Not sure why so many negative reviews. This small post office services the downtown neighborhood and businesses across from Tom McCall Park on the waterfront. Yes, to get there if driving you have to navigate one way streets, but most are locals and walk. if driving, come down SW 1st and park right out front in the 15 minute spot. I've been utilizing this post office for years and the staff is always friendly and helpful. When I ask for the lowest price on return packages, they check various options without hesitation. While I've never used their passport services, which seems to be where issues are, I have bought supplies and sent out multiple packages, purchased holiday stamps and visit here to return prepaid packages - all with no issue and friendly service. read more

It's funny the things you remember in life. We had to renew our baby child's passport and I told my wife "whatever you do, don't accept an appointment at the 1st and Madison post office." Two years ago my ex and I went to renew our teenagers' passports, and the woman in charge of passports was... I struggle for words to describe this... She was abusive and strange. She was making up rules that weren't in the state department instructions. She made us redo both kids' applications because I crossed out and wrote over that cross out with the correct letter (think I wrote a E instead of a D) When she rejected our applications and told us to go fill out new ones, we noticed 3 other families/individuals in the post office doing the same thing. They were silently chuckling to themselves, and one gal said "she's done the same thing to all of us." (Gesturing to everyone filling out paperwork.) Then, after we rewrote everything, she made the final signing of the application insane. She said "if it doesn't look exactly like your signature on your drivers license, I'll reject it." She had us practice on a piece of paper. Do you know how hard it is to sign your name exactly the same as your tiny drivers license signature? When I did my official signature on the application she silently looked at it and was like "I don't know... this is not quite right..."ten seconds passed and she decided to accept it. They are worthless for passports. I had an appointment scheduled and days before the appointment. I get an email saying that they canceled my appointment and I will need to reschedule for some other date. So then I to try their walk-in appointment hours- I get to the waterfront downtown location, pay for parking, only for them to have a sign on the damn door that says that they're not accepting walk-ins today. Valerie was supposed to be helping me, (there was no one else there to help, since the other employee was on passport duty). Valerie was blatantly dull-witted, and very rude. She was so lazy she barely wanted to waddle to the back to look for the mail that I was missing from my residency (a very small problem to go to the post office for..) She did not want to do her job at all, and in the end she still didn't: as she told me she was going to give my information to a manager to talk to a carrier about my issue, therefore she didn't have to do anything at all, and she could put the responsibility onto someone else.... read more

Incredibly curt to the point of rudeness. They clearly don't want to be there and absolutely don't try to hide it. Worst interaction I've had in a long time. The service was also $20 more than calculated on government passport information site and she manually skipped over the receipt screen before I could make a selection. Coco was super rude, condescending and unhelpful. We made an appointment to get my son's passport done. She rolled her eyes when we told her we had an appointment. I'm sorry you hate your job but you don't have to be rude. Definitely not coming back here! UPDATE: we finally got our son's passport renewed at another USPS location and found out that, on top of being condescending and rude, Coco had also been to giving misinformation. She refused to process our application because she said we needed an original birth certificate! Not true!! We found out today that we just needed a copy since it was a passport renewal. Every one star review about the passport office is 100% true. Came here to get my kids' passports. A toddler and a kindergartener. She made us redo both applications even though we had just filled out the same forms ourselves for our own renewals by mail and have already received our new passports. She was not only rude, but made up rules that did not exist. Lied and said there was an interview portion for the children. Then refused to process my three year old's application because she "failed" the interview. With my older daughter's application, she made us all raise our right hands and "solemnly swear" to the contents of the application. (??) It was such an insane encounter, I had to come home to verify on the state department's website. There is definitely no interview requirement. This USPS is a bit hard to find because it's located on the corner of 1st and Madison with one-way streets surrounding it. I recommend coming from 1st Ave because if you miss it on Madison St, you'll be stuck getting onto the Hawthorne Bridge. I've made that mistake before. There's also a 5 mins small parking area on 1st Ave next to the building. The location is smaller than other Post Offices I've been to, which makes social distancing during COVID times difficult. But they make do with what they have by marking lines on the ground six feet apart, which can hold around six people at a time. The employees seem nice, make easy conversation, and pretty knowledgeable of mail services. My transactions are usually quick since I send first class packages. They don't try to upsell you on any upgraded services, but let you know your options if available. Overall, a swift experience, which is what I want from the post office: send it and be on my way. read more

The woman processing the passports here is extremely RUDE!!!! I do not recommend coming here to get your passport. She spoke to my husband and I like we're idiots because we missed a few boxes. She told us we only had a few minutes to redo the forms before our appointment was up. I was so anxious and upset by how she talked to us that I messed up two applications. I rushed to redo the forms that by the time I got to the counter I was flustered. She told me she didn't have time for frustrated people. I told her, "you said I only have a few minutes before my appointment is over." She said that I now had until 3pm when her shift was up. I had to go across the street to get xerox copies of my birth certificate and license. FYI, the post office staff can make copies. Why is she sending people down the street to get expensive copies???? My husband and I had to walk several blocks away to redo my daughter's passport photo because the place that took her photo did it wrong. We had to go back to the counter 3 times. She told my husband he was spoiling our daughter for picking her up when she fussed. She is two and fussing because she was past due for a nap. What should have taken 30 minutes or less to process two passports applications took 2.5 hours. So yes, my daughter was fussy. This woman should not be in a government position working with the general public when she lacks interpersonal skills and has disdain for the people she is serving. read more

