Rice pudding with vanilla, cinnamon, and rum-macerated prunes

Valeria -- undoubtedly the best restaurant in Boerne -- offers a dining experience that marries Italian-inspired cuisine with a farm-to-table ethos, sourcing many ingredients from its own farm and trusted local partners. Under the guidance of Chef Keith Kuhn, whose international culinary background informs the menu, Valeria delivers a seasonally evolving selection of dishes that emphasize freshness, quality, and flavor. Though the emphasis is on Italian, the menu veers into other cuisines from Europe. From wood-fired pizzas to fresh seafood and house-made desserts, Valeria has earned its reputation as a rare gem in a town bereft of world-class cuisine. Having dined there numerous times, I could write a tome of a review detailing at least a dozen dishes. Alas, Yelp has imposed a draconian 5,000-character limit, so I am forced to limit my review to several standouts. Valeria's housemade bread selections put other restaurants' bread offerings to shame. The selection varies from visit to visit, but expect a generous portion of organic, warm house-baked breads accompanied by unsalted French butter, a ramekin of sea salt, and a selection of briny olives. True to European tradition, I butter each slice of bread and apply a sprinkling of salt to taste. The spicy meat lovers pizza is a triumph of bold flavors. Topped with a robust combination of pepperoni, Italian sausage, fresh jalapeños, Calabrian chilis, a mountain of shredded mozzarella, and a zesty San Marzano tomato sauce, this pizza -- my personal favorite on the menu -- balances heat with depth. The crust, crafted from organic flour, achieves the coveted Neapolitan texture: crisp on the outside, airy within. A smear of San Marzano tomato sauce provides a bright, tangy foundation, while the jalapeños and Calabrian chilis deliver a satisfying kick. The duck confit, easily the best iteration of the dish within 100 miles, exemplifies Valeria's ability to execute rustic European standards with finesse. The Rohan duck leg confit arrives succulent and tender, the meat falling off the bone after hours of slow cooking in its own fat. Paired with duck fat-sautéed potatoes, the dish offers a rich, earthy decadence, complemented by a vibrant red cabbage, beet, and red onion slaw with a dollop of crème fraîche. The interplay of textures -- crisp skin, creamy potatoes, and crunchy slaw -- creates a symphony of contrasts, while the seasoning (a hint of rosemary and thyme) underscores the duck's natural richness. It's a sophisticated yet comforting plate, one that Chef Keith was happy to make for me by special request. Thank you, Chef! The fish and chips reflect Valeria's global influences and commitment to sustainable seafood. Featuring a flaky, wild-caught fish -- haddock, as I recall -- the filets are encased in a light, golden batter that crisps beautifully without becoming greasy. The fries, house-made and twice-cooked for that perfect desiccated crunch, accompany a house-made dill tartar sauce, adding a creamy, tangy counterpoint to the fish's mild sweetness. Sourced from responsibly caught stocks, per Valeria's standards, it's a refined take on a British classic, proving that even familiar comfort food can shine with premium ingredients and careful preparation. The linguine pescatore is a seafood lover's dream, brimming with fresh shellfish and a zesty, robust tomato sauce. The clams, mussels, and shrimp are cooked perfectly (never rubbery), while the linguine arrives al dente. It's a vibrant, rustic plate that had me sweating most gloriously. On one visit, the kitchen inexplicably forgot to include the mussels, an oversight Chef Keith remedied by presenting me with a huge complimentary side dish of the aforementioned bivalves. Serendipity-doo-dah! The warm chocolate sheet cake provides a decadent finale, one that I've savored on many occasions. Served straight from the oven, this cake features a moist, fudgy center with a slightly crisp edge, its deep chocolate flavor derived from high-quality cocoa. Chopped Texas pecans add an extra depth of flavor and texture. It's a comforting yet elegant end to the meal, embodying the restaurant's ethos of quality without pretense, a sweet reminder of why Valeria stands out in Boerne's largely fetid dining landscape. Don't let its unassuming strip mall veneer fool you; this hidden gem offers an intimate atmosphere, attentive service, and a wine list that pairs beautifully with its fare. For those seeking a memorable meal in Boerne, Valeria is the best option by far.

