I recently moved to the area and wanted to find a new place to get my haircut. Calling Vain, the receptionist who took my call told me a men's cut would be $70-$85, depending on the stylist. When I asked if they charge the same for men as they do for women, the receptionist sounded quite offended and incredulously asked me "Yes, why wouldn't we?" I got a little caught off guard by her snappy response, I'm just a potential customer! Easy lady, easy. Here's some common reasons why a salon might charge less for men, ignoring the widespread ubiquity of the practice: 1) Typically Men's haircuts take less time. 2) Men come every 3 weeks, they are bread and butter clients 2) Men typically require less blow-drying, finishing, etc. 3) Men typically require less product in their hair. Either way, I'll take my business to a place with friendly staff, ones who can contain their contempt even if I do ask a stupid question or two. read more

I've had two great experiences at Vain West Seattle. On my first visit I came in for a quick trim to tame my wild tangles, and Braeden did fabulous work giving my long, mop-like tresses structure and volume. We also realized we use to be neighbors while living in SF just over a year ago - crazy! On my second visit I met with Nicola after deciding that I needed a total transformation. Tired of my length and mousy brown color, but not having a clue what I wanted, I put myself in the very capable hands of Nicola with only three requests: (1) I want a new cut, length doesn't matter, (2) I want COLOR, and (3) don't shave my head. Nicola took great care in asking me about my current hair care/styling habits, and what I might be interested in taking care of (frequency of return visits for touch-ups and what not). What ensued were three of the most interactive and collaborative hours of hair styling I've ever experienced! Nicola really hit it out of the park on this one; a fun-funky short cut with piecey/pixy bangs and bold all over color with pops of a vibrant cool red - AMAZING! It's puzzling to me that people go into salons telling their stylists EXACTLY what they want, down to how the stylist should hold their scissors and scratch their asses. Stylists are trained and experienced artists who have spent years honing their craft and staying up on the latest trends and techniques. Give your stylist the opportunity to go balls out on your hair and I guarantee you won't be disappointed. Additionally, I love the line of jewelry Vain carries in store. I think I walked out with two pairs of earrings and a necklace on top of my cut and color, and the beautiful thing is that the jewelry is super funky (and cheap!). Originally written May '12: In an effort to not drive all over the world to find a wavy/curly hair stylist I was super excited to hear Vain opened in West Seattle. Apparently I was so excited that when I booked my appointment I only made it for a cut and forgot about the color... long story short I had 2 different appts on 2 different days (they really did try to accommodate me which I appreciated). They were friendly and did an excellent job. They use Deva hair products as well as use the Deva methods in cutting and styling hair. I felt confident in their work and recommend them highly. Random tips: -There's free 2hr street parking in the front and there's a 3 hours free lot in the back (I believe the entrance at the back is shared with The Beer Junction). -In the waiting area there's various accessories (jewelry, handbags, scarves, etc) and hair products for sale. read more

