Very pleased with the Taco Tuesday special! I wasn't expecting to be taken away, but the carne asada and carnitas tacos were spot on delicious. The al pastor tasted more like a stew, and I was disappointed, but it was still good. The (thick) chips are the authentic kind made from tortillas, crispy and salty. They were so good with the salsa and guacamole. There weren't that many people there which surprised me, but their to go window seemed busy. My only complaint is that their salsas are tasty, but mild. Maybe they had something with more heat, but I didn't ask. read more

On Saturday May 2nd was Jeffrey 67-Birthday! We had a Spectacular day. Late Saturday I stop by to bring KYLE his Birthday gift. He was out of town. This is the third (Tres) of the Underdogs, 1 Cantina 2 Too 3 Tres. This one is like Taqueria meets Sports Bar in the Inner Richmond 9th and Irving food corridor a block from GGP. 5 of us came and we all got our own protein version of the Nick's Way single taco, all about $8.50. This is a very large handful, with a crispy taco shell surrounded by a soft tortilla, stuffed with loads of Pico De Gallo, brown beans, guacamole, and of course your protein. I got the Pollo Asado. Been a minute since I left a review -- still a massive fan of this place. I've only been to their Too and Tres locations (and when Tres was on Irving at 19th Ave years ago) and as I alluded to in my previous reviews, the thing that always sticks out for me is how happy the staff is here -- at both these locations -- and it's been that way for about ten years now. As I told manager Osprey tonight, if anyone is unhappy they're doing a great job faking it. She laughed and said they have a great team where everyone likes each other and they all work well together. Indeed! The food, of course, is still killer and I enjoyed another bowl of Tortilla Soup that was even better than I've had before. It seems slightly less acidic and just a hint of creaminess, and abundant chicken. Flautas (essentially taquitos) are great, my sister enjoyed her steak quesadilla and I went to a place of bliss enjoying my elote con queso -- the best I've had anywhere. Since I live in Pacifica, I'm more apt to go to Underdogs Too in the Outer Sunset but nice to come and and visit Tres here on 9th -- especially given the incredible staff. The location of Underdogs Tres at Irving and 9th in the Inner Sunset cannot be beat. The happy hour for drinks and food is extremely popular with my friends, and after going with them I can see why. I tried the Taco Nick style, which I highly recommend. It's definitely on the heavier side and I could only eat one, but for the price you really can't beat it. It's super satisfying if you're craving something indulgent. The chips and guacamole were delicious, and the ambience is fun and casual. There's even a quirky painting of a llama in one of the bathrooms that made me laugh (a small detail but memorable) I would definitely come back, though I personally have to be a little careful with all the oils on the chips and tortillas. I'd say 3.5 stars But the bland side of beans and rice knock it down to 3. I'm really picky about my Mexican food. The agua fresca honey dew was delicious!!! The mango agua fresca was good too. The side of elote was good - you can even ask for it off the cob! The kiddo enjoyed the 3 street tacos - 2 carne asada and 1 carnitas. I ordered the veggie street tacos - 3 for $13.50, which I thought was a decent price for SF. The veggies were mostly cabbage and roast corn, which tasted yummy but would've loved more veggie variety. This is the kind of place that every neighborhood needs. Great food with an inventive blend of things that are comforting and familiar but done a little differently. Chips and guacamole come with a huge helping of pico de Gallo, the carne asada California burrito was excellent, and my friend really liked her flautas, especially the carrot flauta that she got without knowing what to expect. Good spot near the 9th and Irving shopping/food area! Underdog Tres is usually more crowded in the evenings and on the weekends, but I came recently with my friend and sat indoors. While she ordered a couple of tacos, I ordered their California Burrito with Carne Asada as a bowl. Our orders came out within 10 minutes during lunchtime, and I wish I had ordered the burrito (as I normally do). The burrito portion seems more dense, with crispy fries on the side compared to the bowl having the fries drenched in cheese and being soft. Their menu is diverse and is worth it most during their happy hours and Taco Tuesdays! I would recommend their Taco Tuesday tacos with any meat you choose over going in during a regular time/day to try one of their other selections. read more

