The true story of Olivia. One day I called a company I trusted which was Tony and Guy(still trust them). I got booked by a random person named Olivia. She told me she was getting a new job somewhere else. For the next cut she had given me her personal number even though Tony and Guy wasn't letting her do it she did it anyway. I met Olivia ONE time. Olivia was INTERVIEWING at a new salon and had me go to the new salon. Vain.... First of all you can look by the photos on instagram Olivia did not know how to cut a mullet she had no photos until she met me. #1- she didn't like the style I chose as a client which was definitely really layer more like a mullet and I TAUGHT HER WHERE to cut my hair. #2- She refuses to flat iron my hair because she thinks it's bad for my hair even after I requested it the entire cut- and my hair was crooked due to the fact it's wavy. So at Tony and guy she fixed the crooked but at Vain? No way she definitely did not create a good look my hair was crooked on one side. So I called the manager to get the hair fixed on one side. For some reason maybe I was too honest and nice? Not sure!! But they did not want to fix my hair. Here's how the facts go for Olivia 1- she lied to vain to get the job claiming I'm a client that's following her around even though I just met her 2- during my cut at vain Olivia said thank GOD you are helping me get my job here in this interview 3- refusal to flat iron my hair so we can make sure it's even on both sides. In fact she laughed like she's gonna do what she wants even if I flat iron my hair and it's healthy she want going to do it. 4- lack of styling knowledge sorry Olivia- and Vain- but Olivia didn't know how to dry bangs that are wavy. She did not at Tony and guy yet- she was struggling with my hair she kept them wavy and they were crooked. So she had done some research on how to do my hair by the time I came back and showed me a technique she JUST learned. I'm like her guinea pig at this point. She had no clue how to dry bangs that were curly like mine. I watched her struggle and not listen and my bangs were crooked. 5- look at her profile from before Vain well then I requested my mullet cut showing her exactly how to cut my hair FYI LOOK at my hair right now- I have cut it myself ever since Olivia. Sorry but I'm an extremely amazing artist and I can cut hair it's an art but it's not brain surgery it's actually extremely easy to cut hair. It's not hard and I cut my hair better than Olivia ever has and that's a FACT. 6- By the way- this entire time I have been TEXAS STYLE NICE and quiet just letting Olivia LIE to Vain acting like I'm a client that knew her but really she just told me she moved from Miami and needed a job. I don't know her - she did bad with my hair in 3 areas but whatever. 7- Uneven hair- so mostly my layers on both sides of the face were completely different. I'm pretty sure Tony and Guy(a better salon) would DISAPPROVE of what she did to my hair. But when I told Vain Salon I was uncomfortable with my haircut and by how uncomfortable with Olivia? They took Olivia's side who they only knew for a month for some reason. I lost sleep because I spent so many years letting people walk all over my kindness. They were rude and it was only because I told them the truth about Olivia. They all wanted me to shut up. So I did- because now Olivia who started cutting girls hairs like MINE AFTER I TAUGHT HER WHAT GIRLS IN AUSTIN WANT NOT Miami wild child long boring Florida girl hair. No I taught her Not to cut hair crooked How to cut curly bangs How to cut a mullet What girls want in Austin Flat iron is ok on hair Apparently I helped her get a job ALL OF THAT?! and mostly? I just needed my hair fixed on each side. But guess what I do it myself now you all act like layering in such a skill and the art in cutting hair but really it's in THE SERVICE. And the service from Olivia was so trashy. So I'm finally saying something because the emails I have from the owner? Were such rude responses I'm going to guess "Vain" owners that are NOT TEXAN are what's going on. I did nothing wrong but be wayyyy too nice to the owners and Olivia. Who lied to them to get a job and Olivia shut me up this long!!! She traumatized me. But I'm the artistic girl she sucked my fashion, my knowledge and my energy. Hunny your "talent" is something I can do in my sleep Olivia. Your job was to be nice and you failed at that. The end. read more