Great food! We had appetizers, Caesar salad and two seafood pastas. It was all terrific and we had enough pasta left for lunch a couple of days later

The pizza was the best we've had. Chef asked how we like our pizza. We like it crispy. It was perfection. Can't wait to try the other menu items

I did not even know about this place until the other day I stopped to get a taco a couple doors down for lunch and tonight I went there and had the best crab cake i have had since 2008 in Virginia! My son had the steak and frites and it was also perfectly cooked. Delicious and very nice place. To top it all off Keith the Chief is a United States Marine!!! Semper Fi Keith! This place is on the once a week menu from here on out.

After real estate meetings near Boerne, I didn't feel like driving home only to face the kitchen. So I did a quick Yelp search of nearby restaurants. Since Valeria was 5 minutes away with good reviews, I made my way over. The restaurant sits off Main St in a little strip center which I would have otherwise missed. On the way in, I met a couple outside on the side walk. We all stood there looking at the strip center options. Peruvian, Thai or Italian at Valeria. We chatted and they asked which one I was going to as they were torn between Valeria and the Thai restaurant. They chose Thai and we joked that we'd compare notes afterwards. As I entered, I was greeted by Laura, a very friendly and knowledgeable server. As the restaurant was empty, I had my choice of the elegant white linen tables. The music playing was a nice mix of Sinatra style jazz standards which helped set the mood. Although dining alone, I thought it would be a great spot for a date night. Laura kept the conversation flowing, so it wasn't awkward for me to be sitting by myself. I ordered the flounder. No wine as I still had driving and work to do. It came with a buttery rice and grilled veggies. It was really delicious. It tasted homemade like something you'd make at home if you were trying a fancy recipe. I ate every bit of it. The only downsides? Prices are for fine dining. My entree was $32 for flounder, rice and veggies. Perhaps priced to offset slow traffic? And the walk to restroom went thru prep area, past office and many boxes/supplies stored in the hallway. However the restroom and entire restaurant was spic and span clean. Afterwards I headed to the little ice cream shop next door for dessert. Another winner! This spot is a hidden gem! I made the right choice!

It has that old time, family appeal kind of restaurant. I don't know how else to explain this other than it's food that your southern grandma would make for you. It had all the flavor and all the heart cooked right into it. It's self serve drinks and silverware, etc. I love that they have different size portions of meals. There are so many things to choose from. I normally take a million photos. I apologize because I was so into my visit that I didn't get any except photos of my family. I can tell you we started with fried mushrooms and they were incredible. They were hot and battered perfectly. Add Ranch and I was in heaven. They served it with gravy also-which is a must. Do you ever look back at your visit and wish you had eaten more of something? That's me with the mushrooms, but I was trying to be lady like so I only ate a few. I got chopped beef sirloin that was smothered in onions and brown gravy & fried okra and they serve it with this muffin like roll. It was all so good. The quality of the meat was great and that deep brown gravy compliments the entire dish....grilled onions....oh man...take me back! Let me just tell you my little southern heart was in heaven. Their onion rings are amazing also. The chicken fried steak was great. I mean....i had to take bites of my son's plate also. I don't see how you could go wrong here. I love that you go grab your food and go sit yourself down. This place stayed hopping but they were on their game and had the food out so tables were turning quickly. I didn't see anybody ever waiting to sit. This is just an all in all great place to eat. I wish it wasn't so far away from me, but I will definitely make an effort to be back.

We got drinks and my unsweet tea was nicely brewed, which in Texas is expected. Counter staff was friendly and service was quick. The environs are in serious need of an upgrade, which I doubt will happen to keep the prices low. As it is our shared meal and two drinks was about $25. We were very pleased with our meal, the restrooms were clean and easy access, and overall other than extremely dated decor this eatery is a Boerne classic!

