Val is awesome awesome awesome. My husband (then fiance) told me it was my job as an elite yelper to find a dance instructor. I did a random yelp search and found a few dance instructors. Based on the reviews, I liked Val because she has her own dance studio and you have a private lesson in a private space. We brought a few songs along on our iPhones and Val carefully listened to each and told us what she thought was a good song to dance to. We chose Yellow. She had her in-house music editor edit the song to about 3 minutes long. We bought Val's 5 class package and dutifully went to her studio every Wednesday evening. Val taught us how to dance, how to do a dip, how to move and listen to the music. Not only is Val a great teacher, I felt that she was almost like a life coach at times too (how to walk assertively and be confident). We had our wedding in Thailand a week to this day. We had a beautiful beach wedding, cocktails, thai dancers and drummers leading a procession to the ballroom and finally we made our entrance as a married couple. The DJ hit out song and out we went. I don't know how we looked (as I haven't seen the video yet), but people told us that we looked amazing and were impressed. We owe our credit to Val. She made us look beautiful and amazing for our wedding and I thank her for that. We knew we needed help if we were not going to embarrass ourselves during our first dance on the wedding day. When we began I had decent rhythm and a few long ago tango and ballroom dance lessons under my belt, but frankly, I was chaotic and a bit gawky, and mostly useless on the dance floor without a very strong lead. My fiancée, a true introvert, had almost zero partners dance experience (but for a 1/2 dozen stilted, failed ballroom lessons 3 years prior where they taught little more than how to count steps). He had difficulty moving on beat, and was completely uncomfortable with dance and performing. Val taught my fiancée more about how to lead confidently and move gracefully into the music in the first 2 hours of lessons than he'd been able to pick up his entire life. She transformed my gawky lines and posture into refined elegant shape, and had me properly following my fiancée's lead before I even knew what had happened. We suddenly looked like we knew what we were doing - and we were actually having a fantastic time doing it. We started spontaneously breaking into dance at home or at a party. A couple of things to note. 1. I'm a guy with two left feet. 2. I'm a guy... with two left feet. So let's just say that having dance lessons was a pretty good idea for our wedding. And to put it briefly, Val kicked us off, and Zoe took it the rest of the way. We had an absolutely amazing dance. It started off with a nice and slow 4-step to the Glee version of Jason Mraz's "Lucky" and then went into a full-fledged choreographed funky hip-hop dance of the Glee version of Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream." Did I mention I have two left feet? Zoe and Val were absolutely incredible. Although I was a little hesitant at first in having a fully choreographed dance because of how they can look a little staged, Val taught us how to smoothly pull off a 4-step slow dance and Zoe pulled off a stunning choreographed hip hop routine that flowed naturally like we had been dancing all of our lives! It was fun, it was playful, and our entire wedding guests got an absolute KICK out of it. We bought the 5 dance package and it was worth it. We even did an extra session with Zoe at the very end just to clean it all up. Now it's not like you can do just the dance lessons and have a fully smooth wedding dance. You need to practice at home as well. But with their simple techniques and their patiences and tips, with just a little bit of practice, especially after dance lesson #3, you will be absolutely rolling and the last two lessons are great for touch ups, flair, and flow. This is so long overdue! We took classes from Eldon, who was such a great instructor. As a background, my husband and I are not dancers at all, and my guy had some typical 'dude' reservations about formal ballroom dancing, but we both ultimately ended up really enjoying the process and were well prepared for our wedding! Eldon completely put us at ease and helped us build confidence. We were also really pleased that we were able to get some basic steps in 4 sessions, but we weren't really looking for any complex choreography. In contrast, I took a dance class with my father back East and understood that the instruction given there was totally different. That experience made me appreciate Eldon's ability to really simplify the steps and also make it fun for us!. I can't dance, and honestly I really don't like to dance. But for my wedding, I knew I didn't want to go out in front of all my family and friends and make a fool of myself (and more importantly my wife). So my wife and I decided to sign up for dance lessons. Val was simply amazing. She is not only brilliant at learning what each person can do, but she has an uncanny ability to understand a couple and how they work together. My wife and I showed up early a few times and got to see how good Val is at tailoring her teaching methods to different couples. She brought us along slowly, learning one step at a time, and in the end choreographed a dance for us that went off better than we could have ever hoped for (a guest even referred to me as Mattric Swayze). My wife and I originally signed up for five lessons and in the end signed up for a sixth simply because we enjoyed working with her so much. Hands down one of the BESTTTT experiences my wife and I had in San Francisco ... dare I say magical. A bit of backstory: I purchased a five-pack of lessons as a Christmas gift for my wife but in the New Year, of course, we decide to move to Seattle. In the hustle and bustle of packing and moving, it's the final week before we leave SF and we decide to shotgun our five lessons back-to-back. One a day for five days ... and you know what? It was the best decision we could've made. Yelpers I cannot tell you how Val completely