This has always been my go to shop (it's been a decade of supporting them), but I've really noticed this past year it is t the same. Attitude will make or break a business, and someone better get it figured out, too many bike shops in Portland for elitist D's to turn away walk-in customers. The web has killed brick-and-mortar shops, but UC has developed the best mingling of the two - I love going on their site and seeing if something is in stock before I drive into the city, or when it will be available. If I were to continue supporting them, I'd just ship to my house, since I'm not cool enough to discuss bike stuff with. (FYI: this has been festering from my last 4 visits, from multiple employees, not just a single incident - get your staff straightened out). read more

Clueless about customer service, steer well clear. I have a problem with an order. I'm in England, and the parts I need are not available here. Universal Cycles sent me an order for a customer in Ontario by mistake. Six weeks later, no solution. Every email has to be chased for a week or more before they bother to answer it. I don't have my order, the guy in Ontario doesn't have his, and my emails are now just being ignored. Plus I'm out of pocket for the import costs on the mis-delivered goods. What a crew. read more

I tried using universal cycles to purchase a bike bag for my E bike. They advertised that it fit all E bikes, but it didn't fit mine. I returned the bag and asked that they reimburse my return postage costs because of the fact that it was supposed to fit, but didn't. They were quite arrogant when they denied my request because they said that they didn't provide a "100% guarantee" (whatever that is) that it would fit. Short sided and cheap. I'll never shop there again. They lost a good customer over $15 and a bad attitude. read more

But as a loyal customer who drives from the west side (Hillsboro) in rush hour traffic, I'm quite disappointed at how invisible I was and have been the last couple visits. I'm probably gonna go with BikeTiresDirect now...especially since they do free shipping for orders more than $100. And if it's local and in stock, you can get your stuff within 24hrs. Recently I found myself in a very remote location... more remote than you can imagine.., with a bicycle wheel turned taco and no bike store within an ungodly number of miles. Desperate I turned to the Internet only to find a million wheels either not right or to expensive for my decade old cross bike, or both. On the recommendation of a friend I called Universal cycles and they helped me out like my hundred dollar wheel was a custom build set, taking the time to make sure I would get everything I needed. While there were cheaper options I chose Universal cycles because they were the best VALUE and assured Quality at an affordable price. Ten days later the wheel arrive and it was a perfect fit and worked beautifully out of the box in large part the seller knew what questions to ask (many I didn't think to know) to make sure everything worked. Mike & Co. at Universal Cycles operate a great online and retail bike store. For whatever my bike related need is Universal is my go to place. There online store always has tons of items in stock at a fair price. They even do instantaneous price matching, no sales tax and fair shipping prices. I love that at Universal Cycles I can take my bike in for new break cables or whatever with no snide looks or incredulity from the staff - just pleasant service and insanely quick turnaround times. Never mind their giant inventory inside the brick and mortar, there's more online! And you can check online to see if it's in stock which gives you the option to pick it up or have it shipped. Customer service their has been hit and miss... sometimes less than helpful... sometimes warm and friendly. It's ok with me as I usually know what I need and don't have too many questions, concerns. Like bars, I have stumbled into many bike shops since moving to Portland. I have really come to love this one. Not only are their staff, friendly and competent; their in-house selection is always changing and diverse, but they are an always evolving and growing, staying up-to-date and competitive with the market. Hell, I used to be a bike mechanic and I found out there that my knowledge was grossly out of date. By like years. Awkwardly out dated. Free-wheels aren't the "norm" anymore on new bikes. Color me magenta. Their website is live and has a local (Portland) mode, so you can know if they have something in stock without even calling, which is cool, if you an are anti-social phone freak. If they don't have it locally, they can order it from their warehouse in a few days, which is super keen. Just chill out and it gives you an opportunity to come back and visit their eight cats. That's right. Eight. They support a local cat rescue organization. Sometimes when I am early for work I just come in and visit the cats. And the staff doesn't mind. read more

In a city where there is a bike shop on every corner, this place stands out for sure. As a non-cyclist this store really went the extra mile for me. I needed to buy a gift for my avid cyclist fiance, but needed it to be a surprise. A friend of mine recommended these guys to me and I'm glad they did! The guys at Universal were super patient and informative, not pretentious like some other shops in Portland! I've been back a couple times since and will definitely continue to return in the future. I've worked off and on as a bike shop mechanic for about 6 years, and I have my own tools, so I tend to mail order the parts that I need and do the work myself. I have almost no use for Puget Sound area brick-and-mortar bike shops. The prices are absurd and the service can be clueless, careless, and haughty--not the most inviting trio of characteristics. If you're only patronizing shops for your maintenance needs, then you really should save some money and try doing it yourself. Bikes are simple beasts, and basic upkeep on all but the spendiest thoroughbreds is pretty straightforward. Universal Cycles is the best of the online shops. They've cut me some great deals, graciously handled returns, politely addressed one of their own minor mistakes, quickly responded to inquiries, and very nearly always had what I was looking for and at the best price. Also, if you're a Chris King fetishist--and really, why wouldn't you be?--UC has a neighborly relationship with those folks that can get you anything King makes in no time at all. For at least the last year I've sworn off local bike shops (LBS) and stuck with Amazon. I don't particularly like this approach but prices and availabity of parts at LBS tends to be horrible. There's nothing worse than having to go to three shops and in the end having a shop have to order your part anyways. This isn't intended to be a knock on LBS, I understand the huge challenges (especially in capital and inventory) they face. I'm new to Portland and stumbled across Universal Cycles websites and searched for two fairly obscure parts. The website said they had both in stock and ready for pickup in Portland. I used the website chat feature to confirm availabity. Note: the parts were essentially the same price as Amazon. When I stopped in to pick up the parts it was the lunch hour and there were a lot of customers there picking up and dropping off. The staff was quick, friendly and efficient. They answered a few of my questions, got me my stuff and I was out the door. read more

