Went to Vain to trim my hair, it had been 6 weeks and I wanted to get rid of split ends. I also had bangs that needed to be trimmed, they were taking over my face. Anyways, I thought I would support the new Vain location in W.Seattle. Well the stylist, Meagan, cut off about 2 inches, which is NOT A TRIM, that is a haircut.Which was much more than the 1 inch we agreed on. I explained that I wanted to grow my hair out long, and she responded "it is already long", thanks captain obvious, I wanted to grow it out even longer....Whatever, it will grow back. However, when she was drying my hair she burned my ear. OUCH. She was drying it with a round brush and my hair got caught and she just yanked the hair out of the brush. That chunk of hair looked crooked and damaged at the end of the blowout,(this combined with the BURNED EAR, had me asking myself if I had said something to offend the stylist). No one should be paying 45$ to have their ear burned and their hair yanked out of a brush. My bangs were a HOT mess. She trimmed almost an inch off my bangs and she parted my hair oddly so the bangs looked like a crustacean of hair laying on my forehead or a weird betty page/ winona ryder in Beetlejuice hybrid..yeah NOT CUTE. Im pretty sure a kid in my 3rd grade class rocked the same bangs back in '98 when they took scissors to their own hair...I paid 45$ for a haircut ( there was a nice and friendly guy giving away cupcakes from the SugarRushBaking Co. to all of us getting our hair cuts). What began as a trim for overgrown bangs turned into a 54$ waste. I say a waste because for the last 3 weeks I have had to wear my bangs clipped back like Reese Witherspoon in "Walk the Line" but with big hair. Today was the first day I was able to wear my bangs styled because they finally grew out past the weird Wynona Ryder in "Beetlejuice" phase. I will be sticking to my stylist Rachelle at Salon 08. Got +/- 10 inches chopped off my Peyton yesterday and it turned out great! I had a picture ready and she referenced it twice to make sure she knew what I was looking for. Plus they offer complimentary touchups 3 weeks after your cut. I've been lusting after their color jobs on Instagram for a while and will be taking that leap as soon as I can set aside some cash. After having two disastrous experiences at Vain downtown 8 or 9 years ago, I had sworn off the chain forever. But then I moved to West Seattle, and the options for getting an edgy haircut or having my hair re-blue'd (I've had royal-to-peacock blue highlights for the past 4 years) are few and far between. So I decided to give Vain another try, and I'm super glad I did. Both Janae and Della are friendly and fun to talk to; they've both have given me great cuts and know what works with my hair texture (dry cut, no razor). And since Vain has "funky" colors in stock, it's easy for me to get my beloved blue highlights done without any finagling or fuss with regard to sourcing color. Prices are at the higher end of reasonable (that is to say, more expensive than a barber shop and less expensive than Gene Juarez), but the location is so convenient that I don't mind. Finally, they carry my favorite Kevin Murphy hair care products -- so yay! The only thing they're missing is carrying my OTHER beloved, must-have hair stuff by Kerastase, but hey... no one's perfect. I'm just glad I gave Vain another chance! read more

Yeah....what a weird experience. I was there for a men's haircut and initially couldn't find the place because it's actually behind a shop that sells nick nacks. The lady started cutting my hair and stopped 1/4 of the way through to go help another person, and left me sitting there for 15-20 minutes without any indication that she was coming back. Someone then made a guest appearance to wash my hair, which was a pretty strange experience as well. The haircut took well over an hour even though i'm a guy with short hair. It really wasn't a good haircut and ended up costing me over $40. read more

Really bad cut and experience - stylist was very stubborn about wanting to cut my hair 'her' way instead of listening to me - cut turned out very bad, will have to have it re-cut in another week or so, and it was not cheap. Will not be going back and would not recommend to anyone. read more

I was really excited about trying this salon, but they canceled my cut and color only an hour before my scheduled appointment. Apparently the stylist went home sick, which I realize couldn't be helped, but at such a late hour you'd think they'd try to fit me in with someone else instead of flat out canceling. I'm normally okay with having to reschedule things, but I'm going out of town and now it's too late to get my hair cut before my trip. Pretty disappointing. read more

I searched on yelp to find a good place for perm, and then Vain with almost 5 starts rating grabbed my attention. However, after spending 4 hours in salon and $175 (before tip) on the perm, the result was rather disappointing. The hairstyle I got right after the treatment was okay. And I waited for more than 72 hours to shampoo because I was told so. My hair stunk in those 72 hours because of the treatment, but for the best result, I still waited even longer than I was told. However, the curl on my hair only last for a couple hours right after I shampoo, then it became straight, as my hair looked at before I had the treatment. It has been one month since I had the perm done, and only one of my friends noticed I had something done with my hair. I've done perm twice before in Asia and the result was great. Even after 8 months, my hair still held great curls. I cannot speak for other services of Vain, but if you are considering to get a perm at Vain, my advice is: DON'T! You will regret for the time and money you spend. read more