A fairly accessible postal location in downtown Portland, this is the first time I've used a USPS downtown since they tore down the big one across from the DMV. Services: They have free mailing supplies, mail packages, letters, have passport applications and photo taking, change of address, P.O. boxes, and just the typical services you'd expect at a post office. There is also a self-serve machine to use when they're closed. Order: Passport photo ($15)-- The process was simple, I paid, gave her my name, and she came out with a camera to take my photo in front of a white screen. She gave me the photo in a small envelope. Customer Service: While some of the employees were strange and the general vibe here was pretty bleak, the Asian female who helped me was quite pleasant. I understand that this is a government service which means it is synonymous with an utter garbage fire, but the service here was over the top bad. The employees were incredibly rude and unhelpful, and they made faces at me and made fun of me when I didn't have the correct documentation. I literally never give bad reviews, since I know people can have a bad day. But I have been in here multiple times and the employees here are incredibly rude. I have a mental disability so sometimes it takes me a second to get my things together, and getting snapped at is a terrible feeling. No matter how nice I am to the ladies here, they act like I'm bothering them by coming in. Overall they act very unprofessional and hostile. I had a appointment at another post office to do my passport application, but the employee was sent home sick for the day, so I was sent to the Waterfront location. It was the end of the day, I was frustrated but I was greeted with a smile , great customer service by Brittany, she had such a positive attitude that I was smiling by the time I left. This place is tucked a little bit out of the way and, at least when I go in, is never crowded. Has everything to get your post office business done -- PO boxes, stamps, the DIY shipping center, packaging, etc etc. I think there is also a passport clerk available on the weekdays. I had to ship something internationally and Sierra was very helpful and friendly. I had never shipped internationally so I had a lot of questions but she was very helpful and guided me along the process and made sure I got what I needed. There was no line to wait in (Saturday at 2pm) and the office was very clean. I would definitely come to this location again! read more

Coco doing the passports was a nightmare. Yelling at everyone in there. she made up a bunch of fake rules about everything including one about why my passport photo that was taken at Walgreens wasnt valid and required me to take another one on the spot and pay her $15. my hair had been up and she told me I had to take it down for this new photo. my hair was literally standing sideways in the photo but I just wanted to get out of there and away from her. I leave and had my original picture from Walgreens measured and found it wasn't invalid. I went back and another employee took the time to actually measure the picture and found that it had never been invalid and reimbursed me (all while Coco yelled not to give me my money back and berated me). coco started yelling that I had been late for my appointment and she should have denied me a passport, I wasn't late. I was in line waiting bc she was behind. I left shaking and in tears. I went online and found a ton of reviews specifically naming her as being a disgrace to USPS. read more

What a joke, I sent a package containing a Christmas present on the 9th of December. 3 weeks have passed and she havent received it. So I contact the company I bought it from. Yesterday at 2:05 p.m. I sent a letter overnight to California and it was "guaranteed" to be delivered by 10:30 a.m. the next day-today. It was not delivered and my boss missed a flight and a huge meeting because of it. I went back today to see where the letter was because when I tracked it, all I got was "in-transit." I brought the copy I had of the receipt and the Priority Express Mail customer copy which were clear and complete. I started off with a woman who quickly passed me off to the guy next to her. The older man working behind the counter said I needed to bring the originals in....why? Does the paper have some magical element infused in the paper that will tell us what's actually happening?! Then I explained that it was guaranteed for 10:30 a.m. delivery one State away and he said, "...no no we need 24-hours until we can determine delivery." Doesn't that negate the whole idea of "overnight" delivery and a "guarantee" at a certain time?!?!? He could not have cared less. I got my ass handed to me at work and wasn't going to do that to someone else. After that experience, I wish I was an asshole to those folks-they DO NOT CARE and will not make any extra effort. I'm dreading having to go to go back and get a refund put on the company card and, of course, I'll bring the originals receipts because the originals apparantley hold the key to the universe. I'm sure the same service will be given and I will have the prime example of why the United States is falling apart. No accountability, no effort. Worst example of government waste keeping these idiots employed here. I have had them give me the wrong information for tracking, lose documents (seriously, how can they track documents if they forget to postmark them?!), send things catastrophically astray because apparently Salem Oregon and Salem Massachusetts are the same thing. Today we made an appointment at 10:15 for a passport and not only did the guy in the empty post office tell us he was to busy to help us at our appointment time, he was confused about what we wanted. Here's a clue dummy, we wanted a passport photo taken at the appointment we made for a passport photo. There isn't a line for the automated machine or the in-person service at 8am. The postal clerk didn't screw up anything the time that I mailed a massive box a while ago. There were a bunch of guys in the lobby who had either just received or were planning to ship a box of weed cookies, or were really trying to make it sound like that was the case.
