Started here in Mid December and wanted to get some solid experience before my review Equipment 5/5 Bathroom 5/5 (clean, huge and you can change if needed) Location 5/5 Cleaning 4/5 while group folks clean at end of class and privates the instructors do but it seems like a lot of hair/etc collects under machines Parking is plentiful except on street cleaning day and better between 8-1pm I started my journey as a green horn in Pilates as in never tried 1 movement before walking through these doors. Pilates was suggested from my rheumatologist and my physical therapist. Started with some entry level group classes and found i loved them but also knew I need more 1 on 1 to ensure I was doing everything correctly for my EDS issues. Met Ramlah and now work with her 2-3 days per week when I am in the city. Only disappointing thing about this particular facility is they don't have a lot of formation classes, which are the ones you take in the beginning. Fortunately, I'm in a place where I am able to pay for privates, but I don't know if this is the place to come and learn in a group environment as they have so few classes. I found a couple of studios in my area that do offer them and will continue with privates but take some groups elsewhere that offer entry level classes the focus on form. ] read more

The bright, airy space is filled with the best equipment from reformers and Cadillacs to the chair and spring boards. They have every accessory on the planet. I highly recommend this place. I would have given 4 stars because the app they use to book classes is not always efficient. There is no phone here so you have to email if/when there is a problem. They respond quickly and are very happy to resolve any problems. I could not give anything but 5 because they excel at what they are here to do. Artemis, the owner is a wonderful person and her classes fill up. I only take the reformer classes. I have only been going here about 4 months and haven't taken classes from all the instructors yet. I have been a student at Bright Star Pilates for more than a year, with several of the instructors in many different classes- all of them great! I have clearly gotten stronger since I started classes here, and yet have not injured myself- seems like a miracle but maybe it's the wonderful instruction?? I tend to take the reformer classes, but they have lots more equipment and class types available too. It's really nice inside, everything is very clean and good space to move around. The customer support is just as professional and wonderful as the classes, they have been extra accommodating when I reach out with a 'Oops, I made a mistake on my schedule/group purchase/ whatever' emails, and they always respond quickly, so nice! The location is super convenient with parking and public transit all around, and a delicious cafe across the street (especially nice on the weekend mornings!) I currently recommend them to all my friends, and now I recommend them to you. read more

I absolutely adore this reformer Pilates studio. It's an amalgamation of great interior design with ultimate taste and some of the best instructors in the city. Artemis runs the studio here. She is hands on, teaches many of the classes, and a super graceful and patient instructor. Even in group lessons, she will give verbal cues or comes to each person for alignment adjustment that will make the entire difference from an easy exercise while going through the motion to a challenging core exercise with the right muscle engagement. She sets the tone here and truly cares about her clientele individually. I also love Abigail's classes on Friday. The cardio core class on Saturday is super unique - it's done with a jumping board attached to the reformer machine, where people can get cardio exercise without the pounding of the knees while strengthen the core and the leg muscles around the knees. It's fantastic for someone like me with 2 ACL injuries in the past. This studio is sun filled, beautifully laid out, with a gorgeous flower arrangement in the front awaiting us when we arrive. Everything is super tastefully done with a curated and discriminating eye. It's an oasis to which people can escape, workout, and re-align after hours of misalignment at our desk jobs. read more

After having a baby, I was carrying extra weight, struggling with shoulder and back pain, and felt generally clumsy from lack of exercise. Artemis is incredibly patient and encourage. She understood my needs at every stage of recovery. We first focused on proper posture and joint alignment, which helped boost my confidence and developed awareness of the mind-body connection. With that foundation in place, I was able to build strength from a variety of Pilates group workouts. Bright Star is a great studio for all levels of pilates - from beginner to experienced. There are a lot of group reformer classes on the schedule throughout the week, and the studio has a lot of reformers, so it isn't impossible to get a space in a class. Great trainers all around. read more

I have been going to Body Chemistry ever since an injury took me away from my usual dancing and running activities. I love their reformer classes. They aren't necessarily cheap, but they are quality!! The reason I wanted to write a review right now, though, is to give them a big shout out for their great online classes during these crazy COVID times. They were extremely quick to adapt to an online presence, and they haven't looked back. They offer a variety of great classes to fit one's multiple moods, and their instructors are top notch! I have enjoyed it so much that, even though I do look forward greatly to returning to the physical classroom, I hope they continue to offer some of the online classes even after the worst of COVID has passed! read more

