I went to VAIN for nearly 20 years, all 3 locations. I LOVED the West Seattle location. I live in Austin now and am coming back to my place in West Seattle for a week. I called to make an appointment for a partial foil and all over color and the receptionist wanted to book me for a 4 HOUR window. She also wanted a 50% down payment now on my credit card? When we looked for another day and she did not provide any solutions, she was clearly irritated with me. I have been professionally foiling, coloring, dying my hair since I was 12.....I have NEVER had a 4 HOUR service, and I don't need to be placated and described how a foil works.......LOLOLOL really? At some point I said i would find another solution and she said, "so you don't want the spot I offered you?" Before I could even say that I couldn't do a 4 hour commitment in the middle of the work day, she just hung up the phone on me. That will be THE LAST time I go to VAIN. That is NOT the salon I remember liking so much in the past. 4 hours for a partial foil? a 50% down payment on a hair service more than a week in advance? Rude front desk gal? Entitled, placating and willing to hang up on someone that is trying to figure out how to make it work to give them business? Not a good look. read more

Utterly bewildering and unprofessional conduct. While I almost never find myself posting negative reviews, I feel I have little choice in the face of the unprofessional contact displayed by VAIN. My partner was an regular and satisfied customer of VAIN for well over a year up until this last weekend, when after being out of town for several days, she received an email from VAIN's management informing her that they would no longer be offering her any services. This came as a complete shock, as it had been nearly a week since she last attended and she was not aware of any issues or problems; she had paid promptly and was satisfied with her haircut and the services provided. After requesting some sort of explanation, they indicated they would only speak with her; they then proceeded to send her an email refusing to divulge any details, only vaguely saying that "some interactions" had "made staff uncomfortable". Further requests for clarification were met with an additional email that said "some recent visits have been concerning" while still directly and outright refusing to provide any details or explanation. While I fully support the business's interest and right to protect their employees, this conduct is grossly unprofessional. We are still utterly mystified as to what infraction(s) were committed, let alone what was so egregious that it required a banning from the business (or why it was necessary to wait an entire week or apparent months before issuing the ban without any kind of warning if it was so egregious). Despite our attempts to respectfully request some kind of explanation, absolutely no clarification has been provided, nor was there any warning that there were concerns at any point prior to this. My partner would have been more than willing to apologize and make amends if anything was done (she has very much appreciated the staff for working with her), and was willing to respect the business's decision regardless, but the refusal to provide any sort of clarification or explanation despite our repeated pleas is beyond the pale and has left her in no shortage of anxiety and mental anguish. I sadly cannot recommend this business to anyone; any services they may provide are outweighed by the gross unprofessionalism on display here, as they apparently can and will ban you from the premises without explanation at any time. I will not be returning, and I hope the business reconsiders its poor communication methods. read more

I moved to West Seattle and my usual curly hair guy was booked until the new year--so I decided to try Vain. Charli stood out as someone who specifically does curly hair, and it made me feel ten times better to see they had curly hair themselves! Now, I already had to reschedule this appointment, so when I tell you I was late, so very late to my rescheduled appointment, you'll know the embarrassment I felt. I had a 12:45 but had written it down as 1:45 and despite so many reminders I never thought to check that I had the time right. So totally my fault. I got a call from Susan (?) who left a very nice message inquiring where I was. Despite being 5 minutes away, the market was still going strong and I ended up being at least 30 minutes late to my appointment. I was fully ready to be told to pack it up (nicely) but Charli decided to take me on and just mentioned I may need to sit under the dryer. This was more than I could have hoped for. They sat me down and asked about my hair and what I was looking for, and then started to do a dry cut. This, this, is when I know someone knows curly hair bc a dry cut is so essential to getting it right and making sure the curls turn out how you want them. They asked about my life and hobbies, and shared a little of themselves too. I also got to regale them with tales of my bad haircuts and they showed me their special expensive curly hair scissors which just low key made me happy. It shows they really care about their work! A wash and style, glass of wine, and little bit of time under the dryer had me out the door and super happy. I feel like Charli listened to me--they didn't take too much off, but just shaped up my curls and gave me my bangs back. I'm so obsessed and can't wait to make a better impression next time if they give me a chance. The vibes at Vain are inclusive--the person at the front desk was so kind, gave me a gentle and almost unnoticed correction on the stylists' pronouns (i noticed the second time and was so grateful for it), and the retail items (earrings! Stickers! Glasses!) are all things I've come in there to purchase before. If you're looking for a cool inclusive space that treats you well--please check out Vain. And if you're a curly haired girl like me, don't hesitate to find Charli when they are there on Sundays! read more

