HIP HOP CLASSES I live in the East Bay, but work in San Francisco. ODC is one of two dance facilities in San Francisco I've been to that are walking distance to the Bart stations. After work I would go to ODC on certain days. I've been taking hip hop classes since 2007 at ODC. Almost 100% of the hip hop classes I enrolled are taught my Micaya. What I love about ODC is the studios aren't dark inside. Also the studios are spacious enough where you don't feel cramped. Even though I've taken hip hop classes for almost 20 years at ODC it doesn't feel dated. The one complaint I would make is regards to Studio B, which is where I take hip hop classes. Most of the studios downstairs have wooden floors however upstairs inside Studio B the Marley floor has too much grip or can be sticky. I'm surprised that throughout the years I haven't twisted my ankle or knee. Despite the Marley floor I enjoy taking hip hop classes at ODC. read more

ODC lacks professionalism and kindness in their management of children's classes. I asked to register for a certain mother and toddler class repeatedly and assumed I had a spot and only later found out that the school hasn't properly processed my registration and the spot was taken. I was told first that a spot would be offered as an exception but then (and after telling my daughter who was so happy) this offer was rescinded by a different staff member. What is more I was made to feel it was my fault when I was doing nothing wrong. Heartbreaking. read more

First time checking this place out. We had signed up for two FREE classes for dancer's health month: Unlocking the Myofascial System & Sweet Dreams for Dancers. I really appreciated the first class where the teacher taught us how to use a couple racquetballs on various parts of the body along the myofascial tissue. The second class, taught by Rachel F., was also very interesting and informative. I really appreciated Rachel's energy during the class, such a lovely person with a warm aura. I'm not a dancer but I accompanied someone who was, and we both really enjoyed learning different ways to take better care of ourselves. Despite the problems with the factorylike system for young children's dance, in which parents must stand outside and send their kids into an elevator, my main concern with ODC is that I paid online for a class for 200.00 (approx) and was charged 900.00. When I called to point out the error, I was told to "be patient" and spent way too much time on phone and email asking for a reimbursement. It is now ten days later and I still have not been refunded. I will never recommend working with any business that handles things this way. read more

After coming back nearly 10 years later (post-child rearing and COVID) I'm both delighted and relieved that ODC continues to be the vibrant community for dance and movement that it's always been. The teachers remain outstanding, and because it's tricky for me to have a regular routine, I love the flexibility of all the different offerings. And there really is nowhere else where you can feel like everyone is welcome - no matter age, size or ability. And at such affordable prices! I'm addicted to Rhythm & Motion (where the music remains fresh, while some old classics allow me to remember some of the moves from years ago), but I've also loved the other classes I've tried, from Pilates to strength-training. ODC has a wide assortment of dance related classes that can cater to both the type of music or dance you are interested in, as well as your busy schedule. For me that is what really makes this place stand apart from the rest.. You can find classes for Rhythm & Motion, as well as Old Skool Hip Hop Cardio, Salsa, and West African Guinean -- I have only started coming here a food times, but the vibe is pretty chill and there is a great amount of diversity. They also have ballet, pilates, barre, and yoga classes if your are looking for that as well. If you find yourself in a larger class it can be a little tricky to always see the instructor. So up to you to find your spot. No matter what, they are always open to questions, so just ask! Parking is a bit tight, but the place is two blocks away from Bart. read more

My 5-yr-old daughter and I love ODC!! I'm a big fan of the Rhythm & Motion classes - as a former professional dancer these are a great way to stay in shape and dance in a relaxed and energetic setting. My daughter has been taking Jr. classes for almost 2 years now. She started with Contemporary with Ms Lindsey and now does Ballet virtually with Ms Ayana. Both of them do an incredible job of keeping their dancers engaged, even over zoom! My daughter looks forward to her Ballet class every week and has so much fun while learning the foundations of dance! read more