Was a customer at Vain from when the doors opened under the legendary Joey - then stayed on after with Jessie for years - but I'm done. Their new policy includes a LOT of pressure to pre-book many weeks ahead, which I finally did against my better judgement. Sure enough, I forget in the middle of a hellish week (after they sent an email that went to SPAM and a 10 second voicemail less than 24 hrs ahead) - and after being loyal for more than 14 years - they charge full price. Even after being willing to take another appointment right away - they wouldn't cut me any break on the fee and frankly were just kind of bitchy about it. Having not given me a waiver at time of booking or taken my card number - they just demanded I hand that info to them over the phone. Since I'm not a jerk - I gave it to them. I know that's the way of the world these days, and I'm sure they don't make as much off me - so no big loss for them...But Hell if I'm going to devote my business to a place for years and be treated like a number! read more

My hair stylist is Carrie Leigh and she is a hair genius! Seriously, I've been going to her for about five years. She's given me the best long layers, the best short post-breakup bob and the best balayage. She is a master colorist and multi talented working with both short and long hair. Plus, she's a total badass (former roller derby chick). I also love the location as it's convenient for me and there is always parking. Plus, the receptionist is great and they carry Bumble and Bumble products (and a few other brands). A bonus is seeing the owners bulldog. He likes his head scratched. :-) read more

I had a great experience as a new client at Vain. I chose to book with Olivia because I was looking for a stylist who isn't so focused on color services and prioritizes cutting technique. When I called for an appointment, the receptionist was great and even offered me a cancelation appointment for the same day. During my service I was surprised and grateful for a few small but significant details: Olivia took a lot of time with me before shampooing to discuss my lifestyle and help me choose the right cut for my hair type. I felt confident that she was using my hair as a guide and was really helping me succeed in managing it. As a not-tall person, I really appreciated the footstools at the shampoo stations. (I didn't feel like I was going to slide out of the chair!) Olivia was awesome in answering all of my questions about products and haircare, and she was meticulous with my cut and blow out. Pros: BOMB service! BOMB receptionist! BOMB hair stylist! Cons: Parking is a bit tight (adds to the charm, though) This place feels like home every time and it's as charming inside as it is from the outside! I have been going to Vain for almost 4 years, and I am beyond sad that I'll be moving away soon so I'll have to break up with my stylist. :( Rebekah seriously always makes my hair dreams come true, and I always walk away feeling my best self after a fresh cut. I have very fine and thin hair that is very flat. Regardless she always cuts my hair in a way that frames my face very well and can still be styled in various ways even though I like to keep my hair short (like above my shoulder short). Bekah is very bubbly so it's always fun to talk about life with her! I knew it was the start of a great relationship when we bonded about traveling and SF. The salon is so CUTE AND COZY! Vanessa is always very welcoming at check-in and check-out. I love that they offer beverages like tea, wine or water during your visit because it just adds that charm. I always feel like I am at a girlfriends house getting my hair did. The only itty bitty minor thing is parking is very tight but I have always been able to find a spot without any issues. I picked this place because it is so close to my apartment. A true hidden gem. I got a hydro facial and lash tint with Ashley and now I am addicted. Ashley is so nice and great at what she does. I loved every second of my hydro facial treatment and she talked me through every process which I appreciated. Her room is clean and nice, the entire experience was very relaxing. Worth every penny. I've lived in Austin for 7 years now. I must have drawn the luckiest card ever because after doing a little Yelp research I booked my first Austin haircut at Vain with Emily. I would never allow anyone else to touch my hair. I have very thick hair, and after one haircut with Emily, I learned for the first time what it was like to have manageable hair. Dare I say it, even sometimes after an air dry. As long as Emily is in Austin, I'll continue to see her. As an aside, she's also very entertaining. 1 hr with her goes so quickly. read more

OH MY GOD. You know that they don't ever tell you when there is going to be a loud thunder and one of your cats is just going to completely lose it? I can't even. I'm sorry. Hi! I have previous experience having gone to this salon (Vain, it is called) and did get my hair re-imagined by Victoria and she has always been a true Visionary. This time around I brought in one of my books of exotic birds as a point of reference and Victoria was able to conjure an excellent coloring idea for me very quickly! Someone actually verbally inquired earlier as to whether or not my mother had mated with a parrot (she totally didn't, BTW). Mission accomplished!! As you may also be well aware, getting one's hair colored can take a bit of time and involves