I always love passing here when I am on Colfax. I was walking from MLK library when I smelled the fresh baked goods and knew it was El Paisa panaderia. I got the pan de muerto, the caramel churro and the pumpkin decorated concha. The pan de muerto is only available for Dia de Los muertos - so go grab one! I was informed by one of the staff when i asked about it. I have only had the chance to try the pan de muerto. It is fresh, has a pillowy texture, brioche style bread but not too sweet with orange zest and anise. Perfect with tea or coffee! I know the others will be just as delicious as are all their baked goods. Might report back on the others when I get to them but until then I'm going to continue enjoying the pan de muerto and drink my tea. A warm thank you to the staff here. They are always so nice! After years of driving by this bakery, I decided to stop in to purchase treats for a medical clinic. There is a wide variety of baked goods to select from. When you walk in, be sure to grab a tray and tongs. There were a few savory options as well. Items I purchased were $1-4 each. Loved their mini concha for $1. Would have been nice to have labels with main ingredients and allergens. There was a slight language barrier with the staff, but nothing Google translate can't help with. There was parking along colfax. This is a grab and go spot, no place to eat the items purchased. Check out this bakery if you're in the area. Our daughter wanted an amazing tres leches cake for her birthday and a quick search on Yelp lead me to this awesome bakery. Thank you Yelpers!!! The cake was so delicious and moist with wonderfully light frosting and a strawberry filling. I'm sure the cake served 30 but just ten of us gobbled it all up with everyone asking for a second slice. Yes, we were piggies but it was THAT good. Several family members mentioned this is the cake they want in their birthdays also. All their pastries/breads are always fresh. It never disappoints. The staff is always friendly.

This is a hole in the wall place that has such a huge selection of bread and pastries - it was certainly a overwhelming to pick out a few to try for just one person! My only qualm is that I wish there were more descriptions of each pastry and their fillings, but it was also fun not knowing what to expect. I tried a churro which had apple filling I believe - and ate it all before I took the picture. The staff are super nice and helpful in making selections. This is such an amazing bakery find!! They are open almost any hour of the day and are stocked up on everything no matter the time you go ( I have now been about 3 times). The prices are insanely reasonable, coming out to about $1-$4 per item depending on what you order. The goods are baked fresh daily (so you'll have to eat them within 1-2 days or keep things refrigerated), and absolutely delicious. I don't usually love panaderias because I find that most of the baked goods end up being too stale/hard (I prefer my breads a little chewier), but the breads here are amazing, even the conchas (which I've always disliked). Everything is fresh, tasty, not too sweet, with great texture. My favorite thing I've found here is their Quesadilla Salvadorena. It's almost like a cheesecake but cornbread texture? Hard to describe, but its slightly sweet and savory and makes for an absolute treat. read more