This is located on a popular dining street just off the southern edge Golden Gate Park. It's a chill spot to dine in indoors (tables or at the bar) or outdoors (front sidewalk or quiet back patio). You can also order food to go from their takeout window outside. Indoors, there's a TV playing sports. The other wall is lined with a long mirror, which is convenient if you get food stuck in your teeth haha. The servers are very friendly. They have an exxxxxcellent Baja Taco which you must order Nick's Way for all that delicious guac, cheese, and crispy taco shell. I highly recommend it. Their San Francisco Burrito is good too. I had been here once a long time ago and didn't have a good experience because of the customer service and food quality, so I never went back. Today I happened to be in the area and decided to give it another try. I ordered chips and salsa, a Budweiser, and a carne asada quesadilla. Honestly, it was very disappointing. The chips came with maybe two three spoons of chopped tomatoes, a few sprinkles of onion, no sauce, no flavor--nothing. The chips themselves were hard like rocks. I was literally struggling just to get a bit of tomato on each chip, and they kept falling through the basket. It was ridiculous. I thought about leaving, but I was really hungry, so I stayed. The quesadilla took about 30 minutes to come out even though the place wasn't busy. When it finally arrived, it had no flavor at all. Unfortunately, this confirmed my previous experience. I won't be coming back again, and I would suggest others think twice before going. One star is just for the girl who was working there and took my order . She was friendly . They are also very reasonably priced for how much food you are getting. I like that this location has a lot of indoor and outdoor seating. This is a great Mexican restaurant. Great menu and great bar. Nice selection of tap beers as well as a full liquor bar. The space itself is nice and recently freshened up to be extra clean and comfortable. This location also offers outdoor seating. So if the weather is nice, you could sit in the backyard or in front of the restaurant. My wife and I usually get the taco's Nicks way. I like the grilled chicken she likes the vegetarian option. They make two house salsas. They are both pretty fantastic. Don't forget to request them if they don't automatically bring them to your table, which they usually do. First off I got major food poisoning from their chicken soup. So much so that I was throwing up their orange soup for 2 days. Secondly the waitress needs to check her attitude. She asked me what was wrong and I told her there's too much ice in my Horchata and that the soup wasn't hot enough (this of course was before I got home and was throwing it up). She literally starts debating with me that everyone likes a lot of ice in their drinks and that's the way it is. I asked her for a replacement light ice one, and she said I'd have to buy it. Also we arrived 4 minutes before happy hour ended at 6pm and because she didn't get to us in time it ended! So we couldn't get the happy hour tacos. Food is good, except for the chicken soup. The tacos are good and so are the flautas. I had to chase her down to get the coconut pie slice that I ordered with our meal in the beginning. She was MIA and horrible. Underdogs isn't as good as it use to be but still definitely hits when I'm craving a Baja fish taco. Unfortunately during my last visit, the fish had a bit too much batter and the taco shell itself was extremely soggy. Other than that, the flavors are still phenomenal. I love how tangy their red sauce is and it works well with balancing the richness from the fried fish. No other way to get their tacos than Nick's way, but since the outer shell is so soggy, I just remove it and keep the crispy inner shell. Don't forget to ask for more red sauce because it is phenomenal here! The other items are decent but this is the only item I really come here to get. read more

Our party of 10 inevitably found ourselves at Underdogs Tres on a Monday at 5pm because I'm convinced its nigh impossible to make a reservation or walk-in to a spot near irving and 9th for dinner elsewhere. We walked-in without a reservation and were seated immediately in the back patio where there are large picnic bench style tables. It was happy hour, and though they dont have the happy hour prices written down anywhere, our waiter was very patient and helped repeat the entire list multiple times for our large party throughout our meal. - Nachos Son Muy Grande ($14.95): this is a VERY LARGE PORTION. You've been warned, it's probably good for sharing between 2 as a large meal or between 3-4 people as a normal meal. You can add proteins for an additional charge, but even without this is topped with a generous amount of cheese, guac, pico and sour cream, not to mention the green and orange sauce bottles at the table. All atop a giant pile of thick and crispy nacho chips that are almost a little too crunchy. - House Margarita ($5, happy hour): a classic marg without frills that you couldn't ask more of for $5 Underdogs is a great place for large groups and happy hour!