This place is huge! There is a hospital for dancer inside and some toys and books for kids to kill time. I was having contemporary beginner class with Kristin. It was like 30 students in one class but Kristin separated us into two group so everyone had time and space to explore those choreography. She usually teach same choreography 3 weeks in a roll. I was having fun and great time with her. She is very enthusiastic and patient. This was my first contemporary experience but I definitely will come back for more. Ps. Me: " ....... " I absolutely have NO clue. I've been in a committed relationship for the past 5 years and frankly speaking, I'm not the most qualified person to ask this question to. I shrugged my shoulders and threw out the usual suggestions: have you tried bars? match.com? your neighbors' brother's cousin?? One Saturday morning after ballet class at ODC, I was hanging out in the common room and guess what I noticed?! GUYS! Lots of 'em. They're here on their laptops while waiting for their class. They're here meeting friends and heading to a taqueria for lunch. O.M.G. They are here! Come to think of it, even my ballet class has TWO guys in it. (well, that is amazing, right?! I'm sure the African tribal, salsa and hip hop classes have TONS more!) But with a teacher like Marisa Castillo who has extensive background in ballet and also incorporates Feldenkrais in her teaching, who wouldn't go to her class? The ballet studio itself is beautiful: artsy wooden beams, light gray Marley floor (canvas or leather ballet shoes both glide nicely) and skylights make this an airy, open space that'll inspire you to dance. Don't let your work schedule or any kind of excuses get in the way of taking a dance class at ODC, they offer 200 classes a week, 365 days a year. The website is chock full of information and is constantly updated, so if the staff at the front area don't have time to help you, you can get all your info on the web. I was so excited to tell my girlfriend to take a class here, but she already beat me to it when she said that a friend asked her to take a Flamenco class at ODC. Well, great minds think alike! I've been taking Micaya's Saturday hip hop class for weeks now. It's simply the best--fun, educational, and a fantastic workout. The ODC School has a beautiful facility! I've taken classes at 3 other studios, and they can't hold a candle to the beautiful location, interior architecture, and amenities. If you haven't taken a class yet, what are you waiting for? The first class is only $5. And if you enjoy it, you can purchase the following 4 classes for $24. Such a steal since drop-in is $15. I danced in high school and then took a 15 year hiatus and thanks to ODC I'm dancing again. They have plenty of adult beginner classes as well as more cardio dance classes. Everyone (students and teachers) at the studio are super welcoming and supportive. They have new student special that allows you to try a handful of classes for a slight discount. That was really nice, because it allowed me to try some classes I wouldn't otherwise have tried (i.e. hip hop). I wish I could come take class more often. I highly recommend for all levels (although if it's your first time ever dancing it may take a few weeks/months to feel more comfortable). read more

I come to ODC every Tuesday for Seema's 6:30 intermediate Bollywood class. She is a fantastic teacher who comes to class with a positive attitude and really knows how to make the choreography approachable. You leave the class having learned a decent chunk of a song, feeling accomplished and having had fun. I cannot recc her enough. My other classmates are also enthusiastic and delightful. She does start the class with 15 minutes of abs and stretching (which I don't like but I know is good for me). I have also taken Rhythm&Motion, Intermediate Belly Dance, Beginner Bollywood and Beginner Ballet and they were all enjoyable. read more

How is it February already??!! I was super bummed when Dogpatch Dance closed at the end of last year, but thank goodness we have ODC to keep the ball rolling! ODC has been around for years and I remember when they were much smaller back in the day. I've only been taking classes with them for the past year or two, and it's one of the best things I could have done! Unlike Dogpatch, there are no twerk classes, and no ratchet ballet. But if you want to learn actual technique while you're having fun, then this is your place! Their schedule is jam packed with just about any style you'd want to learn. My favorites are: - Samba on Fridays (If you want to feel comfortable learning Samba, then this is a fabulous class. It gets pretty crowded but I love the format of this class, AND live drummers!) - Tropicali on Saturdays (It's basically Jamaican Dance Hall and Caribbean moves, and I think it's also on Thursday nights) - Reggaeton on Sunday (The teacher of this class is really focused on technique but once you get it, this is a blast. I love the music and I always love these routines) - Sexitude on Sunday - (I just tried this one and I got a kick out of it. It's really sexy-attitude-fun and nothing serious). With that being said, I would say that classes here can be a bit intimidating when you first come in. Especially if you've never tried a dance class before. I can dance in the club, but I'm very much a novice when it comes to technique or learning any kind of routine. So for me, that's still a major hurdle, but I'm working through it! My ONLY cons for ODC are the bathrooms need a serious update. They're super small, usually dirty or messy, and they smell like they need air fresheners. With all of that being said, it's all love and I'm happy I finally found my groove! read more

