Having worked with hundreds of doctors over the years, both professionally and personally, I can tell you that you do not want to go for the warm and fuzzy doctor. You want the expert. Too often, though not always, the doctors with good "bedside manner" are compensating for a lack of expertise. When it comes to medical care, you don't need nice; you need smart. I promise. Lisa Rosenberg at University Eye Specialists is perfectly pleasant and personable. But she is busy. She is not going to sit down and chit chat with you. And you may wait a long time because she gets a lot of emergent, complicated cases. But you will get the best medical care for your eyes that you can get in the city and far beyond. I wait a long time most times I go. Every time, I get irritated. Then I take deep breaths and it passes. I saw Dr. Rosenberg for my regular eye check-up. Once again, I had a wonderful experience from beginning to end. I seriously do not know what happened with the patients writing such negative reviews. Luckily, I have only experienced wonderful care from the doctor and her staff. The woman who assisted me at the front desk was very welcoming and friendly. She checked me right in and the man took me back right away. No delays whatsoever. While giving me the full eye exam, the man was so warm and gracious. He was personable yet professional. I felt his testing was very thorough. I waited only a couple of minutes to be seen by my doctor. She greeted me warmly, was familiar with her notes from my last visit one and a half years ago. We went over my family history, and she gave me her detailed opinion on everything. I felt very cared for and felt I was in very competent hands. The business itself, is clean and organized. The front desk area is open and cheerful. It feels so much warmer than a big doctor's office at the hospital. I don't need glasses to see but have an issue with lights, so I was also able to get a tint that helped that. Brought in an old pair of glasses and got the new tinted lenses. While on a recent trip to NY my eyesight got really blurry 3 times. During the 3rd time I figured I better call a doc to make sure I wasn't going blind. First I called my OBGYN because I've decided that anything that's wrong with me these days must be a sign of pregnancy. However, the physician assistant assured me that blurry vision is NOT a symptom of pregnancy and I should probably call me internist. And then yet another physician assistant at my internist told me the doctor to call was probably my eye doctor. So that's how I found myself back at Dr Yang's office 4 years later. After a 40 min wait (ugh) I saw a super nice assistant who told me I'm pretty much blind (been so since I was 10) and I should probably wear contacts or glasses. I explained that my eyes don't like contacts and my vanity doesn't like glasses, but I do wear them for safety reasons when I drive. It's also kind of nice being able to ignore people I don't like on the streets by using the blind excuse. No contacts/glasses for me! The assistant was very thorough and then after another wait (this one much shorter) I saw the one and only Dr Yang. Dr Yang was very pleasant, asked me many questions, examined my eyes and said he couldn't find anything wrong (besides my very poor eyesight). Weeks later I haven't had additional 'blurry vision" episodes so I think it may have been a symptom of an awful sinus infection I came down with a few days later, but regardless it was nice to get checked out. read more

