A local librarian told me I had to visit the historic post office in town, and I'm glad I did. The…read morebrick building was built in 1935, constructed with New Deal funds, and is still mostly in original state. It's like taking a step back in time. A mural by Alan Tompkins entitled "Arrival of the Mail" is the first thing I noticed. The 1937 mural depicts people excited and anxiously awaiting the distribution of mail at a time before postal delivery. The mural was commissioned by President Roosevelt to support artists. Tompkins was an art instructor at Herron in Indianapolis. He lived to 100 and painted prolifically during his career. The mural has water damage and was restored by A. Raemaekers in 1974. The post office's lovely oak trim and brass postal boxes are original. Framed local postal history and a heartwarming story of "Tiger, the postal dog" hang above the post boxes. Photos of the building's construction hang on the wall. An addition to the facility was added in 1974 to the south side of the building. Today, the building is part of the Martinsville Historic District. The building is accessible, a ramp has been added. There is limited parking in front. If you're in Martinsville, a visit is recommended.

I paid $2.38 to send an envelope on 12/03/2024 & it never got there. I sent a package to go 80 miles & it took 4 days to get there. I am done with post office. I hope they loose their jobs.

Anyone who knows me knows I am a Post Office geek! Anywhere in the world I go, you can normally…read morefind me penning off a post card, sending a birthday greeting or mailing a bill regularly by stopping in my local post office...with a real person who works for the government's postal agency. I digress..... This branch in Terre Haute gets 5 Stars in my Yelping mind for a few reasons: 1) There never seems to be a line at this location. Heck, I was there at 8:45AM this morning shooting the breeze with the postal clerk for 10 minutes before I even saw another customer walk in. Maybe now that I have dumped this spot into Yelp, I have jinxed myself and swarms of people will be flocking to this location, but I kind of think not. 2) They are open until 7PM during the week and 4PM on the weekend. Say what????? Please know that other US Post Offices across the US are never open this late, especially on a Saturday. 4PM on Saturdays? That is almost 6 full days of having a post office available to you...with funds being cut and losing money, post offices across the country are trimming back days and hours, not having great hours like this Terre Haute branch does. 3). Passport hours are posted as 9am-3:15pm Monday through Friday. Another unheard of at all US Post Offices across the US. (Passport services are not available on Saturdays). 4). Staff is always sincerely pretty nice. Customers to the post office universally can be not nice (short on time, always in a hurry, expectations too high). But I gotta tell yeah, as an official "Post Office Geek," the staff here are pretty nice, normal and sincerely there to help you. 5) They have a very organized and stocked array of merchandise from greeting cards, tapes, post wrapping papers and boxes. Compared to other US Post Office branches, this location always seems relatively organized, clean and stocked. So there is my input on this US Post Office location. Pick up a pen and write your dear mom or kind Aunt Netty a note and stop into the post office to check it out for yourself. Heck, buy the card for your beloved relative that does not even know what your handwriting looks like right there on site and then mail it in one fell swoop!
