I finally decided to try Urban Plates after eyeing it for a few years, and WOW, it was yummy! When deciding what to order, the menu instantly reminded me of Tender Greens. There were so many protein and side options. I ended up going with the chicken breast plate and added buffalo sauce. It was delicious! The mashed potatoes were buttery and flavorful, and the side salad was perfectly dressed with crunchy, garlicky croutons. I ended up getting it again for lunch the next day because it was so yummy! I frequent the Urban Plates location in Pasadena, so I was excited to try the Pleasant Hill location for the first time. Unfortunately, the experience was incredibly disappointing. I ordered the beef and mushroom braise, and when it arrived there were literally only two small pieces of beef in the entire bowl. I mentioned it to our server, and she was kind enough to bring out another bowl, which I appreciated. Unfortunately, that didn't solve the problem. The beef itself was extremely tough and chewy--nothing like a properly braised stew. It was honestly one of the worst braised beef stews I've ever had. We also ordered plain corn on the cob for our toddler, but it came out with an orange seasoning on it instead of being plain as requested. That was frustrating since it was specifically ordered for a young child. I've always had consistently good experiences at the Pasadena location, so this visit was especially surprising. Based on this experience, I won't be returning to the Pleasant Hill location. read more

My mom loves coming here. Today, service was great. We both ordered their cage free chicken with the beet salad, mom got it with rice while I had Mac and cheese. Also got an additional shrimp for $5.50 more to entree. We got two dragon fruit drinks. Both the beets and Mac and cheese are my favorites. Can't go wrong with the Mac and cheese. We really appreciated staff coming around to check on us. Manuel came over a few times even brought us water. He was very attentive. My mom loves the outdoor ambiance. The chicken was subpar; it had flavor, but it seemed poorly cut and had too much skin. The lemonade was good and refreshing. So a few months ago I did a Yelp review on this place, not for the food but for the customer service. Well, I must say AUSTIN has been a game changer for me. My daughter and I went back just to try it out again a week or so ago, and without going into all the specifics, I must say Austin (the manager) has got to be the BEST manager I have ever encountered. There was a small issue, not even big enough to mention, but Austin jumped into action and left my daughters' and my mouths wide open in awe of how professional, courteous, and friendly he was. DINNER: LAMB OSSO BUCO AND MANGO TART One night in February after my nieces' play at an elementary school our family came here for dinner. One dish that intrigued me was lamb osso buco. Osso buco is normally veal so I wanted to try that dish with lamb. For dessert I ordered mango tart. Anytime lamb is served at a restaurant I tend to order it. I also love eating osso buco. I set an expectation that I would love the lamb osso buco. However the lamb tasted gamey. The aftertaste after every bite made it difficulty for me to finish this dish. What saved dinner for me was the mango tart. It removed the aftertaste I ate from the lamb osso buco. I don't visit Pleasant Hill often. I can give this place another try. However my rating for Urban Plates is based off this one dinner. read more

I've always been curious about this restaurant having seen it while out & about in the area. I finally had the opportunity to try it out during a company luncheon, and I must say, "Wow!!!" Their focus is on naturally organic, grass-fed, etc. food that caters to health-conscious foodies. I love how you are able to create your plate according to your own dietary restrictions, or favorites. My plate consisting of grilled grass-fed steak, topped with a delicious chimichurri sauce, fresh steamed broccoli, and garlic parm mushrooms made it the perfect plate for me. The only thing that kept me from finishing it was that it was very filling... and that was without the bread. Although not everyone in our party got everything they ordered at once, their wonderful waitstaff went above and beyond to correct it and came back to check on us frequently. Overall, the restaurant is very clean & spacious. No such thing here - just order at the front and they bring your order to you. We had the grilled chicken cobb salad and the beet salad. We ordered a gluten-free item as a separate transaction on purpose, to keep things simple and minimize risk of cross contamination, as one of my family members has a serious condition. The food was fairly disappointing. My wife and older son both thought that their chicken was gamey. I've been on a "Cobb Salad Kick" lately, so I figured I'd try theirs. It didn't stack up compared to three Cobb salads I've had recently at other restaurants. There wasn't enough dressing, and the chicken wasn't that great. It didn't have that much going on. Disappointed! One other negative: I personally do not like the 3% "Living Wage" fee added. It seems odd when businesses do this. I would prefer a higher priced item, clearly listed on the menu, over what I consider to be a "sneaky" markup.