When classes get full, like R&M classes, they really ought to figure out how to make the instructor visible to people in the back. Maybe a mirror placed higher up? Video screen? Also, how does one even break into the cult that is Rhythm and Motion? Is there a secret induction camp where you learn everything? You drop into class and everyone already knows the choreography. What? And Essentials is supposed to be slower paced, but felt like a hard class to keep up with as a drop in. R&M doesn't seem welcoming unless you plan to commit week after week kuz otherwise you have no idea what's going on--it's too fast and you can't easily see the instructor. R&M seem totally fun, especially Modern, but what's the secret to actually learning the routines? Is there an induction training boot camp of some sort? read more

As a kid, I used to take dance classes. I loved to dance. It made me feel free. It made me feel happy. As I got older & busier with school and life, I became less and less involved in dance. Recently, a friend of mine invited me to take a class here. Instantly, I fell in love with the place!! The state-of-the-art facility brought me back so many memories. The receptionists at the front were very friendly. It only costs $5 for your first time! There are some exceptions, so this discount doesn't apply to all the classes. Make sure you check the websites for add'l info and the class schedule: http://www.odcdance.org/school.php. It's $13 with cash & $14 w/out cash after that. They also offer class cards. You can find all the info on the website provided. I signed up for the rhythm and motions class, but the instructor didn't show up, so the class ended up being cancelled. We ended up getting a voucher to come back for a free rhythm and motions session. Luckily, we were also able to drop in to the beginning hip hop class two doors down. It was AMAZING! Sheree is such an awesome instructor. She is sensitive to everyone's needs and doesn't mind going over the moves multiple times. The best part is she comes up right in front of you & does it. She's super nice, so don't be afraid to ask her to repeat the steps if you get lost. We learned 3 8-count sets, which were pretty easy to learn-- nothing too complicated. It's a workout! YOU WILL SWEAT, so make sure you wear light clothes & sneakers or dance shoes. I will be back! If you've never been, give it a try! It's always fun to try new things. read more

This place is even more welcoming when you return from 2 long years away. So as a child, my only career ambition was to be an In Living Color fly girl, but they cancelled that show. I even used to line up my stuffed animals five deep and pretended to be dancing down the Soul Train line up, I even made my mom watch (showing my age here). I went onto be a dance minor in college and then abruptly stopped for five years. I was scared when I started with rhythm and motion classes with Dudley and felt completely at home after the first class. There is no other way to describe this class other than constant bouncing movement. The idea is that bodies in motion stay in motion. You'll walk away from the class with a bouncy free feeling. I later took the house dance footwork classes that are one of a kind. ODC is one of the most open, attractive and comfortable dance studios I have been in and I have found nothing comparable. The classes are pretty reasonably priced, lots of parking and it's only drawback is that it's in a bit of a dodgy neighborhood in the Mission. And by dodgy I don't mean like you'll get mugged/shot, I mean you'll be wondering why there's human feces on the sidewalk but that's not really that differnt from other parts of San Francisco. I recently returned to the studio during a trip back to San Francisco. I happily took a few classes to relive the good times. read more

