I like their crisp organic-certified cider cold but its still delicious at room temperature. You taste cinnamon in the first couple of sips. Orchard Gate Gold is less fizzy than cidre, which I really miss. I've wanted to press apples at an orchard but I didn't know that it had to be aged or fermented. The alcohol content is about 6%. The waitress said it isn't sweet but its just less so than apple juice. There are no artificial colors or flavors, just added yeast. They sold it during the Great Depression and as "Special Farm Cider" during Prohibition. Named after the current owner's grandparents, this family farm is over 150 years old. This is probably not the best thing to drink for breakfast.

What a delightful find! We stopped by Almar Orchards for the first time last fall, just before Halloween and we've been back twice since and for good reason. This place is a hidden gem. I almost don't want to disclose how nice it is for fear it will become overrun with tourists, but I'll take the risk. I can't believe we had such a find practically in our own backyard- well, not really, but it's close. It's definitely closer than most any other orchard around. It's no problem to just jump in the car and head off to Almar since it's a local spot. With that said, I can't believe I didn't know about this place before. Holy crap, where the heck have I been? They had an adorable little general store filled with all sorts of crazy goodness- from organic cider (both pasteurized and non-pasteurized and non-alcoholic and "hard" varieties), apples and pumpkins to meat and dairy products, jellies, jams, applesauce, spreads, dips, dressings, and seasonings to scrumptious doughnuts- it was obvious this place had it all. The doughnuts (they come in about four different varieties, I believe) were splendid. They were cheap, too- only about $7 for a dozen. They'll do mix and match for you as well or prorate the amount per doughnut. The regular apple and glazed varieties were the best- they tasted so good coming fresh out of the fryer. Mike, "the doughnut guy" told me their "special" secret- they infused the doughnuts with Almar's signature apple cider. Okay, maybe that wasn't such a secret seeing as how he told me with no compunction about divulging such a trade secret. They were pretty loose with the free tasting of their hard ciders. I think I tried at least four or five, I quit counting. The samples were pretty generous and on an empty stomach, it probably wasn't the best idea. I got a little buzzed from all the sampling. As long as you're 21 and provide ID, you can sample the wares! There was quite a crowd gathering around for a taste of the good stuff. Both their regular and hard ciders were amazing and reasonably priced. I've become quite the devotee of their J.K. Scrumpy's cider. That's reason enough to go back time and again. Their regular hot cider was so good, too. Both were outstanding. Try it once and become a fan for life. The apple orchard and pumpkin patch outside were nice, plus there's a little farm in the back with animals, including reindeer. However, every time I've been there and tried to snap a picture of those reindeer, they must have been grouchy or something because they always retreated to their barn when too many tourists were around. Bummer. This place is great for kids. There's even a play area and picnic tables outside. Unlike most orchards, they aren't seasonal. They're open year-round, which means more opportunities to stock up on that delicious cider.

