They close at 4:30 on Saturday. I understand this. I pull up at 3:58 pm on Saturday. All I need is someone to check my battery, or charge it, or see what's wrong with it. No this must have been an imposition for the two guys that were there. I walk get out of my car and walk up one guy walks toward me and right past me to a car outside. I walk in, another guy passes me as I go toward the counter, he also says nothing. I figured there was someone else attending to the counter. I stood at the counter for 15 minutes.....waiting waiting waiting. I looked in their direction out the window as they were both working on this car, and they saw me looking but did nothing, said nothing. Maybe I was the wrong color. Asked them to rebuild my starter last August 2016. They did not. They charged me $139 for a new starter. On April 22, 2017, the starter failed. They refused to replace it. Said it was my fault because it was caused by a backfire (Diesel engine backfire???). When I explained that it is a diesel, he claimed that I had used starting fluid. I did not. Took the starter to a reputable dealer who told me that the starter was a Chinese knockoff and they are known to fail due to cheap pot metal construction and they are available for $67.00 at Walmart Later contact with owner of shop got me nowhere. 5 boaters in my marina had similar experiences with this business. The only positive review was from the person who recommended them to me. He is in the armed forces and hadn't used his boat for a few months. He returned and the starter failed. They offered him a replacement for $75.00. Gee, go to Walmart, get one with a guarantee for $67.00 and pocket the $8 bucks. Nice business. read more

After a nightmare situation involving a tow truck company, I arrived at United and told them I was 4+ hours late to work because I was waiting on the tow truck to arrive. I asked them how long they thought it would take, and they got me in immediately. The battery got pulled out, swapped with a new one, and I was out the door in a less than an hour. Yesterday I started my car and as I pulled into traffic I heard a whizzing sound and my battery light came on. I was about a mile and a half from United, so I headed straight there. By the time I got there all my lights but the engine light had come on. I pulled into United, and they popped my hood and said I needed a new alternator. I left it around 10, and it was done by 1:30! I have a 5 year old F-150 and the battery recently died. I called United Battery Systems at 4:30 to check on closing time. They said they close at 6:00 PM and to bring the truck over. So off I went to get a new battery. As soon as I got there, we popped the hood and he checked my battery, electrical system and alternator. Sure enough, my battery was near dead and was no longer taking a charge. So after choosing my replacement battery I went to sit down and just as I was getting comfortable, they called me to the cash register to pay for my battery. I asked the guy at the cash register how much longer it will be and to my surprise he said I was done and ready to go. Wow. It took them all of 20 minutes from the time I rolled in to the time I rolled out. They also offset the labor charge with my old battery that they bought back. Labor was just under $38. Service was excellent. Prices are reasonable and no sales tax since they are in Portland. read more

They replaced my battery with free installation within five minutes- I paid and was out the door. Everyone was wearing masks and following CDC guidelines as well. I have been Yelping for quite awhile now, mostly food. However I had to share my thoughts about United Battery Systems to the rest of the Yelp community. Keeping a long story short, take your time choosing the right company to buy your batteries from!! In all my years of working with local vendors/business partners I have never come across a company that wouldn't admit they made a mistake, take ownership of that mistake and make it right. It's sad during the current downturn in economy (or any economy for that matter) that customer service and good business practice is still lacking with United Battery Systems. This place used to be OK when they had cheap, good batteries. However, in the last 4 years I've gone through 3) $90 72 month batteries, none of them lasting more than 2 years (and one of them was the wrong size). Sure you get pro-rated credit for a new battery, but they're crappy batteries so why bother? You'll just be waiting to be stranded one more time in the near future. I had about $60 in pro-rated credit when my last United battery died but I ended up tossing the receipt and cutting my losses. So, bite the bullet and spend an extra $15 -25 and get a DieHard or other quality product elsewhere. I ended up buying a AAA battery with a three year full warranty (not pro-rated) for $115. United is a total waste of time. read more

These guys are at the top of my go-to list for anything automotive electrical. My son had an old camper and wanted to wire in a battery and charging system so it would charge as he drove. They ran all the wiring, got the right battery and connections and wired it all up so all he had to do was slide in the camper and plug in. Over the years (probably 15 or so) I have had charging, battery, alternator problems with various vehicles and United has JUMPED on the problem (reminds me of Les Schwab) to fix it. Sometimes there was NO CHARGE. Sometimes they found workarounds to save money. But when I had to get something new, they were always the most reasonable. I don't even check around for pricing anymore because A) they can handle it, B) they will save you money if they can, C) they are the most reasonable on pricing, D) its not worth the time and risk of working with anybody else. They don't treat you like a dummy, even if you are one. Their coffee was old and stale but if you want coffee in Portland, don't go to a battery store. Now I need a battery tender-type charger and when I call them up, the guy says, "bring in the battery and we'll charge it up" and "we have a whole wall full of chargers to look at -- we can set you up". If you need this type of work, why on earth would you go anywhere else? read more