sitting. Victoria not only allowed me to speak with her during this time but recommended to me an excellent film called "Nightcrawler". I took her recommendation and saw it and was blown away. The star of the film, Maggie Gyllenhaal (in her most transformative role EVER. I sense an Oscar!) reminded me very much of myself 6 months from now, except I will still have better hair. I wanted to treat myself to a brand new hairstyle and switch it up this year. I really wanted a change. Low and behold, I found Vain which is half a mile away from my house. I went in with some ideas of how I wanted more layers, something that would grow out beautifully. I was fortunate enough to have Crystal work on my hair, and she was very honest about what would and wouldn't work on my hair length, and the fact that I wanted to grow it out. So she gave me a haircut that was almost identical to what I ideally wanted, but something that works for my type of hair. Crystal talks to you, she is very good at what she does (she said she has been taking clients since she was 19), but she makes you feel comfortable. I know that stylists have to make "small talk" sometimes, but I didn't feel like that at all. It was very easy and fun to talk to her. The salon brand she used for my hair was Kevin Murphy Angel wash shampoo and conditioner, which to me smells like coconuts and the beach. As well as KM beach spray, and demo'd the KM dry shampoo (which I left with). I could not have been happier with my hair cut, and I really applaud Crystal for making me really love my hair again. For a ladies cut with a blow-dry (which is included) was $70 excluding the tip. A little pricey yes, but for the experience and results, it was well worth it. For the travel size of the KM dry shampoo was $10, and it smells divine! read more

I got my cut done by Joey Miller! Enough said right... So yeah she's amazing! I came in with two ideas one basic one bold! I had kinda been persuaded not to do the bold one...(friends family ext.) I showed Joey both and she said the bold which I was was excited about! I got a awesome massage while my hair was washed and great conversation. That truly made feel welcomed! After my amazing cut was done she gave me some great tips.. This lovely little converted home on the East side is sleek-looking and modern on the outside, and invitingly chic inside with its aqua walls and dark wooden accents. Patrons are offered coffee or water (or if the sun has properly reached over the yardarm, some wine) before their color or cut - they recently started getting way delicious coffee so that rules. Penny is a brilliant hairdresser (she cut my hair in my profile pic) who works with your hair's texture and thinks about how a cut will grow out. She's sweet and thoughtful and like most of the staff there, likes her clients to communicate visually (as in, bring pics of locks you love) and wants to give you a great haircut. The single most traumatic thing about packing up and moving clear across the country is saying goodbye to that group of close friends that feels like family. And for any gal who "enhances" her own natural hair color her hometown hair salon is that family. It's kind of like having your very own "Cheers" bar -- where everyone knows your name and you have a personal relationship with your stylist. Menfolk -- FYI beautiful hair does take time, any gal with a luscious multi-dimensional mane is logging 3-4 hours at the salon every 6 weeks. It's a bonding experience. You owe your continuing loveliness to your stylist -- and you and she have a deeply personal relationship. You know all about everyone in her crazy family (I mean you Cindy at Studio 291 in Newtonville, MA!) and she knows those magic color formulas that make you look better than fabulous. Naively, upon arrival in Austin, TX many months ago I turned to an inferior community review site and ended up in stylist chair that turned out to be a reserved seat on the slow train to hair hell. Never again! What I learned was that anyone can sling around a magic color palette but without the dedicated and focused commitment to a truly artistic application of color each and every time, you can end up looking like a streaky haired hoochie. So after a few sub-par color applications I found myself staring back in the mirror at a streaky haired hoochie. Let me tell you girls, I am one usually one tough cookie but my hoochie hair broke me town. I'm talking tears. Yelp saved my hair. Yelp and SARA at VAIN. Based largely on the witty, snappy raving review written by Ashely A. I went to Sara at Vain and she fixed me up better than new. She sympathized, she understood, she felt my pain. I know several people who have their hair done here regularly and are very happy with their stylists and their hair. In fact, these people have some of the best haircuts of all the people i know. However. I am not hip, i am not original in my appearance or particularly unique in my personal style. And that's the rub. I should know better than to go to a salon cooler than me to get my hair done because then my hair's cooler than me, getting invited to better parties, asked out, having its picture taken. All the while little old me is nothing but a life support system for my hair. In total, if you are sitting in a salon packed with stylists, everyone of them attending to their respective patrons, and can sing "One of these things is not like the other, one of these things is not the same" and it's YOU you're singing about, go to a different salon. read more