By all means the lady was nice. And I paid $150 plus a 25 dollar tip. My hair looked okay and I thought to give is a day and it might just take some use to, plus the lighting isn't great in the salon. I even showed a picture of what I wanted and she said my old hair color kind of looked like it anyways. So she bleached my roots and toned my hair. My hair fades from a reddish color to something else. You can even see underneath my hair it looks like grow out. I don't know I'm just really upset. This is the first time I ever called to say I wasn't happy with my color. No sympathy or a sorry or nothing. I was even asked if I signed a waiver. First of all I ask if the color from the picture I brought was achievable. I even told her I wanted to cover my grays. If all these things were a problem of course I would of said no don't do it and went with my normal full foil highlights. I just want it fixed. They set me up with an appointment next week and said if all I wanted is single color? Well obviously that's all I wanted from the picture. I don't know what it will take to fix my hair so I can't really say what I want. VAIN is very cool. I am not very cool. When I walked in and saw all of the trendy and beautiful stylists and the airy design of the salon, I was like 'uh-oh, I've come to the Taj Mahal of haircuts for what is essentially a Sports Clips special'. Sam was my stylist, who again was way too cool for me, and I was certain her coolness would be wasted on me as I have been getting the exact same haircut for years. Sam listened to the haircut I wanted, and seriously leveled me UP!! I left with this amazingly cute, Zoey Deschanel vibes, haircut that wasn't dissimilar from what I asked for, but somehow not what I have ever had before. Sam took my plain/average haircut request and was able to give that idea some style and edge. It was so cute and I loved it. I have never had salon or stylist loyalty before (like I said, same boring haircut for years) but I will now see Sam at VAIN exclusively. This review is specifically for Hedy, who works at both the West Seattle and Downtown locations. I'm new to Seattle and needed a new hair guru to wrangle my damaged locks. Low and behold, Hedy is my answer! I called middle of last week to book an appt for a touch up color and cut, and Hedy had an opening that Sunday in West Seattle. Hedy is new to VAIN, but she's a seasoned stylist who totally gets hair and can translate my vague descriptions of what I want. I absolutely love my haircut - the best one I can remember in years! It's been 3 days since my appointment, and my style is still rockin' - dirty, of course, but it looks great! I only had my roots touched up, but the color and blend is a perfect match, so I'm excited to go big during my next color session. I just can't believe it took me this long to find VAIN, I'm in love with this salon & is infatuated with my stylist, Sam! Sam literally saved my hair that a previous salon had...I will be nice & use nice word and just say SCREW UP, like majorly screw up & left me balling in tears screw up. I've had my hair done everywhere; from my kitchen to Asian chop shops to high end salons and I must say this is by far my favorite, it's professional yet hip & laid back. Even in a 5 star salon where I went for a long time before I found VAIN, I was still unsatisfied with the diva attitude I was always getting, but still went because I liked the results & figured I would just ignore the snobby comments as long as they could provide me with great hair. Not a problem here at VAIN because not only do they do fantastic hair, they have the friendliest & down to earth humans working for them; everybody from front desk to the artists are so so nice, but not in an overly fake way, especially my Sam! Like I said, I went to a highly reputable salon before & this was my last straw when I went to their different branch location & had a higher level artist who absolutely refuses to retouch my blonde hair because "blonde isn't appropriate for Asians" & "we can't have you leaving looking unpresentable". Long story short, they convinced me to get "low lights" to just break up the blonde, but still be pretty blonde. I thought I would trust their "professional" judgment & at the end when I looked at the mirror, my hair was back to black with like 5 pieces of this nasty looking greenish blonde chunks. Need I tell you, I'm not too picky about my hair at all, but you can't just trick a blonde back to black and not apologize because you're not comfortable seeing other race having the same hair color as you. What happened had happen & being angry doesn't bring my old hair back so I went on Yelp & found VAIN for a corrective color. I was skeptical with all the 5 star reviews, but man, it really is that great once you experience it. I scheduled a consultation, I didn't care with who, I just didn't want to look like a depressed Frankenstein princess with black & green hair anymore. I met Sam for the consultation & it was different; I just wasn't used to seeing someone that gorgeous with such a kind-soul. Most stylist would have snap off at me and said it's impossible to get what I want because they are too lazy to deal with my naturally dark & ridiculously long hair, not Sam. She booked out a WHOLE entire work day so she has time to work with me, granted we couldn't get that spot for like 2 months because she's that awesome to be booked out, but that gave my hair time to breath. I was so excited when that day finally came & even if my hair didn't turn out perfectly, I thought it was so nice of someone to give up their clientele on a busy Friday for me. After 7 hours that consist of a couple color removers, some bleaching, & a full foil; MY HAIR TURNED OUT STUNNING. It wasn't blonde again because I actually wanted to have hair attached on my head, but it a very nice light brown & it cost me wayyyyy less than what I was expecting. Usually I feel like color always get less flattering as it fades, I don't know what Sam did, but my hair actually looks better & better as it fades. After a week, I got asked if I colored my hair again because it's lighter & that's exactly what I want, muhahaha. I get compliments on my hair ALL THE TIME, not only did Sam gave me beautiful hair, but she makes me feel beautiful now through the experience I had sitting in her chair because she's genuinely is kind and care for me. On top of that, I learn that artists here can pick to perform or not perform certain type of services so it's really pleasant to know that your artist genuinely loves & is excited on whatever they're doing on you. I come for retouches often now & one time I called in last minute for an appointment which Sam wasn't available so Greta did my hair & she's just as awesome. Greta matched my color perfectly & gave me sassy bangs which by the way; bang trims are free if you come back within a month which should be about the time it grows back anyways. THANK YOU VAIN for being such a cool, edgy, cute little salon that provides great results without being caught up having the "Beverly Hills" mentality. I hope Sam & Greta never grow old so they can do my hair forever & forever! I noticed Vain when I was walking around the Junction. The salon was not open yet but the accessories were on display and drew me in. The decor is awesome! Love the reclaimed wood wall and cement floors. The staff was very friendly and recommended Sam to cut my hair. She has cut my hair twice now and I love it! She understands how to cut short, layered hair with some curl. I also appreciate the 4 week trim that is included. Helps my hair stay cute & stylish between cuts. Hannah did an excellent job achieving a true grey color. In the world of Pinterest I realize how hard it must be for stylists to explain why "real" hair won't do that, however, Hannah took my Pinterest picture and matched it perfectly. I had some pretty damaged hair from a failed bleach and tone and she was able to carefully even out the color with minimal damage. She was calm, listened to my concerns and took her time. My experience was totally Ok. I wouldn't go too far in either direction of that. I paid extra for a senior stylist, because that's who was available, and I left with a cut that was just fine and a style that was a little product-heavy. Everyone was cordial, but not overly friendly. On the downside, the place just didn't feel clean. The station where I had my haircut still had previous clients' hair on both the floor and the chair. I had to brush clumps of cut hair off my chair because I didn't want to sit in it, and the stylist just watched me clean it off. As I was getting my hair cut, I looked around and noticed the same lack of cleanliness at other stations, with client hair scattered here and there, in the arms of chairs, in brushes, etc. Their system was down, so they promised to give me a call for a follow-up trim which they said was included, but that call never came. Because my experience was just "ok" and because of the cleanliness issue, I didn't call to follow-up either. Judging by other reviews, perhaps I just caught the place on an off day -- it's good to see that others have had a great experience. For the money though, I will be checking out other options and won't be sending friends this way. read more

