I try to keep it pretty basic when trying a sushi spot for the first time to assess the quality of the fish - got both a tuna roll and a salmon avocado roll. Both were good, the tuna especially. I love this little neighborhood sushi spot. I've ordered from them once for take-out at the beginning of the pandemic but if could splurge on fresh sushi and sashimi more often, I'd splurge here! I ordered the sushi platter they had 7 pieces of nigiri (sliced raw fish over rice). I remember the fish being so fresh it had a hint of sweetness. It was the freshest fresh I've had in awhile. I also got a California roll and my subtotal hit the price point (I think $25?) where I could get a complimentary order of crab rangoon. Winning. When I picked up my order, they had tables that divided their dining room so that pick-up was sectioned off from their staff/kitchen. They gave me a bottle of their house-made sanitizer. At the time, I believe they were giving these away to all of their customers as a gift. I loved that soft touch, and it felt very neighborly. Upon reflection, it felt like a care package even though I was just picking up my order. To me, it was a "stay safe out there, I'm looking out for you" send off as I made my way home with my food, even though the only words I had exchanged in the restaurant were "pick up for Eva" and "thank you." read more

As an uni lover, I came in excited just based off the restaurant name but I left disappointed. For a place whose name has uni in the title, you'd expect that they'd give more than what they did. Ordered uni shooters that barely had any uni in it. The raw egg was bigger than the amount of uni they gave. The uni donburi had more rice and sides than uni in it. Felt ripped off to order items that were named uni just to barely get any in my food. Uni was more of a side compliment in those dishes rather than the main highlight. Uni is not cheap. But I feel like what I paid was not worth what I got especially when I came for uni, barely got any, but was still charged for high uni prices. I would rate it a one star but the service was good and polite which is why I added another star. Mainly because we were the only ones there. We did order other pieces of sushi. As someone who rarely posts reviews, I felt so disrespected by the restaurant manager at Uni Sushi. Pretty much, I ordered two servings of the Negitoro roll - when I received the delivery, it appeared they mixed it up with negi hamachi roll (yellowtail). I called to let them know, since the negitoro is more expensive. Except the manager messaged me saying verbatim "anyone else will most definitely know the difference" between the negitoro and negi hamachi rolls. Unfortunately, after tasting it, my wife and I were certain it wasn't tuna, but rather, yellowtail, as it had the fishier taste to it. I wasn't mad they got the order wrong, but I definitely felt like the restaurant should've corrected their error. Instead, the pushback I got was inappropriate and not indicative of a good business. You do you, but I'll be avoiding Uni Sushi from now on. See posted photos and tell me the gray fish is "toro". read more

Crab Rangoon was pretty good, but definitely mostly cream cheese filling. I ordered 1 tuna nigiri and 1 salmon nigiri. They both looked really good, but unfortunately the freshness didn't follow. The tuna was okay but not very good, the salmon was inedible, mushy fish that I did not trust to even swallow my one bite. Lastly, I got pork belly ramen. I'm a big garlic fan, but the broth was super garlicky, but my real issue is with the pork. One of the pieces was completely raw. My experience here was above and beyond all my hopes and expectations for a well prepared and authentic poke bowl In fact I asked if miso soup was included and initially my friendly server told me that miso soup isn't included with poke bowl. Five minutes later she said the chef would be happy to prepare a miso soup for me and she asked me if I'd prefer it spicy or mild so I asked for the spicy version and she presented me with a very generous bowl of hot, spicy broth with scallions, mushrooms tofu and peppers which were savory and delicious. When my poke bowl trio came out I was super excited at the beautiful presentation and the vibrant colors of fresh cubes of fish fresh mango chunks, sushi rice, seaweed and edamame... The food here is absolutely fresh, flavorful and clean tasting and it's obvious to me the chef has a high skill set and understands how to prepare sushi and Japanese cuisine. My gluten free / food allergen friends, I would be cautious to eat here. Long story short, after many many confirmations about ingredients and being gluten free, almost the entire order wasn't. The chef wasnt able to provide a ton of details either. They add sauces to rolls that are outside of the description, so if you think you're safe, you might not be :( Things to watch for, sriracha, eel sauce, the labeled gluten free soy sauce.., anything labeled spicy, anything with oyster sauce (although it wont be mentioned on the menu) Based on the call with them, there wasnt a ton of allergy handling knowledge. When we did see Uni would deliver, my friends had dined in house before so were a bit hesitant...apparently they were out of Uni when they went. Out of uni at Uni!? Salmon Avocado Maki $7.95 - Fresh fish, again well rolled (all their rolls were), liked this one! Bears Signature Maki $12.95 - This roll was my favorite of the bunch with salmon, spicy salmon, tempura crunchy, avocado and crunchy sweet potato! Yaaaas. Loved it and would definitely order this again. Prices weren't bad, sushi makis were tasty and delivery was nearly on time which is great for New Year's Eve! Uni is a testament to the quality of food in my neighborhood. The food I tried here for dinner two weeks ago was good, above average for sure, in confines that I like with prices that are fair. We had the tempura (Mori Awase) and the Bears roll, both of which were great. Throwing in a can of Coke is only a buck, so for our small snack we got out for about $25. The problem here isn't Uni, it's that I have too many choices. I think Kai Zan is the best sushi spot (best Japanese restaurant, really) in Chicago, but we do a lot of time at Yuzu on Chicago, and Arami is a well-established strength in this zip code too. I don't think Uni compares to those, but if I lived on North Avenue closer to Uni? I'd be there all the time. Tasty. I'm not sure I'll be back given my choices, though. read more

