I do like Ethiopian food. This (somewhat) under appreciated cuisine is still a bit mystifying although I've had my enough share of experiences with it in the past.
Upon stumbling upon this restaurant by accident after I dropped off someone at the apartment complex right across the street, this restaurant didn't fail to capture my attention. Don't you love discovering a business like that? Yelping is so much fun!!
Very simple inside the restaurant). Fancy is not everything. The quality matters the most. I couldn't tell what kind of restaurant it was when I was standing in front of it. When I discovered that it was an Ethiopian (once inside), I got excited.
The lady behind the counter was friendly and helpful. Even though it was around 10:30am at the latest, I wanted something from the main menu section (something more like a dinner plate.) When I pointed one of the big dishes out to her she said it wasn't available. Ugh!! Hence, I went with what's called "Fuul" (regular.) It's kind of a stew type thing with beans and veggies is what I determined. Looked good on the colored menu. I hadn't had coffee at that point so to go along with the Fuul, I got me a cup of cappuccino.
$2.99 for a 12oz cap can't happen nowadays so I was happy with the price. $12.99 for a good portioned Fuul was also not bad.
My cappuccino was well made but it was shockingly HOT! I couldn't hold the cup any longer than 10 seconds. Magically, it stayed that way for quite a bit. I'm not complaining here (LOL!!)
Whereas I sipped my cappuccino away in the car while driving, I waited to eat my Fuul until I got home.
My first impression of the Fuul after the first bite was.....I definitely found it interesting where I noticed a good amount of kick in it. And the kick was strangely manageable (even though I'm not into spicy stuff.) Good spices were also apparent.
One thing I couldn't get over was some veggie that tasted undercooked where it somewhat ruined the dish. It may have been the onion but I actually don't mind fresh onions so I don't quite know what it was that bothered me. This dish could have been a superb one had everything been cooked well. Two large bread rolls came with it.
Well, I want to try something else when I go back. I still want to believe that this restaurant can do so much more than what I experienced with one dish. read more