I had a little trouble finding the place originally, but once I started going, I loved it. Their Rhythm and Motion class was so much fun. It got my body moving with a fast paced yoga ballet samba-esque dance routine that made the time just flash by. I hadn't taken a dance class in more than ten years, though would like to think I'm in mostly flexible shape so I had no problem keeping up, though my footwork always probably made her cringe. This dance studio is legit. I've taken a "rhythm and flow" and"hip hop" dance classes so far, and I think I will be back for more. The rhythm and flow class is pretty intimidating (I probably won't come back for this one). I knew I would struggle in this class as soon as I peeped a pair of those nude, ugly (IMHO) heels that only dedicated dancers invest in. I quickly got the feeling that just about everyone else in the class had a modern/jazz/some-sort-of-dance-that-I-don't-even-know-the-name-of dance background. I definitely free styled it 95% of the time. Don't worry, the 5% of the time I was able to follow along was during the warm up stretching and 5 minutes of ab work at the end. The hip hop dance class, on the other hand, was significantly more doable. Jenya came in as a sub, and she is AWESOME! There's a bhangra class I want to take and probably a bunch of other fancy schmancy classes that could be fun. Street parking, but a stone's throw from BART! read more

Haven't been here in a while but the review is mainly for the 2015 and 2016 hip hop and salsa classes I took on weeknights and weekends. Parking is a challenge to find here, but it's easily BART accessible. Positives: high-quality instructors for very affordable prices, excellent class-packages, diverse instructors; very newbie-friendly so if you're newer to dance, this is great for you; some instructors offer performance workshops and dance company recruitment, excellent communication from staff and faculty Negatives: not enough advanced instruction for hip hop and salsa classes - too many beginner classes offered, restrooms are very small, lobby areas are not big enough, can get crowded often Despite the negatives, this place easily deserves a 5-star review because of how formally organized the business is and how far you can go with their classes, not only inside but outside the dance floor. read more

Wow, So glad I discovered this spot! What a cool place in a cool neighborhood. I'm so glad places like this exist. I've taken Beginning Hip Hop, Tropicali, Reggaeton and Samba and have my eyes on Intermediate Hip Hop and Salsa Rueda. Style-wise, I prefer Tropicali and Reggaeton. You feel so accomplished and like such a badass walking out of those classes! Not to mention the immense amount of calories you burn while not realizing it. Tropicali Aimee is such a fun teacher! She offers great instruction to her students yet is incredibly accepting and inclusive. Reggaeton I really enjoy hearing Tikka's philosophy about dance and that she shares it with her students, both of which are unique to other dance classes I've taken. She places emphasis on understanding how and why you're moving your body; dance is like learning a language and movements should be intentional. Highly recommend if you're looking for a new type of movement and want to step out of your comfort zone a bit! (I'd give ODC 5 stars but sometimes the Samba class sizes are so large it's hard to strut my stuff with sass as the instructor recommends) read more

I live in sac but work in sf a lot so I'm always here. I took a few dance classes around town but decided to stick to micaya for her intermediate hip hop class. She is a great instructor and I'm sure others there are as well. I have driven here a few times and although parking is limited, I never had trouble finding one on that street. Again, there are parking, but not A LOT. their classes are also offered on ClassPass. So definitely check it out if you are the type to go around to different studios. read more

Highlights - The variety of classes offered is amazing. I've tried house and several beginning hip hop classes here. - They offer this on Class Pass or you can sign up on their web site. - Love that there is always such a diverse group of people in all age ranges and experience, which makes it so much fun since everyone is not judging and having a blast dancing. - Micaya's class is my favorite, her attitude and style makes it fun and allows you to focus on the technical aspect to perfect your moves. - For the larger hip hop classes, they have assistants that dance alongside the teacher to allow you to follow or see. Improvements - Not much space to wait in-between classes, so it tends to get crowded and people sit on the floors in the hallways before class begins. - Upstairs studio has multiple glass panels that connect, which make it hard to see yourself when you are trying to focus on your moves. - Bathrooms are a bit dirty, think school bathrooms since this is a school, but they do have lockers for you to put your belongings (a lot of people just bring bags into the studio and put it to the side, really spacious inside). Tips - Bart or take public transit. There is also a parking lot about a block away for payment. read more

