We recently hired Universal Floor Covering for installing laminate flooring throughout our 2,100 sq ft home (including stairs), and we chose Universal Floor Covering after meeting Mike through Yelp. Mike was incredibly knowledgeable and helpful during our initial showroom visit -- he helped us choose the perfect flooring for our style and needs. After choosing some samples, Mike kindly came to our home to help us visualize the floor in our home and provide an estimate. We ended up choosing Universal Floor Covering due to their pricing and timeline estimates beating out other bids we received. We settled to start our install on April 15th. Mike was very responsive throughout the entire process -- quick to answer texts and calls, and even flexible enough to start the job a day early when our painting finished ahead of schedule. He also made it easy for us to pay the deposit in a way that worked with our schedule, which we appreciated. That said, there were a few hiccups during the project that are worth noting. Right before the job started, one of Mike's installers was injured, which meant only one person handled the install for the first three days (the size of the project needed two people). While we understand accidents happen, this delay wasn't communicated to us upfront, we only found out after speaking with the installer directly. Since we had already scheduled movers based on the original timeline, this lack of transparency caused unnecessary stress due to us needing to move out of our previous home. The quality of the work itself was excellent. The flooring looks fantastic, especially on the stairs, but we did run into a few issues: - The work contract originally included remove and re-install existing toilets. However, we had arranged with Mike to install the new toilets we bought instead. During the install, one of the workers told me they aren't going to install the new toilets and instead offered for side payment to do it himself. This was completely unprofessional behavior. After I asked Mike about the toilet issue, he clarified he isn't going to be installing them as he didn't want to risk damage due to the added floor height and offered a reasonable concession by waiving the install cost and giving me the toilet wax he bought free of charge. - We noticed some scuffs and stains on our freshly painted walls post-install, and while Mike seemed defensive at first, his crew did clean them up before wrapping up. - The baseboards provided were 8ft MDF, which led to a lot of seams along long walls -- not a deal-breaker, but something to be aware of. Throughout the job, Mike remained respectful and professional, even when issues came up. However, at times, his tone felt defensive when we raised concerns, and we didn't feel that the project delay was fairly addressed or credited. All in all, Mike offers great product selection, fair pricing, and solid workmanship. But communication and professionalism during challenges could be improved. I'd still say he's worth considering if you're gathering quotes -- just make sure expectations are clearly set from the start and stay in close communication throughout. read more

So I went ahead and did something stupid and bought a house... let's not talk about that.. let's talk about Mike and his install crew. So I had 6 flooring types in the house. Ridiculous nightmare and ugly af. So I went and did some shopping and ended up checking out these guys. From the second I walked in, I had Mike's attention and having a general idea of what I wanted was a giant help. But after visiting a large number of shops, I ended up back here. After obtaining several quotes and options, I decided to take a chance on this nice guy who had paid attention to what I was looking for, was attentive and observant while walking me through the process. After looking at multiple options, I made some choices. I then realized that I had made a mistake and needed to add baseboards throughout the whole house. So I was able to get those installed as well. Its crazy how fast the crew was. 2 days and about a thousand square feet of carpet and flooring had been removed replaced and beautiful new flooring installed. As well as baseboards. They cut the planking to fit around a toilet, handled some weird wall angles and did it significantly cheaper than the competitors that I had met and received quotes from. The scheduling was simple and accommodating. The floors look fantastic throughout the upstairs and the stairway now. I am very pleased with the job and would encourage you to give Mike a chance. Mike the owner came to my house to visit to give me a quote. He came on time and emailed us the quote the same day as he had promised. I called 4 installers and they quoted similar pricing. But the other guys said installation would be 5days, 6days, and 9 days. Mike said 3 days. 3 days? That would have been a deal breaker if I didn't see all these reviews and photos on Yelp. Another installer sent me photos of his work. It did not look as good as Michael's team. When it comes to installation, you need to check how they do the stairs. The guy did a very good job with my stairs. See photos. Mike the owner came on day 1 and day 2 to check on the progress. They finished the work in 2.5 days a few hours ahead of schedule. They did a good job. See photos. Part Two. Universal flooring did the installation for my luxury vinyl flooring for my house. Unfortunately I already bought all my flooring when I found this store. But I did visit the store . Wow Universal flooring has the BIGGEST selection of luxury vinyl flooring. They carry many known brands and they also carry some smaller brands that you won't find in other stores. Again pricing wise is competitive. But selection is huge. I scanned the store and already wish I had purchase floors here. Part 3. Floor and decor. I practically bought every sample of floor and decor samples to my house. I love Floor and decor and most their luxury vinyl is cheaper at around 2.99-4.50 (avg 3.69) per square foot. Universal flooring avg 4.69 per square foot at the time I visited. But floor and decor is 6mm vs Mike's floors are 8 mm. Floor and decor's floors are soft and flexible and lower quality. Some of the edging: teeth breaks right off. Universal flooring sells much higher quality flooring: Vinyl is Hard and not bendable; thicker and stronger edges. The patterns are much better than floor and decor. You get what you pay for. Highly recommend Mike and his store. P.S. none important side story: I almost didn't use Mike because we had a small miscommunication and I thought Mike was impatient with me and I didn't want to use someone unless they can answer all my million questions patiently . But we had a open heart to heart conversation and I found that Mike is a warm person inside who cares about his work and customers. And he will answer all your questions. So if he appears a bit frustrated; don't worry, he's just trying to get his point across. I think we were having a hard time understanding each other's point. He thinks I don't understand him. This was our second time going with Mike because the first time was perfect and the floors are still good to this day. However, the second time has been the complete opposite experience. We went with SLCC Vinyl water proof floors and though they looked great, they started lifting within a year. They first started lifting near the kitchen area and now the floor is lifted everywhere. In under two years, the floors are completely destroyed. I am very disappointed with the quality of these floors. Wasted 10k on these floors and now have to redo them again. read more