Having just moved here from San Francisco and unsure of whom to trust with my fair hairs, I found Joey and Vain had gotten high praise on Yelp, usually a solid indicator of quality. Joey cut my hair well the first time, but as I went in tonight for a bang trim, I was told my appointment was LAST night and that do I mind rescheduling? For a bang trim? That takes 5 minutes? The receptionist also informed me I had been called with a reminder about this appointment. I had not. The receptionist conferred with Joey and came back to ask if I could wait 45 minutes. For a bang trim? That takes 5 minutes? The answer was NO. This is lame customer service (especially considering Joey is the salon owner and likely interested in the success of her business). I'm a firm believer in customer service being just as important as quality of product, whether in a salon, a restaurant or anywhere else. That said, I'm going to find a new salon. I won't even mention the fact that she was going to charge me $15, when my lovely stylist in San Francisco would always do it for free. After reading the reviews here, my expectations were quite high, perhaps a little too high? Pros: My stylist was very cool, and we had a great time chatting. I got a parking spot right out in front. Cons: I walked in and there was no one at the front desk. Someone came in after me, and the receptionist walked into the room and helped her first, even though I was waiting at the desk. Maybe she was a regular?? Who knows... I wasn't offered anything, not even water, to drink. It was over 90 out that day, and I've never been to a salon that hasn't even offered water to its clients. I know it sounds nitpicky, but when you're paying over $65 for a haircut you expect a certain level of service. The verdict: My haircut looks okay. I don't love it, but I have very high standards due to the fact my last stylist was a magical miracle worker, so I'm not holding it against the stylist. Trying to figure out where to get my hair cut is actually how I came across yelp. Went to Joey at vain because of all the raving reviews just on her, and I'm glad I did. Joey is the first person to cut my hair that wasn't all that shocked at how thick it is--which was a relief b/c I think that's the root of my so-so haircut problems. I told her that I'm not too picky, I'd really just rather her do what she thought would look good since she's the pro. So while her cute and nice apprentice Rachael washed my hair, Joey found some pics in magazines and actually showed me what she was thinking about first (I was impressed already). She thinned out my hair incredibly; I swear she must have cut off a pound of hair. Anyways, what was kind of amusing and cool was while she was still mostly cutting the bulk out of it, she said she was going to try something else to show me because that's what my hair really wanted to do and it would be so "sassy". Pretty much the result was incredible because she brought out the waviness in my hair, which has never been done and now I have a slightly longer that I was going for but incredibly different (for me) and sexy hair (although if I sleep with it wet I have some crazy punk-rocker hair). I liked Joey and her apprentice a lot. What cracked me up though was Joey said, "you know, even if somebody wanted your haircut, they couldn't. And that's what so cool about it." A personally tailored haircut for significantly under $100... Yes please! One more thing, I don't really know yet if it will be a "perfect grow-out" as someone said, but Joey told me I could let it grow out for up to four months and it should still look awesome. Made me think the people that say to get it cut ever 6-8 weeks are just hurting for business. I will definitely be back! Update: Sent my boyfriend to see Sara. I think it was his first haircut since I met him three years ago that actually looked good right after it was cut. Sent my sister to see Esther while she was in town, and she cut it shorter than my sister wanted, but I thought it looked good. Very Bad Experience! Went to SARA to get a trio cut, color, and highlights. A preschooler could have done the same job on the hair cut. My roots were very obvious when I left and the highlights were completely undetectable. I have been to many different salons for color and NEVER been so dissappointed. When I politely called and explained that I was