Even though my stylist, Emily, is known to be the queen of curly hair, I have to say she does an amazing job with super straight, fine hair, too. I've seen her at all three locations, though she isn't downtown anymore, and she always has the best suggestions for products and styling so that I can try to keep up her magic when I leave the salon. I was so hopeful when I scheduled my appointment at VAIN in West Seattle. I have lived in the neighborhood for a year, and have been searching relentlessly for a stylist that can compare with the one I left behind in California. So I set up a time to go in for some ombre highlights. I figured this would be super easy...I have naturally medium blonde hair and it was grown out to an all one length bob (past the chin) with side bangs The gal at the front desk was super friendly, and the salon is very hip, but has a coziness at the same time. My stylist Amelia greeted me and sat down and we discussed in length what she was going to do. I showed her a picture of how I wanted my highlights to look, and she actually suggested a technique that would save me time and money! I was so excited! While she was checking out my hair she mentioned that the ombre would stand out more if i had "a little bit of layering". I explained that I was growing my hair out and wanted to stay away from a ton of layering, and that I was recovering from a bad cut I'd received in April. She then said she wouldn't touch the length, and would only layer so it wouldn't look so heavy. I totally agreed, because I probably did need some structure in the cut and some dead ends chopped off! I have to say, the color she chose was great. It totally complemented my natural shade, and she applied it with a technique that was supposed to leave my ends a lighter blonde. WRONG. When she washed my hair, I was left with hair that was all one shade. It was a nice shade of sandy blonde, but definitely NOT ombre. I was secretly bummed, but hopeful when she told me to wash the ends of my hair with baking soda to lighten it up? (umm...ok) Moving onto the cut, she used a method I had never seen, basically she got chunks of my hair and point-cut huge sections, which gave me a very "choppy" look. I was getting VERY nervous, (since I told her I was growing it out) and when she flat-ironed it, it looked terrible! She then went on to curl it with the flat iron, (I always curl it since my hair is medium texture and naturally wavy) and it actually looked super cute when I left. I was hopeful for the first few days, but I can't ignore how bad this cut is. The length is ok, she did save that, but the entire crown of my head if full of choppy, wispy, 80's rocker-chick layers. (mullet, anyone?) The ends never did lighten up, but the color lasted pretty long for a semi-permanent. Maybe I wouldn't be so sad if I had actually got my nice ombre highlights, but instead I just ended up with yet another haircut I have to grow out. NOT GOING BACK. read more