ODC is a dance aficionado's candy store! Also, it is good for those who hate to exercise (like me). Luckily, I gots mad skills of persuasion. Me: Wanna go work out? Me: Hell no! Me: Wanna go dancing? Me: Hell yeah! Me: (under breath) Sucka. I LOVE ODC because 1) the space is gorgeous and clean, 2) they have a huge variety of classes and 3) the instructors are fantastic. You can let out your inner hip hop b girl, ballerina, salsa diva, or flamenco dancer. You can try out some afro-cuban or belly dance or swing. Oh and yoga too (this is Cali after all). ODC also has workshops and dance parties on some nights. Greedy me, I want it all! So the Fusion Rhythms class is perfect - various short routines where you be jammin' to all different types of music. The only thing about this class (as well as some of the others) is that they will teach the same choreography for a few weeks before switching to a new one. Some people like this because it means you can really get the choreography down. Personally, I get bored and would rather try a different class. All the instructors I've had have been great and of course everyone has their own style. For example, I've taken 3 of their hip hop classes with different instructors and there was a wide range of skill and cardio level even though all were billed as being "beginner" classes. (i.e. in one class I barely broke a sweat while another class caused me to hobble around like a grandma the next day because I was so sore). Shop around and see what works for you. And a final note for the single guys: These classes are a great way to meet women! After all, "Dancing is a perpendicular expression of a horizontal desire." (George Bernard Shaw). read more

After 15 years of taking modern jazz classes with my teachers, I am injured due to the resurfacing of their floors and can't go back to my community or the people and teachers who inspire me because repeatedly tore my meniscus until it was completely shredded and now requires surgery. I phoned the management about how dangerous the stickiness is and instead of calling me back, they threatened my teachers. Could the floors be better? Yes, if they let us open the door to the studio to air out the room only this isn't an option because the front desk staff doesn't want to hear music. WTF? Management and operations here unprofessional. I danced with many other people who are hurting themselves weekly due to the same issues. Is opening a door really costing you time, money, angst? Apparently you prefer your students hurt themselves than take care of the problem. Great way to do business. read more

Here are the highlights of my career in the performing arts: Age 3: as the shyest kid in my preschool, I am given a role as one of Lady's tramps in Lady and the Tramp. Non-speaking, of course. Great: a nonspeaking tramp. Age 4: little less shy, so I am blue bird in the Story of Orange. My best friend, who was the polar opposite of me, is the extroverted Orange. Made for some cute pictures! Age 7: study marine ecosystems in the second grade. I am cast as seaweed. Part of my costume comes undone in the tidepool boogie and I have to hold it up with my right arm. Age 13: I'm singing in the choir when I see lice scuttling on the girl's head below me. I scream, disrupting the entire performance. Age 17: dually cast as Titania and 'the wall' in A Midsummer's Night Dream. I come down with strep throat but the show must go on, and I vomit onstage. So, needless to say, I've been a bit performance wary in my adult life. I had been meaning to attend ODC for sometime, but visions of pirouetting and accidentally punching someone kept me from going. After a trip to Brazil, and some of Rio's best samba clubs, I vowed to overcome my fear of group performance so I can samba even when sober. I was nervous coming to ODC, so I brought a friend. Each time I return, it gets a little easier, thanks to the inspiring teachers and awesome students, who range from near experts to novices like myself. My favorite class is on Fridays, and I love that it gives me something healthier to do than my vicious dating and drinking cycle. The school is absolutely beautiful, with large and airy studios, a cozy lounge/library area, and a warm feeling in general when you enter. Despite still being anxious about the performance at the end of the workshop, my anxiety is contained by the nurturing environment, and by my newfound dancing prowess. And, just in case, I'm taking many precautions to ensure that my costume does not fall off! read more