Our friendly young male server suggested a new Portuguese beer that just came out. It comes in a 4-pack, 6.8 oz bottles with convenient pull-tabs & on a bucket of ice. We went for it! Not bitter, light bodied & easy to drink. We savored the ambiance in the outdoor patio as it FINALLY cooled down to the low 70s! We were given water in a carafe and 2 glasses. I'm sensitive to the taste of municipal tap water so I should've asked if it was filtered water? You'll have to ask for ice cubes if you want ice. Our tapas were the scallops ceviche tostadas(2 tortillas holding them) & a flatbread with Serrano jamon, sliced pears, melted brie, onions & drizzled balsamic glaze. Hubs liked it but I thought it was lukewarm & skimpy on the ham. The cheese wasn't gooey & cooled off. Was slightly gamey to me. He loved his scallop ceviche tostada. The restaurant wasn't very occupied but our server said it gets pretty packed in the evening esp. when there's live music. More people came in when we were almost finished eating. We ate outside because they must have just disinfected & mopped the floors because the inside had a super strong chemical smell. Lots of metal tables and chairs in the patio.

Because the idea of music being an actual integral part of the dining experience--not just some kind of background noise--felt a little precious for my taste. I'm glad to admit I was wrong. So let's start with the ambiance and the vibe of Yozora. It's in a fairly non-descript kind of center; not bad but not specially memorable. But the space itself is open and has an air of restrained sophistication. And then there's that hi-fi set up. The music at Yozora really is part of the experience, but it's not intrusive in the way that you'd think. Most of what my dining companion and I heard was 50s and 60s jazz, and it was perfect for the occasion. Sushi and Coltrane are a great mix, and even though we were not far from the hi-fi system, I could hear every word of our conversation, without the need for either of us to raise a voice. Somehow, it's like the music operates on a different frequency from regular table chatter. Suffice to say, the music enhanced the mood and really set a scene for Yozora's chefs to tell some stories. And that, they do really well. We started out with seasonal tempura and miso masu ceviche--ocean trout marinated in miso, soy, and lime juice--that was sublime. But funnily enough, the real star small plate was a truffle creamy miso soup that was earthy and slightly sweet at the same time and was silky in texture. From there, we ordered a series of crudo and battera, each unique in its own way. It was wonderful stuff, accompanied by a rice lager. The kitchen at Yozora is not shy about experimenting with non-traditional flavors and ingredients. Sometimes it works really well; sometimes, not as well, but it's never bad, and the servers actually ask for feedback for the kitchen, which is something I rarely see. Yozora honestly seems to be most concerned with creating a great dining experience, and it does that, from the chefs to the line cooks to the servers (who are helpful and attentive without hovering). The music, the mood, and the menu add up to a memorable experience.

I made a reservation well in advance for a party of 15, hoping to enjoy a special evening with family and friends. Unfortunately, from the moment we were seated, everything went downhill. Service was incredibly slow. It took nearly 20 minutes just to receive our first round of drinks, and over an hour for our food to arrive. Throughout the evening, our server was dismissive and repeatedly responded with comments like, "Well, you got to wait," often accompanied by unpleasant facial expressions. When the food finally arrived, the hot dishes were cold, the flavors were disappointing, and the seafood tasted far from fresh--it seemed like it had been thawed and served immediately. Every single person in our group commented on how underwhelming the food was. We continued ordering drinks throughout the night, but each round took another 20-30 minutes to arrive. On several occasions, our orders were forgotten entirely, and we had to ask the manager to get them. To make matters worse, the bill was inaccurate. We were charged for drinks that no one ordered, including some that never even made it to our table. The check also included both an automatic gratuity and an additional tip, which had to be corrected. The final disappointment involved my birthday cake. I brought my own cake, and the staff stored it in their refrigerator when we arrived. When it was time to bring it out, I had to ask three separate times, and it still took about 20 minutes. By then, several of my guests had already left, so they never got to celebrate or enjoy the cake. It completely took away from what should have been a memorable birthday moment. Overall, this was one of the most disappointing dining experiences I've had. Between the extremely slow service, poor attitude, inaccurate bill, and disappointing food, this restaurant is simply not worth the time or money. I cannot recommend it.
