I came to town with a worsening eye infection that I got visiting a fancy spa a week before I flew out. My friend credits Dr. Joseph Garber with saving her vision when she came back from vacation with a detatched retina, so she called to see if I could get in for an emergency appointment. Thank God they got me in within a few hours, to see Dr. Gina Rogers. When I arrived, reception was warm, & I was called back to a room quickly. Nora numbed my affected eye to gently measure my eye pressure, gave me a vision test, and then documented my detailed optical history, symptoms, and pharmacy to call in prescriptions. Dr. Rogers came in shortly after. She was warm & compassionate as she thoroughly looked in both eyes. She prescribed me 3 different things, to be thorough. By the next day, I was feeling much better. I am so grateful to the very warm team who got me in so quickly! I am so grateful to Dr. Rogers for letting me squeeze into her schedule when I was so miserable. My friend has recommended this practice to others for years. After my emergency visit, I saw why. I highly recommend too! read more

I've been referred here by my primary care physician for issues. After a few visits, I can say wholeheartedly Dr. Rogers is a gem & I couldn't be happier being a patient! While I don't have any vision problems, it's always been the random issue that's cropped up. Dr. Rogers has always been able to help & get me back to 100%. I also appreciate her patient education on best practices for caring for your eyes. I don't like having to schedule an appointment but I know I'm going to receive the best care possible for what life throws at me here. Staff is friendly & extremely helpful. This office does not take Blue Cross Community Health Plans. Even though the office that I signed up with said Herst was part of the Community Health plan, they are not. This is a private facility that can deny patients for any reason. Support other doctor's that accept Community Health Plans instead of these snobs. read more

MUBARAK ALI PATEL; CHICAGO, ILLINOIS 09/14/2024 I had extreme 'Red Eye problem' in my 'Right Eye' from last 2 months. I was feeling unconfortable due to itching in the eye, burning sensation and my pupil were also itching with pain in corners of both eyes. I took appointment of Dr. Joseph Garber M.D. at Eye Physicians & Surgeons of Chicago to check my Eyes health. Dr. Joseph Garber checked my eyes and presribed Laboratory Blood Test and also prscribed tablets 'Indomethazone'. In my next visit after a week he checked my eyes again and prescribed 'Prednisone' tablets. To my utter surpise and relief after 2 days my Eyes started coming back to normal color with all itching, burning and pain in the eyes gone. My thanks to Dr. Joseph Garber M.D., for taking good care of my eye health since I had Retina Detachment and umteen Retinal Tears in my both eyes and I was afraid. Before I could finish explaining my situation, she abruptly stood up and said, as she rushed out of the room and INTO THE HALL, "I'm busy and have other patients. You don't need to come back.". Earliest available appointment was a 5 month wait, though I called several times to check on wait list and spoke to their triage folks several times about my concerns and immediate needs. And I had a referral from one of their partners. Never even received a confirmatio n for the appointment I had. When I canceled after finding someone much more responsive (though not as convenient), they could care less about my feedback. I needed cataract surgery and I tried two other offices. Both of the other practices were very unprofessionaI. I'm very pleased with Eye Surgeons of Chicago, they were a pleasant surprise after the first 2! They were the only office that requested approval from my MD (I have serious health issues). I'm amazed that the other 2 didn't ask for me to get a pre-op checkup and I felt much better doing so. Dr. Brian Herst is very knowledgeable and patient. My case was complicated due to me having eye surgery in both eyes 30 yrs ago. The entire team was very professional and thorough. They were kind, caring, patient and respectfuI. I wish I could remember the Anesthesiologist's name because he was terrific too! Even the office manager was pleasant and helpful. I've had 18 major surgeries and I can tell the difference between ok healthcare and excellent healthcare. This doctor's office is a scam. I went to them with a specific referral from the emergency room in the same hospital. Both the ER and the doctors office told me my insurance would cover it. Then the harassing bills start. The insurance company says there was a gap in the paperwork provided. But the doctors office refuses to address it. They just say it is the insurance companies problem. The only words I can use to describe it are unprofessional, discourteous, disorganized. And at the end of the day downright criminal. They clearly misrepresented themselves and will not even attempt to fix their paperwork shortfall or talk to the insurer to try to rectify it. I guess my credit record is taking a hit because there is no way I am paying these crooks. read more