I had an appointment with Dr. Lisa Rosenberg because a friend referred me. I had to wait 6 months to see her once I was ill and had to cancel and than she had a medical issue so finally saw her. NOT WORTH THE WAIT. I spent an hour and a half with a very professional and polite and caring assistant probably getting paid $40,000/year. She did every test possible on my eyes which I'm used to having the doctor perform. I guess it's beneath Dr. Rosenberg and can't bill enough so she gives it to her low paid employees. Sherry could not have been nicer or more thorough but disappointed Dr. Rosenberg didn't perform these duties as ALL MY OTHER EYE DOCTORS have done in the past! Again at University Eye Specialists they have to pay for that fancy office. Rosenberg never introduced herself or apologized for the wait. I waited or went through the tests for an hour and a half and waited another 20 minutes for Rosenberg . She gave another physician assistant the results after she HURRIEDLY FLASHED LIGHTS in my eyes never once telling me what she was doing as other eye doctors have done with me. Never gave me a synopsis of eye health just said her assistant would tell me how to help me with my itchiness of my eyes. She had already repeated it several times that day so the assistant would educate me on what to do. WOW! Rosenberg Said you can see me in 2 years. I tried to ask her questions but SHE WAS LITERALLY RUNNING OUT the door. I was there for 2 hours with her seeing me 15 minutes if that. She made me so nervous not wanting to stay I forgot all the questions I wanted to ask. What do you think they will charge me a HUGE BILL PROBABLY!!!! When I asked because I had to pay an extra $60.00 to check my prescription she said "oh you have to talk to my optometrist!!!!!!!" So why did I pay that extra $60.00 when I was never told the results except by Sherry who was lovely but not a doctor. Now I don't know IF I SHOULD get new contacts!!!!! Of course Lisa added you should get new contacts every 15-18 months. NEVER NEVER HAVE I BEEN TOLD this by any other eye doctor. But as I said UNIVERSITY EYE SPECIALISTS HAS TO PAY FOR THAT HUGE EXPENSIVE OFFICE WITH ALL THOSE ASSISTANTS. They even have an eye glass display in the office another stream of revenue. When you make your appointment, make sure you have the day off because you're gonna' be there for HOURS! It doesn't matter if you're the first appointment of the day, you'll be there for HOURS. Make sure the person with you has the day off because he/she will there for HOURS. In four appointments, I was forced to sit in just the waiting rooms alone for over EIGHT HOURS. Note that I am not including testing and the actual doctor visit. I was able to see the appointment calendar on my last visit, and the office has so over-scheduled patients, the doctors are limited to five minutes per patient. Do the math, that's thirty patients per hour. It is nothing less than abusive the way patients are treated at University Eye Specialists, and it is particularly apparent on the scowling faces of those that work there. Avoid this place like the plague unless you want a billing nightmare! My primary physician recommended Dr. Rosenberg as a new eye doctor for my annual eye exam. The location was convenient and I've always liked all the doctors and staff I've met at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. I was able to get an appointment very quickly. I thought I was the first appointment of the day but had to wait a while to be seen. The waiting room was modern and spacious. Once called, the opthamology assistants worked pretty quickly. The eye exam itself seemed very routine. The Dr. Rosenberg came across as very competent and helpful. Overall, I wasn't blown away by the office and staff but up to that point, there was nothing to prevent me from recommending to others or scheduling there in the future. Until...the billing problems started. Never in my life have I had a billing problem with a doctor's office until now. They kept sending me invoices for a test that my health insurance should cover. I called, left half a dozen messages with two different people, and finally talked to one staff member who said blandly that they would "send something in." That was last summer. Still, the bills kept coming and my phone messages went unreturned. My health insurance company is baffled - they can't help because they haven't received any follow up paperwork since June. It got to the point where I thought the unpaid bill was about to affect my credit report so I decided to pay it. Sent the check in and confirmed with them over the phone that they cashed it - that was THREE WEEKS AGO and still the check hasn't been cashed. Wow. If you value your time and money, do not go here. I repeat . Whatever you do- do NOT go here. I have been to both offices- both downtown and up north in Northbrook. Both times, I was treated incredibly rudely by the secretaries. A quick story. My brother and I had appointments at 1:00 and 1:30. Mine was at 1:30. Because of work, I had to switch with my brother. I called up and told them this, and they said it was no problem. I asked if they were running late because I couldn't miss work. They said they were running on time. I got there at 12:55. I waited till 1:15 before going up to the RUDE secretary. She told me that they would see me momentarily. At one thirty i went up and complained. The same rude girl told me that my appointment was at 1:30 and my brother's was at 1. That would be fine, except for they told me we could switch. they also NEVER CALLED HIS NAME!!!! they lied to me!!! I was just there to get a new pair of contacts. They ended up trying to dialate my eyes, even though they just did that last week. Then the doctor (Yang) Finally came in and didn't even know who i was, even though I just saw him last week. He gave me a pair of trial contacts that were the same prescription that I had a year ago. They were not the better prescription that i needed. I'm done dealing with them. I'm going to another eye doctor. This eye doctor and the whole office is a disaster. They don't know what they are doing and they are rude in the process. I saw Dr. Yang here and another Dr who I believe was a resident. I've had an eye condition I've been trying to get figured out and properly treated for over a year now. After spending over 2 hours there. 45 minutes of which were purely waiting around. I didn't come out with a clear answer. I found the resident to be very competent while Dr Yang I found to be the opposite. When he first came in he looked at my chart and then asked "Is your eye red today?" He is an EYE doctor. It wasn't a joke either. He just didn't take the time to look at my eye before blurting out that jem of a question. Then later on he was questioning me about wearing disposable contact lenses and asked if it was expensive. I told him they are about 50.00 a month to which he replied (again not a joke...) that could be up to 250 a year. Excuse me doctor but you are an idiot. 50 X 12 is 600.00 not 250. Also his nurse had an attitude problem. After waiting 45 mins in my room for Dr Yang to come in (when he said he'd be back in 10-15) I asked the front desk if he would be in soon. I could hear here saying "we were just in there" very snottily to the front desk guy who asked for me. Anyway, because I do no want to keep seeing different doctors for the same thing I will stick with him for now... ...update one month later eye is still the same and just got a $300.00 bill in the mail ...update 2: The claim to my insurance is still pending so they billed me illegally...then refused to send my medical records to my new doc at rosin (who I love) untill I paid which is also highly illegal. They are threatening to send me to collections, but my insurance says they have no basis to do that since the claim is still pending. They are cheats and liars who actually make the insurance company look like the good guys! Stay away from them. My doctor is Dr. Yang. I have been going to these guys for about 6 years since I have en eye condition that requires routine checkups and sometimes emergency visits. Dr. Yang is a very personable guy and he doesn't try to overprescribe you. (which I appreciate). I have to say their emergency protocols are very very good. I had a eye problem over the weekend, the emergency doctor (usually a resident) was able to see me that day...but this kinda stuff has to be an emergency. The negatives? Wait times can be a hassle..you usually have to wait for an assistant (a resident) wait again for the doctor. But I think that is a small hassle for quality service. I have bought several pairs of glasses from their shop and they have very good technicians. Although the last pair of glasses I got had the wrong curve..they corrected it pretty quickly and gave me a discount. Just a note, they moved from their old location on the 3rd floor to the 15th floor. Same building though. read more