not satisfied on my drive home she was VERY defensive, erraticly emotional and angry...then she refused to fix her botched job, lambasted me and suggested that I was trying to get free services. I went to Vain after reading the raving reviews here on Yelp, and while I didn't have an awful experience, I think I will continue looking for a hairstylist, or perhaps simply make the trip back to San Antonio where I usually get my hair done. First off, I had a bit of trouble finding the place--I hadn't known that if I pass this salon--even by a block, I would wind up in a rather sketchy part of the neighborhood. It was quite clear I was lost, as nearly all on-lookers were staring at me, giving me looks to emphasize that I didn't belong there. When I arrived at the salon, I had no trouble finding a parking space, though the salon was dark, kinda grungy and punk--and I like that whole 80s punk rock scene--from a safe distance. I'll be honest, I'm a prissy girly-girl--definitely more pop princess than punk princess. I was kinda hoping for a more spa-esque atmosphere. The music was fun, the decor was cute--but when I get my hair done, I am really wanting someplace to rejuvenate and recharge my energy. Nothing wrong with this place, simply not my style. I had Sarah cut my hair--she was friendly, very laid-back and casual, and to my own fault maybe I wasn't bossy enough with what I wanted done to my hair, but usually I like to have the stylist have a bit of freedom, since they usually know better than I do what suits my hair. I felt she cut it a bit too short. I told her I just wanted to shape it up a bit, but she took off some considerable length. It wasn't enough for me to go "OMG!" or anything, but the hair length was never supposed to go above my natural hair line on the back of my neck. Additionally I wasn't really informed on how I should style my hair differently with this cut she gave me, so I am eagerly awaiting the weeks that pass by in order for it to grow out a bit to its ideal length. In short, this place isn't bad, but it isn't what I am looking for in a salon. And for $150 plus tip for cut and color, I guess that is reasonable--but if I am dropping that much, it better be the whole package. read more

I had been going to another salon called Orbit, but when I went to make an appointment, I heard that "we were no longer able to keep working with" my stylist. Hmm. It leaves me wondering what he did and what happened. However, it seemed a good time to switch. While I liked his color work, he was insanely expensive, and I felt like he didn't quite get what I wanted. He tried to convince me to spend time on my hair each morning. I am sooo not a morning person. I'm not sure I'd even remember to brush my teeth in the morning if it hadn't been instilled in me by means of stern discipline at a young age. I can't imagine doing more than running a brush through my hair in the morning (if that). 10 seconds flat. He also was trying to convince me to get extensions which is sooo not me. So, after reading the reviews on yelp, I figured I'd give Vain a try. I looked at the website for Vain, and based on the pictures, I chose Mark. Mark is great. He gave me a fabulous cut that I don't have to think about and is flattering to my face. We talked about urban sprawl and design. Even better, I got free wine. And I don't have to fuss at my hair. Update: I went back and Mark gave me a fabulous assymetrical bob which I adore. but when I went back for a trim, it seems he has gone back to working at wet. Don't say 'infinitely' when you mean 'very'; otherwise you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite." Not that this place isn't deserving of praise, because it is. But, ask anyone about the salon they go to and OMG THEIR HAIRSTYLIST IS THE BEST OMG! So I mean, usually, you get a biased opinion because OMG! This place, though, is solid. It looks just like your run of the mill trendy joint. The stylists are all "cool" with flashy hairstyles and cigarrette jeans. They serve you wine or beer on entry into the building, which ummmmm yeah.........is awesome. So the first time I went in to get my hairs cut, I sit down to read a magazine waiting for my stylist. I am confronted by drunk client 2007. 