I have fine curly hair and Amelia was GENIUS! Best cut I've ever had. She really understands hair and the science behind it She's a great communicator- she even drew a picture of the cut she was envisioning for me. Not only that, but my new cut actually looked just like her drawing. Double thumbs up! Plus, Vain offers a free touch up cut within a month of cutting a short cut, which is appreciated. I went to VAIN for the first time last week for a haircut. Braeden was my stylist and did an amazing job. I have been getting constant compliments on my hair! He listened to exactly what I wanted, but also made some great suggestions. I have fine hair, so he added some layers that really helped boost my volume. Go see Emily Hartl. Just do it. I have sort of wavy/sort of curly hair, and I'm not one to blow dry and straighten on the regular. Emily is the only person I look forward to having cut my hair, because I know she won't mess it up. She always manages to give me an awesome cut that looks great when I leave my hair curly, but that won't look weird if I decide to straighten my hair for a night out. Also, she's a really wonderful and fun person, so sitting in the chair is never a bore. I live in San Francisco now, and often consider scheduling trips back just to get my hair cut. read more

I am not happy with the way that my hair turned out after going to Della. I came in to get my hair ombre dyed. I showed her pictures of the color I wanted and was very specific with the way I wanted it to look. I was SO excited because I had never dyed my hair before and wanted to look good for my birthday. After it was done, she spun my chair around and my heart sank. It literally did not change. There was no color difference when I held my ends up to my roots. I called and explained that the color wasn't right so Della fit me in to fix it. The second time around, she already had the dye pre-mixed and began the process as soon as I sat down. When she was done, she spun me around again and I STILL LOOKED THE SAME. It was barley lighter. My friends asked If my appointment got moved because my hair didn't look any different. At that point I wanted to get the hell away from VAIN salon and the $150+ I spent there and didn't even bother to go back try for the third time to get it right. Moral of the story: DO NOT waste your time here. read more

As a natural redhead who's color has faded as I got older it took awhile to find someone who could nail what my true color should be - but Sam did, and she's figured it out for a number of other redheads too. They have a super cool website that shows all of the stylists and their specialties so that you can pick the stylist for you... They also double check that the stylist is a match when you call to book. I haven't found many people who can cut long hair well and Braeden new exactly how to do it. YES! Finally, I got the haircut of my dreams. I had a flat, shapeless, boring mop of long hair and I brought in one picture of bangs.Tara is a hair goddess *bows*. I've never gotten a haircut where I truly felt I got exactly what I had in mind and I did today. Flow-y layers, PERFECT full bangs(not too short, not too long, not too thick, not too thin!) YEP. I have to say I do like my hair, but I haven't been treated so bad by a business before. The receptionist was incredibly rude and short with me and made me feel like I was in the wrong for asking to get my hair closer the the photos I brought in prior. She was incredibly unprofessional and made me feel uncomfortable. When I came in for my service, the hair stylist made me feel the same and we sat there in silence for two hours. Although I like my hair at the end, them making me feel so bad for coming back in was not worth it. I got my hair done a day earlier and they tried to charge me twice for a new service that was what I had asked for in the first place. Would have liked to see better customer service and general professionalism. read more

I'm pretty sure that I just got the best haircut that I've had in my whole life and I'm no spring chicken. I was a little nervous as I called fairly last minute and they said that a "jr. stylist" was available, but decided to take a chance and go for it. So so happy that I did!! I walked in just now.....I asked if they had someone to do a last minute blow out, just taking a chance but new they would probably be booked. I also mentioned I really wanted someone to do a really awesome blow out. Both of the keyboard tappers looked at me like I was asking the most ridiculous question in the world, they made me feel like the biggest fool in the world. This is the third time I've walked in asking for a last minute blow out and it was the third time that I was made to feel ridiculous. Each and every time I wasn't greeted with kindness, sincerity and positivity. A prospect/future client should be made to feel special and appreciated just like every other customer that walks in the door. I am baffled. I gave them three chances to help me out. It doesn't matter how talented and incredible a salon may be, if the receptionist is rude and unkind, they shouldn't be working at the front desk. Honestly, the person working up front is the most important position in the salon, they set the tone for the establishment and really do make the salon what it is. I went to Vain because they are supposed to be specialists in extreme color. I am Hispanic and I have very dark long hair. I have blonde peek-a-boos that needed to be touched up. I called ahead and explained the difficulty that I have lightening my hair. The nice gal on the phone suggested that I come in for a color match to make sure they can lighten it. I was impressed by this offer because no one had ever suggested this in the past. I drove all the way to West Seattle from South King Co. on a Sunday only to be told by Sam that a match wasn't necessary. She was so confident that they could get my hair light enough. She talked about Oliplex which is a new product that will allow your hair to take a little bit more abuse from the bleach. She told me that she would tell my stylist her recommendation for my hair and I would be all set when I came back later for my color. Needless to say my hair did not turn out blonde in fact it turned into a nasty bright orange color. Exactly the color I told them I was trying to avoid. The guy that colored my hair toned it so much that now it isn't even in the blonde family. It's more of a light brown/greenish color. Apparently this ridiculous new product was a crock. They told me that a 3rd step was necessary and sent me home with a tiny bottle of product that cost me another $30. $260 later I walked out of there disappointed and broke. I would not recommend this salon to anyone. My stylist did what he could but the frustrating thing is that they were so confident that they could lighten my hair but they couldn't. Don't go here unless you have money to burn and you don't care if they get it right. The chemicals in the toner burned my ears too. read more
