I'm always hesitant when trying to find a tailor after a debacle a few years ago using a dry cleaner to hem my pants. I literally had developed a phobia of tailors. A few years ago, I found a fantastic tailor in the Princeton area. She was really expensive, charging the same price to hem jeans that NYC denim specialty shops charge (Denim Therapy) but she did good work so I was ok with paying through the nose. Fast forward and I'm now in Bergen County and making the trek down there isn't feasible. So I found Vaccaro's through StyleForum.net and gave them a shot after calling another tailor in Nutley whose prices were also much higher. Here's where it gets interesting and all comes together. A. Charlie is a great guy - sweet man, cares about what you want and is still involved with his business. B. His work is fantastic. C. His prices are MORE than reasonable. To compare, I paid $20 to have a pair of pants hemmed and tapered. My Princeton tailor charged me about $80. I had a sweater vest taken in at the waist and I paid almost 3x as much at the other place. Need a suit tailored? I would have saved about $100 going to Charlie. I am a true believer in you get what you pay for so I'm usually hesitant when there are significant price differences. I actually had a chat with Charlie about this and he just doesn't believe in ripping people off. Just had a pair of my husband's pants tailored here - brought it in on Thursday, and it was ready by Sat. (although I didn't get a chance to pick it up until Wed.). This place is one of the few legit tailoring places around. This is their specialty, they are experts. I had a pair of designer jeans hemmed there, and requested to have the original cuffs put back on, they did a great job. From my previous reviews, you can see I'm picky about my tailoring. Sorry to break the streak of five star reviews but I had a negative experience. Last summer, I took a bridesmaids dress for tailoring here that was ordered entirely too big from the manufacturer. I gave it to these guys because everyone said they were the best in town. When I went to pick up the item and try it on, it was still too big, but the tailor pressured me into accepting his alterations saying that he knew best even though I said I wasn't happy with the fit. Took the dress home and showed my friends and family and they all said I definitely couldn't wear it like that in the wedding so ended up paying another tailor almost $100 to do additional alterations and fix what I asked Vacaros to do in the first place. I'm actually not upset about the fact that additional changes needed to be made, that's the nature of tailoring and alterations, I'm upset that he didn't listen to me. I'm the customer and I should tell you what I'm happy with. I was swimming in that dress! read more

Simply put, Charlie is outstanding. The service is great, the people are friendly, but more importantly, the work is incredible. I've had suits, pants, sport coats and shirts all done at Vaccaro's. I'm 6'4" and 180lb, so everything is too big off the rack in order to be long/tall enough. Charlie fixes it all. My wife, 5'1" and petite, has everything run too big and Charlie makes it custom fit. Worst service ever! Simply put, Charlie is nasty and arrogant! He gave me more than a hard time when I asked him to fix a pair of jeans that they messed up the first try hemming one leg an inch shorter than the other! He said to me "time is money", "I'm the only tailor in the area", "I don't need this aggravation at my age", "if u don't like the way I fix it this time go find another tailor", then proceeded to mumble a few curse words under his breathe in Italian all because I asked him to fix their mistake. Since their are few tailors in this immediate area he knows that and doesn't care how he speaks to people because he knows most will still come back. NOT ME! He then went to the back room that is only a few feet away from the counter and started to talk about me to the women tailors in the back and they started laughing. One of them peeked herself around the wall to see who he was talking about as they all carried on in conversation about me in Italian making me feel extremely uncomfortable! Charlie is hands down the best tailor in area! We live in north jersey but work in the city so we have access to great tailors in NYC but Charlie's level of detail and quality always exceeds our expectations. Charlie has been my husband and dads go to for few years now but in recent times, we needed Charlie to fully alter my then fiance's his Hugo Boss wedding tuxedo (jacket and the pants) as well as rehearsal dinner suit to really give it that tailored look. Charlie had a lot of work cut out for him as my husband has broad shoulders and a small waist so he required expert craftsmanship and Charlie nailed it! Charlie also doesn't just hem the pants in length, he ensures the leg fits properly and takes in areas even if its less than an inch, his expert eye and attention to detail is outstanding. My husband was nervous because this was an expensive and owned suit not rented and with our wedding less than 4 weeks away, you can understand the pre-wedding jitters.