Vain and I have a long history. I heard about them wayyy long ago when the owner volunteered her time with a leadership camp I did as teenager. Turns out Vain still only "advertises" via their donations of time and funds to different local groups, generally focusing on female leadership and empowerment. They are just kind of awesome that way. So long ago I had hair cuts and coloring done there, it was great. Fast forward to now. I have been seeing Braedon for 2+ years and I will skip meals to have the money to keep seeing him. I have had my share of stylist disasters, one of the worst being "fat girls need long hair" followed by the refusal to cut my hair, and to be able to go to a stylist where I relax completely because I trust them to cut my hair is amazing. I am a short hair girl and Braedon always seems to find a fun way to cut my hair, it never looks quite the same but always looks good. The haircut price has gone up, from 30 a year and a half ago to 50 currently, its steep but to me worth it on multiple levels. The free trim is basically another hair cut for me, the salon is locally engaged, and the stylists are awesome. I really like the West Seattle location for the parking ease, downtown location is just a nightmare to park at, and because I don't do color the 3 hour limit has never been a problem. I love going through the store in the front, they have some of the most unique jewelery I have ever seen and its very reasonably priced. The owner actually goes to New York to pick out all the stock they have. Tip: I found Braedon through doing their 15 dollar haircuts on fridays (not sure what day it is now) so if you are not sure that is a good way to try out a few of the stylists before committing. Also their website has information on all their stylists and their specialties so if you are looking for something super specific do some research first on who is best suited for you. read more

I almost don't want to write this review because it will make her impossible to get in with but Hedy is amazing. She's very sweet and personable and it felt like I was talking to a friend for the 2.5 hours I was there. I haven't colored my hair in 20+ years so going in for highlights/balayage she calmed my nerves. She was running about 15 minutes behind but apologized for it and made sure I was out of the salon on time without compromising quality. My hair is a dark brown color, Hedy suggested to not cover it up as I wanted to baby step into the world of color and not quite go in the deep end head first. She put the foils in first and then painted on the other color second all the while being sweet as can be and really listening to what I wanted, made really helpful suggestions and it was just an overall great experience. Quick disclaimer: I have come to realize that you really need to see the same stylist a few times before they really "get" how to make your hair perfect by your standards. Just like with anything, practice makes perfect. This goes for anywhere, not just VAIN. I have been to every VAIN location, but I have the pleasure of being a five minute walk away from this location and it has quickly become my favorite. I can always get an appointment, they remember who I am, and I never feel rushed. Misa helped me through cutting my super long, super damaged, security blanket hair. Emily is awesome and I have had nothing but amazing haircuts from her. I've been seeing Emily for less than 2 years. One thing I love about Emily is there are no surprises with her. If you tell her you want only an inch off, she'll only take an inch. If you want you want collar bone length hair, she'll give you that, not an inch shorter or longer. My haircuts seem to last forever because the way it grows out is still as good as the first day she cuts it. I have thick straight asian hair which needs the right amount of thinning out to wear down. Emily knows exactly how to cut and thin my hair and I only trust her with my hair. I work Mon-Fri 8-5pm and I normally have to wait a couple weeks to see her after I make an appt because her weekend and late night appts fill up so quick. read more

