This store (and the one connected to it) are my favorite in the DMV for thrifting. I have found amazing clothes here! You can find high end brands for just a few dollars. It's massive so come with a plan or you'll get overwhelmed. This location does not have changing rooms. The bathrooms were useable the last time I was here but just barely. The sections are pretty well organized but the chaos definitely increases on busy days. Mondays and Thursdays have 25% off sales and are busy, along with the weekends. If you'd like it to be quieter and more organized come on Tuesdays or Wednesdays. Since there are no changing rooms, wear close fitting clothing so you can try items on over what you're wearing. I love this thrift store. It's enormous and always has clothes I want to buy. I have a tendency to immediately shop the right side of the store, closest to Safeway, forgetting there's an entire duplicate shopping area on the left side! You can spend hours in this store. There are two significant drawbacks to thrifting, though, and this store (like most) exhibits them both: no dressing rooms and an unfriendly return policy. You can return items, but it must be within two weeks and you must spend the money on the day of your return - no money back or store credit. Go prepared - dress in removable layers, with a thin first layer to allow you to try as much on as possible in public! read more

Honestly it's a fierce thrift store but the fact that there's no dressing room doesn't quite make it fully fun experience because you're either having to try on clothes in one of the many (sometimes congested) aisles or risk going home with it just for it to not fit... and you can't even get a refund. The woman in the turban forcefully declined my demand for her name after taking 2 of my shirts at the checkout and was insanely rude. I will not be coming back to this establishment unless she suffers some consequence. She also took 2 fellow teenagers that already paid for their clothes and made them check it out again because they pressed the "No receipt" option. I would love to have this woman fired. This review, and the next review, could quite possibly be a copy and paste review. Let me tell you why. You come here and are expecting two separate thrift stores since they are right next to each other in the plaza. From the outside they appear of good size and has lots to offer. However, when you go inside, you see that it is nothing more than one ginormous space separated by this weird bazaar type area in the middle of the two. It gives off this weird street vibe which just confused me. To me, it just served the purpose to divided the space into what was to be two separate stores. This, and only this, is what is keeping them apart from one another even though they offer the same items at the same prices. I came here in hopes of grabbing some unique (see what I did there) items for my apartment. I was hoping that there would have been a great furniture department in here, but no such luck. It appears that if they do receive furniture and you are not there when it is placed on the sales floor, you are just flat out of luck. There are racks upon racks of clothing that stretches as far as the eye can see. The outer walls are lined with racks that has a good mix of items that are somewhat organized into what one would assume would be a room in your house/apartment. Battling the other customers just to browse in here can be daunting. Honestly, it is the biggest turn off. You could be looking at an item and determining if you want it or not and actively be pushed out of the way because someone is more determined to look than you. I LOVED this thrift store until they permanently closed the dressing rooms (around covid, I think). So now you either have to try on in the aisles, or buy it and bring it back for a credit. That's fine for a sweater, but not for pants and dresses. I am not willing to buy anywhere near what I used to at this store - it's way too easy for things not to fit. read more

Huge store with a connected but separate Value Village. You can easily spend hours here sifting through all the items. They have a lot of stock here and certainly something for everyone. Only downsides are there are NO FITTING ROOMS. I recommend coming in a tight fitted shirt and leggings if you want to try the clothes on. There are mirrors scattered around the store so you can find a corner to try clothes on and look in the mirrors. It's not too bad once you are used to it, but definitely something to be aware of. Additionally, no returns, only exchanges, and the pricing can be inconsistent which sucks but I just put the item back if its overpriced. Overall, a fun place to shop and explore. read more

I have shopped at this location several times but recently their prices don't match the quality of the items. Expect to pay $10-24 for name brands like Nike, Adidas, and Under Armour when they are in very poor condition. Finding decent items are a hit or miss. The condition of this store is generally very messy and chaotic. Clothes all over the floor or hanging off the racks but not on hangers. Other customers will shove through the aisles hitting other carts with no regard for each other. The bathrooms are HORRIFIC. I don't think they've been cleaned in months. It's very unsanitary and some doors don't completely shut, soap dispensers are empty, and toilet paper is sparse. During this recent trip to this location, I had a very strange encounter that left me uncomfortable. One the retail sales associates pulled me out of the self checkout line and would not allow me to go to self checkout, forcing me to go to a register. They made excuses when asked why I was pulled out of line out of all shoppers waiting at self checkout. I found it very odd and uncomfortable. The encounter seemed very targeted in my opinion. I'm very passionate about thrift stores and so when I stumbled upon unique I was very excited. I went a little overboard ha ha. My friend just had her second kid so I spent a lot of time back in the kids section... They have a very large selection of gently used kids clothing at super reasonable prices so I was able to spoil my friend's kids without breaking the bank. The good thing about toddlers is that they grow out of clothes so quickly that most of the clothes we got looked almost brand new. For myself I found that they have a nice selection of plus size clothing for women and I left with a number of new items. They give you a discount on different days of the week and if you bring in items to donate, so I always come in with things to give away which is a good excuse to clear out my closet before I add a bunch of new stuff to it read more