I did not have a good experience with this salon. The salon itself is unprofessional and unrefined. While my stylist provided a few good colors/highlights, she appeared to become complacent and started making some significant mistakes (e.g. one side of my hair blond, one side brown). While she "happily" fixed them (after I had to wait 5 days) she apparently bad-mouthed me to her team. That was disappointing after the relationship I thought I had built with her. In hindsight, I think it is the attitude of the salon and its owner that sets the aggressive and unprofessional tone for the people working there. For the prices they charge, you can get a much better experience elsewhere. I do not recommend this place. read more

Zoe cut my hair, she was friendly and on time. Oh the shampoo-ing was wonderful with massage and nails. My hair is long and super thick and somehow at the comb out there wasn't a single snag or tangle, she blamed an oil she used so of course I needed to get that. She looked at how my waves moved and adjusted her styling to match. She was thoughtful about the side bang and thinning I needed, then gave me a wonderful blow dry and styling. After receiving this horrible cut and sending the email below, they degenerated and bullied me rather than assist me in figuring out a solution or providing a styling tip or even offering a simple apology. I'm not a regular client at VAIN, however, I found myself in need of a last minute blow out for an event that unexpectedly came up for the next day. The place I normally go was booked up. Even though it said they didn't have availability on the Vagaro app, I called and they were able to get me in. I believe I saw Jaclyn (and I'm probably, totally, spelling that wrong). She was great! It was one of the best blow outs I've had. It looked lovely. She gave me subtle waves/curls (I have wavy/curly/frizzy thick hair) and it lasted almost a week! Sadly my experience with this salon is limited to scheduling the appointment, and ends there. It seems like they expect me to accommodate them for their convenience, and do not value my time. I scheduled an appointment with Peyton. I was asked to change my appointment time two different times. Both times I agreed although I was slightly annoyed the second time. On the day of the appointment, about two hours before my appointment, the salon texts me that Peyton is out today. I know life happens and people need to call out when they need to, but when I was already tossed around twice to work with their schedule, that just does it. I texted back right away telling them I will not be making any more attempts to reschedule. No response from the salon until the following day, apologizing and offering discount. Advice to the management: how about not take a day to respond to a client who is upset for being rescheduled three times. It could help in the future if you offer this discount when you reach out to the client to cancel/reschedule, and not offer it until your client/future client tells you they are upset. I probably would not have tried to reschedule any way, but I would have been left with a different (better) impression of the salon. read more

