a flight of beers on a wooden table

This brewery is hidden near an airport. The tap room itself was very small but had a good vibe. Almost like a lodge. There is a lot of outdoor seating, which can be great when the weather is nice but half the year is unusable. We got a flight of beer. Overall a nice place.

I'd never been to Upper Hand Brewery so when were in the area last fall with friends we decided to check it out. As of September 2021 there was no indoor seating available at all, but a nice area outside with some live music going on. There's also a lot more seating available towards the back of the building if you want a quieter atmosphere. Unfortunately no indoor restrooms were available but the port a potties were clean. I tried the Red Buck IPA which was smooth and tasty - I actually had two pints of it while we were there. I had a couple of sips of other beers but the Red Buck was my favorite. They don't have a food menu, but they offer a lot of packaged snacks like jerky sticks, cheese curds, chips, pretzels, etc. We got some smoked string cheese and pretzels for snacking which was great! I wish they had a food truck. One of my biggest pet peeves when it comes to breweries is when they don't offer flights. I like to be able to try several different options before choosing a pint to order, and I didn't want to hang around inside with lots of other people asking for tastes of each beer. I'm not sure if it was just a covid thing, but no flights were available when we were there. It's ok but something to note if you like getting flights too.

This place is actually a factor in my decision to drive from Chicago to Traverse City by heading north vs south. The north route does dictate an overnight in Escanaba, but the town and especially this brewery is such an awesome vibe! I usually see bartender Gary on my visits so say hello - he has great recommendations of their excellent beers, all of which are top notch- so it really depends on your tastes. One of my favorite breweries anywhere, and it's a place where I always meet the friendliest folks.

Good brewery with a nice outdoor seating area. They had a local band playing when we arrived. Bring your own food.

The poop fairy doesn't live here… scoop your poop!

Great to see something new come to Escanaba. We discovered it by accident and stopped to see what it was all about. It can be a little difficult to find - look for the signage - it's by the airport in a green metal building. Friendly staff, with a pleasant, but small outside patio. We sat outside and enjoyed a Yooper Ale. Patio seems to be pet friendly. Bring your own snacks - they only sell pretzels. We enjoyed ourselves so much we stopped before going out of town to buy two 6 packs to take home. Be sure to check their open hours before you go - we came back through the following week on a Tuesday and they were closed at 4:30.

Good beer and good people. We had a good conversation with the bartender and he directed us to a great place to camp that evening. I wish there was a kitchen but they sell some preztels and chips which were locally made.

No seating, no beer flights and very small indoor sitting area that fills up quick. Four standing tables.

We wanted to visit Escanaba to see a beach, at Ludington Park, and a view of Lake Michigan, more or less (of the bay). We wanted to find a nice, casual dining place for 5 adults and our five year old. My son looked online and suggested Hereford and Hops. They seemed to have a good variety of food and a location less than a mile from the park. When you walk in the sign asks you to wait to be seated. Our server greeted us and took us to our table. She took the beverage order and made sure the child beverage had a lid to it. The menu has a variety of options, including appetizers, dinner salads, pizza, pasta, and entrees and daily specials. It was Wednesday and the special was a half rack of BBQ ribs and a potato. They had fish and seafood options, and my wife and I chose breaded shrimp. My Daughter in law wanted the BLT with a side of in-house homemade potato chips and a dish of French onion dip. My granddaughter requested the children's burger and fries. All of the entrees came with a choice of garden or Caesar salad. I believe all of the dressing and sauces were made in-house. We also ordered fried cheese curds, with marinara, and potato skins. Once the order was placed, it felt like we were waiting for the appetizers for awhile. One son said, I hope they don't just bring everything at once. But the appetizers did arrive first and they were very good. The salad I ordered was the Caesar. It was chopped Romaine, shredded parmesan, and croutons. Our server said that the croutons were made in-house, and so was my wife's Ranch dressing, so I assume they made the Caesar dressing, too. The point is making items from scratch suggests either unique flavor or fresh quality. The croutons were toasted bread, the size of game dice, with no seasonings I could see or taste. The Caesar dressing lacked the tangy flavor of bottled dressing. My romaine lettuce was chopped okay but some of the ends were a little brown. I was glad I passed on the Chicken Caesar entree salad. My wife said her garden salad and ranch dressing was very good. It had other greens and no romaine. The entrees were all very good. The rib dinners were, reportedly, cooked perfectly. One person felt the sauce was perfect, the other said it tasted great but there was too much of it. My wife and I had breaded shrimp. Again, I assume they made the cocktail sauce in-house. And we both had the same reaction, which was it tasted great but somehow had no coating quality on the shrimp. I dipped mine and it came up looking like it was dripping tomato juice, but tasted great. My Daughter in law loved the BLT, and the taste of the homemade potato chips. She thought they were cut a little thick, but shared with everyone else, who thought they were fine. Everyone raved about the onion dip. We had a great meal, pleasant service, even if it felt a little slow at the start. I suggest you try H &H if you're in the mood for good food, casual atmosphere and reasonable prices.

The bartender was friendly. The only redeeming food star was my daughter's Chicken Alfredo. We all liked that! However the rest of the entrées were a let down. My son's penne pasta with chicken lacked pesto and chicken. My wife's Caesar salad was in her words, "nothing special." My Greek salad with lemon vinaigrette had no lemon flavor whatsoever. My chicken may have been trying to identify as croutons. Yikes! Everyone's chicken portions were so small I'm not sure if they were for a toddler or a really small bird. Most of the food was a letdown. Drinks mioght be considered a redeeming factor and encouraged my review to push from a 2 star to a 3 star: Blueberry Tart Lager - liked it, I'd order it again Manistique Lager - exactly what you'd expect in a Vienna Lager by BJCP style standards I just wasn't feelin' it. Hazy IPA - was lackluster like a dusty old surfboard Blood Orange Seltzer - my risk-it-for-the-biscuit choice ...oddly satisfying. It tasted a little like a creamsicle. My wife's blackberry cider was on point. Send it to us trolls down in the lower peninsula. Kids enjoyed "homemade" root beer. All in all, we spent around $90. I expected more for lunch at that price point especially from place where they claim everything is made from scratch except the BBQ sauce and Caesar dressing.