I love thirft shopping! I find the most unique clothing and useful books that my school uses. Have to save money on college books some how. It was snowing outside but Uniques was having a 50% off on everything sale. I was not allowing the weather to stop me from getting my discounts. I came late and felt down because I believed everything would be gone. Went to unique with my mother. I usually find 2 or 3 items and it would be okay, but I found 6 new jeans, 3 coding books, 1 long sleeve sweater. All these items were below 6 dollars and came from my favorite retailer F21. Plus my mother got 4 nice blouses. They have restrooms located at both ends next to the book locations and that is also where the dressing rooms are. The restrooms do not have a pleasant smell or look to them so I usually avoid liquids when going to Unique. As a fellow queer, we love our vintage and our thrifts - it's a known fact you find the best stuff thrifting. Plus, we got to stop the fast fashion industry if we hope to have a chance to prevent the worst effects of climate change. This place is part clothing thrift, part home goods thrift, part bazaar. There's surely something here that for +/- $6.49 you won't be able to do without! Pros: There's ample clothing styles to choose from, size inclusive, all-gender clothing and very few pieces are above $12. Currently it's the winter offerings, but every day (hour?) things go on/off the racks. Clothing is almost always in good (unworn even!) shape and oftentimes brand names itself. Clothing for all occasion from athleisure to prom dresses. Homewear goods are where you can find pint glasses, picture frames, flower vases, used books and more! They accept plastic cards or cash. Cons: -no changing room on site. So best to bring base layers you can swap in and out of, or be prepared to make a return trip -no money returns, only a 1:1 exchange. Thus underlining the imperative that you find your clothes at the right size the first time. (for the record it took me three trips to get it right) All in all this is the place where $100 feels like you can still purchase clothes enough to update your wardrobe and feel like you got more than a pair of jeans and socks read more

I'm truly fascinated by this store, and the huge amount of STUFF they have. There's a scene in It's Always Sunny where Charlie says "People don't appreciate their trash, Frank." It feels a LOT like that. Possibly including the tossing and turning at night thinking about the sweet, sweet trash. I don't think I've ever seen a thrift store with this type of variety, with things I know Goodwill would not accept (like sheets/covers). Of course selection depends on what's been donated. But they have rows of all sorts of kitchen equipment, including pots and pans (scored some great pie dishes and donut pans), small appliances (e.g. waffle makers); some furniture, art, lamps, electronics, and of course clothing. I personally thought the prices were quite reasonable, but that probably is a matter of perspective. For example, found two amazing sets of vintage men's pajamas for $3 each, some really nice coats for $10, and the donut pan, I have a smaller size that I purchased new for probably $15, but paid $6 for this one (in like new condition). I do wish there were some additional covid restrictions, but not exactly sure how that would look like, or what they could really do. I went in because I needed an extra pie dish for Thanksgiving, and people just were not 100% on board with personal bubbles, but they do have markers for 6 feet away for check out. read more

Picture being inside someone's closet and looking at hits and misses. Sometimes there are treasures and sometimes there are duds. You could find a new item with the tags still on or a frayed handbag. I have a found collectible Longaberger baskets or my favorite Vera Bradley handbags. I have found awesome Halloween costumes and even a $4 ball gown I wore on a cruise. There are 2 thrift stores in the same building. Unique thrift is on the right side. Both stores are considered separate entities. If you shop at both stores (which I suggest) you will need to check your bags at a free, safe storage area in between both stores. Keep your claim ticket. There isn't much difference between the two stores. Both have bathrooms and dressing rooms. I prefer the dressing rooms at Value Village, on the left side. The items used to be cheaper. There are still great bargains but I don't understand why the locations marked up items $1 - $7 and higher, considering everything is donated. Handbags range from $3.99 to $9.99. When management has the notion that a bag is valuable, the prices range from $14.99 to $19.99. The more expensive items are kept behind the counter, near the front of the store. I usually don't look at those items. If I am going to look near the front areas, I will glance at the costume jewelry and watches in glass display areas. I have found pretty items or black tie events, as well as hilarious pieces for halloween. I have found new polo and sports shirts for hubby. Not all of the locations have dressing rooms. A bargain is only a bargain, if it fits. All items are 25% off each Monday. On Thursday, your free VIP card will get you 25% off. Once you join the mailing list, you can get notices of holiday sales and other specials. You can sign up for a VIP card any day, except Thursday. read more

