Then the hostess took 10 mins per party to seat everyone, I'm not sure what was taking so long but it was ridiculous! We couldn't talk or really hear each other so lunch was basically a bust for us. The rooftop at Utopian Tailgate is one my favorite places to view the city. I've never had a bad time there especially when there's other events in the city going on. There are plenty of outdoor games to play with new people and a variety of creative drinks to choose from. The music is great, the servers are quick to assist you, and always offer many options. Beautiful, playful, fun space! Highly recommend if you're in your 20s...would tell you to pack ear plugs if you're in your 30s and don't show if you're older than that. This place is loaded with frat stars and teenie boppers but once your ears adjust to the pounding music, it's pretty fun. It took us three times to finally get a reservation which is for two hours. Looks like they take walk ins buttttt they didn't our first two tries. Reservations are a little stressful because you have to put a cc down but they are flexible for your party to arrive piece meal. Drinks are fun and since I'm pregnant, I was happy with the NA beer options they had. Nachos and curds were good as well. Cool lights and fun games! My friends and I went here and we enjoyed the lights and drinks! Drinks were good and had definitely enough alcohol. Unfortunately, we only stayed inside, but walked around outside. I wish we went outside instead because it seemed to be popping, but now I know for next time. The place was a bit pricey, so be prepared to spend a little bit. The service was also a bit slow, which was annoying because it took us a while to order and get our drinks. Before entering, I had to have my bag searched and then got wanded by a security guard. While he was polite and professional, I wondered what kind of clientele they get that requires such a measure. I was there for a group event and for mixed drinks we were offered two options: Drink #1: Lemonade (no alcohol), and Drink #2: vodka-soda. My conversation with the bartender went something like this: Me: "I'm not a fan of plain soda water, could I get the vodka with Coke instead?" Bartender: "No, I can't do that." Me: "But the alcohol is the same. It's just a different button on the soda gun when you top off the drink." Bartender: "I understand that sir, but that is not part of the package that your group paid for." Me, shaking my head in disbelief: "Well then, can I have the lemonade (Drink #1) with vodka (from Drink #2), then?" Bartender: "No, that's not one of the two drinks you pre-paid." So yeah....I understand why bars are sticklers about alcohol, that's where they make their money, but to give me grief over my choice of MIXER!? Either this bar's management is so strict with their bartenders that they're afraid of getting in trouble for substituting one carbonated mixer for another; or this place hires bartenders who have absolutely no concept of customer service. The rooftop bar is open-air with a nice view, but with the next-level snobbishness combined with TSA-style security, I have a feeling that they've positioned this place as a trendy, "you-should-be-so-lucky-we-let-you-in-here" vibe. I really wanted to give this place a 5/5, but honestly with how hard it is to get a reservation, and how stressful it is to have to give a credit card, and depend on weather, its sort of a stressful experience to begin with. For my birthday trip to Chicago this was one of my top choices because I had seen tons of friends post all over instagram about being here -- and it looked so fun! I'm a sucker for a good theme, bright colors, fun drinks and a good instagram photo opp. 4 days before my trip to Chicago I was looking in to making reservations and already it was packed and only had availability at odd times. I decided to wait and try to grab a reservation closer to when we knew more of our schedule. I met a friend who lives locally and I was able to get an inside reservation for 12noon on Saturday. The whole point of this place is the outside, so I am still bummed I wasn't able to be out there to enjoy the atmosphere. That being said, the inside was still fun and we enjoyed our brunch, cocktails and conversation, even with the loud music. I love the theme of this place and the service was great. My Avo Toast was delish and my friends loved their Benedicts. We tried the GameDay Mule, Lip Service and the HotBox, all were fun and yummy. Utopian Tailgate is the type of place to go when you want a lively experience. I loved the Florida Man shot (bourbon, passion fruit, and lemon juice). The prices for most drinks are not too crazy (in comparison to other rooftop bars in Chicago). Walk in's are welcome, but it can be challenging to get a spot outside when they are busy. This place was on the roof top of a building. You walk in on the first floor, security meets you to