Let me preface this by saying I initially chose to go with the company because Mike promised 1 year warranty and that they were licensed. I could have gone with another company for $1000 less without warranty and license. Let me go on to say that Mike also promised that he would help out with our small closet, at no additional cost. What a mistake. When Mike and his men finished our floors, I had to remind him of the closet. He then pulled an angrily "I did not say that," when reminding him of the small closet. Mike ended up charging us an additional $750 for it. At this point we were over it and just wanted to get it done. Come 10 months later and the step in the closet began to break apart. Mike now says he only promised a 6 month warranty. Tell me, Mike, how good is your work if you can only guarantee a 6 month warranty? Your several lies, promises you cannot keep, and crappy work is all very comical. At one point I began to blame myself for going with your company, but now it is obvious to see that you build your company on lies and empty promises. read more

Because of covid/supply chain issues outside of Mike's control, we experienced delays with receiving the materials--Mike was professional about keeping me updated on the progress and I was always confident that as quickly as the materials arrived that the installation would begin. They began work less than a day after the materials arrived and the 2000 sq ft project was done in 1.5 days. I wish more contractors ran their business the way Mike does. We had our dining room and kitchen floor replaced by Mike and his crew Danny and Joaquin over the Thanksgiving holiday. The timeline on this was crazy fast. I called for a quote on Monday. Mike answered the call on the 2nd ring. He was only a few blocks away from me so he came over about 45 minutes later to look over the job and give us a quote. He also brought a couple of samples of flooring that would go with the hardwood we have in the rest of the house. My husband came home in the meantime and as we were talking about picking out the actual flooring Mike said he was going to go to his warehouse in San Dimas, would then be going back to the job where he was before he came to my house, and asked if I wanted to go with him so I could see all the samples in the showroom which I did. I was able to pick out the flooring I wanted. He said it would take a day to order it. The crew came to demo on Wednesday, Thanksgiving was on Thursday and they came back to install on Friday. This whole process took 4 days and by the end of it we had a beautiful floor. Friendly work crew that worked fast and kept the job site clean. We opted to put the old transition piece that matched the flooring in the living room back but living with it for a day we decided we should have changed it to match the new flooring instead. We called Mike and Danny and Joaquin came back on Saturday and replaced it. We will be calling Mike at Universal Floor Covering next time we have any flooring needs. read more

This is a long overdue second 5 star review for Mike and his team. After having done such a great job at my cousin's condo (flooring and wall tile), we knew Mike was the guy when my parents needed new flooring. Despite taking a year (or maybe even more?) to decide on the floor, Mike was incredibly patient and listened very closely to all our discussions and concerns. The flooring was for a room with dark wood paneling, so selecting a non-carpet floor that wouldn't clash with either the wood panelling nor the rest of the original hardwood floors was very challenging. Mike finally was the one that found the perfect floor - one we probably would have never otherwise considered. Short version: 10/10! We are so thankful to have found Mike and Universal Flooring! Long version: It has taken me a while to write this referral because I wanted to do it justice! At the end of 2023, my family was moving into a new home and we were desperate to redo the flooring before moving in. For weeks I went to Home Depot and Lumber Liquidators and compared flooring options. I was all over the place, undecided between wood, engineered wood, laminate and vinyl. I had finally decided on something and I called Mike to get an estimate on installation. He came over and measured the floor and gave us an estimate well below the big box stores. I was telling him about my indecisiveness and he suggested that I come to his showroom to really get a feel for the different floor types. A few days later my family and I went to the showroom and I fell in love with a special order laminate. My husband was thrilled that I had finally made a decision! We were on a tight timeline for moving in and Mike called the flooring manufacturer on a Saturday to be sure they had my pick in stock. Mike ordered the floor immediately and we all waited for it to be delivered to California. We were also juggling appliance deliveries and I was concerned that would hinder the floor install. Mike assured us that he and his team would take care of whatever popped up. With days to spare before our move in, about a week before Christmas!!!, Mike and his team get our beautiful floor installed. Mike comes to the job site often to check on the work. We had initially decided to put the flooring over our kitchen tile but Mike and his team called us immediately as soon as they realized our dishwasher wouldn't fit with that scenario. We gave them the OK to rip out the tile in order to put the flooring down. And they still got it all done in time! Mike is always available and responsive. I never knew laminate flooring could look this good. Everyone that comes over raves about it and my husband jokes that the house would have easily sold for more money if this flooring was in place instead of the nasty carpet it came with.