saved us that week. Her calm but energizing vibe immediately set us at ease. We popped the Pitbull station on Spotify and started learning the basics. One day we even did a bit of partner breathing exercises / Reiki at the top of a lesson and Val's hand was scorching hot like Mr. Miyagi -- for reals. With a 1 year old and the mania of moving, Val helped my wife and I stay grounded, connected and most importantly how to kill it on the dance floor. We had a great time with Eldon. He's patient and easy to understand and kept things fun and simple. We were so glad we took lessons - it make our first dance so much easier, less awkward and fun! Val is amazing!! She was the only dance instructor we had talked to who was super supportive of our "we want to get our bridal party involved in our first dance" from the very very beginning! She is a creative instructor who really knows her stuff as well as being great at assessing her clients' abilities, building on the progress one by one through the lessons. In the end, we had an amazing compilation of dances which started with a romantic tribute to Michael Jackson's "I'll Be There", followed by a sweet dance to the soundtrack of Up with whimsical moves, to finally a dance off between me and my husband, joined later by the bridal parties on both sides, to Timbaland's "The Way I Are". Coordinating these moves was no easy task given the quick yet smooth transitions and making sure that my husband and I can execute the coordinated moves was even tougher. Val is an outstanding dance instructor. I have been lucky enough to have her as a teacher for both group and private lessons over the past two years. The group setting was an ongoing class at a local health club. It always amazed me that Val was so aware of each and every participant, and what areas he or she needed assistance with. We decided last minute to get dance lessons for our first dance, we wanted something fun fun fun, not the traditional lovey slow dance. I'm so happy we went with Val, we got about 7 lessons in and she picks up the beats, tempo of the song and can create a choreographed dance routine, just like that. It's pretty amazing; she knew the song better than us. The best thing though is that she not only teaches you steps, she teaches you to have fun and to really own the steps and not look awkward on the dance floor. She gave really good tips about hand positioning, even reminders of keeping your head up or to simply just smile and really enjoy the dance. Trust me, it really makes a difference! I've seen way too many awkward first dances where the couple is just too nervous or too focused on the steps rather than really taking in that it's their first dance! Literally, as good as it gets. I've known Val for years, but never had the chance (excuse?) to do a dance class with her til my wedding prep was under way. In 10 lessons, Val took my fiance and I from zero to hero. I have a dance background and my now husband is a drummer, so we had an idea of rhythm - but none of that prepared us for the incredible routine that Val had cooked up. My wife is a natural leader, but Val wanted me to lead. I naturally do whatever so there was a learning curve for both of us. Within 8 classes we had a beautiful first dance. Val has a knack for teaching dance moves that are within the ability of each student, but still making it all flow together. She took suggestions on what we wanted to do and built our dance around all of that. It took us about 4 or 5 classes for it to all fully click. My partner and I worked with Val before our wedding. Neither of us had danced before we went to Val. We would literally wiggle around the dance floor looking like deranged teenagers. We wanted to learn Salsa dancing for our wedding celebration. My fiancé and I were lucky enough to receive lessons for our first dance from Val and I consider that time as the most important experience I had in preparing us for the big day and beginning of our life as a married couple. Her approach will make any kind of person comfortable and will give you the confidence you need to dance your heart out. My wife and I decided to take dance lessons for our wedding since we thought it would be a good idea before having to publicly dance in front of all our friends and family. It turned out to be one of the best decisions we made throughout wedding planning. We were beginner dancers when it came to dancing together as a couple and choreographing a dance. Val was great teaching us the basics but clearly has a lot of dancing talent herself so I think she would be great even for a more advanced couple. Val is an intuitive and insightful person - as soon as she met us she started to understand each of us and also how we work as a couple. She then uses that information to help us learn to dance together and also to show us a new and fun way to communicate through movement and dance. It sounds cheesy but it isn't at all. Going through the dance lessons meant a new physical connection that we shared, a scheduled hour of fun for each lesson and hours of practice on our own time that almost always lifted our spirits. People really should dance more often - it's hard to be grumpy or sad or stressed out when you're dancing. No matter what it was so much fun and I credit a ton of the fun to Val's approach and style. Val was absolutely amazing and this is one of the best things we've done for our wedding. My husband was very reluctant to take any dance lesson and was worried having to memorize dance routines and look awkward. I booked 2 lessons with Val and forced him to go. He ended up having the most fun, agreed it was well worth the time, and wished we took more lessons! Val would observe us dance and customize what she teaches based on our ability and the # of lessons we have. Since we only had 2 lessons, she taught us a few basic moves on the first, and helped us improve and change up some moves on the 2nd. We were amazed by the results with just 2 lessons and can't imagine what our dance would be like with more. I highly recommend Val to any couple preparing for their first dance.