make sure you don't have weapons and a host to make sure you have reservations. Then you can get on the elevator to go up. Great adult atmosphere until the gnats started attacking everyone. Not sure why they came out in full force but it caused us to leave earlier than we expected to. The food was also mediocre. The best thing we had was the fried ribs. They were amazing. The menu was not updated fully so the nachos had chicken on it instead of the beef it said it had on it. The nachos had wilted lettuce on it. Needless to say, we sent the nachos back. We got the hamburger and chicken sliders. The sliders were messy and were not separated. It's like they took the buns out of the pack attached, laid the bottom part down and put all the ingredients on it and then laid the top buns on top. We had to cut up our sandwiches which made it even messier. Our waitress was hard to find. She would disappear for long periods of time and we had to ask where she was or have someone look for her. I've been here twice in the past two months and both times were pretty fun. Ambiance: Colorful, flowery, and looks like a fun time - even in the middle of the pandemic. Lots of lounge areas, tables, bar seating, and picnic tables to sit at. Make sure you make a reservation! They've also been more open to taking pictures as long you wear the mask walking around and the person taking your picture has their mask on. You can't walk to different tables but at least you can get an aesthetic shot. Service: I don't remember either of our servers names but our last waitress, tall with curly hair on 8/1, was great. She was able to switch us from two tables with a connect 4 board in between to two tables in the middle so both parties could see each other and get a picture "together." She was also very nice and helpful when ordering. Food: The first time I ordered Cheese Curds which were pretty good but a small portion. Second time around I had the Insane Grilled Cheese; I'd recommend it if you're looking for something filling but not too heavy! Other hits at the table were Traveling Tacos, Bacon Wrapped Dates, and the Breakfast Burrito. Drinks: That Tiki Drink is not big even though it says it is. It's mostly just filled with ice in a big cup. I prefer the Banana Hammock I ordered the second visit. It's in a fancy 'styrofoam' cup and is strong. My friends said the French Mimosa is strong too, and can't go wrong with the Key Lime Pie shot! I would recommend coming here before summertime Chi is over! Went here on a Wednesday night and was extremely underwhelmed. First off they make you stand in like to get checked by security before going in. Thought it was a little odd for a restaurant. The guard literally goes through your bag, makes you dump out any water bottles and waves a wand around your body. Felt like I was at TSA in the airport. But don't worry the security guard let all his friends through without checking them... Food was overpriced and not great. I got the sausage and peppers sandwich for $16 and it didn't even come with fries. Should have just gone to Portillos! Just got beer so I can't comment on their drinks. Drinks were tasty Cons: Private events take over on Thursday and it's going to be hectic if you go on a weekend as well. Just expect a wait. I went to utopian on a Tuesday night after volley ball. I would give the ambiance a 4.5 because the roof top area is cute, spacious and has fun games! The reason why I am giving it such a low rating is because I ordered a standard Chicago hot dog at the bar and when I went to pick it up it was bare. This is totally fine, easy fix right? Nope. One of the bartenders and a MANAGER actually argued with me that the standard hot dog comes with nothing on it so it was my mistake. I guess none of them bothered to learn their own menu?? If you are looking for a total instagram worthy spot filled with fraternity bros and sorority girls- this is the spot. I can here when it first opened. We stood in line downstairs waiting to be let into the elevator even tho we had reservations. It took about 40 mins to finally be able to go upstairs. The place is huge no doubt about that. It has countless areas to sit, play beer bong, rage cage, corn hole toss and more. Ultimately, I felt like I was in college again attending one of the fraternity parties or socials with my sorority. It took forever for a waitress to come take our order so our group just went up to the bar directly to order. In this place, if you are a girl it's a disadvantage because the bartenders will only help the men first before they take your order. The pricing for the drinks and food were definitely pricey and should have not been for the unmemorable drinks and service. If you want to play any of the games you have to give your ID and then wait on a list to be able to get the next beer bong table or bags for the bag toss. Finally, my group left after an hour because it took