) and Vallejo aquarium is BY FAR cheaper. In some cases, cheaper by 50%. Check these guys out. Went in today I myself only own lizards and had heard about this store so I decided to check it out. I walked in and was shocked I forgot I was in a store, I haven't seen many better aquarium setups at local exotic pet shops. Like I said "I myself only own lizards" while I decided to look around. I found my favorite section, the fake plants. I ended up buying a lava rock with a fake plant protruding from it. I was approached by while debating whether to buy it, the me and him started talking about how my geckos were about to begin breeding and I need sand. I ended up buying a 10 pound bag of very very small rocks. At the register we started talking about his Uromastyx and how many employees at chain pets store's don't know anything about the animals they are selling. I saw some really good reviews of this store so I decided to pay a visit. As soon as I walked in the door i was welcomed with friendliness, but that quickly turned to disappointment. As I browsed the saltwater fish, the 3 employees seemed more interested in goofing off than taking care of their aquariums. In one tank a beautiful blue tang was laying lifeless at the bottom of the tank. As i continued to browse, two clownfish also lay at the bottom of the tank, and one of them was being devoured by other fish. Another tank had a decaying cardinal fish stuck to the filtration while a tank was floating upside down and breathing heavily. The tank below it had brown gunk, and was very grotesque. Not sure I can go back when Albany Aquarium and Tropical Fish Store (both in El Cerrito) have well kept healthy fish in their tanks and the owners are concerned about keeping the fish healthy! read more

Told my hubby that I saw there's a Vallejo aquarium downtown and we wanted to check it out. The store was spacious and well set up. They specialize in cichlids. They have it set up that you'll see the aggressive type fish up in the front and the community fish are towards the back. They had some big beautiful green terrors, which are my favorite.
