Shopping at Uptown can be described, much like the occasional shirt for sale, as irregular. Some days you leave with a bag [or three] full of fantastic fashion forward, finds - other days empty-handed. The staff are a hodgepodge of personalities; many friendly, kind and eager to take on the role of a personal shopper. A few choose to behave like stereotypical angst-ridden teenagers, complete with a misanthropic attitude and the interpersonal charm of an arid cactus. I've always enjoying hunting down what I might term a bargain so discovering a like-new garment I can add to my wardrobe for a fraction of it's FMV (Fair Market Value) delights me. Not finding something is just part of the process. Let's take a moment to discuss their buying program. Yes, cash offers are often pennies on the dollar compared to an items original retail price. However, you as the potential seller have negligible responsibilities and a minimal time investment. The process is easy: drop off items, fill out a short form, return later that day and review any offer. If you accept any portion of their offer you are given the choice of 1) cash in hand 2) store credit which is immediately available. You would probably get a higher price using eBay, a consignment shop, Craigslist, any of a dozen apps, but the responsibilities of advertising, interacting with buyers, shipping/arranging meetings, processing sales, feedback, and everything else involved in acting as the seller is squarely on your shoulders. So for a fair apples-to-apples comparison (their offer vs. your potential net profit), you must take into consideration the value of your time. Lastly, it may be more financially advantageous to donate your items and apply the tax deduction - such details should be discussed with your accountant and financial professional(s). read more

Visited this place for the first time today, and I loved it. I was buying and selling. I brought in a closetful of dresses that don't fit anymore and successfully sold about half of them. The staff was super nice about anything they didn't take. I do think they have a predetermined line for why they aren't accepting clothes ("some had a little more wear"), but that's probably to defuse potential conflicts. And frankly, I'd rather have a non-specific explanation. The shopping experience was lots of fun! UTCS's stock is stylish and in good condition, not to mention thoroughly organized by size. Because they carry so many different brands, you have pretty good variety at your disposal, in terms of both fit and aesthetic. I do think it's fair to say they skew younger overall-- plenty of F21 and UO here, but lots of J. Crew and such as well. While I hadn't actually planned to buy anything, in browsing the store I found an adorable 50s-style floral dress, a cute belted trench, and a nude spring bag-- all for less than the store credit they offered me! What a great place! I was apprehensive about going because I was afraid it would be a cluttered 'consignment shop'. I was SO wrong. Great clothes, great order.. AWESOME staff! I hate this place!! Every time I go in to sell my clothes they never take any of it. Even though some items are 1-2 months old with tags still on. I've looked at the stuff that they sell, I don't think any of it is of any quality and I find it to be a little expensive. I can do much better at the major department stores with coupons. Today was my first attempt at selling items to the store. It was a disaster! I waited two hours, for them to pick through my items, and they accepted two items only! One item was new and the other item was lightly worn. Both designer brand sneakers. I was offered $10 cash!! Unbelievable. Typically I sale to Mustardseed in Bethesda. In the past, they have offered me more $$ for my items, and definitely more for my designer brands. I'm not sure what's going on here, but, I will not try to sell here again. Uptown Cheapskate is one of the few places I shop- why go anywhere else when this place has it all and discounted! I always find things I'm looking for- and not looking for, but the prices are so good I have to buy them anyways! They also are very covid minded and have changed their buying policies and even remove tried-on clothes from the floor. The staff are always so friendly and helpful! There isn't a single member of the staff I don't enjoy, however most recently I have had great outfit suggestions from Imani. Imani has helped me so so many times while I've been shopping by starting fitting rooms for me while I'm browsing and has shared uptown insider info about their Facebook page's exclusive listings. read more

