My husband and I had such a great experience with Genesis Dance Studio and are incredibly grateful for all their help leading up to our wedding. A very special thank you to Arto, who was wonderful to work with. He taught us so much, was patient with us, and most importantly gave us the confidence we needed to get out there and dance on our wedding day. Without his help, I'm pretty sure things could have gone very differently! We felt supported throughout the whole process, and Arto made everything feel much less intimidating and much more natural. Thank you, Arto and Genesis Dance Studio, for all the time, patience, and encouragement. We truly appreciated it and would absolutely recommend them to anyone preparing for a wedding or wanting to feel more confident on the dance floor! read more

I had an amazing experience at Genesis Dance Studio! I was looking for a beginner-friendly adult dance class, and this was exactly what I needed. The instructors were patient, encouraging, and made everyone feel welcome from the moment class started. The atmosphere was fun, supportive, and completely judgment-free, which made it easy to relax and enjoy learning. The class was well-structured, easy to follow, and a great workout too. I left feeling more confident and excited to keep coming back. If you're an adult who's been wanting to try dancing but feels nervous about starting, I highly recommend Genesis Dance Studio. It's a fantastic place to learn, have fun, and build confidence! read more

I took my kid to a trial class here yesterday. It was supposed to be a one hour long intermediate class, but by the half hour mark, the new kids had mostly stood stationary, staring at the few kids who had been taking ballroom for a while as they went over old choreography. The man teaching them, the owner apparently, was shaming the kids for not knowing the choreography well enough. And I don't mean appropriately letting them know that they needed to practice more or try harder. The guy was mean spirited and just tore those kids down. My kid started crying at that point and asked if he could go to me. I thought he was freaked out by the owner (it turns out he was just miserable from standing there for half an hour and not being taught), and I spoke to the other teacher who proceeded to tell me that "if you don't like it, you teach the class", that the male teacher was the owner, that he hadn't interacted directly with my kid, and I knew where the door was. We left. While waiting for our transportation, another child came out with red eyes who had clearly been crying. I asked the dad if his daughter was new too, and he said she'd been going there for a while but wasn't used to the teaching style yet. If that's the teaching style, that's not something anyone should have to get used to. Dance is supposed to be fun. If you have seven kids in a one hour class and two of them leave after half an hour in tears... I shouldn't have to say this, but you're doing something wrong. For what it's worth, the studio manager was very nice and apologized, saying that the female dance teacher shouldn't have spoken to me the way that she did. But if the owner and the female teacher are calling the shots, while an appreciated sentiment, the manager's apology doesn't really help or change anything. This was a truly awful experience, and I would advise other parents to steer clear, even if it means having to go outside of the city to find a ballroom class for your child. read more

The beginner class's instructor, Grace, is fantastic at teaching the techniques and I see noticeable improvement with every class! I also love the studio itself and the atmosphere, the manager is super helpful and encouraging of everyone who comes. Looking forward to the next class! read more

My husband and I brought our daughter to Genesis after hearing about the studio from our friend Erica who has been dancing at the studio and raves about it all the time. Jasmine is 6 and very shy so we thought some more social interaction would be nice and help increase her confidence. The studio owner, Art, was extremely friendly and walked us through the various class levels. We brought Jasmine to their beginner kids class, Kids I, and she actually started opening up after a few group classes. She loved it so much that we are considering private lessons so that she can potentially find a partner to compete with! Grace is a very uplifting and wonderful instructor for the kids and her sweet and patient personality really encouraged Jasmine as a student with zero dance or fitness background. We also watched Arto teach more advanced dancers while group classes was occurring and I think it's great that Jasmine is also able to see what she can be able to do if she commits to dancing. The studio itself is also beautiful and we love Diana, the administrator, as well! read more

Genesis DanceSport Studio - Dance Schools Near Me - San Francisco, California

I came here for a beginner Latin group class after reading good reviews and for someone with two left feet, I had a great time learning samba. The music is catchy and the instructor explained all the steps clearly. I am definitely going to come back and try their adult beginner Standard classes. read more

