The cider mill was unfortunately closed when I went mid week during the days it's very family friendly. On weekends it's supposed to be busier and the back bar by the field is open. Go early and find a spot. The cider is pretty good as well, does not taste super artificial fake apple tasting which is a plus. So I stop at this place, Uncle John's Cider Mill. You hear "cider mill" and you're thinkin'--quaint little family spot, maybe some fresh donuts, bit of Americana, right? Nope. I walk up to the counter, ask for two apple fritters, and the lady hits me with "That'll be eight bucks." Eight bucks! For TWO pastries! I'm standing there like, "What, do these fritters come with a trust fund?" Don't get me wrong--they were good, but not eight-dollars-good. For that price I want them to cure my seasonal depression. Then the bathrooms--holy hell. You ever walk into a place and think, "Oh, I guess the zombie apocalypse already happened"? That was the vibe. Floors sticky enough to rip your shoes off, smell like someone's been fermenting cider in there since the '90s. I'm so glad we took the time to stop. We were on our way to Mount Pleasant for an overnight stay and I remembered having driven by this place a few times. Summertime is obviously not their big season, but they certainly try to put things out to get people to come by I was impressed to see a barbecue food truck, although I wasn't hungry. The gift shop was full of interesting little trinkets, very much in the tradition of a roadside attraction. The bakery was well stocked, and I was pleased with the quality of the donuts that we purchased. Michigan cider is hard to screw up, and this place gets it just as good as most of the others. Having it available as a slushy is a nice touch, and it's not something I've had before. On a nearly 90 degree day it was a welcome bit of refreshment. we stopped in with our 36 foot fifth wheel and went almost to the back of the parking lot. We intended to purchase apples, cider and donuts as soon as we got out of the vehicle a person man in a utility vehicle pulled up and said we could not park our vehicle as a crowd was coming in and we had to move immediately. However, there were tons of open spots way before they would come to where we were parked we had planned on taking our dog out and spending a little time. However it was ruined did not expect a family oriented place which seemed to be a very good stop for us on our way to Traverse City. I was passing by on 127 heading back home to Hillsdale county from Clare. We arrived in early afternoon, parking, there over a dozen vehicles, we passed an area for children play area, with many children, and a few adults and parents. Walking to the Pie factory, there were about a dozen people inside, browsing, ordering and sitting. My girlfriend and I went here over the weekend when it was raining so we weren't able to get the full experience but even in the rain it was fun. We got 7 decent pumpkins for $40. The signage overall wasn't very clear. It doesn't state where cars can go and where to park for which features of the cider mill. We got the cider and donuts from the bread shop, and we were disappointed to not be able to purchase cider mill donuts after waiting in that entire line. It would have been a nice touch to know that it was a separate line for those donuts. It was a bit of a turn off to see they have a Kettle Corn tent with the name Kate's Kettle Korn. This place is magical, and we happened to come on the day before the season closed so it was practically empty! Of course, all of the hard cider varieties were so delicious. We had to try the sampler, and the staff were so friendly in helping us set it up. There are plenty of bottles and cans to take home for friends and family. LOVE Uncle John's! It is SO much more than a cider mill, that's for sure! This place is massive, especially coming from SE Michigan where cider mills are truly just cider mills and that's about it. Uncle John's has a whole pumpkin patch you can walk through, cornstalks, apple trees, the whole nine. I'm a big Uncle John's fan, partly as a result of four years spent at Alma College. Overall it's family friendly with a kid's area (though I feel that certain activities are just as fun for adults) and tractor-train ride to go pick pumpkins. For adults they also have wine and hard cider in a separate tasting room. There is a patio to hang out on when the weather is good. Cider and donuts are of course the main attraction but they have a bakery with lots of other donuts, pies, jams, pickled items. And, of course, they also sell apples. During the most recent trip they also had a couple of food trucks. One of the other appealing aspects is the scenery. The main area is set on a small hill and provides a panorama of the surrounding orchards. read more

We love this place, and the people are awesome! They produce a great selection of delicious wines/meads and ciders, as well as offer trendy merch and swag. Today they had a fab food truck and entertainment to enjoy on the patio. It was perfect rest stop one the drive home. We just love this place for so many reasons: 1. Cider-such variety and wonderful flavors 2. Pies-we've had many different flavors and not a bad one yet. My brother-in-law is something of a pie connoisseur and thought they were amazing. We have passed this place on our way to our cottage for years and finally went there. It's much bigger then what you see by the road. Lots of stuff for kids to do, a store, they sell wine and hard cider. The one thing they don't have to our surprise , was donuts that just have sugar and sugar , my husband and I think of them as the typical Cidermill doughnuts. They have powdered cinnamon , butter milk and others, but no old fashioned cinnamon sugar donuts. We were disappointed and did not buy any. A great place to take the kids for sure. read more

