As a Jamaican this place throws me back to instantly my aunts or grandmothers cooking and it was no surprise that Grandma was truly back there cooking. I truly think their order ahead options is the best. We also loved this place so much we actually ordered catering from them for our rehearsal dinner. I will say it's the best Jerk chicken I have had in Milwaukee hands down. Also their rice and peas were great. I think the plantains get dried out from the steam so it wasn't my favorite but still could be someone's cup of tea. The service truly is being treated like a family member as you walk in. Many complaints people have us wait time but that comes with fresh Jamaican food because it takes time to be prepared especially ox tail. Ok, I have read the bad reviews from the others. I can honestly say, I didn't experience anything that would have me give this place a bad review. Uppa Yard can get really busy, so I suggest if you're getting takeout. Call ahead and that will save you a lot of time. There is a bar area, if you would like a few cocktails. Or you can just be seated, after you place your order in the dining area. Portion sizes are very generous.. highly recommend trying this place out. Curry chicken- slight heat to this entree. A friend who lives in Milwaukee recommended this restaurant to see how I thought it would compare to the Jamaican cooking I grew up eating. That's always an unfair comparison for me to make. Any food coming from your grandparents' kitchen, your parents' kitchen, or your own is unfair to use as a litmus test against restaurant food. I ordered a curry chicken plate and a jerk chicken plate. While I think it's okay for what tasted like seasoned baked chicken, what would have kicked the flavor up several notches would have been if the chicken had been proper smoked. The rice and peas were good. The cabbage was more like slaw. They didn't have plantains and we went shortly after the restaurant had opened for business. I had wanted brown stew chicken. However, that was another dish they didn't have cooked, and it would have probably been perfect since brown stew chicken is baked or stewed. The restaurant seems to be quite busy. The Jamaican food at Uppa Yard was absolutely hot, fresh, & delicious!! It was so good I was doing my little happy dance as I'm savoring every bite lol!!! :) We got really great large portion sizes well worth the prices. I ordered the curry goat, curry oxtails with rice & peas with steamed cabbage. My husband ordered the jerk chicken with rice & peas/cabbage. He said his was super delicious also! My curry goat and oxtails were extremely tender and very nicely seasoned. You have to be careful with curry goat not to swallow any sharp bones or shards though. The only drawback is the place is so popular the wait was really long to get our food because we didn't call ahead of time or place an online order. I'm not sure if that would have helped or not but there was many orders ahead of us as it is more of a take out establishment but people can dine in there if they would like! They also had a little bar that looked liked they had some amazing drinks like a yummy Hennesy strawberry margarita and other really good looking drinks! The place is worth trying!!! I love jerk chicken and only last year started to make an effort to try the various Jamaican places around the greater Milwaukee area. I knew of Uppa Yard, but every time I would drive past the strip it's in it looked like it had permanently closed, which contradicted the reviews I kept seeing pop up. Eventually I looked close enough at their tiny sign outside and figured out they are open a couple of doors down from the location that looks closed. When I stopped I ordered a large jerk chicken dinner with rice & peas and plantains instead of cabbage. I also ordered one jerk chicken egg roll. The jerk chicken dinner was ok. I think both the jerk chicken and rice & peas from Pepper Pot Catering are much better. At least you get a lot for the price, which is good. The egg roll from Pepper Pot is larger, but it has more cabbage in it as filler compared to Uppa Yard's, which has more ingredients besides just cabbage. The egg roll stood out as the better of the two items I ordered. I placed my order at 4:48pm and didn't receive my food until 5:25pm. I was told 20 minutes when I ordered, which I was ok with, so waiting 37 minutes was annoying. They weren't dead, but they didn't look slammed either, so the wait seemed long for what I ordered. read more

Amazing. When the oxtail gravy soaks into the rice & beans something close to heaven is achieved. The rest of the food - jerk chicken, plantains, egg rolls, dessert cakes, are similar. All cooked to literal perfection - each item the right balance of spices, textures, moistures, and portions. It's been 5 minutes since I've left and I'm already anticipating my next visit. And judging by the bustling atmosphere it's clear I'm not the only one enchanted by the flavors. The vibe was that of a community hitting up a place that brings them consistent joy. You know it's good when every single person that walks through the door walks in complete comfort - the place is home. Food is ok I was shocked to see that the curry chicken order was only sm wings you wait for the longest time for your food and sometimes I do forget your order no organization they just take your money and you just stand there and wait hoping they don't forget. Regulars are treated much differently than the new patrons of the establishment. Every plate is different. OK, Question: did the owner of the Upper Yard (On Fon du Lac) sell to someone else? FRFR Because I have been going there for years, I have never experienced what I experience today. First, the food was not hot, and I waited 30-45mins. Second, the Chicken was DRY, and the Cabbage was not fresh. The only good thing was the lukewarm red beans and rice. As long as I have been going to this establishment, I have waited a long time for my food, but when I got it, it was always fresh, hot, and good. Today!! NO. So I want to know if it was sold to new people because if it is, I will not be revisiting the way this food was, and at these prices, it should have been hot, plentiful, and good. I couldn't finish. Haven't been to Uppa Yard since they moved to the bigger space down Fond du Lac. It's beautiful! Still not big enough for the line out the door :D The food: I almost always get the chicken combo - jerk chicken and curry chicken with rice and peas and cabbage. If you can make cabbage exciting, and the first thing that I finish eating...you've done good. The cabbage is well-cooked but not gummy. It's not really flavorful on its own but paired with the chicken (both the jerk chicken and the curry chicken) which is absolutely PACKED with flavor, it's a mellow addition. The jerk chicken is finger-lickin' delicious, full of spice but not spicy, and super moist. Even after microwaving! The curry chicken, again is full of spice but not spicy. The space: There are a few more tables (miss the booths!), and there's a bar located within the same space. It has more of a sports bar feel now that there are 4+ big screen TVs peppered around the perimeter of the restaurant. There's plenty of street parking around, but the spaces are often taken up by all the Uppa Yard customers! The biggest drawback of Uppa Yard is their absolute success which means there's a long wait when you go up to order. I didn't try calling ahead this time because previously, they didn't answer the phone and if they did, they wouldn't put in your order until you got there. If you just expect a 40 minute wait for your food, and make appropriate plans to wait, you won't be hangry. If there were a way to reliably call in an order or place an order online, I'm sure I'd come even more often! But honestly, the food is always worth the wait for me. Right now with the coronavirus restrictions, it's hard to hear the name of the person whose order is ready. With the acoustics in there, it might also be a problem without masking anyway. There's hand sanitizer at the door, and the employees are mostly wearing their masks, though there were a few masks that were hanging below the nose. read more

