Hot Food Steam Table

I stopped in here a couple of times. Once, I tried their pancit (Filipino Noodles). I thought they were ok. Ensaymada - sweet and savory bun. It tasted fresh to me. Service: The service is friendly. They explained what they have or what's popular.

Pan De Ube

Super disappointed in how I was treated here. Upon walking in, the two women working there looked at my husband and I up and down (I'm assuming to see if we were Filipino, which we're not). I waited behind someone else that just bought something. When she finished, I walked up and asked if there were any turon/banana egg rolls left. The woman at the counter said that there's no more, quietly, so I said "huh?" And she said "no more" and looked away. I asked her if there would be more tomorrow and she said "don't know." Again, she said it quietly and looked away, and I was confused as to how she wouldn't know if they would have some tomorrow... So I wanted to make sure I heard her right, because we wanted to come back tomorrow to buy some and I was hoping to find out the time they would have them. So I said "you don't know?" And she said "don't know." Needless to say, we will never return and will not ever recommend this place ever again. We bought 50 turons for a party just last week, too. So bummed that we supported them last week with this type of service we received today. For anyone else looking for a place to get delicious turon, Gabrielle's Food Market is across the street and theirs is just as good with MUCH BETTER service.

Turon

**Review based strictly on VCB's Turon** We stopped by Valerio's City Bakery since my family was having a gathering. Since this bakery is known for having delicious turon [crispy Filipino banana lumpia with caramel] I couldn't think of a better opportunity to give it a try. These babies are high in demand and although there may be a potential wait, DO IT!! This dessert is long in size and the taste is balanced by the not so overly sweet banana found in the center and the sweet syrupy drizzle found on the outer skin. The highlight of this purchase: they stay crispy for hours on end!!!!! 3 stars overall because the business could be a lot warmer and more welcoming to patrons. CASH ONLY so come well prepared.

The English translation of turo-turo is point-point, which means you literally point at hot & ready-cooked entrees of your choice. On any given day, the line up behind the counter can range from Chicken or Pork Adobo, Sisig (chopped and seasoned pig parts mixed with onions and chilies), Sinigang (tamarind-based sour soup), or Pinakbet (mixed vegetables cooked with shrimp paste). They also serve silog breakfast plates in the morning. Make sure to visit early in the day because dishes will run out. I always hope my favorites are behind the glass when I visit... -Their Bistek reminds me of home-cooked comfort food. I can't have enough of this citrusy beef steak dish topped with caramelized onions, or slightly raw. -For my vegetable dish of choice, their Laing hits the spot with the mild spiciness and creaminess of stewed taro leaves in coconut milk and shrimp paste. -Pancit here is top notch and mom-approved! Definitely one of the better pancit noodle dishes in the area, and they give you a good amount in their combo plates. -I'm not a Caldereta fan, but their version of this rich tomato-based stew converted me. Yes to both beef or goat! I appreciate the other dishes that you normally don't see at Filipino restaurants, like Dinakdakan (a cousin of Sisig), Beef Pinapaitan with tripe (not as bitter as I expected), and Igado (when I feel like liver). Next up is their lechon! For now, gonna drown in my own drool.

I've been to their San Jose location before, but when I heard they had a pop-up at the Safeway on Gellert Ave in South San Francisco, I had to drop by. The quality? Still top-notch. I came for the shawarma, siomai, BBQ, and tokwat baboy, and every bite felt like home. This is comfort food at its finest, mouth-watering, freshly made, and seasoned with the kind of care you can taste. The Sago't Gulaman was perfectly refreshing, balancing out all the savory goodness. What made it even better was Ate Ems herself greeting us. It felt like visiting your neighborhood street vendor back in the Philippines, where the food is made with love and everyone's treated like family. The crew here is warm, friendly, and makes you feel right at home from the first "hello." I just hope EMS Kusina can find a permanent spot here in South San Francisco soon, because the city deserves this level of Filipino comfort food on the regular. Pro tip: Come hungry, leave happy!

It's just too busy. While it is unique and a fun try, it's not for me. The service we experienced on a Saturday for lunch was very poor. We got 3/4 of our entrees, and we continued to wait for the last one. I had to physically get up and catch someone from the counter, as they avoided my table since they thought they were done serving us. It was after waiting for 20 minutes, btw, and when I asked about our last entree, I was told "oh sorry we lost the ticket"... That really left a foul taste for me.... MEH. I don't feel inclined to come back personally, but I can see the novelty. It's cute inside and it's fusion-y and fun. I get it.

I appreciate that they hadn't run out of these items, as it was later in the day. Looking at the food trays in the display case when I arrived, they even had pork bbq skewers available, and this is around 5pm on a Sunday. That's rare for filipino eateries in or around the south bay. Service was standard and sufficient, and everything was packed and ready to go in just 10 minutes. The food items I got were a bit dry, particularly with a lack of sauce in the beefsteak dish, and the sisig was slightly mushy. But there was no shortage of flavor, and the portions were large enough to last for at least two separate meals. No dine-in seating at this spot. It was more like a convenience store inside, but a filipino one that serves hot food items in the back. I guess I know where I can get some decent filipino cuisine, canned goods, and lotto tickets all in one place.