This location has nice clothes to buy, but I will never sell anything there again. The first time I sold clothes there, I got back under $20.00 dollars for like 3 pieces of clothing. Disappointing. I just let them donate the rest. I decided to give them another shot, so I brought my Uggs there. My Uggs are used, but great condition. After waiting nearly a hour on a offer, they said they would give me $12.00 in cash and $14.00 dollars in credit. Do I look desperate? I said no and took my Uggs back and sold them on Poshmark and got over $70.00 dollars for them. If you believe your item is worth more, take it back. Do not sell it to them or donate it. I love that the entire staff is wearing gloves and masks and that they require masks from their customers. They also clean the clothing that customers try on before returning them to the racks. The clothing is very well organized and the place feels very clean. The staff is helpful and very polite and the prices are reasonable. I will be shopping there again. read more

I was immediately greeted as I walked in and told where each section was (lulu lemon, sale, etc). As I shopped, I was holding a bit of clothes and a lady offered to take my clothes to a fitting room. At the end of my purchase the same lady asked me when my birthday was as they give 15% off during your birthday month. NOTE - I am writing this review based strictly on my attempt to sell some used clothing, I have no experience attempting to buy. From what I saw of the store in my limited time in there though, it appears they have a nicely organized store with nice-looking clothing. If were I looking for trendy stuff at a discount, I would definitely consider popping my head into this store for a look. As a seller, however, I was disappointed. After cleaning out my kids' closest I had a large collection of American Eagle tops, mostly tee-shirts and polos but some sweatshirts, long-sleeve shirts, and hoodies as well. 90% of them looked like they had never been worn, although I know of course that they had but I'm sure none of them more than a couple of times so the vast majority were in pretty much mint condition. Being a brand they advertise that they are looking for on their website, coupled with the fact that they match the demographic the store caters too (teens and young adults), I figured that easily 80%of the stuff would be purchased. The first sign of trouble was when I dropped the items off for inspection on a lazy Tuesday afternoon (arrived there about 5:30 p.m.). According to their website, this should have taken up to an hour (at most), so my plan was to drop them off, go to dinner, and come back afterwards. I was told that they wouldn't be ready for us to come back until THE NEXT DAY! Our only other options were to either come back another day, but it HAD to be within 3 days or they'd donate them away. Considering I drove 25 miles out of my way to get them there, this now meant I'd have to make a second trip (that's 50 miles round trip, of course) because they couldn't do an evaluation in a reasonable amount of time. We were going on vacation in 2 days so we couldn't leave them until we returned, either. That sucked, and I almost took them all back right there, but I need to get rid of these things so figured I'd bite the bullet and make a second trip the next day. The people working there that we were speaking with weren't rude or anything mind you, but neither were they friendly or apologetic that they couldn't abide by the terms of their own website. Going back the next day, dealing with a second round of much-hated Beltway traffic again, I arrived to be told that they would not be taking ANY of the items at all. The worker explained that they generally don't take items that either out of season (the long-sleeved stuff and hoodies I guess, which I understand) or items that are older than 6 - 12 months. Now their website says 'up to 2 year old', but in either case I had called ahead of time to ask about the viability of taking these items in there for sale, and if they'd have just told me on the phone that they wouldn't take anything older than 12 months it would have saved everyone involved a lot of time because I wouldn't have even bothered taking them in. Overall, I would just caution folks that unless your items are in pristine condition and have only been purchased within the same calendar year, don't expect to sell them to this store. And for customer service, your mileage may vary. read more

I gave them many expensive clothes, much from urban outfitters which cost me 60 dollars a piece. After waiting around the store for 50 minutes, they show you your offer. I was offered 15.5 dollars. Very, very upset about this. Waste of time and donation. Never going back, don't waste your time here. Better off selling on Depop or EBay. read more

Started shopping here at the Black Friday sale and have been back at least monthly to buy and sell. Good selection of great brands. They usually purchase more items than we anticipate and we take the higher store credit amount to put towards our new picks. The return policy is fair. The management and personnel have always been friendly, helpful and easy to work with. The clothing is well-organized and the store feels clean...not overcrowded. read more

