When I'm in Queens I usually just get my bagels from a grocery store, but I think I found my new go to place with Utopia Bagel. The baker's dozen (13 bagels) is worth it because you can choose between regular and specialty bagels and it still comes out to $24. And if you get the dozen on a Wednesday, you can actually get 16 bagels! The bagels are big, and airy. The combinations and variety of options go on and on. Excited to be try a new one every time. They are pretty precise with the weight of spread you order, as well. We ordered the egg salad, tuna salad, and scallion cream cheese spread. The egg salad and tuna salad were mild in flavor, not heavy, tasted healthy. I've only come on weekends, so there is always a line out the door, but there are many staff members, so the line moves. If you are ordering a lot of bagels, be prepared for back-up options because although they are constantly making the bagels on the premise, popular options do run out and you may have to wait 15min for a new batch. read more

The bagels at Utopia Bagels are definitely worth the hype and deserving of their reputation as one of the best bagel shops in the five boroughs. My everything bagel had a near-perfect balance between a crisp exterior and a satisfyingly chewy interior. That reputation means Utopia is likely to be busy no matter the day or time. I went around 11 am on a Wednesday, and there were about 10-15 people ahead of me. Between ordering and actually getting my bagel (and it was just a toasted bagel with cream cheese, not an egg sandwich or anything), it took about 15 minutes. That being said, are the bagels at Utopia worth making a special trip for? Not really, for me personally. While Utopia may technically be the best, there are enough bagel shops around Queens that come close enough that I don't see myself going out of my way to visit very often. Utopia has recently opened a few locations in Manhattan and Long Island City, so it's easier than ever to give them a try without coming out to Whitestone. read more

Utopia bagels has lackluster customer service. I waited 10 minutes for someone to pay attention to me so they could take my order. I even tried to get the attention of the cashier who just walked away after taking a police officer's order. Everyone else was just waiting for their order already. They have an order here sign but no staff member was there. I got an everything bagel with scallion cream cheese and it was good, not amazing. They have outdoor seating, no indoor seating. Whenever taking a red-eye into JFK, this is the detour I make when driving the rest of the way home. I've been to a lot of bagel stores, absolutely have a few fine ones here in the Hudson Valley, and often check out bagel shops when traveling around the state or country, but Utopia in Whitestone is my favorite. Go on a Wednesday to get the 5 star experience. Any other day you get a baker's dozen for the price of 12 bagels but on Wednesday, 16!! And these are classically good New York bagels; nice chew on outside and soft (but not too soft) inside. I got the 16 bagels for home and a BEC (if you have to ask what this is, then you are not a New Yorker) on sesame and rainbow with cream cheese for the drive. All were as it should be. It is getting hard to find classic good bagels similar to how it is hard to find classic good pizzas. I just wish I did not have to drive all the way to Whitestone to find them. read more

My stepdad loves the mini bialys from Utopia. Seems that everyone loves the bagels here, so I went. I needed to deliver 2 dozen of these morsels to some friends that somewhat recently relocated upstate. They miss good bagels....and were beyond happy with said delivery. I picked up another dozen to share with neighbors and throw a few in my freezer. I wolfed down two (one sesame and one egg) during my drive north and I'm not ashamed to admit that I could have shoved a third one down my pie hole. I ate the egg one plain and then decided to pull over at the Plattekill rest stop to throw a schmear of veggie cream cheese on the sesame. Yes. These bagels are damned good. I hit the Whitestone location at a good time; the line wasn't too bad and they have a big crew behind the counter that really hustles. Great, friendly service. I'm now known as the bagel sherpa around here, so I'm quite sure I'll be schlepping a few dozen north the next time I'm "downstate". read more