Service at the counter was very friendly and patient with us being first time customers. We got our food after a short wait and carried out! I've been here a few times. Granted, this has generally been after work between legs on my bus commute home, so please pardon me if it skews my impressions a little bit. I'm still a fan. The food is consistently good. Jamaican food is still kind of a novelty for me, but I've never known novelty to really make up for bad or inconsistent food or a poor service experience. Uppa Yard is solid. They seem to do mostly takeout business. The counter area tends to be crowded with people either waiting to order or waiting for their to-go boxes. But there's a small dining area with TV's, generally tuned to a Brewers game if there's one. The decor is bright. Containers are of the styrofoam variety. The people are nice and check your order before they give it to you to make sure it's right. I've only had the chicken dishes. There's an hour call-ahead time for the fish, and I haven't been in when any of the specials are available but again, that's my timing issue and not a problem with the restaurant. But what I've had was good. The jerk, curry, and brown stew chicken all have a pleasant kick but aren't overly spicy. I might be partial to the curry because the typical beans and rice that accompanies the dishes soaks up the sauce just right. Generally you get cabbage too, which is cooked with peppers and onions and seasoned, and definitely completes the meal. One time I was there and they were out of the beans and rice, so I just had the white rice and cabbage with my jerk chicken, and it was still tasty. Beware of the tiny bones. I typically get a large entree and have enough to take home. I'm still waiting for someone to invent a leak-resistant styrofoam container that will withstand shifting around in a plastic bag, but I'm not holding my breath. read more

When we finally got our food it was a total of two hours only to get home and realize they forgot our side of cabbage for one of the dinners and plantain for both dinners and gravy for one of the dinners. While wait times are expected, two hours and the amount of items forgotten is not acceptable. I agree with others that the workers are nice and apologetic. I ordered the jerk chicken platter with jerk chicken egg rolls which is new in the menu- they are fantastic. I will highly recommend. My coworkers rave about the food here, and one of them let me taste their goat curry that they brought in for dinner. I was sold. Yeah the neighborhood is a bit sketchy. You'll likely be waiting in line (I was there over half an hour), especially if you go at peak times. Forget about calling in, they don't answer the phone. They have seating, but, it appears everyone gets carry out. I was looking forward to getting oxtail stew, but they ran out. No surprise from what I hear. Haven't done a post in a while since pandemic but came to pupa yard because I was craving some well cooked Jamaican cuisine. I'm used to the delicious food that is served here daily but the new restaurant took me by surprise! It is a very beautiful upscale dining area that includes proper social distancing standards for dine in and drinking at the bar. Which has multiple cocktails and a delicious desert bar. I don't feel qualified enough to rate the authenticity of the Jamaican cuisine. I am however qualified to say when something is delicious. This qualifies as scrumptious, which I believe is in a category above delicious. The Oxtails were so good they literally melt in your mouth and I know people use that term all the time. Met a friend for lunch Tuesday. Google says they open at 11:00, but they actually open at 11:30-ish. When we visited, they opened 5-10 minutes late. This is your typical "hole-in-the-wall," dingy looking restaurant where you expect to get great ethnic food. We ordered the small Jerk Chicken ($9) and the small Brown Stew Chicken ($9). Both come with sides of cabbage and red beans and rice. We wanted to add a side of plantains, but they said they were out. We were told the Brown Stew Chicken would take 20 minutes to cook, and we were fine with that. We figured we'd share the Jerk Chicken when it was ready and share the Brown Stew Chicken later. Nope, about 35-40 minutes later, our order of both dishes was ready. We watched customer after customer get there food and leave. I guess none of those 10 or so customers ordered Brown Stew Chicken, or they got ours. Despite the slower than expected service, the food was good and I felt the prices were fair. Large orders of the dishes we ordered were $11, and that probably is the best value. Although I don't know how much more comes in a large size. The Jerk Chicken was very mild. We were hoping for SOME heat. They served it with a side of sauce that was also mild, but had a great flavor to it. So don't expect legit spicy Jerk Chicken here, but you can expect good flavor. The Brown Stew Chicken tasted better than the Jerk Chicken. I ordered this based on recommendations from the diners who posted on their Facebook page, and I'm telling you now. The gravy on the Brown Stew Chicken is delicious! They pour some of it over the red beans and rice, which makes the rice taste better than the rice served with the Jerk Chicken. My friend ordered Ginger Beer. I just had a Sprite. The top of the can was dirty and they don't have cups, so ask for a straw. I'm giving 4 stars because the flavor and value of the food warrants it.