After my cherished studio closed, I searched for a new home, and I found it at Bright Star. After Covid-19 shutdowns, I needed to be retrained, and Artemis was the perfect instructor for me. After 11 years of Pilates, I did not think I had much more learning to do, but I did. Artemis substantially improved my practice and movement. She understands the body and has excellent advice for everyone no matter the body or level of experience. She is an incredibly talented instructor and her classes are well-planned and challenging. The entire studio is lovely and clean, and the equipment is well-maintained. Artemis is a treasure, but the other instructors at her studio are also excellent. I have been taking classes at BrightStar (previously Body Chemistry) for almost 3 years. I moved to Southern Oregon from the Bay Area and was thrilled that they were committed to their students throughout the pandemic by offering on-line classes. While everyone is back in-person, Artemis continues to teach a gyrokinesis class on-line, allowing me to continue taking it remotely. I tried pilates at two other studios and decided it just wasn't for me: I couldn't really make sense of the instructions, and I wasn't getting a lot out of the private instruction. Then a friend urged me to try Bright Star Pilates, and it has completely changed my fitness. I have taken private instruction with most of the instructors, and they are all excellent -- good at explaining posture and moves, good at demonstrating, attentive, fun. I've been attending classes at Body Chemistry studio for several years. I absolutely love this place, the vibe, the instructors, and the studio culture. All the instructors are amazing, and always provide a challenging workout, without compromising safety or form. Artemis, is the owner and also teaches numerous classes. She is always actively seeking feedback and input from clients which makes me feel like a partner rather than a customer. Shelter in place has required all of us to change how we did things previously, to a new norm. Body Chemistry studio was quick to develop an online series of classes. The classes are fun, challenging, and offered at various times throughout the week. I'd rather see everyone at the studio, BUT this is a great alternative until SIP orders are lifted. They recently added a few new classes (outdoors in the park and props) which I look forward to joining. If you are looking to stretch, strengthen, lengthen, and work off the stress of SIP, I recommend that you check out the online classes. They are totally reasonable and a great workout. Even through Zoom, the instructors are attentive and provide feedback, great cues, and options. PS: Once the studio reopens, I suggest you also checkout some of the reformer classes but until then, online mat classes are the way to go!! read more

My experience here spans a number of years now. I first came to Artemis for Pilates privates to help rehabilitate an old injury. I've been a loyal student at Body Chemistry for over 3 years now, and that's saying a LOT - they have truly earned status as one of my favorite places to come on a weekly basis! The highly qualified teachers always bring their A-Game in that they really know their stuff and are trained in the classical and contemporary pilates methods, they come up with unique classes every time (no templated classes and annoying high volume music here thank goodness!), and truly care about your progress and your goals in doing pilates. I also really appreciate the other students who come here on the regular and it really feels like a welcome place in the midst of the every more hustling and bustling city. If you like slower, more traditional pilates, you would probably like this place. I usually do pilates at places like Mint Studios, which is my favorite in the city, but this place is conveniently located for me. You can take the 14 down Mission, get off at 16th St BART, or go to Van Ness and walk about 10-15 min. They also have a decent number of classes at good hours, but I wish that they had a few more advanced pilates classes. The mixed level classes are fine, but don't seem that challenging and I don't really break a sweat in the classes. But they are great for a lighter workout day or if I need a break from more intense classes and want to focus more on form, stretching and alignment. Some of the teachers are a bit hit or miss -- they all have different styles of teaching, but they all know about form and are checking on people's alignment and making adjustments, which is nice. My favorite instructor that I've found so far is Heather. The studio has maybe 10 reformer machines for group classes and they also have a section in the back for private classes. There are cubbies for your things in the back but no locks, but the classes are pretty small and it's only one class at a time. The place smells a little bit stuffy sometimes -- I guess there's not a lot of ventilation. They are a stickler for the classes starting on time and lock the door when the classes begin, so allow a little extra time to get here so that you're not standing locked outside or you're not frantically rushing to get here. This is not a "saunter in late and it's okay" kind of class. Overall, a slower-paced class, but still a good overall-body workout. I like that the exercises are thoughtful and varied (unlike Core40 and BodyRok which seem like the same routine all the time). Just don't expect a sweaty, fast-paced workout when you come here. read more