Terrific hand rolled bagels have a nice crunchy exterior and soft inside. They are great with any of the many cream cheese options. Can't go wrong with an everything bagel and scallion cream cheese. Coffee was surprisingly good too. The service was friendly and helpful and there was plenty of seating out front if you want to eat there. My only disappointment was the baked salmon salad which was absolutely inedible and tasted nothing like kippered salmon. After being disappointed with the lox bagel at the most popular Russ & Daughter the last time we were in NY, I wanted to give it another try and had couple new bagel shops to try this time. What a store and friendly staff. Mr. Todd was very helpful in helping me get things to try. Why 4 stars? Because I'm glad I got to try them, but was it really worth it? --- --- --- It was my last day in New York and I wanted one more bagel. But once I told my wife and my mom back home in Houston that I was going to a famous bagel shop, I quickly went from ordering one bagel, to ordering nine bagels and stuffing eight in my suitcase. I ordered a mini everything with salmon to eat right away, and it was solid. But the rest of the bagels took a nice, long airplane ride back to Texas before they were consumed. To be honest, I'm not sure these bagels are tangibly different than any bagels I might find near my house. So while I'm tempted to go 3-stars here, I do appreciate that Utopia has such a wide variety of not only bagels, but schmears. Had I not been looking at a 3 hour flight home, I absolutely would have loved to try more of those delightful combinations, but I just didn't think the schmears would hold up on a semi cross country venture. But I don't want to ding them too much because everything looked pretty awesome on the other side of the glass, so I'm sure if I lived nearby, my experience would be a lot different. Ordered cream cheese & lox bagel with toppings based on it being an available item to choose on their site. But when I picked up the order, the receipt had a note about how it "shouldn't be that hard to say the worth it". Amazing bagels and sandwiches! You come in and order. Wait for your food and then pick more bagels to bring home and then pay. Had the Lex which was super refreshing with the Lox mustard onions, however the peppers were hot, would probably go for the Worth it next time. Then had the cheech and this was amazing! My goodness. For someone who has celiac , finding a good gluten free bagel is near impossible but Utopia bagels gave me the opportunity to have what is close to a regular bagel. I had to get both a toasted GF bagel with butter and a toasted GF bagel with peanut butter and jelly which was the best decision I made that day as they were just as expected. I'm nut from the area but when I'm back I will 100% be stopping by again. The only downside is the wait but it's well worth it. They have to be mixing, rolling & baking those bagels in the wee hours of the night to get that many fresh bagels made before opening at 5:00am. They have the full range of popular bagels from everything, sesame, poppy seed, cinnamon raisin, pumpernickel, egg to you name it. They even have some specialty bagels like jalapeno cheddar, asiago & rainbow. Of course, my favorite flavor is onion with a schmear of cream cheese. On this recent visit, I stopped in the day before to place an order for 2 dozen assorted bagels for the office to be picked up early the next day. I wanted to take advantage of the Wednesday Bagel Special of buy 3 get 1 free. Their pastries are normally buy 3 get 1 free, but applies to bagels only on Wednesday, which is good deal. But when I cruise in at 6am, they lost my order. Not to worry though because they have plenty of all the bagels I wanted and they packed up a fresh order in a couple of minutes. And since I bought 2 dozen, they threw in 2 additional bagels to complete the baker's dozen. There is NYC pay metered parking on Utopia Pkwy in the front (9am-7pm) and free customer parking in the back and the side streets if you don't mind walking a few extra steps to save money. If you come early to pick up breakfast or on a Sunday, park wherever you like for free (except at the hydrant, where it'll cost you $115). Oh, and as I was walking out after placing my order, I saw a family sitting at the tables on the sidewalk with a big pizza box emblazoned with Utopia Bagels on it. This place was popping on a Monday morning. I've been to this location before and they were recently featured on Instagram, but the quality of their food has never gone down even with their popularity, recognition, and franchising to a Midtown location. You could literally see how the magic happens as their process for making bagels is completely open to the consumers. We brought this to our 2-Year-Old niece who lives in Rochester and she went to town and thoroughly enjoyed these bagels. Utopia Bagels is an artisanal bagelry that opened in the Whitestone neighborhood of Queens, New York in 1981. It was founded by business partners Scott Spellman and Anthony Pantaleo. The two worked in the bagel business for years, learning the ins and outs of the industry. Eventually they decided to open their own bagelry. Spellman and Pantaleo's goal was to create a store that not only sold bagels but provided a friendly, family-like experience. What sets Utopia apart from other bagel shops is that they individually hand-roll each bagel, kettle boil them, and then bake them in their 1947 carousel oven. This old world process is what gives their bagels their distinctive flavor. In 2013, Utopia expanded when they took over the storefront next door. Today, Spellman's son Jesse plays a huge role in the business too. A second location opened in Midtown Manhattan in 2024, and a third will open in Long Island City in 2025. My family and I visited Utopia Bagels for breakfast this past summer. I first heard about them from a social media post. I was impressed when I saw that their artisanal approach to making their bagel dough was similar to how some pizzerias make their dough, or how some craft breweries brew their beer. I knew that I HAD to try their bagels. The place was hopping during our visit, and the aroma of freshly baked bagels was intoxicating.