After spending three years going with the brightest all over colors I could find, I wanted to have a natural tone with unnatural pink highlights, something I knew I could not achieve on my own. I get my hair cut at 7 in Pacific Place, and THEY were the ones who said "We could do it, but call Vain. They're the experts and will give you exactly what you're looking for." And right they were! I was at their West Seattle location and had an appointment with JANAE. One of the things I appreciate most is good customer service. I want to feel like a valued customer by those I give my hard earned money to. Janae not only spent time mixing different colors for me to chose from (while offering some expert advice), she was attentive and a blast to talk to, and truly is a master at her craft. I appreciated that she doesn't "double book", so I had her full attention for all three hours. There was not one point where I was left under a hair dryer while waiting for her to cut someone else's hair, as can happen in so many salons. The final result was better than I'd imagined. As a customer of 7, I walked up to the counter ready to pay somewhere around $300+ for three hours worth of time and the many steps that had gone in to achieving the desired effect. When they told me it was less than half what I'd set in my mind, my jaw dropped and I nearly flung my card at the counter wanting to say "You should take it all!!!!" I saw Lydia, a newer stylist to the Seattle area but definitely not new to hair. Seriously she's a pro! Highly recommend if you have fine hair and if you love gorgeous color. I have seen her for a haircut, bleach and tone, and twice to do blue ombre color, a different blue each time. The color fades beautifully as well. I have never gotten so many compliments in my life. Lydia is truly a hair artist. She really takes her time making sure it is perfect. If you can afford the higher prices at Vain, definitely do it. Be prepared to be there quite a long time as the stylists, especially Lydia, are perfectionists and will not rush you out the door. I wish I could have her do my hair every month! read more

I am in the interior design industry so I have a solid understanding of how to use light in bathrooms so people look their best while doing their hair and makeup. I am so happy I found VAIN. I just moved to Seattle and have been in desperate need of a hair stylist since my normal (awesome) stylist is now 12 hours away. I checked Yelp and found that VAIN was close by so I gave them a call. They were able to get me in the next day, which of course was an unexpected surprise. I had to wait a while once I got to my appointment because my stylist was still working on another client, but it's ok because my experience totally made up for the wait. The front desk staff was friendly and offered me a shirt to wear so that mine wouldn't get ruined (very cool). They have free tea & water and tons of goodies to look at/purchase while you wait. My stylist, Tara, was awesome. She was so friendly and knew exactly how to give me what I asked for. I came out with beautiful, healthy, shiny, richly colored hair and my cut is perfect (I am growing out a side shave that covers half of my head so this can be tricky to cut and style). She hooked it up with some free soap samples which was nice, and the best part of all: product. They use and sell Davines products at this salon and if you don't know about that brand you are totally missing out. I was thrilled! I ended up buying shampoo and conditioner and I am sooo excited to use it. Just a warning- this place is a bit on the pricier side so just recognize that it's a nice treat for your hair and it's worth it when it comes out healthy. I was used to paying about $60 for a cut, color, and style at my old salon and today I paid $135+ $56 for product. Yikes. Very happy though and I am so glad I found my new salon! read more

Vain is surprisingly affordable for the wonderful, expert service you receive. I went in to get my hair dyed/trimmed before my wedding then went back three days before for a color touch up and for them to dye my extensions. Danielle went above and beyond for me - she was able to give me advice about products that were best, how to properly treat my hair and guidance on what kinds of colors wouldn't bleed onto my dress. During my last appointment (three days before my wedding and the morning before my rehearsal dinner) she dyed my extensions and the color turned out a bit uneven. I was happy with them but she was adamant that she did not want me to leave with an inferior job. She knew that I wanted to have them for the rehearsal and she went out of her way to dye the extensions a second time, not charge me extra for product and she made sure they were ready for me to pick up before my rehearsal dinner. And they looked absolutely perfect. She is incredibly kind, very personable and best of all she is an expert at color and cuts. I highly recommend her! read more

