Go someplace else. Rudest service I've encountered in a long time. We ordered the BLT combo and "Veggie Special Wrap" combo. The old woman went on some kind of rant about it being Saturday and she's working overtime so there are no specials. That's what the wrap is called! We ended up paying over $18 for a turkey wrap (which we had to send back), a BLT made from some precooked bacon, two bags of chips, and two flat sodas from the fountain. I think I'm finally done with this place. I've been a long time customer. We sometimes laugh at how cheap the management can be. I'm part of their loyalty program. If I buy 9 the 10th is free. It's a nice bonus, but they always try to downsize you. If you always buy a large coffee, they want your free coffee to be medium. Seriously? This time, as I bought my 9th sandwich, they told me the 10th is no longer free, it's now $5.00 off. She scratched the word free off of my card and wrote $5.00. This kind of cheapness is so irritating. I've watched them argue with customers over pennies for years. They have a tip jar, but it's only for the manager who runs the cashier, none of the cooks or staff get to share the tips. Pretty bad tasting food. We got the smoked salmon bagel and the salmon was not even smoked. Just flavorless raw fish. Waste of money for $8 plus I was feeling sick afterwards. The disappointment of a wrong coffee order is real. I ordered a Cappucino but instead they gave me a special edition with steamed milk and no foam, and I hate to say that as a coffee enthusiast, that was disappointing. The service is decent. There was nothing outstanding in it - your typical run-of-the-mill cafe. Asian ladies are usually stoic and visceral at cashiers, so I didn't mind much. However, when I got to my meeting and opened the sandwich bag, the disappointment and neutral impression was washed away by the juicy, unrelenting tidal wave of warm freshness that was my pastrami sandwich. The bread, pressed to perfection; the cheddar, zesty and sticky; the pastrami, gushing savory juices into my mouth like the beach during the Miami hurricane season. I would definitely recommend this place for outstanding and delicious paninis, but not if you want your fix of artisan or special coffee orders. Uptown Cafe is a quick fix for any time of the day despite the lack of differentiation between a latté and a capuccino. read more

Great place for coffee and breakfast. They have many options, but I, being a creature of habit, have only ever gotten some sort of bagel option. Either sausage or bacon, egg and cheese, or with cream cheese. Coffee is good, and they have several varieties for those who don't prefer it non-flavored and black. Service is polite and prompt. Especially, once they get to know you. I have no complaints of anything I've ever eaten there. And for regular customers, they have coffee and sandwich cards, so every tenth coffee or sandwich is free. Would recommend to anyone wanting a reasonably priced, quick breakfast. read more

I really like Uptown Cafe. It's clean, convenient, service is friendly, and they offer all (or most) of their lunchtime offerings during breakfast, which I love, as I am not that much of a breakfast person in general. They have a good selection of sandwiches, wraps, paninis, bagels, coffee, etc. I've been here once and ordered the pesto mozzarella panini, which came with pesto, melted mozzarella and tomatoes on a very fresh bun. I really liked the turkey sandwich with avocado I got here - you select the toppings you want and they carve the meat off of the rotating turkey spit in front of you. After getting a container of fruit with it, it ended up being a little over $10 for lunch, but it was not a disappointment. On top of that the lady at the register was very rude to the ladies preparing the food. This is a nice small cafe (I think owned by Korean people - yay!) right off First Ave in Noma. They have a pretty large variety of sandwiches and drinks, and you don't get the same lines you do at the cafes/restaurants on First Ave. They also have some outdoor seating, which is nice. Try their bulgogi sandwich! I didn't try it myself - I just got a mint latte (which was superb, just what I needed to get me through Frida) - but it looks intriguing. Bulgogi is one of my favorite Korean foods so I will definitely be trying that later. The prices are pretty moderate and the lines are never too long. IS IT CHEAP? Moderately, yes. Better than West Wing Cafe and Starbucks in my opinion. read more

Good Food but poor attitude from owner! My job recently located to the NoMa area and I started frequenting this shop for breakfast and sometimes lunch. The ladies who take the orders and prepare the food are pleasant and cordial. However, I cannot say the same for the owner. I went in today and ordered a sandwich and when the cashier/owner told me it was ready I paid for the sandwich and left. Upon returning to my office, I realized that she gave me the wrong sandwich so I walked all the way back to get the correct sandwich. When I explained to the owner the reason for my return, she immediately became irritated and said that it was my fault because I told her to ring up the wrong sandwich. I explained again that I did not because I don't even eat reuben sandwiches and they are in no way similar to a ham and cheese panini press sandwiches. She become rude at this point and insisted that it was not her fault because she gave the sandwich that I asked for. This was despite the fact that the other lady who took my order had my sandwich there and knew right away why I had returned. Instead of her just acknowledging the mistake and giving me the sandwich that I had originally ordered, she opted to act in a very unprofessional way and insisted that she was right. The whole experience left a bad taste in my mouth and I will never patronize that shop again. This is no way to treat customers and I would highly suggest that she take lessons in the proper way to deal with customers. read more

The female owner was very rude and argumentative with me. She have been this way with other customers in the past. Today was my turn. She cussed me out in front of other customers because my food was not prepared the way I asked and paid for. She refused to have my sandwich remade, so when I asked for a refund, she threw it at me, money falling in between the items on the counter. Then she told me to never come back. It's 5-stars for what it is - a hole in the wall near NoMa metro... but I like hole in the wall joints, and somehow, they're especially good for breakfast. 1) It's inexpensive. My sandwich and drink was maybe $5 total and I ordered one of those fancy frappuccino-y drinks that usually is $7 in and of itself at Starbucks. My sandwich was bacon, egg and cheese on toast. 2) It's good food. They make it fresh when you order, so it's really delicious. 3) The service is good. Not spectacular, but good. Granted, it was slow when we went, but the service was very quick. All in all, I'll give a five star to delicious food when it's this cheap, even if service isn't necessarily a fiver. read more

I found this little gem while walking around the area because I forgot breakfast. Despite there being many customers, there was barely a line because the employees were so efficient. I ordered a coffee drink and breakfast sandwich. I think the coffee drinks are similarly priced as competing coffee shops in the area. They give you a great amount of egg on the sandwich! Went here for lunch and was impressed with the overall cleanliness and outdoor seating. The chicken noodle soup was delicious and we also enjoyed a toasted sandwich piled high with 3 different meats (the turkey was actually carved in front of our very own eyes!) If you want coffee, go down the street to Starbucks. But the sandwiches here have been uniformly awesome. I always come here if I'm in the area for lunch rather than taking my chances with one of the food trucks or chain places. It's way better than the sandwiches at Cafe Philips. The people here really seem to take pride in making the sandwiches good. I was waiting for my Reuben today (delicious) and was mesmerized watching the guy make an amazing looking club for someone else. Do not go here! The lady that works the cash register is the rudest person I've ever come across. Every time I go she rings me up, I pay and then she says she rang my order wrong and I owe more. They have limited outdoor seating which is nice especially in the warmer months like now. I gave the place three stars because the place is just "OK".