3 sheets to the wind and on her cell phone with her nail lady. It was pretty classic. But all of this is beside the point. Buffy, my stylist, did exactly what I wanted her to do. I think even if I didn't know what I wanted, I would have left there with a great haircut. The aesthetics of the place are very warm and welcoming. It's a small salon so everyone is all close and cozy. What makes this better than Joe Blow's Super Swanky Salon down the street? The gist of the ethics curriculum is that the students will often feel very good about themselves after a yoga program and want to transfer that good feeling to you, when it's not necessarily you but the yoga itself that helped to engender those feelings for the students. As such, it's your responsibility to not take advantage of that and to guide them to a point in recognizing that they're helping themselves, and we as yoga teachers are effectively just guiding them. I have what is not a traditional haircut / is an aggressive haircut. I've gone through many stylists in Chicago but never found one that I could just click with. They'd do something, and it'd take me a couple weeks before I'd feel okay (which is to say, any haircut they've given me, I would have outgrown in two weeks and have forgotten I got a horrible haircut two weeks prior). When I moved to Austin, I went to a couple salons to no great fanfare. After some research, I stumbled upon Vain and called them up and was told that Blanca was available. Not looking forward to another bad haircut, I asked some pointed questions over the phone; in so many words, whether she actually knew her stuff or not. She was game with the whole thing. She was awesome, funny, super powers, etc. She basically sat me down and told me "What's up gangsta." I proceeded to give her a convoluted explanation of what I wanted and rambled for five minutes about feelings and power of emotions. Her super secret power is in being able to translate aforementioned poor desire into something coherent and beautiful. When she was done, I immediately loved my haircut. Then, I looked at her in the mirror while looking at my haircut, and the love for my haircut was transferred over to Blanca. At which point, I'm sure if somebody asked if I genuinely loved Blanca, I would have responded in the affirmative. In short, she's amazing. Actually, I don't think I can do any justice in words to describe how good she and Vain are. They're orders of magnitude better than what I've seen before. I get constant comments about my hair and always refer them to Blanca, and the people who have taken me up on my recommendation have always expressed how great they felt regarding the haircut. So yeah, I'm basically in love with Blanca, and you should be too. read more

One word: VICTORIA I had my hair cut yesterday by Victoria in her new VAIN surroundings and don't have enough space to write how happy I am! She never fails to surprise me with how absolutely amazing my hair looks every time I leave her chair. Jessie Jennings did a great job helping me modify my first wig. She is familiar with both real hair and synthetic wigs and offered many helpful tips for care, styling and products to use. She thinned my wig and cut it to the style I wanted -- not so generic and creating a more whimsical, edgy look. When my hair grows out, I intend to return to have her cut a pixie for me. I should probably start by saying that I'm pretty picky about my hair. I've had enough disasters brought upon well-meaning stylists to be very loyal to the ones who execute something along the lines of what we discuss before they get started. That being said, I hadn't had a chance to see my stylist before moving to Austin. It'd been a couple of months since I'd gotten anything touched up. When I came to see Crystal, my hair was a mess! It was too dry, too frizzy, and way too blonde. She was great about listening to what I wanted (any style that includes the fits the description of "long layers," "natural," and "low-maintenance") and asking what I would and wouldn't be willing to try before she got started. Crystal left me with the most beautiful, natural-looking color. I really couldn't (and can't) stop looking at it. My hair is almost black, so highlights are necessary to make sure that I don't look sickly. For the first time, it looks like I have natural highlights. I can't stress this enough. For once, it doesn't look like someone dipped random parts of my hair in bleach and called it a day. (Nothing wrong with that and I love you former stylists, but I have seen the light. No pun intended.) She took me back to a dark brown, but kept some of the blonde at the tips. I don't even know how she did it. I don't want to be overdramatic and say it's magic, but, it kind of is. Let me start off with with saying that I have super thick Asian hair and have had horrible haircuts because stylists could not figure out how to tackle all of it. This was definitely not the case for Joey she tamed my thick mane and then some. Because of her my hair has been transformed from thick and blah to light and edgy. Joey definitely knows her craft and she knows it well. She looks at hair with an artistic eye and cuts and styles your hair so that it flatters your bone structure. So if your looking for someone who knows thick hair and can give you haircut that will show off your features then Joey is the stylist for you. Thank the hair gods for Joey because she is truly blessed with talent. I'm so happy that I found her. She is my new hair partner in crime. read more