The flavors kind of combined instead of enhancing each other. If you don't love a fishy taste, this might be a great place for you. I made a trip from Evanston all the way to Wicker Park for nothing -___- Instead, we ordered the Spicy Tuna Roll (free with Yelp deal), Kalbi Robata (average), Bacon Wrapped Scallop Robata (probably my favorite), Chirashi (also average), Pork Belly Ramen (just okay, not as good as the tonkatsu ramen at Wasabi). While nothing was necessarily bad, nothing was amazing either. I definitely recommend that you call the restaurant beforehand to ask if they have Uni, because nothing else on the menu is worth making a special trip for. As someone having lived in Boston for quite some years, I've been longing for some uni for a long time. When I found some place on Yelp, I couldn't describe in words the excitement I had. When it comes to uni, the three most important criteria are FRESH, FRESH, and FRESH. The uni here was clearly very fresh, and was largely intact. That sweet, creamy, and slightly briny ocean taste was exactly how I remembered it. But here comes the cons... My boyfriend and I both ordered the uni don. The uni itself was spectacular and right on point. But some of the salmon roe were not very fresh, with that unpleasant fishy aftertaste, to the extent where it almost ruined my dining experience. The avocado on the side was not properly ripened. It lost that creamy texture. It was firm, while tasting raw and a bit bitter. To make things worse, the seasoned rice on the bottom didn't have the correct combination of seasoning. And I would assume that those rice had been leaving out for a long time. They were ice cold, tough, and clumpy, which were never good things when it came to rice. I would give 10 stars to the uni itself. And for the sides? Negative 6 stars... If you are coming for the uni, I would recommend you just try the uni shooter or uni a la carte. That's the best way to enjoy the uni anyways. read more

I'm not a big fan of fried stuff or sticky sweet unagi sauce in my maki, so I opt for the Hawks roll. Very tasty! The nigiri is fresh and uni portion generous. Maybe that's why they're called Uni... Considering it was delivered, I was impressed with the presentation. The robata items were cold and all soaked in the sauce from one particular item. I think if it was separated and wrapped in tin foil, it would have arrived in better condition. Maybe something to request in the future. I'm surprised that this is my first time dining here. I stopped by Uni Sushi for dinner with a friend over the weekend. I made a reservation just in case, but the restaurant was actually pretty empty when we got there. I did notice that there were a ton of orders that were prepared for delivery, however. My friend and I ordered the Uni Don, Crunchy Spicy Salmon Maki, Crunchy Spicy Tuna Maki, and Unagi Avocado Maki to share. The presentation of the Uni Don was beautiful. This was not the best uni I have had in my life, but the uni was pretty decent tasting and there was a sizable amount in the dish. Both of the Crunchy Spicy Maki rolls we ordered were pretty tasty (the salmon and the tuna). I liked the crunchy exterior and the sauces that were added. The Unagi Avocado Maki was pretty standard. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't anything special. I preferred the Crunchy Spicy Maki rolls we ordered over the Unagi Avocadi Maki. Overall, I was pleased with the amount and quality of food we received for the price we paid. I was super disappointed in this place. Came here by myself since I was in the mood for sushi. Place was empty and every time I come psst this place its always empty. But despite my gut instinct I decided to give this place a try. When I came in no one greeted me or sat me. It took a good while and an eerie glare to get their attention so i could be helped. The waiter did not explain the menu at all or make suggestions, he just set it down and walked away. Having no clue I opted for the traditional godzilla roll. My food came out shortly. Presentation was nicely decorated. But taste wise was not what I expected. This has to be one of the saltiest and blandest rolls. I was super disappointed. For $14 I expected so much more. Interior: Love the wooden walls (could be a good background photo for portraits, you just need more focused lights) and the area is somewhat spacious so thats good. Perfect place for a romantic night or dates cause its quite dim and to add a little cherry on top, they put on real candle lights (not battery candles). There is a sushi bar at the end if you are interested in watching them create sushi. In addition, they got nice black booth chairs on one side if you don't feel like sitting on a simple wooden chair. In addition, even though they have one all gendered restroom, it's an extra bonus for cleanliness! Food: In their menu, they got Japanese and Thai food so that's already a great variety. We got their seaweed salad, octopus robata, pad thai, and pork belly ramen. Let me start of with the seaweed salad, it's fresh (you can tell by the color, crisp and crunchiness). Seaweed salad is actually my favorite whenever I go to sushi places. In addition they add slices of cucumbers underneathe which is great because I love to crunch. As for octopus robata, its saucy and sweet. It's beautifully put together and its chewy but not too chewy to the point you're having a hard time biting it off. For the pad thai, they gave A LOT so I'm happy for the portions for a good price. My favorite go to is the ramen! Ive had their ramen before and yesterday was my second time getting another one. Their noodles are springy (google it if you don't know what I mean) and they have 2 mini quail eggs that burst inside your mouth! In addition, there is a good amount of broth in the big bowl of ramen. Last but not the least (my favorite part of the ramen), the pork belly! Oh my, I don't know how they make their pork belly but it is perfectly balanced fat and meat. I don't know how they marinated the meat or however they seasoned it but man! It is absolutely delish! I've ordered delivery twice, this time with another sushi lover. We both agree it's super fresh, crisp vegetables, great flavors, and just delicious. We had bacon wrapped scallops and shrimp and lots of rolls: Godzillal (fan fav), shrimp tempura, soft shell crab without tuna, sweet potato tempura, and the old standby California.