Janae might be my favorite person in the world. I tried so many high priced salons over years after moving to Seattle. Everyone wanted to keep my hair boring, long and layered. I found Janae after reading her profile on the Vain site "What's your dream hair day? Longer uncolored hair and a client ready to do anything- a blank canvas for cut + color!" Bingo! It wasn't long before she was chopping a foot off and putting in purple highlights. My hair grows super thick and super fast so I get the joy of seeing Janae every 4 weeks for a cut or trim and there's always something fun we can do to my hair, angling bobs or bleaching it all. On top of all this she's a blast to talk to, never wanders off or gets distracted and doesn't let you leave until you're 100% happy. Other things I love about Vain is how friendly the front desk staff is, the super cute items in the front boutique area, and the free parking lot behind the place since I'm awful at parallel parking. My wife convinced me to go here and at first I was apprehensive because salons can be a little overwhelming and expensive for just a haircut. But I've gone once and now I'm hooked. The place has a cool vibe and I like the fact that they are prompt and that I can schedule my haircuts. Yes it cost more but when you factor in the free clean-up cuts it's actually the same price. My stylist is Emelia and she AWESOME! I can truly tell a difference in the quality of the cut and she has introduced me to some new hair products and my scalp is much happier. read more

What a wonderful experience for my 14yr old daughter Molly. She had long curly hair that she just didn't want to deal with and wanted it short. I did the leg work with finding a salon/stylist who can cut and work with curly hair. After talking with the front girl at the front desk she told me that Emily and TT were very good with curly hair. I wanted to get this done for my daughter as soon as possible and they had an opening on friday with TT. The salon is very hip without being pretentious. TT was very thorough with what she was doing with Molly. After she was done Molly was all smiles and just loved it. Thank you TT for this wonderful experience. I decided to go to VAIN after a friend recommended the salon. I called and made my appointment and explained what I wanted to do. (Bob haircut with ombre/balayage) I was paired up with Della and my appointment was set. Della took amazing care of me. She really listened to my concerns and was so personable. At other salons, I've felt that the stylist sort of makes their own decision for what your hair should look like, but at VAIN you can actually get what you want. Della explained exactly what she was doing as we went along, and my hair turned out just how I had pictured! I've definitely found my new hair stylist and salon from now on. read more

Initially, I was worried this salon might be too hip for me (or snobby) but they proved me wrong. I did some research on their website and saw their price range and decided to give them a shot. I called and requested one of their cheapest stylists who are good with curly/wavy hair. They matched me up with Misa, who is amazing! She listened to what I wanted and executed it well. They provide a shampoo with your cut and dry and style it simply for free at the end of your cut. They even provide a free touch-up trim within 4 weeks of your initial visit, which I use to get a bang trim. The reservation process is smooth and professional. They even provide a confirmation call the day before your appointment, which a nice personal touch. I'm getting great haircuts at a good value at Vain. I love VAIN. I love my hair! Vain is more than a salon, it is a community of artists who are encouraged to be their best creative selves. They are kind and helpful and most of all, talented. The stylists at Vain take ongoing education classes. They study all kinds of technique and theory, sometimes two or three times per month. You can tell that the people working there really love what they do, and if you can taste the love a chef puts into their cooking, then I think you can definitely see the love that is put into each appointment completed by a Vain stylist. I got to see the amazing Tara. I love my hair! She made the impossible possible. I have felt trapped by my dyed black locks for years. Once you go black with hair dye, it is really difficult to remove. Tara reassured me that we had lots of options and that she would help me choose the right one. We went through several processes including two protein treatments to condition my hair. At the end of the appointment I had beautiful, shiny, chocolate brown hair with deep copper highlights. I got the makeover I wanted!!! I love my hair! Tara was thorough and thoughtful in her work, and I felt like I was in good hands the entire time. She has an eye for what would look best and definitely took the time to think about my coloring, my style, and the the health of my hair. The front desk staff at Vain is super friendly too and I love shopping there. They have a super cute boutique and I always want to buy everything I see in there. Just had a great haircut from Ashlee, curl specialist. Price was totally reasonable and my hair looks GREAT. Got a proper dry cut, then wash and style after, which is surprisingly hard to find and also exactly what you need for curly hair. read more

