A couple was trying to get a U.S. passport for their newborn. They couldn't speak English. Instead of receiving support, they were met with hostility. The passport clerk a woman of color herself was dismissive, rude, and outright refused to help them or ask a Spanish-speaking colleague (who was also a supervisor) to assist. Thankfully, an angel, a stranger stepped in to translate. But even then, the employee made it clear she was annoyed that someone was helping. She voiced it out loud. Where is the basic human decency? Where is the empathy? This country was built by immigrants. Its strength is in its diversity. English is not the "official" language of the United States because we are not defined by one language, but by our shared humanity. And to the USPS an agency that relies on public funding and is under constant political threat your frontline service should reflect the very people who keep you alive. That family deserved respect. That translator deserved gratitude. We all deserve better. Do better!!