This was my second experience and eye emergency with University Eye Specialists at Northwestern Medicine in Chicago and on both occasions they were very accommodating and incredibly helpful. On my most recent visit I noticed that my right eyelid was completely inflamed and swelling. Dr. Yang did a thorough assessment and informed me that I had a Stye which is caused by bacterial infection of the gland at the base of an eyelash that was also very infected. Dr. Yang and Megan O'Shea the Clinical Supervisor and Technician were very helpful and talked to me about all of my options and answered all of my questions. They were both extremely professional, courteous and calming. University Eye Specialists at Northwestern Medicine specialize in unique and critical eye issues and emergencies and I would recommend them to anyone dealing with one of these critical situations. My One Star Reviews has to do with the competency of lisa rosenberg with whom I had an Awful experience. I had a cataract that she removed and placed the wrong lens in my eye making me extremely nearsighted in that I could now only see four (4) inches away from my eye making everything further away: BLURRY. When I discussed this with her, my supposed eye doctor, her response was specifically, "I cannot help you as your expectations are too high." After ruining my vision and telling me this, she did acquiesce and offered me a $500 discount on a pair of glasses of which: I Had Never Needed Glasses. In my attempts to corroborate this horrible miscalculation, I contacted four doctors who all agreed that rosenberg had placed the wrong lens into my eye. WITH NO REMORSE, rosenberg next wrote me a letter telling me that she could no longer treat me. AWFUL!!! I subsequently visited the Kraff Eye Institute and under the care of Dr. Colman Kraff, now have my vision restored to 20/20 vision. 312-444-1111 is the office number and they are the nicest and most competent people that I have ever worked with and note: rosenberg ruined my vision! and KRAFF EYE INSTITUTE SAVED MY VISION!! Dr. Ruderman is TERRIBLE !!! YES, TERRIBLE !!!! Just because of him I can't give higher rating... HIS VERY UNPROFESSIONAL!!!! Yelp doesn't let me give him 0 stars but 0 stars for Dr. Ruderman, ZERO!!!! Dr. Ruderman saw me because my Dr was not able to make it on that day. He looked very mad and he was so rude, like if he didn't want to be there. Didn't even answer my questions and he just left. This review is for the Optical Center at University Eye Specialists. I got my eyeglass prescription elsewhere, but that store didn't have as good a selection. How difficult is it to find a frame at the intersection of trendy and formal? Very, apparently! At least, that was the case for my face after visiting no less than six optical stores in the Loop. I ended up deciding that a specific Armani frame was the answer and University Eye Specialists was the only store that carried this model. As it turned out, this frame was good but this store had even better options. After 45 minutes of pairwise comparisons between seven frames across three brands (what can I say? I blame their wide selection), Beth who runs the store helped me closelist the final two. How did I decide between the two? I actually considered flipping a coin, but I polled a couple of people in the store for their opinion instead. That's right! I outsourced the selection process. In any case, I found the ideal frame. Beth was extremely helpful all through the process, and their prices were lower than some of the other stores I visited. read more

