I REALLY wanted to like this place. After all it is a Bears bar and my bf goes there to watch all the games. We went there the first weekend of my moving back here from Chicago. It was rather dreary outside and drizzly, so perfect football watching weather. I had a salad, he had corn dogs, and we shared tater tots (which I'm happy to see have made their way onto menu's out here as well). The salad "looked a little off" according to my bf. I chalked it up to the fact that it was dressed, and normally I get my dressing on the side. We had 2 beers each and our food. About 4 or so hours later at home, my stomach started feeling rather odd. At first I thought maybe it was heartburn. That was, until I realized I was about to get sick. I felt fine in the morning, after an evening of, lets just say, spending a lot of time hugging the toilet. This, compiled with the fact I had no fever or other symptoms, and also that my bf didn't get or feel sick at all, leads me to believe that I either had food poisoning or got some sort of cross contamination. I'm a vegetarian, and have been most of my life, so maybe the latter is the case. Either way, I will not eat here again! read more

I wouldn't judge or overlook this place based on a few harsh ratings - there's a dearth of decent pubs in this particular area near the Hill as it is - the food is more than tolerable and bar is solid without costing a small fortune. I like coming here on a lovely day for lunch on the patio - go around 11:45 for a choice spot - their menu is predictable yet diverse enough to suit anyone's palate. I tend to get the lunch special just to be different and while it'd be more healthful if I were to go with a salad for a side, I never do - their homemade french fries and sweet potato chips are impossible to pass up. I don't think one comes here expecting haute cuisine; happy hour remains tantalizing, so I'll update accordingly. read more

Better atmosphere for sports fans than for me but the food is okay these days. Best thing is that they have "Pooches on the Patio" doggy happy hour on Saturday afternoons during the warmer months. Unfortunately, you can't take your dog there outside of Pooches on the Patio time. read more

The bar itself is a sports bar, not a pub. When I was there, the small TV's above the bar were playing baseball and hockey. I guess if you want to get your sports fill, this is the bar for you. If you are interested in getting your beer fill, this is not the bar for you. Especially if your poison is Guinness. . .ONE Guinness is $8.80 at this sports bar. I repeat: ONE Guinness is $8.80 at this sports bar. When I told the bartender that had to be the most expensive Guinness in town, she told me that is was because the pours were 20 oz. Come on, the 20 oz. glasses they use are exactly the same size as those at the scores of actual pubs around the D.C. area that generally charge $6 for a Guinness. Ridiculous. Their other drafts are $6.60. Aside from the fact that those completely arbitrary and random amounts are awkward because they always result in having to deal with change, their prices are simply too high. The guy checking ID's at the door was unfriendly. The small crowd at the bar was loud, preppy, and annoying. The second star is solely for the male bartender, who seemed like he belonged in a different (ie. good) bar. I will not be going back. read more

Can't say enough about Union Pub. Time and time again they have been a pleasant and welcome place for to enjoy a quick beer, brunch, or trivia with my friends and family. Menu has something for everyone, and the staff is super friendly. Im an out of town Mets fan so asking for bars to turn the channel is something I usually fear, never been a problem at UP, nor have I ever felt uncomfortable. I've lived in DC for ten years and UP has by far my favorite bar trivia and most enjoyable and not stuffy brunch. Cheers all around! read more

While the drink specials are okay, and the beer selection is pretty good, this bar is ridiculously hypocritical in their patio policies. They are widely known amongst dog owners for the summer event every Saturday of 'Pooches on the Patio'. They are listed on countless pet-owner pages as one of the top places on a lovely Saturday afternoon to sit outside and have a beer in the company of your favorite dog. Well guess what? THEY DON'T ALLOW DOGS ANY OTHER DAY OF THE WEEK. I'm sorry Union Pub, you can't have it both ways. Pick one or the other: dog friendly or not. read more

I had so much fun at Union Pub last night. The work week was INSANE and with the crazy snow coming my roomies and I just wanted to get out of the house and grab some drinks....we called all around cap hill and this was one of the only places open. It was a little bit of a hike...hadn't been there before...but will def be back! Even though they were getting ready to close one of the bars because of the snow the bartender was great and made sure we all had a drink before we moved to the front. Up front we found the juke box and met some other people trying to party through the snowstorm. The atmosphere of Union Pub was exactly what I needed....a fun, relaxed neighborhood bar where I could grab a drink, chat with the bartender, listen to my favorite song and forget all about the work week! The food here is atrocious, although their amber ale and fries are bearable. Service was OK. The atmosphere is too sporty for me, and after-work clientele are best described as "The Young Republicans Club." (The Heritage Foundation is across the street). read more

Not a bad spot to grab beer and bar food when you're looking for a sports bar. It's close to the metro and it has a pretty big patio area. Bar service was also pretty good and a great place for big crowds. The only downside is that the patio closes at midnight. read more

Great place to watch whatever big game is on....great burgers, good drink specials, and a great staff. Trivia nights here are always fun and whoever they contract it out to does a decent job. Didn't give it five stars because I would like to see a little more frequent of a menu change and some more standard pub fair, I don't want shrimp quesadillas or a poi boy in a place that has neon beer signs, but hay what can you do.... crowd gets a little too-cool-for-the-room sometimes but all and all this is a solid local bar - like it a lot. read more

Careful about showing up on a busy weekend... I've generally enjoyed the burgers and quesadillas here (eaten / drank here about 15 times, weeknights and weekends) but my wife and I showed up on a Sunday evening at the start of tourist season and they were out of buns, tortilla chips, bread and wings. Seeing as how this restaurant is 100 steps from a corner store it just didn't make sense. DC gets crowded in the spring, guys! If they plan to add pizza soon to compete with Armand's mediocre offerings across the street they will hopefully stock up on things like cheese and sauce. read more