I went in looking for glasses, bowls, trays, and other kitchen items and was very surprised by the prices--between $4-$10. I feel like I could pay a dollar or two more for these things new at a place like Ross. This place is huge! It was also mobbed when I was there because on Thursdays everything is 25% off! However, before you rush out there to stretch your dollars you need to know that you need one of their savings card to flash at the cashier, AND you can't get it on Thursdays and use it that day (This info is from my thrifty friend who took me here). Everything is very well priced. Clothing, books, housewares and tchotchkes galore (I had to Google for like, three minutes to figure out how to spell that word)! Honestly, not my favorite place to shop. I felt real dirty when I left. That doesn't mean I won't come back. If you are looking for retro clothes with big shoulder pads (Angelina was wearing them at the Golden Globe Awards), or maybe a knife sharpener... then get on over here, but you'll have to come twice: Once to get your shopping pass, and then again on a Thursday. There are 4 thrift stores that are related in about a 10 mile radius: Unique Thrift Hillendale, New Hampshire Value Village (these 2 - I call double thrift because each side is a thrift store separated by a "bazaar" in between , Unique Wheaton and Adelphi Value Village. They're all with in a 10 mile radius. Good buys can be found at each but it does take some scavenging. They are a For-Profit company but they do buy goods from non-profits to support their programs. They have been more Covid conscious than some grocery stores I've gone to - washing off their carts and making hand sanitizer readily available. You have to be careful and inspect items because sometimes the items inside bagged items on the wall have numerous chips from being knocked around. If you donate, they will give you a 20% off coupon to use in their stores but not on discount days which include: Mondays Customer appreciation 25% off, Senior Tuesdays 30%off , and 25% off Thursdays. This is a solid Unique, long aisles, pretty good selection. Prices are fairly high so you may be better off buying clothing new & deeply discounted directly from the retailers, but I saw a few high-quality items or solid brands represented in the racks of men's clothing (shorts priced from $5 to $12). Books are notably super expensive (priced at $1-$4 with the median in the $3 range), way worse than a library book sale. A few things that are confusing: (1) It's totally unclear why Unique Thrift and Value Village -- two separate branded subsidiaries owned by the same parent company, Savers -- have decided to set up two completely parallel stores, each selling the same sorts of stuff but in two separate places. I found that Unique had slightly better prices on clothing and Value Village had slightly more interesting art, but this may be totally random. (2) Why is there a La Migueleña restaurant attached to Unique? Who came up with the idea of having a counter-service restaurant with seating inside a thrift store? This is genius. (3) Why is there so much furniture and miscellaneous children's play equipment lined up at the front of the store beyond the registers? If you become a VIP member you can have a 25 % discount of the total of your purchase on Thursdays. On Tuesday seniors (55 years or more) receive 30% off. My favorite thrift store to go to when I need some weird costume or craft pieces. It's two thrift stores right next to each other. The only problem is when you find something you think is right and buy it, then find something even better on the other side! I always start on the Unique side of the store and always seem to find more, but every trip is something new. Prices vary a lot, but if you're able to go on deal days and fill up on a punch card you can save money. I don't normally have allergies, but my limit in here is about an hour until I'm a sneezing mess. Great treasures, just be sure to wash your hands (and your new treasures) after leaving! read more