I've been searching for a new hair stylist since mine up and moved to Utah before Covid. I've been to a couple but hadn't found anyone yet that I really trusted to make any big moves on my hair. I had been to Vain eons ago at their downtown location for a blowout and they did a decent job so I thought I would give their WS location a try since it was in my hood. I was really glad that I did because JC did an amazing job and to be honest, I felt like I was sitting there chatting with my best friend the entire time, which lets face it, is definitely a huge bonus when you're going to get your hair cut. Who the hell likes to sit there in that awkward "first date" silence while your stylist is trying to read your mind? (which is also worse when you're wearing a mask!) The salon was clean and well put together. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of all the items they had for sale in the front, BUT, they appeared to be from local artists and things like that, so it's not like a huge deal. The cards on the wall were funny and gave me something to look at while I was waiting for JC to finish up with his previous client. The salon was nice and busy which is always good to see. JC listened to me while I told him my hair story, showed him pictures of what I had the last time my hair was cut and how I liked it, but how I wanted it modified. He was never pushy, and most of all, he made sure that he understood what I wanted. He did a wonderful job straightening my hair before cutting it with precision. He never cut anything without asking which was amazing and he asked if I wanted MORE cut, which was great. I was comfortable the entire time I was in his chair and that has been a feeling I have been searching for a long time! If you want to pay ridiculous amounts of money to get your hair as nice as it could look from another salon, then go to Vain. Okay listen, I'll start by giving a little background on my hair first. I've been getting my hair turned platinum blonde for about three years now. I've had long hair, short hair, and even an incident when I had a chemical haircut because of overlapped bleach. I had to grow it out for a year and got all that turned blonde again before I came to Sam at Vain West Seattle for a bleach & tone. If you're in & out of salons, you'll know stylists can be condescending, rough handed (I've been burned by so many hair dryers) and even kinda mean. So I guess I look for a lot when it comes to a salon & hair artist, but I expected more of the same before I met Sam. She was so nice, knew what she was doing, and she was honest when I asked if my hair could handle the damage. I went in with quarantine hair: 3 inches of roots showing, dry split ends, brassy color etc and came out with shiny beautiful hair with the exact coloring I wanted. It had been a few years since I'd had a salon cut, and just wanted something simple and low-maintenance. I have naturally wavy/curly mid-length hair, and wanted something that would liven up my waves and give me a volume boost. My stylist, Misa, was incredibly friendly and personable, and really listened to what I had in mind. She livened up my dry hair with great products and tips, and put in several layers to add volume and shape. Things did not go well. I'm not here to beat up on my stylist. He was a sweetheart and, besides the bangs and the back of my neck, he did really well with the cut. HAIRCUT: What happened to the bangs must have been a brutal slip of the wrist or maybe it was muscle memory while on cruise control. He used the guy clippers on the back of my neck, sometime new to me, and it stung; even now, 8 hours later, it's raised and it burns...will attach a photo of it if I can figure out how. COLOR: As for the color, I asked for balayage. I received a full head of foils. When I inquired if this was a different balayage technique, I was told everyone does it differently. Okay... so I was charged 140 for this "balayage". What? Best part... my hair looks exactly as it did BEFORE I walked into Vain. CUSTOMER SERVICE: This was the actual roller coaster of emotion. This is the first time I had ever complained about my hair. I resemble a 10 year old with uneven, shrunken bangs hovering above my eyebrows in a V formation. I spoke with staff before leaving, expressing my sadness. By the time I got home, I was steaming about paying $200 and called Vain. Spoke with the manager who ultimately refunded the haircut but not the overpriced balayage; she said the General Manager wouldn't allow it. Oh but they were willing to give me "clarifying shampoo" too -- not help me get the coloring I originally wanted and thought I could expect in exchange for $140, but some clarifying shampoo. When you're a high-end service provider you get to charge high-end prices, but you'd better make sure that in the event of a slip up, particularly a big one, you don't leave your customer footing the bill. It would have been easier to remedy the situation and keep me as a consistent client than it will be to find new clients. Nothing against the stylists here because most of them seem to be wonderful, and you're likely to have a good experience with them. But just be aware of how the situation will be managed if something goes wrong. read more