I called to cancel since there's no way of canceling your appointment online and when you call when they are closed like they were for the holidays you get a recording. I've been going to this practice for years and I love them. So strange to see negative reviews. Dr. Barry Hearst really listens to you, answers your questions in depth, keeps abreast of the latest best practices for eye care, and he's just genuinely a nice person. I have had to wait quite a while on occasion but that is because this office, thankfully, will give priority to emergency situations. So, yes, I always bring a book! Of course, I bring a book to every doctor appt I ever have. I recommend them highly. read more

Arrogant, mediocre doctors with no "bedside" manners, who think their time is way more valuable than yours, and who have no clue how to run an office efficiently. I had a 2:30pm appointment but they didn't call me back until 3:45pm after I threatened to leave. After dilating my eyes, they told me to wait 10-15 minutes for the dilation to take effect. I sat there for another hour until Dr. Rogers finally called me back. I expressed to Dr. Rogers my displeasure with having waited so long, but she couldn't have cared less. She's one of these people who likely makes a ton of money off her clients and doesn't give a hoot about any of them. She spent maybe three minutes in total with me and was clearly irritated by my questions about my eyesight. Pass. These people suck. LensCrafters will treat you 10x better. read more

Beware for an extra long rant.... Well I've been here three times in the past week and a half now so I figured it was time to Yelp. Last Monday I woke up with serious eye problems. My eye was all red and watering and things were not new. Being new to the city, my usual optometrist is 2.5 hours away. I called around trying to find an opthamologist, but nobody would take me because I was a new patient - until I found Eye Physicians. They made me an appointment that afternoon. My relationship with Eye Physicians is a love hate one. The first appointment went well. My opthamologist, Dr. Traubert was very good and knowledgable. He did a good job of not only explaining what was wrong, but how it could have been caused and what woudl work to remedy it. My problem required two follow-up appointments. For both of my follow-up appointments they double booked me with others. Once I waited about 30 minutes which wasn't too bad except my appointment was at 8:00 am and the doctor walked in the office at 8:30. Annoying... if the doctor doesn't start work until 8:30, don't schedule appointments until 8:30. Then, during my appointment this morning I had to wait an hour just to see the doctor. He took the other 8:00 am appointment first and then saw the 8:30 appointment before getting to me. I was furious. Another thing that furiated me was that the issue I had was because of the contacts I was wearing so Dr. Traubert offered to do a new contact lense fitting. Great! I thought. Except he forgot to inform me that this office does not take vision insurance (my other visits had been covered by medical). I told this to the check out lady and she ended up knocking off $40 for me which was nice, but still. Ugh... so there's my rant and my terrible start to the day. read more

I went here for an "emergency" after my cat's claw scratched my eye. As a new patient, I was happy to get an appointment within an hour of calling. The entire staff here is SO friendly. Dr. Traubert did a good job of explaining what had happened to my eye and fixed me up with some meds. My only complaint is that I waited a full hour and 15 minutes after I arrived to be seen by the doctor, without an apology for the wait or an indication on how long I'd be waiting when I arrived. I was forced to take the day off for my injury, so I didn't mind very much, but if I had a tight schedule this day would have been beyond frustrated. The office is very nice: has 2 waiting rooms, a large selection of glasses, and a TV set to HGTV. read more

The best eye Dr.'s . I HABE een seeing the doctor's at this eye practice for years and they are simply amazing! Dr. Garber is as honest and amazing as they come. He is the hardest working Doctor that I've seen anywhere in regardless of what firld. It hasn't been there in years and everyone remembered both me and my Grandfather who also went there and had his cataracts surgery performed by Dr. Garber and he too had nothing to say but good things about his experience with this institute. Let me start off by saying that I am so grateful to this office and especially Dr. Herst. I poked myself in the eye and overtime a blood spot appeared on my eye and a small bump ON my eye (not my lid) formed. It got to the point where if I closed my eye the bump were still be visible, gross, I know. I went to a Target eye doctor (I'm without insurance and really hoped it wasn't serious) and I was told "it looks like cancer" "This may blind you" "I've never seen ANYTHING like that" I left crying my face off and they recommended me to this office. I called in a sheer panic minutes before they closed and the receptionist scheduled me for an emergency appointment the next morning although before I explained to her my issue said they were booked, so greatly appreciated. I came in did the normal paper work and all of that and I was greeted by the assistant and she was so great. She hadn't seen anything like what was going on with my eye and she was just overall was great. The doctor came in and I think it was obvious that I was scared and I told him what happened and what the other doctor told me. I think he was annoyed that the doctor told me it was this drastic chronic disease when he said "yes what you have is rare, but it's not cancer and it will not blind you" 2 more months of weekly visits Dr. Herst finally removed my issue and he gave me such a great discount because I didn't have insurance. He also didn't charge me for my weekly visits because all I did was come in, have him check it out and check my eye pressure other doctors would have charged me. He skipped his lunch so he could do the surgery on my eye and my eye has been perfect ever since. I really appreciated his patience especially since apparently my eye had issues, the anti-botics didn't help, I had high eye pressure, I bled a lot, the issue was rare, it didn't help that I was always nervous, and the thing kept getting bigger and bigger each week. I have highly recommended this place to anyone I know with and without insurance. I got very lucky to have found this place any other doctor would have either not known or have charged me thousands. Oh and they let me pay in payments without credit checks and all of that. The issue with my eye made me not want to leave the house and it was miserable so again I'm so grateful Dr. Herst! read more

