Stopped into their new location in the New City Plaza on a whim since I was early for a movie across the street. According to the waiter, they moved to this location 2-3 weeks ago. The ambiance is pretty standard. I stopped in around 245pm on a weekday. Started with a beer and the pork gyoza--was told they only had veggie so went with that. The gyoza was delicious and chili oil with it was pretty flavorful too, but I do wish it had some chili flakes and texture in it instead of just oil. I also had a spicy tuna roll and the waiter was talking about a new cocktail he was experimenting with so I ordered one of those too. Both things were delicious! I think for the ambiance the menu seems a bit overpriced but the service was amazing and the food was fresh and tasty.

Overall this place was just okay. Our service was pretty poor. Our server was nice, but the food came out extremely staggered and the staff seemed as if they didnt know what we ordered. We ordered edemame to start out, and a few minutes later we were asked if we ordered a 2nd order which we had not. After a few minutes of ordering, I recieved one of my sushi rolls within a couple minutes, and we all received our food at different times, including the last person in our group to receive her food halfway through all of us finishing eating. The sushi was just average. It was not worth the price compared to other sushi places - the sushi just did not seem fresh.

Came here to celebrate my son's birthday. When I lived in Chicago many years ago, this was one of my fav restaurants. We had reservations and the place was not busy at all on a Thursday evening. The manager greeted us and was also our server for the evening. She mentioned that Union Sushi has a change in ownership and that the menu may get an overhaul. We had a bunch of items from the sushi menu as well as a couple of items from the BBQ menu. From the BBQ menu, we had the Shrimp skewer and the prime skirt steak. Both were perfectly grilled, delicious and flavorful. From the sushi+negiri menu, we had the creamy scallop crispy rice. The manager recommended this and it was so good. Also had a number of sushi items: unagi, ebi, maguro and madai. All were fresh and delicious. We also had the ebi ten. For cocktails we had the lychee martini and old fashioned. Both were good. I loved that the lychee martini really had a nice lychee flavor to it. You can really tell it was lychee! While everything tasted great, I thought it was pricey for the portions served. Will be interesting to see what changes are being contemplated with the new ownership.

Our waitress A was a sweetheart but the food was average. The bbq is better than the sushi, highly recommend the pork ribs or the lamb chops

Great sushi and drinks in fun atmosphere with a large sushi counter and open bbq grill. The Smoke Show was a delicious mezcal drink, which paired well with my yellowtail negiri, salmon avacado roll and spider roll.

We sat at the sushi bar and the sushi chefs were kind. Tasty sushi (we got the madei chili which had nice heat and the signature roll with sushi -- both very good) and we enjoyed the dragontinis. However, the vibes and energy were very off when it came to the staff and their interactions.

We tried a few different sushi rolls and all of them were pretty good. You can tell that the fish is fresh and the ratio between the filling and the rice was perfect. They had some tempura rolls that were tasty as well. I'd like to come back and try more of their bbq options. The interior is also nice, could be a good place for an easy dinner.

My friend and I stumbled in here after a Pilates class. We opted for 2 different types of sushi: Spider and caterpillar. IT DID NOT DISAPPOINT! MUST TRY

I cannot speak to the service or ambiance because I got it delivered through GrubHub. The Alaskan roll was pretty good -- a little expensive though. The zucchini skewers were good. They probably had a little too much on them for me. In terms of the chicken karage, it was spicier than I prefer. I am obsessed with the chicken karage at Gyu Kaku and was hoping this would be similar. This place might be good for people who like extra on everything. That just happens to not be me.

Friendly staff, good happy hour selections. Spicy tuna roll is just about the right amount of spice. The shrimp tempura roll is very good too.

My best friend and I came for dinner as we are huge sushi lovers! We parked at a nearby parking lot and walked less than a mile to the restaurant. We were greeted by the host and immediately loved the vibe of the place. It was moderately loud and pretty vibrant, perfect place for a night on the town. We were seated upstairs and we loved the view of the restaurant from our table. We started with cocktails, I had a signature cocktail (I don't remember the name of it but I know it had ginger beer in it and came in a copper cup). My best friend had a classic French 75, we loved the cocktails. The appetizers were pretty good, we had the calamari and our favorite was the Truffled Tuna. I had the Pacific Coast roll and my friend had the Hotate Volcano roll. We absolutely loved the food! We had great conversation with the bartender who was super friendly. We will definitely be back!

We swung by union sushi to grab supper and some happy hour drinks. Our fellow Yelp elite friend suggested this place. You can always trust a Yelp elite for great suggestions and as expected, this place didn't disappoint. We took full advantage of the happy hour by ordering the French 75, a mule and some house sake. This place had decent vegetarian options and we ordered the zucchini skewers, shiitake chive sushi and some chicken karaage. I love the fact that they let you customize the sushi to make it vegetarian. The server was very sweet too. The ambience was nice and clean with tons of seating. The only con is that their menu online is not up to date. Otherwise, this is such a great hidden gem and I will definitely be back.

Great place for happy hour or dinner with a group. We went on a Friday evening and it wasn't too busy, the atmosphere was chill and we didn't have to wait to get a table. I could even hear the train as it went by every ten-ish minutes. For appetizers I recommend the seafood tempura and the edamame. Next time I'm back I want to explore more from the Barbecue menu. We really enjoyed the spicy tuna crispy rice and the madai chili specialty sushi roll.

    Do they split checks?

    Yes

Do they still have happy hour? What are the hours?

No they don’t! Their website says they do but it’s only for double points if you’re a rewards member. No food or drink deals

Do they have a private party room or space to host a party of 40ish people?