Rented out the main dance studio for a birthday party. As a party rental, this place is versatile. Pros: This is a huge space. It could easily accommodate 75 people. There is the large dance floor, clean bathrooms, couch, stools, and a large back bar area, which is great for setting up food and drinks. Obviously no food and beverage minimums to hit with this venue. Whole wall of windows brings in natural light. Good sound system. Cons: Steep flight of stairs to get up to the venue (2nd floor) Light switch was hard to find to light up the back bar They book multiple parties here each night. We had it from 4:30-7:30, but another group was coming in at 8, so we really had to clean up on time. $1000 Rental fee isn't crazy for SF, but considering you don't have any help with set up or clean up, this is a no frills rental. read more

I've been taking the adult's classes for about 6 months at Genesis. It's a great school. The teachers are real dance professionals and are very dedicated to instruct professionally. Yurih is our teacher for most of the Thursday night Latin techniques classes. I like his teaching style: he's very precise and technical in explaining the basic movements, very patient and knowledgeable. He features in Edyta and Alec's Dancing Like the Pros DVDs series, check him out. He is a serious professional instructor (so are others in the school)! The adult's classes are held on both Monday and Thursday. Because of my schedule conflict, I attend mostly the Thursday Latin dance class. The Thursday class is taught in small groups by Yurih. Every individual is given attention to. It's kind of like a private lesson for the price of group class. At first, I was overwhelmed but later I discovered that it's all about basics with lots of details--which you can never practice enough. You won't find the details we learn in the class in ANY dance instructional dvd--I bought tons of DVDs but find them useful only for reference. Also, people are very nice and friendly there. I am now a loyal member of Genesis Dance Sport. By the way, the class is an excellent cardio workout! I've been doing martial arts for years but had never felt so physically challenged--great way to lose weight (though I am too skinny to afford it :P) all I have left is sheer muscle. No partner is needed. The beginner's is all about the beauty of basics. However, there is an advanced class from 9-10PM right after the beginner's for those who want more challenge and wanna learn more about styling. But many beginners usually like try the 9 o'clock class: it's non-progressive! read more

Excellent studio - I've been taking multiple lessons at Genesis (group & private) on a weekly basis for the past 6 months and highly recommend for everyone of all levels of experience and goals. Just to name a few things...the instructors are (1) incredibly skilled and accomplished; (2) great teachers that can identify what you should work on and adapt to how you learn best; (3) tailor lessons to your individual goals whether its social dancing or competing at the open level; and (4) really care and are dedicated to your progress and success. The prices are affordable, especially if you buy in packages. Also, the studio itself is very nice including a large well-maintained floor for plenty of practice space, mirrors, bathrooms, lounge space, etc. read more

I had the best time learning here! My fiancé and I signed up for dance lessons for our upcoming wedding and our instructor was amazing! She came up with a great routine and adjusted it to our comfort level. I would absolutely recommend Genesis to all my friends. read more

My wife and I got 4 waltz lessons for our wedding with Irina and Arto. They were fantastic! In only 4 lessons, we had a beautiful 3+ minute choreography and dance put together. We just practiced on our own a bit in between lessons and after and we were good to go! I really want to do more dance now, and, if I have the time, I'm going here. read more

I feel very misled by this company and their offers online / through Groupon. We purchased a groupon for Group Dancing lessons and when we arrived for our first class we found out that 1) the groupon was per person not per couple 2) that there were other dances beside the classic waltz / wedding dances being taught. The woman we interacted with was incredibly rude and claimed that all this info was on the website and the groupon. Supposedly, their website said what dances were being taught in which month etc etc. None of that was available when I looked. I went through all the information available and did not find anything she claimed was there. I feel like we were completely scammed and we will not be returning. read more

My husband and I opted to do a choreographed dance for our wedding and hired the team from Genesis Studio to help with choreography and learning some new dance moves. We had a great experience with everyone there, we worked with Shana and she choreographed something really fun for us. She was so easy to work with and kind, super easy to communicate with as well. Our friends and family were so impressed, they were asking for referrals. And we had such a great time, we want to come back for normal dance lessons! :) Definitely recommend ! read more