Came here as a referral from my PCP, and at first everything was going well...2 hours later of more waiting than anything, I am becoming more disappointed in the service aspect of this office. My PCP told me to bring a book, but really...2 hours of waiting is more than what I bargained for! I find the office staff a bit snarky, to say the least once this appointment is over, I will not be returning for subsequent follow ups. read more

I'm knocking this one down to 2 stars. I still like Dr. Banser, but am not in love with their billing department. In order to get my glasses benefit with my eye insurance (long story -- basically, a contact fitting, even without actual contacts being purchased, counts as my "contacts benefit"), I asked them to file a corrected claim with the insurer. Once I got my glasses benefit back, I'd pay them out of pocket for the contact fitting. Simple, right? That was back in January, and we're STILL fighting this one out. They're always nice about it, but aren't always the best about returning calls. And I just talked to the insurer, who told me that the corrected claim the office did submit (about a month or so after I talked to them about it) was filled out incorrectly...which means we'll be going through this again. So...I'm conflicted. In sum: like Dr. Banser, not pleased with a lot of other aspects of the practice. read more

I want to express the highest accolades for Dr Barry Herst and the Eye Physicians and Surgeons. I have lived with severe nearsightedness and gas permeable contact lenses for over 30 years. I became a candidate for cataract and lens implant surgery and after two out patient procedures, two weeks apart, I now live a contact lens free lifestyle with 20/20 vision. It is truly a life changing experience to be able to wake up in the morning and be able to see perfectly without corrective lenses and proceed throughout your day with great eyesight (much better than I had with contacts). No more scratchy tired eyes from a long day of wearing lenses and the necessary attentive maintenance. Every step of the way through the pre-surgery analysis, day of surgery and subsequent follow up appointments, are extremely professionally managed by Dr Herst and Chicago Eye Institute. Was referred there years ago for persistent eye infection by primary DR., they saw me next day and of course you have wait when they fit you in. Problem was taken care of. Due to eye issues once a year a year visit if healthy on my medical insurance. They are not on my optical plan and do not push/ up sell their eyeglasses .eye infection reoccurred fri night, called office Saturday morning, after discussion and they prescribed eye antibiotics in not better in five days or it gets worse call, they fit you in but you have to wait , bring a book as you are last in line. Which is acceptable in a busy place as long as I am treated. read more

I came to Eye Physicians and Surgeons as a "refuge" from another place. I've been here around 2-3 years. The staff here is absolutely wonderful--friendly, kind, very professional and superb. In addition, the technicians are amazing--so great and incredibly accurate and detailed. Everyone is happy, friendly and totally plugged into patient care. The shop has all the latest state of the art equipment. I have many eye issues--Glaucoma, which requires not only medication but monitoring with field of vision testing and checking the optic nerve regularly. This has been done with expertise and minimal discomfort. They have been monitoring my cataract in my left eye, and just 2 weeks ago I had cataract surgery with a new Torque lens installed. The surgery was incredible. The staff at the Center for Advanced Care hospital treated me wonderfully, and certainly went out of their way to give excellent care and I was amazed at the results. Of course, this is all possible because of the patience, humor, kindness and incredible expertise of Dr. Barry Herst. I can say without hesitation Dr. Herst is my absolute favorite doctor of all time! His attention to detail, his kindness and willingness to listen to me and my concerns, his ability to make me feel as I were his only patient when I know darn well he sees hundreds of patients in addition to surgery! The ability to provide excellent patient care and also be a great surgeon are two special qualities that Dr. Herst provides with grace, dignity and humor. All this time, the month of waiting for the appointment and the hour and a half wait - just for this doc to give me over the counter drops?