I really love this store and the awesome designer clothes that I often find here. The customer service is generally great. I came in yesterday and Chris, the store associate, was super friendly. What leads me to leave a two star review, though, was the experience I had at checkout. This month is my birthday month, which means I get 15% off of my purchase. The cashier forgot to apply the discount so she had to have a manager come over and void it out and apply it again. No big deal - people are human and make mistakes. She fixed my purchase and everything was fine. Then, a middle aged blonde lady who I'm assuming was the owner came over and said to the cashier in a mean tone of voice " What number is that today?" (Meaning mistakes) The cashier responded "Two" and the blonde manager said rudely "Three strikes in one day and you're out" and stormed away. This all took place right in front of me. I felt so bad for the girl and said something encouraging to her. I love this store but am seriously questioning whether I should give them my business now. read more

I'm one of those people that NEVER finds anything at thrift stores and not only did I find something... it was a J.Crew jean jacket!!! for only $19! I wanted to cry tears of joy. They have a LOT of clothes/shoes and I like that you don't need an appointment to sell clothes and it's a lot nicer that any other sell back or thrift store I've been in before. Aptly named because the proprieters of this business are INCREDIBLY cheap. Although they claim to offer 25-45% of the prices they offer, this is clearly not the case when you compare the prices they offer you and the prices for similar items on their rack. I think the prices they are quoting are assuming your items sit on the rack for 6 months and they have to mark them down to sell them. Shopping here might be good, but DO NOT SELL. It's totally a rip off and they're extremely particular: they will only take super trendy items, not classics or basics. read more

Such a love/hate with this store. I love the random pieces that they carry and most of the time I end up buying some things. However, I hate their customer service and hangers! The people working are super unfriendly and come off way too cool to chat with you. The hangers don't hold the clothes either and they pack way too much stuff on the racks. It's a messy challenge to shop. They also sell crappy used old navy or forever 21 clothes which doesn't make sense at all. Stick to higher end better quality pieces, put some rubber on the hangers, and retrain your staff about customer service! read more

I have been here approximately 5 times to sell my items and each time has been a great experience. The staff is friendly, courteous, and professional. The store is clean. While they haven't taken everything I bring to them, I'm always thrilled because I'm able to unload clothing, handbags, and shoes that I no longer want. These are pieces that I would otherwise give away or donate, so any money I get for them is a bonus. I also like that I can drop my items off and come back later in the day to pick up my money and the items they couldn't take. I'll keep coming back! read more

Very hit or miss. I've gone in with a bag of quality stuff and they've taken most of it and I've received $90 cash or, yesterday for instance, I came in with a bag of similar quality clothing and shoes and they took maybe two things and I received $20. Definitely try and go on a day/time when they aren't busy, call ahead to check, they'll pay more attention to your stuff. Waited 3.5 hours for them to process my stuff when I was quoted 2 hours. I get it, they were busy, it happens. Was mildly insulted when they returned my bag almost entirely full but still gave me the same canned response as always: "we are giving back just a few things but we found a lot of great stuff we loved." Really? They have their good days and bad days. Will be back, but not anytime soon to this location. read more

The best thrift store I've ever been to! I have always had terrible thrift store experiences at places like goodwill, finding mostly out of style clothes from Target. So, I had very low expectations. When I walked in, it was full of stylish, fashionable, and quality clothing from good brands like J. Crew and Clavin Klein. I found a great Clavin Klein t-shirt for about $10 and a J crew button down for about the same price. The selection was so great, I think I could do a could portion of my shopping here. I would highly recommend this shop for anyone who needs good clothes on a budget. read more

I used to love going to this boutique to both buy and sell clothes, however, they've officially lost my business. Today I went into the store to sell some of my clothes hoping to make some cash, as the store advertises itself as a place that gives you a fair price. They took 4 brand new pieces of clothing (that add up to at least $150 new) and apparently all that they could spare to give me was $10. I understand that if a store is buying used clothes you won't get the same amount you paid for them. However, I think most will agree that this was not a fair price for clothes that were in perfect condition and still in style. Sadly, this isn't the first time that something like that has happened. I love the clothes in this boutique and the other things they sell, but I find it wildly disappointing that they run their business by ripping off young girls like myself. read more

