I am a huge fan of Urbane Cafe. I have never been to this location, I have only been to the location on California. Customer service was great, and bathroom is clean. I got my favorite: turkey, brie, and cranberry with side salad. The cranberry was pretty much nonexistent, but the sandwich was still delicious. This review is long overdue, I've been a regular here for two years now. This is one of my favorite lunch spot on this side of town, my two go tos are cilantro chicken salad and steak Chimichurri sandwich. The bread is freshly baked in a pizza oven (so fresh). The staff is always polite and nice. The restaurant itself is always clean and tidy. It's calm and the perfect spot to meet a friend for a flavorful meal that isn't heavy. I love that they're always switching up the agua Fresca and lemonades. Must try the double chocolate chip cookie, the cookies are always warm . I come here at least once a month, it's super consistent so that's definitely a plus. read more

So appreciate the staff here! I Walked in to pick up my order and realized the order had sent to California, ugh. When you login on the urbane website it erases the order you started, so I guess after I started my order and put mt. Vernon location then logged in it switched it to California because I normally order there. So I told the staff uh oh and about the mix up and they quickly said no worries what's the order and they made it all up for me in under 10 mins. Great job urbane team! read more

Fresh food, friendly and quick service. My favorite thing here is the Turkey Cranberry Brie! Can't get enough of it... and the bread. The bread reminds me of my mom's homemade whole wheat bread. I love Urbane Cafe, it's my go to anytime I am near one. However this one was a big disappointment. The pesto sundried tomato sandwich did not have pesto or sundried tomatoes. When I called the store, first I was hung up on, which I'll say possibly discussed on accident which I doubt. When I called back I was advised they were out of sundried tomatoes. And they didn't tell us at the time why? The lady on the phone didn't even want to clearly give me her name. I had to ask her to repeat 3 times. This location is just as good as the one on California! Can't get enough of Urbane Cafe! I could eat here everyday if money wasn't a factor lol! The freshness, the flavors and the quality are always on point. . .It's food I feel good about putting in my body. They make healthy eating fun and enjoyable! Sandwiches are big too! You could literally make 2 meals out of 1 sandwich. We usually order through Uber eats or door dash though, so can't comment on staff or inside the dining area, but the food is always made with love and tastes great. This might be a hidden gem! I'm normally never on this side of town but I found myself in the area and wanted to try something new! I am very glad that I did because the meal I had from this fine establishment was worth leaving the five star review. I also can understand why there aren't too many pictures of the food because I ate mine soon as I opened it. I had my order to go and placed it online so as soon as I got there it was wrapped up and waiting for me. The service was great even though I didn't dine in. They let me know where to pickup my food without making me feel or look like it was my first time (it was my first time). The next time I come I would like to sit and eat so I can enjoy the open and clean seating area. We were looking for a nice lunch place since we recently returned (moved) to this area. We have recently gone to Smart & Final for items & saw this sweet little cafe on Mt Vernon. It was Sunday afternoon with no crowds. My husband ordered the beef sandwich & I ordered a Chicken Sandwich. My husband ate all of large sandwich which he told me was excellent with a nice bowl of tomato Basel soup that I tasted & it was great ! I'll have to order that next time. My Turkey sandwich was delicious & everything on it was fresh & plenty of fresh Turkey not processed Turkey like they carved it right from a whole Turkey. I only thing I had trouble with it was it was enormous & I could only eat 1/2 of the sandwich. Our lunch came with a drink & total cost was under $25 but considering the freshness in the food, the amount of food we received was I think a fair price for a Sunday brunch. The ambiance was nice, small & large table for comfortable seating for a small group. The place was very clean & service from the staff was great.. & little straight forward, maybe smiles would be nice, but they were NOT rude but just "just matter of fact". Urbane Cafe is my go-to when looking for healthier food options. The portions are filling and the side of bread that came with my meal was soft and warm. The Crunchy Peanut Salad was amazing, and I also added avocado to this dish. (I recommend extra peanut sauce if you're a fan of peanuts). The Cilantro Chicken Salad (with extra avocado) is also a win, and I usually get some of their warm cookies on the side. (My friends love them!) History

Established in 2003.

It all started in 2003 when owner Tom Holt realized there was a missing niche in the Ventura restaurant scene. He wanted a great sandwich and salad 'Äì something different, while still being dedicated to delicious-tasting food. He understood that every great sandwich starts with the freshest of bread, so he designed the cafe around a hearth oven. Working with his friend Pete, they came up with a bread recipe that was soft, delicious and baked fresh, right in front of your eyes. It didn'Äôt stop there though, he created a menu centered around locally sourced ingredients, juicy-roasted meats, and crafted sauces to give each creation its own unique flavor. Urbane Cafe loves being the place where friends, family, and communities gather to celebrate and make memories over delicious food. Our passion is to have our guests walk out happy every time and keep them coming back for more.

Meet the Business Owner: Tom H.

Tom Holt is the owner, founder and Chief Bread Head of Urbane Cafe. As a young child Tom developed a love for motocross racing. His first career was at the age of sixteen when he became a professional motocross racer. In 2003, Tom Holt'Äôs vision was to bring a great-tasting, healthy, and affordable sandwich and salad restaurant to the friendly people of Ventura, California: a nice, small town where he grew up. Urbane Cafe quickly became the gathering place where people meet to engage, relax and enjoy a great meal at a great value. The success of that first location proved that Tom had struck a chord with the local community. I ordered a coffee with cream and he brought it in a little tray with the creamer on the side. The table was a little wobbly and the coffee spilled all over the tray. Luckily Te-see got that fixed with a sugar packet. Jonny brought me another tray with coffee and cream. Almost everything was plant base, some egg and chicken but definitely no red meat. Unless I didn't see it. So I ordered the chilaquiles rojos and my daughter the Happy-go-Lucky-bowl. Te-see got the torta española and slew got a pancake to shared. All the food came very fancy well presented. Almost like magazine perfect. I loved them. We were taking videos and pictures as we should like a truly Yelpers that we are. Haha! The food was so tasty and flavorful. I loved my chilaquiles. They were perfect for my palate. They were crunchy and still with the flavor of the sauce. So delicious. They came with a little bowl of beans from the olla. (Freshly cooked) Te-see mention that her torta española was great as well. It came with some green salad. And it did really look so good. We assumed, like most places that accept large reservations, that there would be some level of table service. Instead, the table was basically just a place for us to sit and eat. If we wanted drinks, we had to go up to the bar ourselves to order them. When it came time to eat, we had to leave the table again and go up to the front counter to place our food orders. No one came to the table to take orders, check on us, or even bring water. We ended up having to get water ourselves as well. What was most frustrating was at the end when I went to pay the bill and was told that an automatic 20% gratuity had been added because we were a large party. I completely understand adding gratuity when a staff is actively serving a large group taking orders, bringing drinks, refilling water, checking on the table, etc. But in this case there was essentially no service provided. Everything from ordering drinks, ordering food, and getting water was self-service. If the restaurant is going to run this way, that's fine but it should be clearly communicated when a large group makes a reservation, and automatic gratuity for "service" that didn't happen doesn't feel appropriate. We come to Bakersfield twice a year and after this experience, I don't think we will ever be back.