Worst customer service ever! Had a starter rebuilt, paid, received a receipt with a 12 month warranty. Didn't get around to putting the starter in until close to the 12 month mark, starter did not work. Took it back to them, they claimed the same issue was wrong as what was initially wrong that they supposedly fixed. They were extremely rude, said that the starter had been sitting in water. It has not seen water even once (but it is a boat starter so shouldn't matter as it has a warranty.) literally called me a liar over the phone. Went to pick it up and the employee once again rude, made us wait for the owner to return 45 minutes later who informed us that they would not honor warranty. They charged us again, refused to honor warranty and refused to give out a stamp on it said no warranty this time but they "guarantee it will crank." Will NEVER bring them business again. Losing a customer over not honoring a warranty on something for $189. Will be even more disappointed if I paid that plus $139 the second time and dealt with their horrible service if it indeed is not repaired again. Would leave 0 stars if I could. read more

Today my daughter's battery died and I promptly looked up their address and sent her there. Jason was so kind and helpful. One thing I know is that as woman, we have to be very careful whom we go to for our automotive needs. Many places assume we are unaware and incompetent and try to take advantage of us financially. This is not the case with United Battery. I was confident that they would be able to help her and would do so fairly. And what do you know, she was able to get her battery at a cost no others could compete with. How can you beat that? I guess my first experience with United Battery was a fluke... ever since that day things have deteriorated. I left a battery with them to be charged (with a tag on which we were made to write our phone number) and they sold it to someone. Someone offered us 10% off our next purchase from them, but when I bought an alternator from them, they seemed to have forgotten all about that. When I came into get the $40 core fee back for the alternator (which has a United Battery sticker on it) I didn't have my receipt. Even though I had just been in there and they recognized me and the car was sitting outside with the stickers alternator in it, clear as day, the manager claimed that he could only give me $10 back because he couldn't be sure which alternator they sold me (like they couldn't look at it or look it up). It was so obvious to me that this was a flat-out lie that I left, refusing the $10. I'm past disappointed into being really pissed off. I guess my time there was just a good day for them or something. I'm taking my business elsewhere. read more

I purchased a battery in 2013 and had great customer service the first time around. A year and 1/2 later the battery quit and even though I didn't have the paper work they honored the 5 yr warranty and replaced my battery free of charge. The only place that we could find that does a real free electrical diagnostic on our van. Not just plug in a thing and give us a code to look up. They got under the hood, found the problem for FREE. Then it only cost 50 bucks and about 40 minutes and they had it running great. read more

I strongly urge everyone to avoid this company like the plague. Over the course of a year, I had to go back three different times to have my starter replaced and after the third time failed, I had to pay a real mechanic to fix the starter problem (and to this day, I have not had one problem with my new starter). After asking for my refund back from United Battery, I was denied the labor part (which was $75), because I was two weeks passed the warranty date. I received horrible customer service by Jason. I will never give them my business again. Hmmm... $75 or a life time customer?? They screwed up on this one! Actually, even if they would have refunded me the $75, I still wouldn't have gone back... I have gone in for a battery and had it installed in less than 10 min, try doing that at Les Schwab! The topper, the reason I will go nowhere else is one time I had to have my car towed in because it wouldn't start. It came off the tow truck and within minutes they were diagnosing it. It wasn't a battery, or starter, or alternator....it was a loose connection to the battery cable! They fixed it in 5 minutes and didn't even charge me. They could have made up something and got me for some cash, but nope, told the truth and didn't even charge for the fix. These guys really came through for me. I had a problem with alternator which they fixed for a fair price and didn't take them long. There was also a short in the battery connection which they found in 5 minutes and replaced wire for free. It was pretty awesome bc the boss had three guys working on my car simultaneously to address the issue and learn how to diagnose the problem in the future. Originally I had a mechanic at another shop look at it for a couple days and they decided they couldn't fix it. I was impressed by United Battery and will be back in the future.