I'm really disappointed with my experience at University Eye Specialists. I arrived at 10:29 (for my 10:30 appointment) and didn't see the tech assistant or doctor until 12:30pm (TWO HOURS DURING A PANDEMIC). I asked the receptionist multiple times if I would be seen soon and she replied that they were short-staffed and running behind. During a pandemic, I would've expected a call so I wasn't sitting in a waiting room with 8+ people waiting to be seen. It's an overwhelming time for everyone and to have to worry about being exposed is unneeded stress. Additionally, NOT ONE person apologized for being behind. Overall, I'm really upset with having to expose myself (and family) and for the staff not taking the precautionary measures they should be taking in the event they are running behind. read more

No accountability that is the best way to describe University Eye Specialist. This complaint is not towards Dr. Yang, It's with the manager at the downtown office: I had a very heated discussion with the manager at University Eye Specialist today. When I shared with her "Beth" how my prescription for my eyeglasses were wrong even though I've been to their office twice, the prescription was changed and the Lenses were changed twice. She had a "Could care less attitude" from the very begining of the phone conversation. Beth had her mind made up when she first addressed me on the phone that there was nothing that they were going to do about it even though I complained 4 times including 2 faxes, that I could not see out of the prescriptions for my glasses (I even complained to Sears, when I got the glasses back both times, and they repeatedly said that's how the prescription was written. They even asked their office to fax over a copy of the prescription to make absolutely sure that the prescription was correct) that had been changed twice she never offered me a apology she told me that was nothing that they can do. She came on like a real ahole. She blames everyone else except for her office for the problem she blamed me, she blamed Sears for making the glasses, but the bottom line is they wrote the prescription. My new eye doctor looked at their prescription and said it was wrong and Beth admitted that it was off a little compared to my new prescription. How much more evidence do you need? I understand that everyone makes mistakes I've been going to this office for a while. I like Dr. Yang never really had a problem until now. It was obvious that the problem was their office's error; I went somewhere else to have my prescription and my eyes checked and the new glasses are completely correct and when compared to what University Eye Specialist gave me, their prescription was wrong by Beth's the manager's own admission. It is because of her I will never go to this office again. Like I said everyone makes mistakes and I was willing to forgive and forget I just wanted to bring to their attention that my prescription was wrong and that this was a $286.28 mistake that I could not afford (the cost of new glasses, that were never used) but her funky attitude took it there so I will never come to there office again. Anyone who wants their glass done correctly the first time, I highly recommend that you go to the Illinois Eye Institute at 3241 S. Michigan Ave., Chicago, IL 60616 telephone number 312-949-7331. On my first visit I spent about two to three hours at the Illinois Eye Institute having my first eye examination, they were very thorough and professional . When I got my glasses back they were 110% correct! Because of my insurance it took me a longer time to get my glasses but when I got them they were well worth the wait, spot on! Everybody at this office was very kind respectful and professional, nothing like what I experienced with Beth today! Like I said I would never go back to this office again but if you do go, go at your own risk! DON'T GO HERE !!! Dr. Yang was my doctor and 98% of the time you will see various assistants (and they are not necessarily medical students). But that's not the issue. I went to get multi-focal hard contact lenses and after 8 different pairs, none of them ever fit right and I couldn't see properly from any of them. Dr. Yang tried to make me feel that it was my fault, that I need to get "use" to the contacts. Well, one pair I wore for 3 weeks, 15 hrs. per day and at the end of that time, it changed the shape of my eyeballs because the lenses were too tight, extremely dry and my vision without the lenses changed for the worse. It took several weeks wearing my old contacts (purchased in NYC) for my eyeballs to get back to its previous shape. Dr. Yang lost patience even though it was HIS inability to get the contacts fitted properly and he finally said, I don't know what you want!!!! All I wanted was to be fitted properly for hard contact lenses!!! Thank goodness I didn't have to pay for the 8 pairs of contacts that never fit. I might have to fly to NYC to go back to my previous contact lens specialist who has fitted me with hard lenses for over 30 years. My husband also got examined by Dr. Yang and refracted for an eyeglass prescription. He took the prescription to Costco to have new lenses ordered for his old frames... when the glasses came in, he couldn't see properly! Luckily Costco is fantastic and they refunded him for the full amount. He went back to Dr. Yang to verify the prescription and found that they had written it incorrectly!!! They reversed the left eye and the right eye. And this office is in the business of Ophthalmology !?!??! read more