CURLY HAIRED LADIES BEWARE I am *still* recovering from a bad cut in July here, that I refer to as the "double-mullet." Because I'm new to town I don't yet have a go-to salon. VAIN had been recommended to me because their stylists specialize in curly locks. I had confirmed before I came that a dry cut wasn't required by this particular stylist but that she was a curls expert. I came armed with a picture of myself, 6 months prior, with the haircut I wanted us to replicate --basically a reshaping of what had grown out. This should have been easy, right? We also had an entire conversation about the fact that I have a heart shaped face and that I needed the width to be near my chin and neck, not ears, The stylist asked if she could please do a dry cut (which I had only done once before and hadn't had a good result) and after her reassurance that she knew where we were headed, she started cutting. I looked up from my phone 10 minutes later to discover that 1/2 of my hair had been cut as a shelf at ear length! (this would be mullet part 1). There was too much of it cut too short at this point to do much as the layers, which were almost too short . When she saw I was worried, she said "don't worry, once I finish shaping and wash it, it will be fine." Unfortunately, the "shaping" included mullet level 2, where she took the made the ends in the front, about 2-3 inches shorter than the back. I didn't notice this second issue until I headed home as she had at this point wet my hair and styled it curly. It wasn't until the next morning when I washed and styled it myself that I realized that I had a diamond shaped cut, with almost no weight at my shoulders. I certainly wasn't going back to have her try to fix it! After 10 weeks of letting it grow out, I was able to get back to my old stylist in SF who shook his head sadly and said "this is going to take at least 2 cycles to fix." We cut the back to at least match the length of the sides again, losing 3 inches all the way around (boo) and are still trying to fill in those long layers. Needless to say that VAIN is a 4 letter word in my book. Recommend taking your business elsewhere! read more

Years ago, I used to go here for color (I don't remember the stylist's name) and it was always gorgeous HOWEVER, I went for a simple trim from Misa on Saturday, and she absolutely butchered my hair. I asked for a trim with long layers. She started cutting from behind. And when she was done she had cut off 9 inches, thinned my hair without asking and cut choppy, uneven layers. She let me leave the salon with the back of my hair all crooked in the back because "she didn't want to upset me further". It was so bad my boyfriend noticed as soon as I got home Mel, the manager, said she couldn't fit me in to fix their stylists butcher job for over a week, so now I have to go to work with uneven hair and layers that don't match. I called during my vacation and talked with a happy receptionist. She asked me about my hair and what I was looking for, then offered two appointments the same day. Braeden was the stylist I met, and he did a fabulous job. He listened to what I wanted to do, plus he has the experience and backbone to share his knowledge and input regarding my goal. Plus, the cut was only $50! Wow! I have found my new stylist, and I'll be referring Vain out to anyone who asks me. Bonus: Parking is in the back of the building for free up to 3 hours. I asked for lilac balayage and provided several photos of what I was looking for. I was told they would "try their best" to get to my color of choice, but said "they couldn't guess" how my hair would react and said they would strive for a violet if my hair couldn't get light enough. I left the salon $220 poorer (not including tip for 2 workers), with the top half of my hair my natural hair color and the bottom half of my hair a very muddy red (it wasn't even balayage!). Please note that they did NOT tone my hair, leading to a redder/brassier look. Only after deciding to take matters into my own hands (bleaching, toning, and dying my hair myself at home) did I realize how painfully obvious it was to them that my ethnic, dark hair never would've turned lilac in one visit, and how I wish that they were more upfront with me about that. Hair professionals should have known better, but I feel that they weren't direct enough with me on what to expect because they wanted my business. They couldn't even give me anything close to a purple, which is what they promised. I wish I had never come here and wasted so much money for a hairstyle I didn't want. Folks with dark brown hair - do not bother with this salon if you are wanting to dye your hair a light color. You are better off doing the job yourself for so much cheaper. They did not give me balayage OR anywhere near the color I had asked because they overbooked themselves and rushed through my dye job. read more

I got choppy, unblended layers with a 9 inch gap between one layer and the next. I am so frustrated and sad that this happened with their "precision cutter". They refunded the cut and another stylist tried to fix it for free. I went in for a third time and pieces of hair were missed at the bottom with one inch length discrepancies in a few spots. I love coming to Vain. I have seen Jason and Angie, and I love them both. Most recently I had Angie do my hair for my wedding. It was simple and beautiful.