I followed Victoria from her former salon and my hair would follow her to the ends of the earth for a style and a chat. Victoria is bar none the best stylist I've ever worked with and magic seems to happen every time I slip into her chair. From highlights, to extensions, to the first "short" hair cut I've had in over a decade its all been fantastic. She always listens to the look I'm going for, offers suggestions on how to achieve it, and in some cases offers some invaluable honesty about what just won't work with my hair type-which we all need from time to time. I am writing a review for Sabrina. Over the past 7 years I have followed her across town to different salons and spas. No one in town does a better facial- She is amazing. From the moment you meet her you know you are in the presence of a kind and genuine individual who has a passion for what she does. I have sent many friends from near and far and they all love her...my mom even gets excited to see her when she comes down from Seattle. I am always skeptical when I try a new salon but according to fellow yelpers, this is the hot spot. So with my old stylist going M.I.A. and the need of a post-break-up hairdo over, I tried it out and was so very pleased! (...sigh of relief) I called on a Tuesday and had an appointment set the very next day with Crystal. 8+ inches and two hours later I was pleased as pie... lots of hair and lots of thinning, takes lots of time sister! I appreciated her attention to detail and even though I was itching with anticipation to get out of her chair, I breathed patiently and waited for her to say done! And once she did, I was amazed at the job she did by taking my long locks to a short sleek bob. I have found my new girl! Besides the hair styling capabilities, I was so amazed by the spirit in the shop. Crystal filled me in on all the shops gossip, as any good stylist should! And we laughed and whispered among our shelves but I also loved how everyone talked to everyone else, unlike many places I have been where stylist talk to one another but really don't let you in their conversation. I didn't feel that here, it felt very open and very close and the same time. The price wasn't too out of this world, less than I've paid in the past. I paid $65 for my cut and with such a drastic change; I would say every penny was worth it! read more

If you need your hair colored, do yourself a favor and make an appointment with Lindsey. She has "the eye." A close girlfriend recommended her, and that girlfriend of mine is PICK-EEY. Being haircolor-challenged, I decided a year and a half ago that I wanted to punk out a bit. I work a corporate job from home, which means I can look however I want for 3 months, and then for a week here or there every quarter, I need the total corporate-whore look. What to do?! Lindsey had answers. Not only did she talk me out of straight-up blue on black for my thick Asian hair, she explained why going for a more purpley look would complement my complexion to make me look less washed-out than blue would, she edumacated me every step of the way as to what she was doing with bleach, etc. so I'd feel comfortable. (I was subjected to hair trauma by my mom, as a child.) The end result was skillfully hidden--I had "corporate" bangs, which I could flip over to reveal the purple after hours! Annnd...back again. Perfect! The last time Lindsey colored my hair, she did some bits in blue, and sure enough, though I'd wanted Wonder Woman hair all my time, SHE was right: the purpley hues were much more complementary to my complexion. I ended up going out after hours with work people once when I had quarterly meetings, and one woman glimpsed a bit of purple in bright sunlight. She loved it, and so did everyone else who saw. Several aunts (whom I *thought* were conservative) even raved about my hair at a reunion! Lindsey also gave me hair care tips and recommended what products to use for keeping my color in for as long as possible. Vain's ambience is great - it's located on the East Coast just south of MLK near downtown in a cute house with brightly painted rooms. Droopy or stressed? Don't worry - they'll offer you coffee or wine! Joey the owner is a dee-light - shes often there and will walk by and comment your hair, just as the other friendly stylists may. Much better than my single visits to Pink and Wet...I just didn't get that feeling there. Now that I'm broker than 2007, I've gone back to black, but Lindsey will do my hair until the piggy bank is empty and I resort to Fiskars. Uh...not. read more

Bottom line: Vain rocks. I've been known to research hair salons for weeks, letting my hair get (a bit) scraggly while searching for a stylist that I could trust. After we relocated here from NYC, I was in a bit of a bind looking for a place. Until I found Yelp, which led me to Vain. Thanks, Yelpers! Joey is freaking amazing. It's like I'm sitting down with a friend, having a glass of wine, and voila! An hour later I'm like, "Whoa!" Sometimes I forget I'm having my hair cut. The vibe is pretty relaxed and fun.