Dr. Lisa Rosenberg's arrogance overrode any technical competence she might have as an ophthalmologist. I have to stipulate that I did not personally receive service from Dr. Rosenberg, but I'm a volunteer aide who accompanied a woman in her 90's to all her appointments with Dr. Rosenberg, and I stayed with the patient throughout every facet of her treatment. First, the patient received a bill from Dr. Rosenberg when the Doctor moved from one location to another. The bill was for "the transfer of records." The patient did not pay this fee. Nevertheless, her records did eventually arrive at Dr. Rosenberg's new office. The patient was being treated for early stage macular degeneration. Dr. Rosenberg had prescribed the usual eye drops. The patient slipped a bit in taking the eye drops during the period she was having daily chemotherapy for cancer. When she did get to her next appointment with Dr. Rosenberg, there was a long wait to see the Doctor, a hardship for someone in her middle-90's. Then when the Doctor finally appeared, she really took the patient to task for not being totally consistent in taking the drops. Dr. Rosenberg said her time was extremely valuable. She said the patient was lucky to have her, the Head of the Department, treating her, and she demanded absolute compliance in the future. Dr. Rosenberg didn't seem to know or care that the patient had been preoccupied having chemotherapy and radiation treatments for what proved to be terminal cancer. She treated the patient dismissively and rudely. This was a bit ago, so I'm not sure this still pertains, but I think Dr. Rosenberg's attitude was summed up by the painting she had hung in her office at that time. It was an abstract, but it clearly suggested a needle stabbing into an eye - something horrible to contemplate during the long waits the patient endured. read more

I have come here a couple of times over the years on recommendation for Dr Ruderman and I am desperate for a new recommendation. Every single time I come for my appointment (on time) they make me wait for at least 45 minutes before being shuffled to a tech and then finally a doctor. The front desk staff is incredibly rude and the techs are not much better. Dr Ruderman and Dr Yang are both just fine once you finally get to them but the 2 hours it takes to get to that point isn't worth it. Just like everyone in this office I also have a job that is not easy to be away from for 3 hours unnecessarily. This is a prime example of physicians having zero ability to understand that their patients are their clients and how to run a business. Woe - I am glad I didn't see yelp before I went there. I probably wouldn't have gone! I had a great experience with them. I had an eye injury, and they were the only practice who could fit me in (I called about 5 different ophthalmologists). I saw Dr. Cervantes who was really nice, patient, and probably the only doctor I've seen in the last year who doesn't run out the door as the consult is barely over. He answered everything I asked & I thought he was great. The wait was 20-30 min past my appointment time, which I honestly consider normal for a large practice. There were about 15 people in the waiting room. I saw a nurse (or physician assistant?) first who checked my eye, put in the yellow stain, and then put in a drop to dilate it. Normally, I hate this - but it doesn't bother me as much if I pull my lower lid down and make a pocket for the drop, and she let me do that (instead of most eye doctors who plop these drops right on your pupil). She gave me her opinions - and I found her & everyone else very nice and polite (not sure why everyone thought the staff was so rude...maybe it's improved?). After my eyes were dilated, I waited about 20-30 min to see Dr. Cervantes. His exam was about 20 min or so, and he answered everything I wanted to ask - even some questions I have been putting off for a year because I felt like I was being a baby about it (eye dryness). My appointment wasn't even about eye dryness, but we still discussed it & I can follow up with him later once my injury is resolved. He explained the treatment in detail (and why he wanted to do it), and reassured me that things were not too bad and should turn out okay. I left by checking out with the secretary for my co-pay - and somehow they had my insurance from 10 years ago which was crazy. Anyway, we fixed that - and that was it. If I get some weird bill (per the reviews below) I'll update this - but I really thought I had a good experience there (minus the waiting, but I have physician relatives so I know how it can get.) Update - My eye is better and the bill was accurate (just the co-pay as expected). In retrospect, the only downside to this place was the extensive waiting...so set aside more time than you think you need. read more

I concur with the recommendations to stay away. After seeing Dr. Krupin for years, I was referred to a new doctor there. The new doctor was unfriendly and brusque. The staff at check-out was abrupt and rude when I inquired about the $50 fee for a glasses/contact script. It was unpleasant all around and I will never go back. read more

This practice is absolutely FANTASTIC! I had to get a cyst removed on my eyelid and Dr. Yang and Megan his assistant were so friendly and thorough hat it couldn't have been a better procedure. They explained the process for removal, and were very accommodating to my request to check with my insurance company regarding coverage before proceeding with the procedure. The procedure itself took less than 10 minutes and I feel terrific! I give them the highest recommendation from the friendliness of their staff, to the manner of the doctor to the effectiveness of the procedure. read more

This group is the worst. They are unresponsive and only really care about how much they can bill your insurance company. It's assembly line patient care. Also, the optician in the practice is over priced and does not stand behind her work. I had a pair of glasses made, they were the wrong prescription (fault of the Dr.) and they would not stand behind them. STAY AWAY read more
