3.75/5 I have to give the disclaimer that I am Jamaican so this review is likely more picky. Overall, I will say the service here was really good in a Saturday night but there was not a huge crowd. They made sure we were well taken care of and my friends enjoyed the drinks. As for the overall food it wasn't my mom's kitchen but it was still solid. I do wish there cabbage had some more flavor and that jerk chicken had more of Smokey flavor that you get from true roadside chicken. Overall for Milwaukee I think this place is worth a try to see if it fits your tastebuds. read more

I visited Pepperpot when I was walking by and noticed they were a new addition to the neighborhood since I had last passed through. It was a Friday night but I was the only dine-in customer when I first walked in. Later a few more came in and there was a steady stream of takeout customers. The building is very spacious and has room for plenty during busy periods. The staff was really nice, even when some unrulier customers came in. They checked in on me and brought me a box right away "just in case" when I could tell I would be taking some food home. The portions are huge. I had to try their jerk egg rolls and I wanted curry chicken but they were out of curry so I got jerk chicken instead. The jerk seasoning was really infused into the chicken skin and they brought out more jerk sauce. My meal came with rice and beans and braised cabbage--I almost wanted more of those in proportion to the meat. The egg rolls were similarly large and were accompanied by sweet chili sauce. I only ate one of my two to save room for my entree and took the other one home. One quirk to keep in mind is there's an automatic 18% gratuity for all dine-in orders, even for one person. There were signs everywhere but I still almost forgot when I got the bill. There's a bar and there seems to be entertainment for the bar crowd as well. I found out from a friend that this place hosts karaoke on Wednesday nights. So, I decided to come through. AMBIANCE: The place is very spacious. There's a lot of seating and it's good for a small group setting (4 people). The set up is very chill. You walk in and seat yourself. FOOD: The food was amazing. The Rasta pasta was really flavorful. The serving is HUGE. I had to take a to-go. The pasta quickly became my lunch for the next day. The chicken was well seasoned and the pasta wasn't too oily. The beef patties were good. The meat is nicely packed inside. If I had anything to complain about, it would be that the dough was over fried in my opinion. I like a softer dough when I bite into things. The margarita was a nice addition. The price was $10.40. However, the glass is huge and the drink is strong. read more

Went for the first time recently, and it was an energetic Wednesday night. They have a live DJ and mini small business market on Wednesday evenings, so it was noisier than usual, but also good energy. We started with the Jerk Cheese Curds, which were not spicy as you might expect from the word "jerk," but the seasoning was visible and noticeable on the palate. The batter to cheese ratio was great, allowing the cheese to be the star, and for the most part, they were not greasy. Highly recommend! The beef patties were good, but the pastry shell was too dense with minimal ground beef filling, so they needed sauce to add some flavor and make it easier to eat and swallow. They come with a ranch sauce, but the sweet chili sauce that came with the cheese curds and the oxtail gravy were better options to dip the beef patties in. The Nuff Curry with chicken was tender and had nice flavor. My friend ordered the coconut mashed potatoes as her side dish, and they were AMAZING! They were so creamy and delicious! The Oxtail was really good, and the red beans and rice were fine but on the dry side, so I recommend getting the coconut mashed potatoes as your side or ask for extra oxtail gravy for the red beans and rice. They were out of plantains, so we didn't get to try the sweet fried plantains, and there wasn't dessert options. Overall, I liked the food and the great service we received were enough to go back again. It is definitely worth a visit. read more