I just finished the new client 2 weeks unlimited special. I really enjoyed the classes and everyone who works here is super nice. Pros: I went 4 - 5x a week for 2 weeks and was surprised at how sore I was after my workouts. Clean, cool studio. You can even stretch out in the back after a workout. Or come in early to use the reformer before your workout (assuming there isn't a class). Cons: You don't really know what body part the instructor will focus on & quite often it ends up being the same areas. Classes fill up fast. I booked 8-9 days out to get the times I wanted. Most of the instructors are hard to follow. I found 2 guy instructors to be the easiest to follow and had clear instructions about form. Don't expect advanced moves, you'll have to take private lessons. I took private lessons at equinox and discovered that I was doing more advanced workouts after trying these classes. read more

The sessions are led by amazing instructors that offer customized corrections and the studio offers a number of different reformer classes to choose from. I've been doing Pilates for 20 years and have spent that time at the best studios across NYC and LA. Bright Star Pilates is the single best Pilates studio I've been to. Artemis and all the teachers here are seriously invested in instructing students on proper technique, making these classes infinitely more valuable than the chain Pilates studios that just want to break you a sweat and get you out the door. More than just a workout, these classes are transformational for your body, making you stronger, better aligned, better centered, feeling taller, and the most comfortable you can feel in your body. As a massage junky, I've noticed I've felt the need for far fewer massages as the stretching, strengthening and aligning of these Pilates classes has made my body so much better balanced. The classes themselves are always interesting. The instructors use inventive choreography to challenge your body and your mind while always meeting students where they're at. Artemis and everyone at Bright Star are also really caring people who create a warm, welcoming, homey atmosphere. I just can't say enough about Bright Star. This is a truly exceptional Pilates studio. I've taken classes all over San Francisco and in several others cities- this place is special. Artemis and her amazing staff are all INCREDIBLY knowledgeable and experienced as well as personable . Body Chemistry has been my secret oasis in the Mission in the past few months. The studio is beautiful, clean, airy (thx to the high ceiling), bright (natural lights), and perfectly located near MUNI J lines. Artemis is my favorite Pilates instructor ever and yes, I've taken a lot of pilates classes in SF and NYC. She is knowledgable, friendly, and nonjudgmental. Modifications are always given if you let her know your preexisting conditions / injuries. We have taken both cardio pilates (with the jump board) and mixed level ("power" pilates). The later seems to be a more popular type so book early. They're also currently having a 20% discount for the holiday season. Overall, there's nothing to complain about... The best!!! I never took a reformer Pilates class before and started with the foundation class with Abigail. The class was so good that I'm hooked!! I drove up from San Jose again 3 days later to take another reformer class here with Susan. I have an injury and the staff showed a lot of concern and gave me option to both modify and increase the challenge if I wanted. I got a lot of good feedback on my form too. Not only does it have the state of the art instructors who teach classic Pilates, it also has loyal customers! You'll leave feeling energized, organized, leaner and stronger. Continue to be very impressed with the studio. I oftentimes get there early just to use all of the props, stretch out, etc. I am taking privates as well with Artemis, and she is a credit to her profession, not only her in knowledge of the body, but in the way she generously and meticulously runs her business. Re: my low back/hip issues - She has gone above and beyond and consults with outside professionals, sends me links and videos on how to manage my pelvis etc. when I am not able to be in the studio. What I'm working on in my body can be extremely frustrating, but I feel like I have someone on the journey with me to get to the core of the issue. Did I not mention in my first review how much I love going to the studio? It is soothing and calming, and a great upstairs space where they do the BEMER, but sometimes I go up there to stretch out. read more

Did really have a welcoming experience here it was a bummer I was taking my mother to run a few errands she had seen the Pilates studio so we parked and walked in just to get information on classes and to see the studio we walked in there was a lady and a gentleman working out we kindly asked if there was a front desk where we can get information on classes the lady nicely told us there was a second entrance where we would be able to speak to someone so we did so we spoke with a desk person so kindly informed us they didn't have a physical flyer with information for classes we learned that we would have to go online create a profile and sign up there and as we talked with the desk person a i take it a instructor she wasn't doing anything when we first walked in she began to scream like a Karen and gave out a loud shhhhh which I found completely disrespectful and racist I take it she heard my mothers accent but clearly she could of said "excuse me can you please lower your tone there are a few classes I'm session" but I take it professionalism isn't important there after we left I just suggest to my mother not to even bother with that Studio we didn't even get a apology for that disrespect I don't know if that woman has trouble with her kids and needs to yell but that's not a professional way to talk to someone I hope they do something to better welcome people who are interested or just lock the doors since both entrances were open read more