Unique Thrift store is definitely....uh....unique. I know, I know, it's a thrift store and I shouldn't be too picky, but please, let me know if I'm being impractical here. Point 1: I shouldn't find 2 items during my shopping experience that commemorate dead people. This was through random browsing! Doesn't anyone look through this stuff? One was a super-cute Corona tee, and when I flipped to the back, there's a picture of a friendly guy holding his beer mug up on the back, "Rest in Peace, buddy," it said. 1956-2004. Eek!! The next was a funeral ledger, with signatures in it! 15-20 signatures!! Granted, it was only a dollar or two, but with the names of the funeral attendees inside? Somebody wasn't very thorough. Point 2: Some things just should not be re-sold. Obviously used loofahs with hairs stuck in them in a plastic baggie? No. Worn underwear with stains? No. Articles of clothing with pit stains? No. A 3-hole punch without the punchers inside? No. Funeral guest book? See note above. Half-used bottles of cosmetics? Not so much. Opened bags of diapers and depends? I guess that's ok. Reuse, renew, recycle, right? Point 3: The dressings rooms should not smell like pee! I went into dressing room #1 which incidentally is right across from the restrooms, and either there was a hug mistake made by a senile person or someone was too classy to stop trying on garments to walk across the hall. It was so strong and so bad, the ammonia reeking urine smell gave me a headache almost instantly and I moved to the back dressing room. DO NOT use the first changing room! Ok, now I've warned people. I felt really violated by that. Now, I can tell you, after some searching you will probably find some really cute never worn stuff here. They had lots of adorable brand-name, expensive jeans that still had the tags on them. I got a few shirts that were so cute (and coveted) and in great condition, one from Nine West, still had all the tags on it and was obviously never worn, $5.99. Another was a Benneton and the last was a Express. Not too shabby, eh? Minus the feeling totally violated part and the fact that they will resell anything here, I say it's not so bad. Trust me, walk in a be amazed by all the crap they've got. It's a huge place, smells of mothballs and mold, has fluorescent lighting and all the polka-trumpet music you will ever not want to hear blasting overhead. They sell last season Forever 21 clothes for the same price as some items you could get in the store new! My favorite was one time I saw a completely unopened package of index cards, with a sticker on it that said 25 cents, along with Unique's price sticker reading $1.19. REALLY? This place adjoins Value Village and has a strange indoor bazaar running through the building to divide the two thrift shops. Normally, I'd say that value villages can't be beat, but after visiting Unique...I think I changed my mind. My main task when second hand shopping is to find good furniture pieces to refurbish. Unique was kind of a bust in this department, but was awesome in the other home goods department. I love Unique! There are a few in the area, but like everyone else has said, this one is really big. When my friends and I go to Unique, we try to wear t-shirts and leave everything besides our money and cell phone in the car. Not because it's dangerous, but because we are ready to do some real thrifting. Trying on stuff, and moving around, we can't have things like purses and coats slowing us down. It's not a game! It's connected to a value village, which is essentially the same thing. Every federal holiday that falls on a Monday, all UNIQUE and Value Village stores are 50 % off. Mondays are 25% off everything, Thursdays are 25% off with the free member card [make sure you sign up]. They also have days where they will have 25 or 50 % off random things, like shoes or bags. As far as the clothes, you have to come on the right day if you're looking for vintage stuff, I will say that stuff is very limited. Sometimes I come here and can spend like 30 dollars, [not because they're expensive, but because there are soooo many things I want] while other days I leave with nothing. It's really a hit and miss, but honestly all thrift stores I've been to are like that. You have a better chance of finding something here since there are 2 stores connected though. From all the thrift stores I've been to, Unique/Value Village is definitely the cheapest. However, I do find things in there that I absolutely refuse to pay the price they want for it, so I keep walking. My friends and I try to ONLY go when there's a discount, just because why would we want to pay full price if I can get it 25% off two times a week?? I've gotten many blouses and skirts for 2 and 3 dollars, blazers for 2 dollars before. I definitely recommend Unique. I LOVE thrift stores and this is one of my favorite in the DC suburbs. It is really two thrift stores in one-Unique on one side and Value Village on the other. I love it here. I come here sometimes just to walk around because for me it's like sensory overload! This thrift store has just about anything that you could be looking for. There is a SEA of clothing for men, women and children. I have the VIP card so I like to take advantage of the special savings days. I especially like the holiday sales because you can get 50% off. I really do love this thrift store, and I am more than willing to travel to find some cool items. Just a warning....it does get crowded in this thrift store. I mean crowded. There have been times where it is a struggle to navigate my shopping cart through the aisles. It's a popular thrift store so I understand. I am a fan of this place because it is SO BIG! You really have to have the patience to deal with lots of people and children, unless you come during a dead time which I couldn't even tell you when that would be since EVERY TIME I come here, it's jam packed! Additionally, you have to be able to deal with grime. It can be a little stinky and dirty at times... but come on..... deal with it. You are digging through super cheap used clothing. What do you expect... Because of their large selection, I almost always find something whether it's for the house or clothing. But you just have to be in the mood to look, and you can't expect to find something during your first visit. It took me multiple visits before actually getting great finds.
