Organ inside the classroom

I'm on the hunt for a new workout routine so I've been trying different workouts and studios around the city using Classpass. I've taken a reformer pilates class once before and wasn't a fan but that was years ago so I figured why not give it another go. This studio is conveniently located to me and they had plenty of class times. I came in early to get a refresher on the reformer machine. The instructor introduced herself and was friendly and welcoming. She taught a great class that was very challenging and worked out the whole body. I'm sore today but in a good way! As many other reviews have mentioned, the studio itself is converted from an old church - super cool! Loved that they kept the original organ and stained windows. The high ceilings make it feel airy and open even though it is an intimate setting with only 12 reformers. They had AC blasting and I appreciated the airflow because, despite the slow movements and low-impact workout design, I worked up a good sweat! There are plenty of lockers to store your belongings, a restroom, and 2 changing rooms for your convenience. If you're new, I recommend coming in early to get a rundown of the machine and also secure a good spot. Get one closest to the mirror (the front of the class) so that when you do moves facing the back, there are people to follow along. You can wear grippy socks or go barefoot.

The class wasn't as "inviting" as I'd hoped it would be, but I enjoyed the workout. This is my second time doing Pilates with Core40. The first time was about 3 years ago at the now closed Hayes Valley location. I took a Foundation class there (posted picture of my old review) and I enjoyed it and have wanted to get back into it every since. This time, I jumped right into it and just picked a class that fit with the time I wanted to work out. I invited two friends to join me and when we arrived we were greeted by the hostess at the top of the stairs. She was the sweetest and got us signed in right away. We found our machines, put our things away in the lockers and got ready for the class. Jackie was our instructor and she seemed a bit irritated that we were new. She sped through her introduction of the machine and how to work it and even apologized to the class, despite us arriving the 10 minutes early they requested for new people. Despite all of that, the class was amazing and I left feeling muscles I didn't know I had upon entering. She walked around and helped us adjust to ensure our form was correct, gave very clear instructions, and even gave in-the-moment demonstrations on the stage. I didn't like that she didn't check on us at the end of the class to see if we enjoyed it or would return or anything. I think she may have just been having a bad day, but it was not a good first impression and reintroduction into the company or workout. First class with Core40 is like 99 cent so there is no reason you shouldn't give it a try. They had grippy socks at the check in for sale for $7 (amazing price) if you need them. Thankfully Core40 gives you the opinion to use them or not. The fitness center is located in a former Church (it still has the organ piano is on the stage and the frosted glass windows) so if you have to curse to get through your workouts, you may want to pass. Lol. I'm very excited about getting into Pilates and want to try it weekly. The hostess recommended we try Paige's class (I think that's her name), but we don't live close to chance another unwelcoming experience. I'm going to try a different company before returning. Nevertheless, it was a great workout.

So excited that the 4th Core40 SF studio has opened up. This one is housed in a former church, and I love how they've kept a lot of the old church decor. The layout of the megaformers are well spaced and are just side by side in two rows here. Same great workout that we all know and love as the other studios. Parking can be hit or miss in the area. Welcome to Noe/Mission Core40! I'm keeping my fingers crossed for hopefully a future location in the Sunset area or Peninsula. Viva la lagree!

The facility is great -- an old church, as others have noted -- and the instructors are really good.

Wow Pretty excited…read more Started here in Mid December and wanted to get some solid experience before my review Equipment 5/5 Bathroom 5/5 (clean, huge and you can change if needed) Location 5/5 Cleaning 4/5 while group folks clean at end of class and privates the instructors do but it seems like a lot of hair/etc collects under machines Parking is plentiful except on street cleaning day and better between 8-1pm I started my journey as a green horn in Pilates as in never tried 1 movement before walking through these doors. Pilates was suggested from my rheumatologist and my physical therapist. Started with some entry level group classes and found i loved them but also knew I need more 1 on 1 to ensure I was doing everything correctly for my EDS issues. Met Ramlah and now work with her 2-3 days per week when I am in the city. Only disappointing thing about this particular facility is they don't have a lot of formation classes, which are the ones you take in the beginning. Fortunately, I'm in a place where I am able to pay for privates, but I don't know if this is the place to come and learn in a group environment as they have so few classes. I found a couple of studios in my area that do offer them and will continue with privates but take some groups elsewhere that offer entry level classes the focus on form. ]

Love this place!…read more It's hard and intense but you definitely get an amazing workout. It's a low impact pilates class with slow movements on a reformer megaformer machine. Here's a small tidbit from their site on what lagree is: The Lagree method blends Pilates, cardio and strength training. Our classes are performed using the patented M3S Megaformer machines that target the slow twitch muscle fibers by engaging in controlled movements, which in turn activate your metabolism, burn fat and calories. I love lagree. I'm always super sore after but it's such an amazing workout. Bring grip socks cause you'll def need it! I've taken a class from several instructors and every single one was great. Parking isn't too bad, there's a lot across the street and a parking lot close by.

So I wanted to wait to take a lot more classes before leaving a review for here. I've been to so many Pilates and Lagree studios and the many of them have resulted in random injuries of my friends, etc. But I've always had a really great experience here. The studio is easy to find thirst street parking around or technically there is a parking lot for a grocery store next-door ahem (not saying people park there). The studio is very clean and cute . And instructors are really kind and helpful. Definitely plan to come here more often! I would definitely have a membership here if I live closer !

One of the most unfortunate symptoms of this surgery was that I gained about 30 lbs in water weight from all of the cardiac medications/diuretics etc. which was so uncomfortable. From taking private lessons with him once a week, to taking his regular reform classes 1-2x weekly, to now taking his advanced classes 4-5/week, Derrick has been the driving force behind my continuing with reformer Pilates classes at the mighty Pilates studio. I will try and post a few pictures of my progression later when I'm back at my desktop! Hope this helps!

A few of the really good instructors left. Second they randomly started changing the classes. A few weeks ago I signed up for a reformer class that mysteriously got changed to a "power" class (much harder, maybe better for me but definitely not what I signed up for). This was the third or fourth time classes had been shifted without notifying the participants. The instructor said she just found out as well. Why? No idea. Also frustrating is that despite the fact I have come here for years there has never been any kind of thank you for your loyalty, hey it's your birthday here's a free class, here's a discount, nothing. It was a small studio that has now become a chain, so the vibe has shifted for sure. I wish them the best and thank them for all of the great classes I've had in the past but it's time to move on.

My only wish was that I had found this studio earlier when I lived just a block or two away, I would have been here all the time. I took Jen's class -- she's the owner -- and it's nice to find someone who is so nice, passionate and involved in her business. The space is small but has 5-6 reformers, some other equipment and one bathroom. Note that there's no separate changing area other than the one bathroom so if you're going to cut it close to the class, it may be best to change at home. The reformer class was excellent and was focus and controlled and I got a good workout in. Jen took the time to explain everything and made sure we were doing the moves correctly. Even though I didn't really sweat in the class, I did feel a little sore in my abs the next day and still got a god workout in. Would highly recommend this place if you like pilates classes like Body Chemistry in the Mission or Mercury Fitness in the Marina. These are the kinds of pilates studios I love to find and frequent. I don't really love the BodyRok or Core40 classes as much since they go too fast, seem very repetitive in the movements/exercises, and don't focus on form. These kind of classes are more of the opposite. 5 stars. Looking forward to taking another class here next time I'm back in San Francisco.