As a retail store this store is amazing. They have all the latest brands and at cheaper prices than original retail prices. They have really cute styles and gets new stuff in everyday! But as a place to sell your clothes. You might as well just donate them to a good will because first they prob wont take your clothing that you bought years and years ago because its older season even though its still fashionable and in good shape. And second even if they do want to buy some of your clothing they will give you not that much money back. Don't even bother selling your clothes here unless you bought your clothing recently. read more

For those of you bitching about this place not giving you more for your items......hello! Buying clothes isn't like buying a house - their value GREATLY depreciates after you've worn them. Also, the stores has to make a profit. They're not going to buy your dress for $20 and sell it for $25. If I paid $120 for a J.Crew dress three years ago....even thought it's in mint condition....I don't expect for get any more than $10 for it since they're likely not going to be able to sell it for more than $25. I couldn't agree with Nancy more. I feel taken advantage of and after my most recent experience, think I will take my items to some more appreciative, more high-end shops in D.C. (that like J.Crew, Ralph Lauren, etc.). I have been to this store three times with the interest of selling things. The employees are as friendly as could be but there is no explanation whatsoever with their process, even when they aren't busy. I have always gone with small loads. Most recently, I brought six items when the store opened. There was one other customer in the store. After taking my bag, the employee went back to rearranging the shelves while I tried to pretend to be interested in perusing. I'm at the age and profession where their clothes are no longer appropriate for me so the wait time is a complete waste for me. It would have been much nicer to have actually been waited on (hence why I came at the store opening). When she finally did go through my six items, she took two and offered me $7 for both of them. One was a dress that was originally $150 from Nordstrom. The last time I brought in items, they also took two items and I also received $7. Those items were much less significant. I feel very cheated. They claim to offer a percentage of what they plan on selling each item for. Certainly seems like dishonesty to me. Bottom line: take your nice clothes elsewhere or donate them and take the tax deduction. read more

yup definitely cheapskates. I brought over two bebe dresses originally priced at $150 and they were almost brand new (worn one time each) and a few really nice expensive jeans. For all 8 items roughly a cost of $500 in retail, they paid me $30. I was in such shock that I agreed to sell it to them. SO now I just have words of advice: DO NOT SELL your nice items, and only go over to buy jeans. The rest of their clothes are second hand forever 21 items. read more

I went in here with a shopping bag full of designer clothes most new with the tickets still attached. I will admit that some of the items were several years old but still on trend and because they were so well made they were truly classic pieces. They took nothing but an Old Navy dress and a Love culture tank, the cheapest things in the bag. In the future I will just donate all of my things to our church at least there they will be appreciated. I would not shop there either when you could buy new for a few pennies more. read more

When they first opened, I was very excited because they were offering lots of higher end consignments (J.Crew, etc). This is no longer the case. If I wanted cheap crap from H&M/Forever21, I would go to H&M/Forever 21. Those stores serve their purpose, but the clothes never hold up well and are definitely not worth consigning. Recently let my teenager bring in a bag of clothes to resale. All of it was name brand but they only took 5 pairs of Hollister shorts and gave her $6. Really pathetic and if I would have known they only took the shorts then I would've just donated them to Goodwill instead. It wasn't until we got home that we found out what they took--they don't even bother telling you what was bought back. Would not recommend selling anything to this place; I felt like they cheated her and you can definitely get a better deal by donating to charity and take the tax credit instead. I don't shop much and HATE malls, so this is my favorite place to bulk shop every now and then to beef up my wardrobe. I usually shop the sale section, but occasionally find stuff in the regularly priced section. Where else can you spend $91 on 13 pieces of clothing?
