mmm, bacon...
Pam Z.

Authentic DC half-smokes smack dab in the middle of Eastern Market (they didn't drum down their recipe for mass production like some other unmentionables). What is a half smoke you ask? A sausage that is half beef, half pork, smoked, and less finely textured than a hot dog native to DC. Definitely a treat! Pick one up if you're not able to wait in line for the Market Lunch. I also go to Union for their **divine** bacon @ least once a week. Will I most likely have to stop this habit by 30? Yes. But until then, medium-cut skin off smoked bacon is my pig portion of choice. **AND** it's the kind of bacon grease that my chef roommate begs me to keep for cooking. ($3.49/lb I believe) Their pepper bacon is also super tasty if a bit pricey ($3.89/lb) The grease is great for breakfast potatoes, pancakes, or making eggs. Toaster oven @ 350 degrees for 15 minutes, and you get perfect bacon! (I am a klutz and will burn it on the stovetop...or burn myself) Breakfast sausage is sweet and savory, and perfect with syrup for pancakes. Their other sausages are also good, but a little on the big side for me, which leads me to... **Loose country sausage** THIS is the big moneysaver folks. You can get it loose, just brown it and add whatever you do for red sauce and veggies in pasta. Or brown it with breakfast potatoes to make some awesome hash. ($2 something /lb) Eventually I'll make enough money to buy some nice cuts of meat here. Also, Union meat will sharpen your knives! ($3/knife or $10/4 knives) The only con: I'm short (5'2") and sometimes it's hard to flag down a guy behind the counter.

Best meat ever. Roy and Billy rock!!

This is the Best Place to buy meat in DC. The guys who own and work there are super accommodating and helpful. That would be Roy, Billy or D. Tell them I sent you....

When I used to live in DC seven years ago, I would come here for a half smoke every time I was at Eastern Market.

THESE ARE SUPPOSED TO BE ALREADY CLEAN CHITTERLINGS!!!…read more Let me say this!I use to by clean them yourself chitterlings before they start selling pre-clean chitterlings. I HAVE NEVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE THIS BEFORE IN MY LIFETIME OF CLEANING CHITTERLINGS!!!!!!!! I spent well over a 150 dollars for this!!In which pre-clean chitterlings are way more expensive then self-clean.Self-clean you may pay 20 dollars less then the pre-clean ones. I asked the sales associates 3 times are these the already clean ones?they both said yes.I took the chitterlings out the freezer ready to pre-clean them again, anybody who knows about chitterlings, knows that you just don't throw them in a pot without going over them again, because even with the pre-clean chitterlings you my have a bad one slip throw.BUT THESE CHITTERLINGS ARE TRULY A DEATH SENTENCE IF YOU DONT NO ANY BETTER.i have also shared the msg and pictures with the BBB,FDA,They should be fine for selling something like this.If you look at the pictures close up!you will see the hogs rectal area in the pictures.I am begging anyone who buy anything from this vendor BE WARE!!!

Half Street Central Farm Market - Metro Microgreens

Of all the farmers markets nearby on a Saturday morning, my partner and I decided on Half Street…read more It's dog friendly and open later than most farm markets (9am-1:30pm) which were two major reasons that led us here. It's right by the Nationals stadium, as well as really great food places like Andy's pizza, sweet green, cava, Rasa, and Atlas brewery. You can truly make a whole trip and afternoon out of it. The market itself has a really nice variety, with some vendors that give out samples. Expect to find fresh local produce, homemade candles, flowers, micro greens, handmade pasta, teas made from tea masters, wild caught fish, uncured meats, raw local honey, and delicious eats on the go like empanadas, sandwiches, pastries and fresh coffee. There's also live music and places to sit in the middle of the market. Be wary of the parking situation. If you're lucky you can find some parking; if not be prepared to park far. It's also right off the green line if you decide to metro instead. Highly recommend Half Street Farmer's Market!

It definitely helps that there's another market closer to me now, instead of having to go all the way over to the Eastern market. This is definitely a scale down version of the Eastern market, but definitely worth the visit. Ironically, I visited this market and the Easter market on the same day. I really love both of these markets!

We came here twice during our most recent stay in Washington DC. We appreciated the variety of…read moresandwiches and thoughtfulness in the prices that reflected increased/decreased toppings. We also really appreciated the friendly service and staff members we came across during our time there. The first day I ordered an everything bagel with veggies and cream cheese -- I took out the bacon and the price of the sandwich decreased by $3. The second time I ordered an egg and cheese everything bagel with avocado and latke. The latke was just okay and didn't add much to my sandwich. The everything bagels were really good as well with plenty of seasoning but I think they were a little tougher for our taste (a perfect bagel would be crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, but the inside was a little tough and the outside wasn't crispy). For a coffee, two bagels, tax and tip, we paid about $32, so they are a bit on the pricier side. But the staff are very kind to the community. The place gets super busy around 9 am, so we learned to just order online the next time and our food was ready within 15 minutes. Other people and us on the first day were waiting over 20 minutes otherwise for our food, which I know can be frustrating. Very popular bagel shop.