forever to get food/drinks and overly drunk people were spilling their drinks and bumping into everyone. The view from here is great. I opted for the Little Red Corvette drink - their take of a frozen strawberry margarita drink with a little strawberry whip on top. Our bartender for the evening was Ian and he made sure we had great drinks in a relaxed and casual environment. He was helpful in making suggestions and when we asked at 920 if we could still order a bite or if the kitchen closed, he politely told us it would be no problem to take our order as the kitchen didn't close until 10. We ordered fish tacos and a steak quesadilla. While we were waiting, a Vegas Bomb was quite the refresher. We sat at a table with a fantastic view and enjoyed a slight breeze as we waited for our food. I was a little disappointed that 10 minutes after ordering security came by and told us we had to move inside in 15-minutes. Did not understand this as I thought outdoor area was open until 11. I never would have ordered food had I known I was going to feel like I was being rushed inside - albeit politely. We got our food 10 minutes later and were mid-meal/mid-bite - literally - when security came back and told us we had to go inside - then! The servers were closing up the games and putting them away- which was fine with me. I finished my bite and we left the place. I really felt security could have been a little more accommodating given that we had been ordering most of the evening and at least let us stay out until 10 or until we finished our food - whichever came first. It didn't ruin the evening - but kind of left a bad impression after having been so overwhelming impressed. This place was a ton of fun, we came here a few before a second city show. Really like how cute and fun this place is! You have to be seated otherwise there is standing area for a bar area and a bar outside. The patio is massive and they have heaters but definitely cold out there. I was very excited to finally snag a reservation here because I've heard SO much about it and wanted to enjoy the gorgeous rooftop views. When you walk in, you go through security that is almost TSA level. It was a little awkward but I'm glad that they have security in place to ensure patron safety. You take the elevator up to the rooftop, and you enter Utopia. The view from the roof was GORGEOUS. Amazing skyline view. I went on a morning that was sunny and blazing. They don't really provide any areas for shade on the rooftop, so I was forced to sit and marinate in my sweat the entire time I was there, and it made it a little less enjoyable. I was not a big fan of their menu, and I was disappointed that they don't have any brunch options. The drink selection is pretty limited and I think the food is as well. Not a lot to choose from. We had planned to stay and drink for the entire duration of our allotted time, but we didn't want to after struggling to find something on the menu that we would like. After getting one drink and taking maybe three bites of my food, we decided to go elsewhere with a menu that would be better suited for us. I did enjoy the options for entertainment on the rooftop. We ordered the giant party punch bowl and between the three of us we almost drank all of it. We also ordered the nachos and chili fries. Both items were huge portions and fed us completely. The rooftop has amazing views. There's also tables for beer pong and corn hole up there. The staff was super friendly and catered to our every need. The Nashville donut sandwich is yummy, but any 1,000 other Chicago restaurants can give you a tastier version of a pretty basic dish. Came here to meet with a friend on Saturday for brunch. My first impression was the space is so cute! Once I got there, we got a free round of shots for it being my friend's birthday. I thought that was really sweet! So the impression at first was good. Weak drinks: by the time I was halfway through my drink, it was mostly water. Barely felt like there was much alcohol in there and it was just so so - nothing to write home about. Obviously only ordered one and didn't go back for more. Small food/lack of meat and content: one girl ordered the avocado toast, we ordered nachos to share, and we ordered the chicken sandwich. The avocado toast barely had any avocado on it - I mean just enough to cover the surface of the bread. When you're paying for avocado toast, I expect a LAYER of avocado...it was pretty sad looking. The nachos we literally had to look for the meat. Not sure if it was buried or what. The chicken sandwich was really good! But pretty small for the price (the same size as my $1.99 cheeseburger from Burger King). The curly fries were good and plentiful but I feel like that should be a given. Absent server: it was pretty empty when we got there, but did pick up the longer we were there. I think she was spread pretty thin and covering a lot of tables?
