Coldstream Homestead Montebello

My experience at this Post Office today was good…read more I came from the gym to send back some C02 tanks. I had them in the car and didn't feel like passing my house to go to my local post office. Google, directions to a Post Office near me. This one is in the cut, like in its own little cul-de-sac. If I was driving and looking, I never would have found it. Plenty of parking spaces and looked well maintained from the outside. Even when going inside, it was orderly. There was a gentleman at the window and about four people in front of me. The postal employee was explaining to the gentleman that she needed to know the country where the package was going. He didn't seem to understand, and they were both getting frustrated. The gentleman finally asked for the supervisor. The supervisor came out and handled the situation with professionalism. She explained to the gentleman that he had to complete another slip for his package; it required more detailed information. After that was settled, the line moved fairly quickly. I like that these employees actually had on Post Office attire/uniforms and they were speaking to me (not at me). I actually prefer this one to my local PO. I'll most likely try to come here instead to mail my packages.

Terrible Post Office. In the 13 years we've lived here, they have never once processed a "Hold…read moreMail" order-- you know, the ones you fill out online?! We go on vacation about once/year-- it's not rocket science. I've complained to a supervisor each time, and they just shrug, like it's of no concern.

The plot thickens. There is a complicating factor in determining why some USPS branches are better…read moreYelp-rated than others (see my list). Some branches are actually located ON college or university campuses. And since lots of American institutions of higher learning now have need-based scholarships and financial aid, there is basically nowhere else in the country where you can find the geographical, class, and racial diversity as on the campus of a first- or second-tier school. Age-wise, things skew towards the 18-22 year old crowd, but of course there are older students, faculty, staff, and parents around, so it's an interesting sample, nonetheless. I used the Loyola University USPS branch quite a bit while teaching there in grad school. It was great! In the summer, when the undergraduates went home, the staff left out all the magazines and newspapers (for free!) to which students had annual subscriptions (They were too young, impetuous, or irresponsible to cancel them for the summer months, or this was not allowed by the mags and papers). Stuff like the NYTimes, Maxim, People, Martha Stewart, Oprah, Time, Sports Illustrated, Wall St Journal, US News & World Report, etc. That gets at least one star for being so cool! Then, this branch was run by an amazing duo of female staffers (one white, one African-America, I think) who were funny, efficient, and patient with students who demanded packages all the time. I mailed many things internationally, including books and applications, and they never blinked. Express mail to Toronto? 2nd Day to NYC? Priority to Peoria? It was all good. So, maybe location matters in a DIFFERENT way than I had been approaching this. Maybe it has to do with a mixture of WHO uses the post office WHEN and for WHAT purposes. Students, for example, don't send a lot of Christmas cards, since they are already home on break by then. And, if they fill out tax forms at all, they typically earn little and can use the 1040EZ forms, so the April 15 lines are also short. Hmmm ... I need to think more about this. The woman behind the counter are unprofessional and rude. Comments being made about "Why is she even here, did she even book an appointment. we are closed?" completely unbelievably unnecessary. When I've waited in line for 15 mins over the actual appointment time. When asked to speak to a manager she mentioned that I was mad about the Incorrect Photo that she told me to get from CVS. Not knowingly being aware of the fact that I've been unsatisfied from the level of introduction from the very start. Nobody greeted me said Hi or even asked what bought me in. But when other customers came in to get their passport serviced. The employees seemly shown favoritism and or excitement to service. Sad to see how poor we treat each other. These young ladies should understand professionalism, etiquette, and integrity to all customers who come to this post office. I will intentionally revist this location for the exact same service and expect better service. Update: Please go to Towson Public Library, for your passport needs. Thanks to Mellisa they will take care of you. Very professional and friendly, speak to you the moment you arrive. They even take passport photos. Ask for Melissa. They are very competent respectable and professional and will educate you on the prices.