Where have you been all of my life, Universal? If there ever was such a thing, Universal is a bicycling superstore. I was amazed at how much stuff they stocked, which is my major complaint with most cycling stores (they usually only have like one of anything). Bike pump small parts, dozens of different bottle cages, and tons of clothing are only the tip of the iceberg. Color me impressed. In need of a small bit of odd hardware, they even pulled out the parts catalogs, had no luck, but recommended a hardware store in town that would likely have what I needed. They're a little bit out of my way in that I'd have to pass a few other great shops to get to them, but I'll definitely be a repeat customer. read more

This Place is Rad more of Distributor then a Bike Shop with a Very Large Number of Parts and Accessories in stock. Universal Staff Cycles know how to use the Parts and Accessories that they sell. Bought some high end replacement grips there at a good price. So, even during covid they are open-ish. More importantly they are helpful. I ordered a bike from them, had an issue (my fault) brought it right back and they fixed it. I wanted a pair of bike shoes and no one is open to try anything on, but they let me buy them and try them on in my car. Same for my partner. Despite the covid restrictions they were quite accommodating and helpful. Looking forward to things being open again, and there is an amazing store waiting for the beginner to the advance biker. The people working here are awesome. Super knowledgable and honest. Their location is perfectly located on E. Burnside, with their entrance in the rear off the bike street, Ankeny. I just happened to be in the neighborhood yesterday, walking my young toddler in his jogging stroller when I realized my tire was flat. When I popped in, a gentleman came right over and actually pumped up my tires for me. I wasn't there to buy anything at the time, but was impressed with his level of customer service even though I wasn't spending money at the time. Their selection is incredible and their prices competitive. Stop in and get your bike fixed up with any and all accessories you can imagine. They won over my loyalty. Universal Cycles is a great online retailer. I know people living in other states that have used these guys religiously for years. Their pricematch feature and discount coupons make them hard to beat. They also have a vast inventory and fast shipping for in-store pickup. Their old retail store was small, cramped and hard to get to in the NW industrial area. Now that they have moved to Burnside/Ankeny and have more space, they have in-store inventory that matches (or beats) any store downtown. I love that they are located on a bike-friendly street like Ankeny. They even have ample parking if you drive your carbon belching beast. These guys are my sole source of parts other than inner tubes and emergency items. Pro's: Best prices on parts in Portland Great new location between Burnside and Ankeny Bike parking inside the store Con's : Staff is helpful and nice, but not as passionate as you will find at your LBS. Items in the store are not individually priced currently, although they said they are going to mark everything next week. Like to see more bikes on the floor. I came here on a long ride. I sought a single thing - a bell for my bike. The person behind the counter showed me where the bells hung on small metal racks. I was helped by another person. I didn't expect to put the bell on without a screwdriver. That person behind the counter did lend me a screwdriver. She was rather nice and went out of her way to help me out on the bike bell. It's really amazing that this level of service would exist. There are even racks inside the place for bikers to park their bikes in. There were a lot of other things in the store if I wanted to buy a shirt or a bike seat. read more

Folks at this shop are very knowledgable about all things cycling. Julie helped me upgrade my drivetrain on an older road bike and really dialed in all the parts for compatibility, price and quality. She also knew the right tools i needed to shorten a new chain and techniques to reattach a quick link without buying an additional tool. A previous experience with another mechanic helped me decide and source a suspension rebuild kit for a fox fork and rear air sleeve. Just had a bad time when I complained about my shipment being shipped to the wrong place. Good experiences for the last two years until my most recent order. They shipped it to a "Pickup Location", another business over a mile from my home. When I emailed a complaint, I received a thorough dressing down from their customer service man, Mike C. Cool as f**k and terrible customer service. We called ahead to get a quote on some work, and came in based on that quote. We then enter the store, are the first at the counter, and are ignored by every single employee that came up to ring up the growing crowd. I get when there's a rush, but maybe check in with people to see who was first? We then get to meet with someone who asked what we needed help with and then informs us the quoted price was incorrect. It's now twice what we were told over the phone, with no one working asking any questions of us to find out more details, or any effort being made to make amends for their lack of communication. Though it's the closest bike store to me, I'll be driving across town to a community based bike shop that gives a shit.
