Ok, so this is my first 5 star rating, but it is really more of a 4.5. I like the this place a lot, but like almost anything in this world, it is not perfect. That being said, it is delicious, a good value, and is one place that definitely delivers on the spice.
US Thai is your typical, hole in the wall place that serves great food. It is busy, and if you order takeout, you may get a weird answering machine telling you that there is a significant delay. The portions are pretty good, but not great, but it is still pretty cheap. Also, they do not serve alcohol, but I do not really care about that. This is one place that I will typically take a girl out to on a second or third date. If she is the type of girl I want to date, she will probably like it. If not, then it was not meant to be and she can find some other schmuck on Tinder to take her out to some bourgie, overpriced small plates restaurant.
On to the food. The food here is spicy, so be wary if you are sensitive. They used to divide their spice ratings into mild, mild+, medium, medium+, hot, and Thai hot, but I guess that got too complicated for the cooks. Now, they do mild, medium, hot and Thai hot. I was always a fan of medium+, so now I get medium and a side of ground chili peppers so that I can add the desired kick. I should also mention that I have a pretty good tolerance to spicy food and that medium will be too hot for most people. The waitress will also let you know how spicy the food is.
When I eat here, I typically get the Paneng curry or the Pad See Lew. I have also gotten the coconut milk soup so I will review that as well.
The Paneng curry is excellent here. This is a red curry that comes with your choice of beef, chicken, pork or seafood. I always get beef. As for the spice, I get this dish medium and ask for a side of ground chili peppers. As mentioned earlier, even medium will be too spicy for most people, so be considerate of your company. Or don't be, if you feel like stuffing yourself. It costs around $9.00 and comes with rice so this is an excellent value. The beef quality is good, and the vegetables are exceptionally fresh. It is like you can taste nature. The curry has a rich and complex flavor and you can tell that the curry paste was made from scratch and not from a box. All in all, this dish gets 4.5 stars out of 5. If they doubled the portion size, I would give it 5 stars, but it is still enough for at least two meals. This is my favorite dish at this establishment.
The Pad See Lew is pretty good here. This is a noodle dish, that comes with your choice of beef, chicken, pork or seafood. I get either chicken or beef. As for the spice, I order this mild, because I do not believe that Pad See Lew should be spicy. It costs around $9.00 and is a good value. The beef quality is good and so is the chicken. This dish is served with broccoli and some green onions and you can taste the freshness. The black bean sauce is pretty good, but just a little bit too sweet for my taste. I am splitting hairs though. There is just the right amount of oil on the flat noodles for that perfect balance of satiety, without too much greasiness. All in all, this dish gets 4 stars. You can get two meals out of an order.
I was not really into the coconut milk soup. It was too sweet for me and every slurp made me want to ask the waitress if Metformin was on the menu. That being said, I have never ordered coconut milk soup, so I am not really sure how it is supposed to be prepared. Thus, I am giving this dish an uniformed 2 out of 5 stars. I didn't like it, but you might.
All in all, this is one of my favorite restaurants in Denver, and generally, one of my favorite Thai restaurants. It does get crowded, but good restaurants often do. I should also mention that it is in a fun neighborhood, as I am a fan of Edgewater. They do not serve alcohol, but if you do decide to go on a date here, be aware that there are a number of bars that you can go to for a post-dinner drink. But if the date did not go well, and you got roped into a long discussion about flat earth theory, at least you might have some leftovers. This place gets 4.5 stars out of 5. read more
