I had a very poor experience trying to cash a USPS money order for only $100. My father gave it to me as a gift (he is not up with technology like Venmo) and trying to cash it at this location was terrible. Upon giving the teller the check she looked it up and down (checking for validity) but that wasn't enough. She then proceeded to get a manager from the back to call the 1-800 number to see if it's real (I'm starting to think this has something to do with me and not the money order). The manager came back 10 minutes later and whispered in her ear "its okay, go ahead." I'm sure she doesn't call the 1-800 number every time they get a money order. The teller then gives the check to another teller (older black lady) who mumbles "I don't know why she gave me this I don't have any money", she already had a attitude for no reason (NOTE: I am black so this has nothing to do with race). She then opened her drawer and gave me a $100 bill. I politely asked "Do you guys have 20s ? Can you check the other drawers?" She then answers while rolling her eyes "LOOK I gave you what I have, all I have to do is give you $100". She answered in such a hostile voice I took great offense. I don't understand why the employees become aggressive with me because they don't want to take cash from their drawers. NOTE: This was the second USPS I drove to because the first one didn't have any cash in their drawers. . . -_- I guess I need to teach my father how to use Venmo. read more

You guys have secure cushy jobs and should be grateful for them but you certainly don't act like it. I wish there were negative reviews. I usually use the self service kiosk, which is fine. But I had a mind blowing experience this week. I foolishly thought that I could print labels for packages on line and schedule a pick up of the packages with my regular delivery. How naive. Nobody came to pick up the packages by 5:00 pm, so I scheduled a delivery for the next day. Everyone deserves a second chance. Not only did no one show up on day 2, USPS actually sent me an email confirming the nonexistent pick up from the day before. Of course nobody answers the phone if you try to call the post office. After the automated response, if you pick an option it just rings until an actual buzzer goes off!! There is no obvious way to reach a person on line. No wonder these guys are struggling. The saddest part is they really don't care at all about any of these reviews or customer feedback. read more

I've used a PO Box several times in my life. I dreaded getting packages because i would have to wait in line because when they dont fit in the box. I love the lockers they use for large packages. I can go there at 10pm, open my PO Box and inside I'll find a locker key I go open the locker and get my stuff. I also dreaded getting stamps, because i rarely use them and dont want a book. If i need 1 or 2 stamps i can use the self service kiosk. I've seen people weighting large packages on that machine too. I'm all about self service. I like to be in and out. I dont want to deal with people unless i have to. This place exceeded my expectations. Once i had to wait on a long line when i had 3 packages delivered at the same time. I'm usually very impatient and dont like to wait on lines, but this one moved fairly quickly. the only problem i had was when i was issued the box no one told me the PO Box had a different zip code than the street address. I got my VA license and all my bills set up with the wrong zip. I have been using this PO for over a year. I have all my mail and packages delivered to my PO Box and have not lost a single item. read more

Picking up an insured package can be nerve-racking. Once, they couldn't find it, and the clerk said that I should just sign for it anyway and that once they found it, they would deliver it. No, seriously, he actually said that. Also, I used to rent a PO box here, and mail appeared to be sorted to PO boxes completely at random. read more

Package was scanned as "delivered" but was never delivered. Package was recorded as "refused" which is not possible because there was nobody at home at the time of recorded delivery. The package was also not required to have a signature so it should have been left by the indoor mailbox area of the apartment complex. I called this branch because it is assigned to my building and I experienced the absolute worst customer service. When I called the first time, a woman named Amy answers, and puts me on hold for 15 minutes before I hang up and call again. Second time around, Amy once again puts me on hold for another 20 minutes. My neighbors have also had similar issues of never receiving packages. When you order packages, please order from FexEx or something. Because USPS will never get your package to you. read more

This was my first visit to this Post Office location. I arrive with no customers in line. The young lady was sitting down ( appears to have an injury to her arm) and I can't even rate customer service because there was none. How this P.O. can remain open with the same personnel and consistent low ratings is amazing. I was returning a pkg that was lost by the Post Office ( even tho they left an online notification for the vendor and me that the pkg was delivered to an "individual"). I was home all day on the date of the delivery and am the only person living at my address, so not sure who they delivered the package to. A week later (after I filed a claim) the package was delivered to a Hub box in my complex. By this time I had received a replacement and was attempting to send back the original pkg. Altho the pkg had approx 3 large staples in the top, the original seal did not appear to have been broken/opened. I was asked ( no less than 3 times) if i had opened the pkg and answered "No" each time, stating that the pang had been delivered to me from the P.O. in that condition...again appeared to be unopened. To avoid a long discourse I simply stated the instructions I had been provided to return the pkg and left the very unfriendly environment. If it was opened or damaged prior to them delivering it to me, it would seem that they should have noted it on the pkg. This is why my visits to the P.O. have become so rare. read more