So I'll start by saying that I've been a dancer all of my life- growing up taking jazz/ballet/tap at a studio, and later going on to minor in dance in college. When I moved to the Bay, I didn't know where I'd be able to keep dancing. And then I found ODC. I took advantage of their first 4 classes for ~$24 and I was hooked. Maybe it's just me, but I always walk into a class the first time super nervous. I didn't know if the Advanced classes would be way out of my league, and in the dance world, it's very easy to feel judged. ODC is NOT like this AT ALL. Advanced contemporary classes with Katie and Christine (who are INCREDIBLE teachers btw) were not full of pretentious professionals, and are totally manageable for a range of intermediate-advanced level dancers. Every time I take a class with these teachers, time just slips away and I feel so ~in it~ and just enjoy every second. I tried beginning hip hop with Micaya- I can see why every one loves her so much. Definitely a beginning level class (took us 1 hr to learn 3 8-counts), but incredibly fun nonetheless. Saturday release classes with Lizz are FAB. It's a mix of contact improv, yoga/pilates/strength training, and phrase work. One day I'll get my butt to ballet..... ODC is a tiny little haven, and I don't have 1 bad thing to say. There's street parking and also a parking lot 1 block down ($7 for all day on the wknds). The studio is only a few blocks from Mission, so you can take Bart, too. I have an office job and was worried there would only be beginning classes on the weekends but that's definitely not the case. If you've been waiting for the right time to take a dance class, just do it. Go online, look at their class schedule, and go. You will feel incredible. read more

Good: many class options. Nice big, clean studios. Modern space. Bad: whenever I get used to a class or a teacher, that class gets canceled. I've mostly noticed the turnover in my tap classes. Makes me wonder why the teachers don't last long. Three times now I've been burned by buying class cards, then the class I've been attending gets cancelled. If I don't find a new class to work with my schedule, I lose the money on the class card. This has happened THREE times. I'm done buying class cards. Also, not very welcoming. I always feel attitude from the people working the front desk. And when I try new classes, the teachers are sometimes rather attitude-y, as well. If you find a class that's a good fit for you, then it can be a great place. As for just exploring different dance classes for adults, it can be very disappointing. read more

I've just started taking classes here 2 weeks ago, and I already feel like I'll be a regular. The best class for my style so far has been Micaya's hip hop class. She's able to break down steps, rotate people so they all get a chance in front to see the moves and makes everyone feel completely at ease, regardless of whether you're a pro or newbie. I also really enjoyed Iddy's R&M class...at 7:30a.m! She gets people pumped at the beginning of the day and incorporates several different movement styles and beats. Word of advice: take public transportation, get dropped off by a friend, or be prepared with enough time to circle block after block to find parking. read more

If you're serious about channeling your inner dancer, come to ODC. Don't be intimidated if you're a beginner. They offer all skill levels in several types of dance. The variety of dance styles is fabulous. Times are great too, with classes available all weekend. Salsa rueda is awesome with great teachers. In just a few months, I really improved my following techniques and even got to perform in the Carnaval parade! That really was an unforgettable experience. Everyone should be in a parade at least once in their life. :) We also had the chance to perform in an ODC student showcase which was a blast. As for the other styles, The belly dancing class is cool if you're into tribal style. Afro-Brazilian is a crazy workout. That class was kinda intimidating because everyone seemed like they were Alvin Ailey trained or something. Totally felt like we were auditioning for SYTYCD! This is the kind of class where they don't baby you or anything - you're just thrown right in, learn some choreography, and go line by line. It was really intense, but we loved it and were sore the next day. The studio itself is great. Wonderful large rooms, high ceilings. Much more modern than their old location. I have to say, I stopped going to their old location because it smelled like one big old sweaty armpit. This place has no such ventilation problems. Parking in the area isn't too difficult. I've never had to park more than a block away. The front desk staff are very friendly and helpful most of the time. Nothing to complain about. read more
