Ask the Community - Geary Dance Center

Is Wednesday night afro-Brazilian still a thing? I contacted the instructor and did not receive a response. Thanks! 🙏

Hi Lauren, Thank you for your interest in Geary Dance Center! I'm Brooke Byrne, co-owner of the school. Yes, Afro-Brazilian Samba is still being held Wednesdays 8-9pm. It's a great class! All schedules and fees are set by the instructor who rents…

There's several class types for all genres (kpop, hip hop, popping, jazz funk, house) - for different levels! So many teachers to choose from, recently I've been taking Jepoy's Beg Hip Hop on Friday nights and they've been so fun! I plan to take others! Each class is $25 unless there's a special guest, and you can book the class online or do a drop in when you're there (They accept Venmo on site!) I typically book day of, but best to book in advance when it comes to special guests. I wish there were class packs of some sort because I would love to come more consistently. Parking is pretty easy on Fri nights, but I can't speak for the other days, as it is located in the city. They also have spring performance workshops, which I plan to do in the future! I'm excited to keep coming back!

I used to come a few years ago, and I recently started coming back. I was pleasantly surprised because the current batch of teachers is much better than it was before. I took Eddie Mina's class on 6/24/26, and I absolutely loved it. The vibes were great, the choreography was taught thoroughly, and Eddie is an excellent instructor. I'm only taking off one star because I wish students were more aware of dance class etiquette. I understand that dance classes are supposed to be fun, but constantly joking, talking, and being unfocused with your group of friends while the instructor is teaching is disrespectful (not only to the teacher, but also to everyone else who paid to be there and is trying to learn the choreography) It was distracting enough that it made me hesitate to come back to this instructor's class if his crowd of students continues to be like this. (I didn't experience this in Austin's class, so I think the crowd varies by the teacher) In LA, most dance studios and instructors emphasize class etiquette and remind students to stay quiet and focused while the teacher is demonstrating or explaining choreography. I think that really helps create a respectful learning environment for everyone. I hope City Dance Studio can consider reminding students about class etiquette at the beginning of class or by posting a simple reminder on Instagram. I genuinely enjoyed the instructor and would love to keep coming back but the student environment is the only thing keeping me from coming back.

After coming back nearly 10 years later (post-child rearing and COVID) I'm both delighted and…read morerelieved that ODC continues to be the vibrant community for dance and movement that it's always been. The teachers remain outstanding, and because it's tricky for me to have a regular routine, I love the flexibility of all the different offerings. And there really is nowhere else where you can feel like everyone is welcome - no matter age, size or ability. And at such affordable prices! I'm addicted to Rhythm & Motion (where the music remains fresh, while some old classics allow me to remember some of the moves from years ago), but I've also loved the other classes I've tried, from Pilates to strength-training. I'm also really going to try to make that hip-hop class...;)

After work I would go to ODC on certain days. I've been taking hip hop classes since 2007 at ODC. Almost 100% of the hip hop classes I enrolled are taught my Micaya. What I love about ODC is the studios aren't dark inside. Also the studios are spacious enough where you don't feel cramped. Even though I've taken hip hop classes for almost 20 years at ODC it doesn't feel dated. The one complaint I would make is regards to Studio B, which is where I take hip hop classes. Most of the studios downstairs have wooden floors however upstairs inside Studio B the Marley floor has too much grip or can be sticky. I'm surprised that throughout the years I haven't twisted my ankle or knee. Despite the Marley floor I enjoy taking hip hop classes at ODC.

She insults them when she spats at the entire class, baiting them with "WHY ARE YOU HERE?? NO ONE KNOWS WHY THEY'RE HERE!!".... She places beginning students deep in the back row, giving b.s. excuses like she does that so they're able to follow experienced students better. This could be helpful but even the experienced students are a little off from Tika at times. And then she yells "ARE YOU EVEN PAYING ATTENTION?" at the beginning students for not being able to follow her exactly. She stops the dance throughout class to berate the entire class. Everyone, as a whole, she talks down to. No one is goofing, chatting or not paying attention and she still flips out acting all insulted because we aren't understanding the cultural or historical significance of the dance. Meanwhile many, many of the dancers are of actual Latina or Caribbean descent and don't need to be scolded on our heritage. And she now speaks with a weird, b.s. fake accent. She didn't used to have one! I actually used to take samba classes with her, as students, back in the early 2000's. Same attitude, no accent. In a time in the world there is so much negativity and hostility towards others, this is the last thing I want to experience (and pay for) when going to dance. Can we all try to start with kindness, love and give the respect that we all deserve?

A very special thank you to Arto, who was wonderful to work with. Thank you, Arto and Genesis Dance Studio, for all the time, patience, and encouragement. She began dancing at WSPA at just two and a half years old, training in ballet, tap, jazz, hip-hop, and musical theatre. As she has grown, so has her passion for dance, and she now focuses her training on ballet and contemporary. Her training at WSPA has given her opportunities we could have only dreamed of when she first started. As a ballet and contemporary soloist, she has earned recognition and scholarships at prestigious competitions including Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP), New York City Dance Alliance, California Dance Classics, Universal Ballet Competition, and ADC IBC. Watching her receive these accomplishments has been incredibly rewarding, but even more meaningful has been seeing the confidence, discipline, artistry, and joy she has developed along the way. One of the most special full-circle moments has been The Nutcracker. She began performing in WSPA's Nutcracker as a Baby Angel at seven years old and dreamed of someday dancing the role of Clara. This year, at 12 years old, that dream came true when she was cast as Clara. Watching her step into that role on the same journey that began when she was a little girl has been unforgettable. I am incredibly grateful for the teachers who have invested in her, challenged her, believed in her, and helped nurture her love of dance. Her accomplishments are a reflection not only of her hard work, but also of the training, mentorship, and opportunities she has received at WSPA. For our family, WSPA is so much more than a dance studio. It helped shape me as a young dancer and is now helping shape my daughter into the dancer and young person she is becoming. Being able to share this connection across generations makes WSPA an incredibly special part of our family's story.

Co-presented with the non-profit Artists in Motion Bay Area (AIMBA), this full-length ballet highlights the rigorous training and technical discipline of its student dancers. It serves as a rite of passage where young performers progress sequentially through roles--from playful mice and graceful angels to snowflakes and, ultimately, coveted principal parts like the Sugar Plum Fairy. Production & Choreography Under the artistic direction of Malu Rivera-Peoples (https://www.activityhero.com/biz/184-westlake-school-for-the-performing-arts-daly-city-ca), the choreography respects the demands of classical ballet while keeping the performance lively and engaging for audiences of all ages. The school frequently pushes classic boundaries by incorporating diverse performance styles, including a highly praised hip-hop adaptation that reimagines Clara's journey into an energetic, contemporary wonderland. Technical Execution Though it features a youth cast, the production values are entirely professional. The synchronization during complex ensemble numbers--such as the Waltz of the Snowflakes--reveals the extensive, tireless rehearsal hours the students commit to the stage. The costumes are vibrant and meticulously tailored, complementing elaborate set pieces that capture the whimsical magic of Tchaikovsky's timeless narrative. Venue & Atmosphere While historically staged at major venues like San Francisco's Palace of Fine Arts Theater, recent seasons have found a magnificent home at the San Mateo Performing Arts Center (https://www.wspadance.com/nutcracker). The theater provides excellent sightlines and acoustics, amplifying the community-centered, warm holiday spirit that WSPA infuses into every performance. Overall Rating: 4.8 / 5 An inspiring showcase of youth talent that blends discipline with pure festive joy, making it a highly recommended alternative to professional resident company productions for families across the Bay Area.