Coming from Houston, I miss the panaderias filled with conchas, pan and tres leches. I was craving it and happened to see this bakery along Colfax. It's clearly a local staple based on the friendly greetings between regulars and the cashier. The churros here are filled, making them a must-get. I also loved their pumpkin (calabaza) empanadas, which are generously filled and not too sweet. Their pan de muerto was also delicious. One of the few Panaderias that's open on Saturday until 8:30 PM! Stopped by here to grab some pastries and jalapeno bread for Sunday breakfast. Let me tell you, we were NOT disappointed. The jalapeno buns were freshly baked and had a tonn of jalapeno cream cheese stuffing. Coupled together with a variety selection of different pastries all of which were fresh and delicious. While we were there we also grabbed a small serving of the Tres-leches (with chocolate drizzle), which was perfectly moist with plenty of the tres-leches mixture soaking the cake, the crumb of the cake was nice and dense giving it a good contrast to stand up to the soak (a lot of places get this wrong giving you mushy cake). The sweetness was perfect in my opinion as i don't like my deserts sickly sweet with a nice layer of cream and fruit in between the layers. Delicioso! Love it here. The gal at the counter was super sweet and so is the pan dulce! Got myself four conchas, one in every colour to relive my childhood and throughly enjoyed each single caloric and sugar overdose. They also have a section for spices and drinks. Go in, go up to counter, grab and orange tray and a pair of tongs and fill it up! Will be back! Bonus*** got hit on by an already drunk homie who was carrying his tall boy straight out in public (no brown bag for him dammit!) at 9:45 am. I have been craving Pan Dulce (Mexican Sweet Bread) since we moved from East L.A. and never found any worthwhile until yesterday afternoon. My other half and I were on our way to the Denver Botanical Garden and Google sent us in a direction that lead us to this discovery. Oh Em Gee, was I happy! We both spotted it on Colfax and had to stop. The smell of fresh ,warm bread... Oh Yes Please! What I loved was one young woman was removing an almost empty tray of donuts and replacing it with a new tray of fresh ones. And a guy in back was cutting biscuits in back and this was at 3:30 in the afternoon. I chose wisely Two Chocolate Conchas ( they look like seashells) and one Pan de Muertos ( a special bread made for Day of the Dead). I was in heaven. Soft, tasty and of course messy. Wouldn't have it any other way! The sugar does dribble about but that's part of the experience. They make/sell cakes and have a selection of cold drinks also for purchase. We stayed around the corner from this spot and I knew we'd have to stop in for a taste. No fully sure what most things were but that is half the fun! We selected a few familiar items like a churro and chocolate dipped palmier-type treat. Both were tasty and seemed freshly made. The fluffy powdered roll with the pudding dollop was a bit underwhelming - appreciated the unique spice element for a change in flavor but the roll itself was dry and seemed a day or more old. The strawberry streusel type fold over was very tender thanks to the egg based on the pastry, which I appreciated. The coarse ground sugar made for a nice presentation and added sweetness along with the fruit filling. All in all this was probably the sweetest option which I appreciated that the others weren't overly so compared to most American bakery items. I think my impulse by at the register may have been my favorite item, or at least a tie for second with the strawberry turnover. The roll was very fresh, tender and mildly sweet and enveloped a wonderful cream cheese and jalapeño center that could stand alone as a sandwich in my opinion. For only $1.50 it was a great addition to our order, which totaled under $6.00. Great value for the quality selection. Would love to try a few more of the less sweet/classic bread or roll options if we stop back before leaving town. I got a chocolate donut and immediately ate it in the car lol it was very soft and fresh and delicious and had a very nice cinnamon flavor. Will definitely be picking one up every time! The Mexican bread here is absolutely wonderful! Thy are constantly replenishing bread and it smells like heaven in there. Each bread I selected, and there were many, looked and smelled fresh. They had my favorite pan con queso which is sweet cream cheese filled bread - yum! The conchas were soft and the texture was just right. None of the bread I tasted was dry, all was soft and moist with amazing flavor and with fresh bread coming out regularly, well, you can't just buy 1. Why the 4 stars, well I saw there were used tongs in the drinking fountain. Hopefully they were the dirty ones waiting to go back to get washed instead of rinsed on the fountain. I also think they should provide clean tongs and trays after each use, however, I've never seen that at any panaderia, so whatevs. Lastly, the gal replenishing bread JD on gloves but touched the gross storage case handles to put bread in and then went in the back to sprinkle sugar on fresh bread. This place is dangerous. Dangerous to your waistline and your sanity. How do I not pick more than... a dozen??? I don't like leaving sweets lying around the house and I don't want delicious baked goods to get stale so if I buy more than 1 or 3 or... however many, I EAT THEM! EAT THEM ALL!! DANGEROUS!!! The routine goes like this. You walk in and go to the counter and pick up a plastic tray and a pair of tongs. You make your selections (the concha are a fav. They are flat and round topped with a sugar blend. I like the brown topped cinnamon flavored ones. They taste like a better version of a donut.) and then take them up to the counter to pay and have them bagged or boxed to take out (I haven't had the gauche to just say no to the bag and shove a whole one in my pie hole but you never know...). All the cake type varieties are good as are the denser cake types. My favorite Mexican pastry is called a Yo-Yo and it's two half round cake/biscuit cookies dipped in raspberry jelly that are then stuck together and rolled in shredded coconut. If any of that sounds good to you then do yourself a favor. EAT THEM! read more

Love this place ! I don't even live in the area but I drive all the way over there just to get their amazing Pan Dulce. The one thing I liked about this place is that it's on the corner on colfax and right away you can see all the goodies displayed from the outside. As you walk in you you get the amazing smell ! And they have a wide selection. There was only one little downside not everything was labeled so I had no idea what everything was. So I had to ask a few times. But everything is fresh and delicious and you can see the staff baking fresh in the back as well . Oh they have cakes to order too! Overall I highly recommend this place. El Paisa recently reopened after a two year closure due to a fire. I wanted to show my support and stopped in for a Mexican sugar cookie. I walked out with cookies, pan dulce, fruit bars, and bolillos (rolls filled with cheese and jalapenos). If you have ever had a pan dulce, you know that they can be really bad and tasteless or mildly sweet with nice flavor. El Paisa has the best pan dulce I have ever eaten and I grew up in San Antonio, the sugar topping was perfect. The tres leches cake looks devine and so do all the other treats. I've been looking for a good panaderia for months! I was on my way to another panaderia down the street when I spotted this place on the corner. We walked with the intention of buying just a few pan de huevos, and walked out with nearly two dozen goodies! El Paisa had a very nice variety considering the modest size of their store. The associates were very helpful and even pulled out some fresh, additional empanadas that weren't displayed. The pan de huevos could have been much softer, but the flavor was good.