The "main" Alexandria post office...they take incompetence to a whole new level.  By far the worst out of anywhere I have lived. Good luck getting them to actually answer the phone if you call - I have had to go there in person for things that could have been resolved over the phone because it is so hard to actually get them to pick up or help you if they actually do.  Most recently, I called because of a package delivery error - I had called the 1-800 USPS line, but they told me I needed to call the Wythe post office directly.  Guy actually picked up on about the 15th ring, took the info, said he was going to investigate...and never came back.  I was on hold for 25 mins. when I gave up and called back and you guessed it...now nobody will pick up the phone.   Carriers are also a joke.  I routinely get mail misdelivered for random people who don't even have a similar address.  Last week I found a lovely postcard addressed to someone several streets away in the middle of my lawn. I always send these items back out but apparently others don't do the same (or the carriers don't do anything with them when they're sent back out) because there are cards and packages that I've learned have been sent to me that I've never received.  Packages requiring signature (which senders pay extra for) have at times just been left, another time after signing the delivery attempt card it took a full week until the package actually was delivered, and then only after chasing the carrier down the street and asking him about it. Things like temporary mail stops and package pick up that can be arranged through the USPS website are a bad idea - they will completely ignore the dates you've selected and stop/restart mail on their own schedule, for example. I had an outgoing holiday package for which I scheduled a pick up online and selected the "knock" option rather than leaving the package out in plain view on the porch all day. That afternoon, I heard the mail come through the slot but the carrier never knocked to pick up the package. I went chasing him down the street with the box, and he said "oh, well you didn't have the package out." Once I got a stack of multiple neighbors' OUTGOING mail piled up in my mailbox.   Ridiculousness. You would think some supervisor somewhere would appreciate being made aware of these things for accountability purposes, but I haven't been able to find anyone who cares and it is so frustrating that I have stopped even trying to complain and just try to use them as little as possible. read more

I have lived all over the U.S. and never had anything bad to say about the U.S. Postal Service -- until I moved to Alexandria, Virginia. Except for one woman in the Del Ray post office, the majority of post masters and carriers in the Old Town-Del Ray area are a blend of useless and unpleasant. After talking with several neighbors, I quickly learned I was not the only one who a) consistently received incorrect mail b) did not receive mail c) or was condescended to. Perhaps Alexandria should close some of their locations -- or at least get rid of the Little Napoleons who wield little power, but make others miserable by simply having to drop off or pick up mail. read more

Awful. I accidentally picked up a "Priority Mail Express" envelope instead of just the "Priority Mail" 2 day or something like that. The envelopes look very similar. The woman working told me I had to get a different envelope and pay $6.95 for priority mail Envelope- I already had a pre paid priority mail shipping label though. Priority mail envelopes are free with the pre paid lables. So I shouldn't have to pay $6.95. I said -I don't understand I've never had this problem before.- However she was rude and said I have to buy the other envelope in order to ship this package then gave me attitude and said -you can speak to the supervisor- Supervisor came out and corrected the situation but both of them were very rude to me about it. So i changed my envelope, she shipped my package, and then she said "you go" as she flicked my reciept at me. read more