I'm not big on reviews however, had I read a review warning me when looking for a new stylist, I wouldn't have made the choice I mistakenly made. I haven't had my hair cut in months given the state of things right now. That and the fact that after residing in Seattle for the past seven years, I have yet to find a good stylist. I just don't understand why it's so hard to get a good haircut. I have long layers with long bangs and fringe around my face. I showed Misa a few pictures of how I wanted my bangs cut and everyone featured long bangs. I even said I wear my bangs long. I walked out with extremely texturized bangs above the eyebrows, the absolute worst look. I just can't grasp how a stylist could look at several photos with long bangs and interpret that to cutting near baby bangs on me. It makes no sense. So if you're wanting to get bangs cut or already have bangs that need a trim, like myself, I caution you. I can at least can pull them back but I won't be wearing them down for at least a couple months. I paid $80 with tip to walk out of there with my bangs pulled back, which is the exact way I walked in. It's a major bummer. Needless to say I'm still in the market for a new stylist. read more

I was looking for a new hair place after moving to Seattle and came across VAIN that was recommended by my neighbor. I was able to get an appointment for hair color and hair cut pretty quickly. The whole experience was awesome. My hair stylist carefully examined my hair before suggesting any treatment and listened to all my concerns and wishes. As a result I got what I was looking for. The place is not cheap but it is worth paying for great service and my hair looks pretty and healthy. read more

Stella! Is! Amazing! I saw Stella a few weeks back for a haircut and was SO pleased. She listened to what I wanted, offered some great suggestions, made me laugh, played some Southern rap (think Outkast and Nellie) and I left with an amazing hair cut that needs hardly any styling. It just dries into place - the sign of a great cut. Vain offers a free three week trim/follow up. Personally, I think it's genius. My hair gets a freshen up and they, for the most part, have some repeat business. Case in point: I scheduled another appt. for a hair color a few days later. I'd been thinking of going red for a while, but didn't have the motivation or trust to go for it with some random stylist. In comes Stella.... (I'd also like to note they had a rad 90s indie rock station streaming on my second visit). Fast forward to this afternoon. I brought in pictures of my 'red head' inspirations and Stella took over. The final product - hot, hot, hot! And the music - amazing, dancey Cut Copy/Daft Punkish pandora. Can't say enough about this salon. Great customer service, talent and environment. read more

I miss Braedyn. And I'll be making the 20 minute trek to Zero Zero to see Bo after my experience today. I have been a long time customer here, and have a lot of respect for them having worked with the owners in a different capacity, so I'm leaving 3 stars as a cumulative sort of review. But today. Today was pretty bad. I tried a new stylist, who I won't name, because she knows who she is. She did absolutely no texturizing to my hair and managed to somehow remove all volume that my hair had from my cut. Everything was blunt edges. No layering does not mean no texturizing. And she blamed my dissatisfaction on styling and told me that I needed to go home and try to play with it on my own. I'm not a stylist. (Apparently she's not much of one either.) But I've never had a single stylist say to me that the way a haircut was achieved was by flat ironing or some sort of technique. That, to me, showed a lack of immaturity that I just have no time for. The haircut I had previously looked better the further out from styling you got. Bo, at Zero Zero, on the other hand, listens as you tell her what you're after, actually studies your hair, studies your photo, and works with you. Her haircuts are phenomenal, so if you're having trouble finding someone in West Seattle worth their cut, try a trek to the Hill. read more