About a month prior to my wedding, my dad and I realized we were in some desperate need of dance lessons. I found Genesis Ballroom Dance, and we had a fabulous lesson with Rachel. In just two lessons, Rachel put together a fun, adorable, and impressive father daughter dance. Thank you so much!! read more

The instructors here are the best! They are great with kids, yet strict so they learn the proper technique. My daughter has learned more here in six months than years at other dance studios. Highly recommend! Arto & Irena are so patient...maybe one of these days I'll even take a class! That would be a true test of their patience! :) read more

My husband and I went to Genesis for a couple of dance lessons prior to our wedding. Overall, we had a good experience. We worked with Shana and she choreographed a beautiful dance. It took an extensive amount of practicing on our part, but in the end our guests were very impressed! While we ended up with a great result, these lessons were not necessarily for beginners. We had almost no dance experience coming in and felt very out of our league for the first few lessons. If you've never danced before, I would recommend being very straightforward about it and asking to learn a few focused moves. Either way, you'll end up with a beautiful wedding dance! read more

This studio is wonderful. The space is Big and airy and they have a huge dance floor. The teachers are very knowledgeable and great to work with. I love this place read more

This is a beautiful space however I am disappointed with the class I took a few weeks ago. I bought a Groupon for 8 classes and felt the instructor ignored myself and the other groupon user. The rest of the class, regular paying students were given excellent attention and care. The same music was played on repeat and I spent the night dancing solo- there was no partnering. read more

Purchased four lessons with Irina hoping to be somewhat prepared for our wedding Waltz.....our first appointment was double booked however they compensated us by having us joined the group lessons while waiting for our dance instructor. Irina was our instructor and she's extremely graceful and great at putting together a little cute routine for us to perform on our wedding day.....couldn't say we're able to Waltz perfectly however we were better than when we first arrived at the studio. Enjoyed the larger dance facility however it does get extremely hot and stuffy so dress accordingly. read more

Everyone should go to Genesis Dance School to prepare for their wedding dance! After only 4 lessons with Irina, my fiancé and I learned a beautifully choreographed dance to our first dance song. Everyone at the wedding could not believe our dancing skills and said we looked like professional dancers even though we each had 2 left feet before meeting Irina. Thank you!!! read more

Thanks to Genesis Dance School my fiancé and I have an awesome dance for our wedding!! Sarah was an amazing choreographer and so much fun to work with. She got us to relax and have a great time. Matteo provided great recommendations to help put the finishing touches on the dance! We really appreciate the studio's flexibility and help to make our day so special! Not to mention each class was a fun date with my fiancé! read more

This is a wonderful, wonderful place to learn how to dance. Regina was our dance instructor to learn a tango for our wedding dance (yes, you heard that right!) and she took it into her stride...and choreographed an incredible number that wowed the audience. Here is the video, in case you're curious...and these are two people who do not know how to dance! (especially the husband) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UxT2th-UlFE So we were very grateful to her for her patience and expertise...we had so much fun together, laughing and joking and coming up with a classy but sexy routine. The whole experience was welcoming, non-intimidating, reasonably priced (important for today's budget) and just all around fun! We would recommend this place (and especially Regina as an instructor) to anyone. read more

My husband and I took a dance class at Genesis with Irina to prepare for our first dance at our wedding. I must say, aside from cake tasting, this was one of our funnest wedding activities! The price was right and since it was a private class, we received much needed attention and guidance. We were able to tweek things we didn't like and Irina was very flexible with our after work hours. We did four one hour sessions and practiced at home. It was nice to set aside time once a week to enjoy each other's company in the midst of crazy wedding planning. Irina responds quickly to emails and is a dream to work with! read more

In preparation for our wedding, Arto taught us a routine within an hour! We have more confidence about our first dance and we have such a blast practicing! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! read more

Being a long-time salsa dancer and general lover of dance, I wasn't sure what was going to happen with my not-so-coordinated fiance. But he really enjoyed the first few group lessons we took. Our instructor was very patient and took a lot of time with the basics. He was so motivated after, that we signed up for four months of privates! Irina was wonderful and was patient with us even when we started running out of time to practice. The waltz routine she put together was so sweet and beautiful. She pushed us both beyond anything we could have expected; yet manageable for him and even a bit challenging for me, which I loved! She really helped us create our perfect first dance. We're definitely looking forward to coming back and learning more styles! read more