This spot is a Milwaukee gem. We came here for a quick bite to go but ended up staying due to the ambiance. The service was top notch.. Let me tell you, the jerk chicken egg rolls are a winner!!! So tasty and hot. It's a must try. We also had the rum punch which was nice and strong. I will definitely come back to try the other authentic Jamaican dishes. This evening we decided to walk to Pepperpot for dinner. My significant other has been wanting to go there for a bit since we live just a few blocks away. Just a point to share, I am first generation American Jamaican. My father immigrated here in the 70s and I was born shortly after. I love Jamaican food. I cook it (occasionally) so it is hard for me to go out and eat it. But, I do not cook ox tail. I just have never loved it and find no reason to cook it. Unfortunately, he loves ox tail. So off we went. When we arrived the restaurant was pretty empty, with a DJ playing relatively good music. The music was 90's R&B. It was a bit louder than what I appreciate but I am over 50 and choose to protect my hearing. We sat ourselves as no one greeted us and we didn't know what else to do. Once seated a young man came and provided water for us. My significant other likes lemon in his water and requested that. He was informed that there was no lemon but there was lime. We agreed to lime and they came a bit old but still squeezable. We ordered patties and were told that they were all out. I frowned and the server said that he will check to see if there were anymore. He returned and said that there was one order remaining. We accepted. We also ordered jerk chicken egg rolls. Both arrived and the patties were clearly not fresh. The egg rolls were good but not great. My s/o ordered ox tails and they arrived shortly after. He said they were good and hot. We both had rum punch and it was also good. I wish the ambiance had been relaxing and appropriate for an adult crowd. I did receive the owners information after asking was he in the building. When the check arrived it seemed a bit high but I quickly paid it. After I sent my credit card information in, I realized that the tip was included in my total! I had tipped on top of that! I requested a supervisor to refund the overage and was told that she was not available. After several minutes of waiting we left. Biggest tip I can give is to double check your bill. Best Jamaican egg rolls around . But you gotta come to their spot on N 42nd + Capitol Dr, the restaurant doesn't make the egg rolls the same. They are at least double the size of a traditional egg roll stuffed with Jamaican jerk chicken , cabbage, and more. They are delicious. Haven't tried the oxtail yet but they sell a lot of it. Get the cheese curds. I love the texture. Egg Rolls trap and pool a lot of grease in the folds but have an amazing crisp. Soak up the oil with a paper towel beforehand. Still worth it. Ox Tail and Nuff curry are good. Add their jerk sauce and ranch to them for extra flavor and seasoning. read more

Because this place is across the street from my barber shop, I walk by it every week, so 3 weeks I decided to show up. Apparently I was interrupting the woman at the counter, who was on her phone. She looked annoyed that I was interrupting her, as I had stood there at the desk for 5 minutes, hoping to be seated. She looked up at me and said sit anywhere. Then she returned to her phone call. Red Flag #1. About 10 minutes after I seated myself a guy brought a glass of water and the menu and walked away without asking if I wanted anything other than water to drink. Red Flag #2. Then about 15 minutes later asked if I knew what I wanted to eat, and I told him and I also said I wanted a Coke. He returned with the Oxtails about 20 minutes later, and no Coke. I asked about the coke, he said ok. I ate the entire meal. I have had oxtails many times in my life. The oxtails here were more bone than meat. The rice and gravy were good but rice and gravy wasn't what I was hoping to eat. I wanted beef patties to go, and he said they were out. He said Beef patties were a best seller here because they always run out. I asked about my drink. He said ok. I wanted about 15 minutes before he returned with my bill. No coke, but it was on the bill. I had to have it removed. By the way, I was at the black arts fest yesterday here in Milwaukee and they has beef patties. A week ago I was at the dollar store and I happened to see some beef patties there and I ordered them. They were BETTER than the beef patties I got yesterday at Pepperpot! Went on a Tuesday afternoon very nice setting. They really did a good job and atmosphere is inviting. Place my order for a jerk chicken and curry shrimp bowl both come with rice and cabbage food was just ok. cabbage horrible bland no flavor and rice beans same bland no flavor . The jerk chicken was ok but overall, don't think I will be back . I have had pepperpot before and the curry shrimp was great. What I got was a little watery and not that flavorful, And as with every place in the Midwest they could work on portions. With inflation and the cost of thing now I will spend my money else where for the time being but may give another chance later down the road read more