I am from Lansing so I've been coming here pretty much all of my life. I love this place and they improve more and more each year! It's a great place for family's and that is a huge plus. So many things to do in one place! They have the best Apple Cider in the world and that is not an exaggeration. It's so fresh, you can watch how it's made, and there isn't a single cider in stores that tastes like it. No fake flavoring. It's also great hot and for the 21+ out there, add some whisky or caramel vodka for a hot adult beverage! You won't regret it. Now the donuts are prime. You can tell the recipe has stayed consistent over the years and it is a great basic donut. I dip it in my cider, call me weird, I don't care. It's amazing. They also have gourmet options now. The fact that they have wine/hard cider tastings is a great addition to this place. I take 6 bottles of wine back to Nashville with me every year. They have a Honey wine that is FANTASTIC!!!!!! They also have a store with baked goods, cheeses, random stuff. Also an area to buy clothing, trinkets, whatever your heart desires. 1/8 cider mill, 7/8 other things to take your money. This is my least favorite cider mill in town. It's gone from a medium size, family feel to a money grab, unfortunately. Maybe every other year or so we come because we forget how commercial feeling it is and I'm reminded why I prefer other places in town. We returned this year and got 1/2 dozen donuts and cider. Not sure what was going on with the donuts but they tasted like grease. Literally left a coating in the mouth. I tasted the oil for two hours afterward, despite eating and drinking other items; it was very distinct. The cider warmed up is good but cold seems flat. Mostly I miss the days of this place not having carnival rides and inflatables and a $3-5 charge for this and that. I get it's a business but personally it turns me off. If this is your kind of thing, bring money and I'm sure your kids will stay busy. They just won't be making memories of family time picking apples--because despite having acres and acres of them, there's no picking. read more

Pick him, or go toward the back and pay to chuck em out of the apple slingshot. Take a hay ride, take part in the special events they hold on site. There are food trucks and pumpkin picking. There is a large kids area, with an inflated trampoline-like think, small train ride, enough to keep the kids smiling and laughing for a while. For the bigger kids, there's the wine tasting room. Explore the world of wines, and fruit wines. Inside the bakery you'll find bottled fresh cider, breads, and sweets. The bacon cheese bread is the best! Next door in the cider barn, take the stairs up top and see them making fresh cider as you sip on your cup of cold (or hot) cider and fresh donuts. I've been to my fair share of orchards in Michigan, and this one truly is one of the best. That's because of the quality of food, service, and variety of events and activities. You can spend several hours here, depending on the season and what's all going on. For a second I thought I might be the first to review this place, but I can see how I am not, this place ROCKS! As far as apple orchards/pumpkin patches go, this is the place to be. There are a number of other farms in the St. Johns area (Andy T's, Becks), but this has always been our family favorite. I've been going since I was 5 (maybe younger), and I doubt that will change anytime soon. This place is fun for both kids and adults. Kids can check out the tricycle track/sand box, jumping pits, inflatable slide, and fruit sling shot. For the adults they now have a winery, where you can try a number of tasty dessert wines. And for all ages, their cider and donuts are without equal. My family and I ordered two dozen, and barely had any leftovers. Heck, any of their food (breads, pies, cookies, etc...) is terrific. Plus you can watch them make fresh cider on a day to day basis. This review is all over the place, but the bottom line is, for family fun for all ages, and super cider, check this place out. I'm tempted to give this place 5 stars simply for their kangaroo jumper alone, but the rest of it deserves the 5 stars also. For those that don't know a kangaroo jumper is like a ridiculous blob that you can jump on and is way better than a trampoline. They also have a really cute bouncy horse track for kids. I went with a friend for the wine tasting and I really enjoyed all the wines and ciders I tasted for FREE. It was awesome, and I ended up buying a bottle of sparkling peach wine. Visit from October 2015....Driving through the area, I got a craving for apples and donuts. This was the first place I saw so I decided to stop. I decided to get a 1/2 dozen donuts and a cup of cider. The cider was generic. Nothing special, not bad either. Served in a tiny cup. The donuts were ok. Could have used more flavor. The cider donut had a tiny bit of cinnamon in it, the pumpkin was about the same. The cinnamon sugar was just like something you could get in the grocery store. The buttermilk was the best, which was the one I was least excited about when I chose them. I forgot to buy an apple (not sure they even had any for sale?). Wish I could have tried the hard apple cider but I had more driving to do that day. I do recommend trying the fudge (they have a strict 1 sample per person policy). I forget the flavor I tried, I think salted caramel peanut or something. That was the best part of the place. read more

What a fun place to visit! We stopped in for a few hours while in Michigan, and it was a fun little get away. Plenty of parking and a little bit of a drive from Lansing, but it was worth it. They have a bar area with wines and ciders to taste. Fresh made donuts in another building. We had one of each- the cinnamon sugar was the best. There were several things for kids outside- jumpy things, maze, train ride. It was rainy and cold when we went, so we didn't see a ton of that going on. You can see how the cider is made, buy some gifts (a little on the higher end, like most gift shops), have some drinks, or eat in the deli. They had lots of baked goods to choose from! The only thing I didn't enjoy was my trip to the restroom- it definitely needed to be cleaned, but as soon as I mentioned it to someone they had it taken care of. Uncle John's is my absolute favorite cider mill. It has the best hours and is open for the majority of the year (maybe even year-round). They make their cider right- unpasteurized- and it's delicious. They even freeze it so you can buy it in the spring! They have cider slushes, which is great for hot days. Their bakery store area has all kinds of breads and pies, although I haven't tried any of those. With your cider, the cider donuts are the only flavor worth buying- other reviewers were absolutely right that most of their donuts just aren't right. We saw the sign on the highway for Apple Cider Slushees. It sounded so good we had to check it out on our way to CMU. I am so glad we stopped. The slushees are very delicious and the donuts are just as good. They have hard cider, too! Cute shops had a lot of Michigan themed items.