Union Pub I should preface my review by saying that I am a Hill staffer who comes to Union Pub for lunch or happy hours with relatively frequency during recess periods. The food is adequate--not great--but ok for a pub. I few items like the tator tots and buffalo wings really stand out in a good way. However, I had an experience today while eating at the bar that left me feeling like I didn't want to go back there. After sitting down at the bar and getting no greeting or inquiry about whether I wanted something to drink or eat, I ordered a club soda and wings. My drink and the wings came promptly--the wings were piping hot and good. No complaints. But what did frustrate me was the total and utter disregard the bartender seemed to have for me as a customer. She didn't ask how my lunch was, didn't offer me any napkins with my messy wings, nothing. And when she put the check down, no thank you or inquiry about how the food was. I know that Union Pub is a pub--it's not fine dining. But that doesn't mean that a customer doesn't expect friendly service or even a hint of appreciation for their business. Working in the restaurant business is incredibly difficult--I have both waited tables and tended bar. People in the food and hospitality industry are hard- working and deserve respect. But customers also deserve respect. When I spend money in a restaurant, I want good food but I also want good service--whether it is fine dining or a bar. Is it too much to ask for a friendly "hello" and maybe even a "thank you" when you leave? I actually left Union Pub angry that I spent money there this afternoon. Of all the challenges that come with working in a restaurant and in customer service, making customers feel welcome and appreciated shouldn't be one of them. read more

First visit here they have bottomless drinks including mimosas, bloody Mary's, French 75, white sangria, peach Bellini, and peach John daly from 11-3 for $20. They have charging locations at the bar and good service. I'm sure I will be returning often. read more

I was in town for work and wanted to go out for a drink, and this place was perfect! They have great bar food, I ordered the spicy chicken quesadilla and was not disappointed. It was busy because it was a Friday night but the staff was super attentive and friendly despite the crowd. They have a patio wth heaters which made for a great area to have some drinks with friends. My trivia team stopped coming here for pub trivia because the cheating is rampant AND the hosts sometimes get the answers wrong but won't admit it. I've been here several times, albeit mostly to watch Nebraska Cornhusker football on Saturdays. This is the official watchsite of the Huskers in DC alumni group, where Husker fans young and old congregate to watch the beloved 'Skers - and they get down. There is actually a video on YouTube.com that chronicles the final play of the game-winning touchdown against Texas A&M, and it is crazy. Unfortunately, I had to miss this particular spectacle because I was in NYC, watching the game at the Husker NYC alumni association watchsite. But I digress. This place has reasonable prices and good food, with lots of room inside and a good-sized outdoor beergarden. I've only actually eaten here once, having a big plate of chili-cheese fries - delicious. I've been here once on a non-football night - I believe it was a Wednesday. There was a mix of younger kids and older, blue-collar folks. A group of older patrons actually sat me down, bought me a beer, and bummed me a few cigarettes. I later got into a conversation about Christopher Hitchens with a young-Republican type. All-in-all, I've never had a less-than good time here. read more

I came with a group for lunch and had pretty low expectations, based on some of the reviews here. The service was poor, as others have noted - one waiter seemed attentive, but I wondered if ours had forgotten about us (on a slow day). The food was surprisingly good, though! I had the mushroom fritter, which is essentially a veggie burger (not what I pictured from the word "fritter," but very flavorful and filling). Do note though that there's a 50c surcharge for sweet potato fries, which no one bothered to tell me at any point. Overall, it was expensive, but I liked my meal and would order that dish again if someone else picked this restaurant. read more

When I closed out she continuously insisted i had dropped it, did not look behind the bar for longer than 15 seconds & participated in a joke with another customer at my expense for 'losing' my card. Came here for brunch and loved everything about it. The bottomless mimosas were very good. Could have used a bit more champagne, but I'm biased. The Firehouse Bloody Mary was very good, and garnished with jalapeno, pepperoni, and olive. The eggs Benedict was very good, highly recommend. The home fries were amazing. The perfect amount of brown and they had a good spicing. The service could have been better. There's a nice patio area too so if you find your self staying in the Capitol Hill area it'd make a good bar that's close enough to walk. read more

A standard sports bar with a decent patio. The beers were reasonably priced for happy hour, but the chips were too salty. I guess if you're trying to sell more beer, adding a ton of salt will help encourage more drinking. This is the site of the DC Chapter of the University of Nebraska Alumni Association sponsored football watch parties. Union Pub always attracts a good crowd for Husker games. With everyone dressed in red, cheering wildly and singing the fight song after every score, it feels like someone took a little slice of Nebraska and dropped it a few blocks from Union Station. As a Capitol Hill dweller and a rabid Nebraska fan, I absolutely love this place. The bartenders always take care of me, sliding an extra beer or shot my way, and the crowd is always friendly. Just don't come in during the Nebraska game and expect to watch anything else! read more

Decent laid back bar in the neighborhood. It gets bonus points from me for being a Chicago Bears bar. Other then that I was vastly underwhelmed. The service wasn't that great even though they weren't very busy (I went to the bar twice since the waitress was nowhere to be found), the prices seemed a little high and their beer selection isn't all that great. Went for HH before a show at Ebenezer's Coffeehouse. On Friday from 4-7, it is $3 rail drinks. The patio was crowded so we were stuck inside on a nice day.The bartender was inconsistent on how heavy the drinks were but we received great service. We also ordered a basket of tots for $6. I thought it was pricey but when they arrived at the table, it was worth it. We pretty much got a whole bag o' tots served to us! The dipping sauce was delish. If I lived closer to this place, I would frequent more often. read more