I am visiting from another state. I looked online for a post office. Choose not to go to the one on Wythe Street due to all the bad reviews. Instead, planned to go to the one by the Courthouse. Got in the Lyft and while talking to the driver, he asked why I wasn't going to this one. I told him about the negative reviews. He said the one on Wythe was just three minutes from my location and that he recommended me going to that one. I, again, told him.."but, 99% of the reviews are BAD". He recommended again that I try this one and that it would be ok. By that time, we were in front of the post office. I, reluctantly, went in. There were 3 people waiting at a machine that I think applies the postage for you. I went to the left and saw 2 postal workers at opposite ends of the counter and about 6 people waiting in line. There was merchandise and available packaging and boxes throughout. I looked at several different options, boxes, envelopes, padded envelopes, cardboard envelopes, etc. I was pleasantly pleased. 3 people in line before me and 2 of the staff were each helping customers. A few short minutes, the male at the end called "next". He was so pleasant and helped me through the maze. I could tell he wasn't real pleased to be there but I don't know that it had anything to do with having to work on a Saturday...and it didn't affect his ability and kindness in helping me...especially because I didn't seem to be able to hear him very well and kept getting his instructions wrong. It may not matter or make a difference to anyone, but I try to always say a quick prayer of blessing for everyone I may come in contact with for that day/week and to not let my personal issues or theirs affect my reason for being there. If you have a new build property (such as Potomac Yard) don't expect to have your mail box installed for two weeks much less have your address recognized in the USPS system for a month after you close (which means no forwarding address and no package delivery). The staff a this post office are a piece of work. I had to call repeatedly for updates on both getting the keys to the new mail box and about getting the address entered into the system. I eventually had to stalk the mailbox installation guy on a Saturday - who installed the boxes a week later than promised - and demand keys immediately. At the same time I asked when I could start receiving mail and was told the following Monday. Over that weekend I went online to verify the address on USPS's website and found no record and therefore mail would not be delivered at the address the following Monday. So I called the post office that Monday to ask about this and was told the address would be entered that day and would be recognized in the USPS system within one week. That week and came and went and the address was still not showing up in the system. I called the following Tuesday (Monday was a Federal holiday) only to find out that apparently there is only one person in the entire post office at this location that can enter addresses into the system (no back-fill staff???) and she was on vacation the previous week so it just didn't get done. Now I've been speaking to the supervisor every time I call so why did she lie to me the previous week? Anyway, I was told the person was back in the office and it would be done that day and would show up in 2-3 business days online. Obviously mistrusting of this information since these people are experts in lying and talking in circles I called again today to verify the address was entered yesterday and was conveniently told the supervisor was "in the field." Which makes no sense. And again, ushered off the phone with a promise the supervisor will call me back. LOL, I won't hold my breath. There are at least 10 new residences in this development that have been without mail delivery services since late September. This is just nuts and totally unacceptable. And the worst part about it is there is literally nothing anyone can do about it. read more

Had a very unpleasant experience with "Don" at the Wythe Street Post Office. While waiting in line for me to pick up a package, he signaled for me to move to the counter, just to be greeted by his hand. He held his hand up like a stop sign and told me to back away as he was helping someone (who had been at the end of the counter filling out paperwork). He either thinks he's 1. a policeman directing traffic or 2. a pre-school teacher playing red-light green light. Either way, it came across as very disrespectful and his following comments were no more courteous. His behavior is far lower than the national standard. If I wasn't in a position where i must pick up mail at that Post Office, I would change locations. read more

I try to be understanding. I really do. Sometimes this post office provides pleasant, efficient service, but too often, it does not. A roughly 50% success rate is just not good enough. Sometimes the self-service package drop is locked, with no explanation. On one trip, the self-service kiosk wouldn't accept any credit cards. In my most recent visit, I waited in the line just to get my customs form, so that I could get back in line and fill it out. Annoying, but no biggie. When I got to the front the second time, to mail the package, I was told that my large envelope was not a large envelope. I asked what about it didn't meet the description of the large envelope that I had reviewed online before packaging the item. Was it the thickness? The flexibility? (I bended it back and forth while we were talking.) I even brought my packaging materials with me, so that I could repackage it if necessary. But that was pointless. The only thing the clerk did was repeat that it was not a large envelope and pick up a regular, letter-sized brown envelope as an example. So I ended up paying twice as much as I thought I would have, based on the description on the USPS website, and I left in a bad mood, hoping I will not have to mail any packages again soon. read more

While in town for a brief family visit, I used this branch to ship a package as a favor to a Peace Corps Volunteer I work with overseas. I had trouble finding the exact shipping supplies but ultimately found some that sufficed. Otherwise I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of service and general mood-- even the customers were all very nice and polite. The location is easily accessible, with ample parking. The facilities were sufficiently neat and clean. To save me extra money on packing supplies for a box that turned out to be too big, the agent (unprompted) offered to cut down the box size to fit the contents. She offered me tape to seal the box but I had already used one off the shelf because past experience told me the workers don't share their supplies because they (understandably) prefer customers purchase items from the retail 'store.' Unlike some other locations I frequent, she did not quote me the most expensive rate; from our small talk, I think she was able to ascertain that the contents were more sentimental than valuable, and there was no rush on delivery. Better retail store would warrant five stars. Wish 4 1/2 were an option. read more