They do. There's a mezzanine level for events. It looked really cool from what I could see. Check out their website & give them a call.

It's really cool in here because you can watch them make the Okonomiyaki in front of you! They had like a set meal going on which included soup and okonomiyaki and dessert, which was mochi donuts. I will say I didn't really enjoy the mochi donuts but I was so full I couldn't eat them until later so it may have been because they weren't as fresh and got hard. We had to make a late reservation since nothing was available earlier. We tried walking in earlier and there was a 1 hour and 45 min wait. So we kept our reservation for 9:30. Upon entering, the manager and the host were very friendly and promptly sat us about 15 min early. The ambiance is really nice, but the music... is way to loud. You have to yell across a standard 4-seat tabletop to communicate. Since everyone has to yell, the crowd noise then amplifies this issue. I've never understood restaurants that try to be a nightclub. You can have music at normal levels to keep the energy without causing your patrons to yell. Once we were seated, the waitress came over within 5 minutes. She was friendly, but slow. After she offered us water, she was didn't return to the table for 20 minutes to take drink orders. After we ordered drinks, it was another 15-20 to help with the menus. We asked about portion sizes (shareable vs not shareable). We were told each plate was good for 2-4 people. I'm not sure what portion sizes she classified suitable for sharing... but no way were a majority of our dishes enough to share. We ordered edamame, which we were able to share. We really liked how they salted it, sometimes you get edamame and it's bland. We also ordered spicy tuna sushi (6 pieces), Komodo sushi rolls, pork chops (comes with 2 pieces), 2 orders of wagyu sliders (only 2 per order), hotate batayaki (3 scallops), shishito peppers (8 grilled peppers), and yakatori don (chicken bowl with rice and a soft egg). I have tried many Japanese restaurants and have been to Japan as well. Loved the food. To start with the good, we really liked the pork chops. They were on the rarer cooked side but delicious. The sliders were really good as well. Tons of flavor and each one was a decent size. These 2 items we felt were slightly over priced but felt we got a great food experience for the money. The shishito peppers were barely grilled and bland. They literally were no better than what my teenagers can do on the grill. Absolutely not worth $12 for peppers. Each sushi roll was decent but very small very overpriced for what you get. There is nothing special about either roll. I have gotten better spicy tuna in the city, that comes with 8 rolls for half of momotaro's price. The scallops were very fishy. I love scallops, and I wouldn't order these again... no way! $22 for such. Small serving that was too fishy compared to other establishments. My chicken bowl yakatori don) had a great presentation. That's where the dish ends. The toppings overpowered the chicken. The chicken tasted like plain boiled chicken that was so bland, literally no flavor to it. After we were done, the waitress came over about 15 min later, asking if we were interested in dessert. We told her no, we were full and ready for the check. We sat around for over 20 minutes waiting. I'm watching our server talking in the corner with 4 other servers. Laughing, on their phones, etc. after watching them for over 10 minutes I walked up to the front host and asked for a manager. The girl, was prompt, and very friendly. I discussed my dissatisfaction with the service. It was slow, terrible for the price point of the restaurant. The manager brought the check to me fairly quickly and apologized. She didn't ask what they could do to make it right, nothing. Not until after the bill was paid she conveniently asked what they could do. Little late at that point. Overall, we have been to many low and high end restaurants in Chicago... River North, West Loop,, Manhattan, Munich, etc... and this was about as bad of service as you can get. With all the options in the city, I don't recommend this one.

They have indoor and outdoor seating as well as boots that stretch into the back of the restaurant. It's a very nice date spot or family spot because they do have picnic tables outside as well. Now for the food, the quality of ingredients here is beyond exceptional. They use fresh ingredients and you can tell immediately. The fish is fresh and the combinations for the specialty rolls are out of this world. The rice is nice and soft and doesn't feel old like most places. The way it's written implies that you can choose an udon from the udon section, not the case. Minor gripe, but annoying nonetheless. The maki is fine, spicy tuna was bland but decent quality and the shrimp tempura maki was good but also lacking. Personally I prefer a spicy tuna with more tuna texture and this is basically puree, personal preference I guess. The udon is where my meal fell apart. For a lunch menu focusing on udon I expected a more flavorful broth and noodles that weren't overcooked. It's not like the underlying flavor is bad or anything, it's just barely there at all. The dashi is very weak and one dimensional, and the noodles taste like plain flour with a spongy overly soft bite. The toppings are extremely basic, I can't even comment on them because I'm not sure if I hallucinated them having any flavor or not. They might as well not exist. The shredded cabbage side salad is also mediocre. Dressing was weak and the cabbage could've been cut thinner. The 23-course Omakase ($890 total for two, including two drinks) was culinary perfection, exquisitely crafted, beautifully presented, and fascinating to watch from the bar seating. The restaurant's interior is clean, moody, and Zen-like with dramatic lighting on the prep area. It starts off pin-drop silent, but as the night progresses, the room warms up into a pleasant communal energy. Unfortunately, the service did not match the quality of the food. The atmosphere among the staff was cold and stiff. Roles were confusing (asking for a oaper napkin resulted in odd glares), and when my guest unrolled their wet towel (oshibori), a staff member scolded them for not "pinching" it correctly. Furthermore, after calling ahead regarding a birthday, I was told they couldn't accommodate a candle or small dessert. Handing out a signed paper menu at the end of the night feels like a cheap substitute for real celebratory effort at a Michelin-level price tag. The chefs are brilliantly trained, but the awkward hospitality and rigid micro-aggressions meant we left without that warm, satisfied feeling you expect from fine dining. Great food, but the overall guest experience needs work.