My first dance class in San Francisco was at Genesis Dance studio. I was shocked to see Edyta Sliwinska from Dancing with the Stars teach adult and kids dance classes. Apparently she is one of the owners and her teachers are super professional and great with dance lessons. She actually talked to me and cared about what I wanted to learn on my dance lessons. This was an awesome dance experience in San Francisco and I would highly recommend it. Really fun. read more

My experience at the Genesis Ballroom Dance School can be summed up in one word...ok, two words - FRIGGIN' AWESOME. Not only did I learn to "own" the dance floor with unprecedented confidence, but they helped me get into the best shape of my life. The instructors here are from ABC's Dancing with the Stars, so you know they're not short on expertise. Despite their success, they're the most down-to-earth, genuine people and make you feel at home on your first lesson. I recommend this dance school to dancing buffs and newbies alike - Genesis has something for everyone looking to get/stay in shape and pick up dance steps you can apply anywhere. read more

I've been taking pro-am lessons at Genesis. I have had positive experiences with the instructors, Arto and Irina. I have my dance lessons by both Arto and Irina, who are excellent, passionate, inspiring, humorous, and professional instructors. They are knowledgeable, patient, ability to demonstrate techniques that make it easier to follow. Irina and Arto also provide strong attention to detail of techniques and helpful feedback. I was able to learn each Latin dance routine, cha cha cha, samba, rumba, in 2 lessons on each dance by Irina and practice on my own in between my next lesson. Irina and Arto would continue to provide further feedback on how to improve on detail techniques. They both help me work toward my progress and provide relevant suggestions for improvement and work rigorously in helping me prepare for my first dance competition. Overall, inspiring and supportive instructors who nurture your growth and help you working toward your goals. Highly recommended! read more

I have been taking the private lesson with Arto and group lesson with Nathalie for more than 6 months. I really like working with professionals of this studio. The atmosphere there is so friendly and pleasant. Definitely recommend.

We were thrilled to find this studio and have Natalie as our teacher! She took a fairly complicated song for beginners and quickly turned it into an easy to learn routine. She was so much fun to work with and very accommodating with our schedule as well. We have come a long way since our first class and look forward to showcasing our new dance to the guests at our wedding in just a few weeks! Highly recommended! read more

We were thrilled with the dance instruction/choreography we got with Victoria in preparation for our first dance at our wedding. When we contact Genesis, they recommended to come in for a 1 hours private class and take it from there, with the intention of doing 2 or 3 lessons. We ended up only taking one lesson with our busy schedule, but it was just enough time to create a simply but beautiful dance that our guests (and we enjoyed). We practiced at home following the lesson and on the day of the wedding, the dance went without a hitch and with praises from our family. I would definitely recommend Genesis to another couple looking for a little guidance in preparation for their first dance. read more

Aloha!!... I was an instructor that taught Polynesian (Hula and Ori Tahiti) dance classes at Genesis. Can't say enough positive things about Genesis. Watching Arto craft his craft while he's teaching young men, women and couples is a testament to his relentless pursuit of greatness. Although our classes never intermixed, there was a high class of respect between the two of us. The studio space is too good to be true - - especially in the Richmond District of San Francisco. Be prepared for a workout at Genesis. If you're thinking of taking ballroom dance or just dancing to dance, I would highly recommend Arto and his team of artistic dancers. You will not be disappointed. read more

My husband and I were looking for a local SF dance studio to help us with our first dance at our wedding and ended up working with Irina. She was very nice and easy to work with - we were learning the salsa so we felt extra challenged. She was patient with us and honest about how many lessons we needed. She choreographed our entire dance and we felt ready and comfortable when we actually had to go through with it at our wedding. All of our guests LOVED IT and were cheering us on the entire time, and our videographer told us it was the best first dance he'd seen. Money well spent! I would definitely recommend working with Irina! Take the double lessons (two lessons booked in a row), it pays off and you learn a lot more. read more