Awesome experience . . . we had the most wonderful time visiting the store, the farm, and the cider making/bottling facility. I drove all the way from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to check it out, and I was not disappointed. For one thing, they are really receptive to people on facebook. I had mentioned on their page that I was traveling up, and Jessica, stayed in touch, letting me know that they were closing early due to snow (I was driving in that snowstorm, and my travel plans changed from visiting late-Wednesday to Thursday morning), and I asked her to save me some donuts, and she did. They were waiting for me with my name on them when we arrived (They were YUMMY too (we had two kinds, maple and vanilla glazed)). After introducing ourselves, Jessica gave us samples to try of their Switchels, which are sorta like an Apple Vinegar Kombucha (delicious, and healthy for you too). Also, she introduced me to Jim (AKA J.K.), and he offered to give us a quick tour of the cider bottling line which was in action, and that was neat. He also showed us a few other parts of the facility, including the blending tank, the fermentation area, and the pasteurization tanks. He was very descriptive, and I really enjoyed meeting him, and seeing some of the behind-the-scenes areas. In the store, Kerry (Keri?), was very nice, and I bought all kinds of things to take back to Pennsylvania, including several varieties of J.K.'s Hard Ciders (Bottles, Cans, and a Growler), a case of all four flavors of Switchel, about 6 or 7 blocks of raw-milk cheeses, a bag of apples, a cool long-sleeved t-shirt, a couple corks, and of course the donuts. After I made my purchases and loaded up my vehicle, I went outside and checked out the playground area (it was cold and snowy, so nobody was playing that day) which had all kinds of fun-looking stuff including a teepee, and the barnyard animals out back. They had Guinea Hens (that announced my arrival with very loud alarming sounds), piggies, and a horse. The pigs all came over to me to say hello, they were so cute. And that was my visit to Almar Orchards, home of J.K.'s Skrumpy Organic Ciders, my all-time favorite cider available commercially. It sure was worth the visit, and I hope to come back again, hopefully when it is warmer, and fill up my growler, and enjoy your place again. THANKS FOR EVERYTHING, Jessica, Kerry, all the guys in the cidery, and of course, the man himself, Jim "J.K.", the namesake of J.K.'s Skrumpy, and a special shout out to all the barnyard animals, including the two most wonderful farm dogs in the world, they were so friendly, and wanted to be petted and cuddled (I would've taken them home with me if I could've) . . . Cheers!

They have the best apple donuts ever! The cider is good, but the donuts are worth the trip on a fall morning.

However, during our most recent visit, we noticed quite a few changes from previous years, and unfortunately, not all for the better. They no longer have the scenic hayride that used to include a free donut and a cup of apple cider with your ticket purchase. Now, it's $5 per person, and instead of a peaceful scenic ride, it stops at every station and they no longer give you a donut & cider with ticket purchase. When we asked about the change, we were told it was because they weren't making money off the old setup. I understand businesses need to adjust, but it really took away from the experience. That scenic ride with the cider and donut was always one of the highlights for us ; something we truly looked forward to every year. They did add more bouncy houses for the kids, which is nice, but the ones they had before were just as fun. The food was about the same, decent, but nothing special. It was noticeably more expensive this year. $5 for a single ear of corn felt excessive. On the positive side, the cinnamon donuts are still amazing, and the apple cider is as delicious as ever. I also enjoyed the wine tasting, which is always fun, though seating is still limited and could be improved. Overall, the visit just didn't have the same charm or warmth as before. We still had an okay time, but it didn't feel as memorable as past years. Sadly, I think this might be our last year visiting, we'll probably look for a new orchard next fall.

The fresh donuts are fresh, warm and delicious! Get more than you want, because you WILL want another one. The cider is really good and it's lovely that you can get a hot one, especially for the cooler days. There is a dirt trail about a mile long you can walk through. It's an easy, flat trek, beautiful in the fall, and you can go down to the water from multiple points. There's lots of people fishing in the lake, too. There's plenty of parking on either side of the street, each have their own lot. It's free, too. The staff has been great whenever I visit, and now they have a petting zoo and some small gift shops. It's gotten so much busier than I remember it being and that makes me so happy. A true gem, and I hope their business stays successful. Looking forwardto my next trip to Yates!

The apple smashing began eleven years later. The huge building you enter today was constructed in 1894 when the business focused primarily on cider production. So many changes over the years...yet many things remain intact. Was Harry Yates responsible for starting the tradition of donuts and cider back in the 1930's? Today These days you'll be able to buy Frankenmuth Fudge, Zak & Mac's chocolates and Posey's hot dogs and snacks, all at Yates. They've also added a small petting farm. The list of Yates products has expanded well beyond just donuts. Today, we bought a 1/2 peck of our favourite apples, the honeycrisp, as well as Aged Bourbon syrup, applesauce, pickles, hard candy for the grandkids and even a cool sweatshirt. Cider prep Somewhere along the line they changed their processing to UV light treating which pretty much obliterates the mother at the bottom of the jug and has a definite effect on the overall taste. So to confirm our suspicions we bought a half gallon (with donuts, of course). We were right. Nature trails? There are three immediate trails ranging from 1 to 1-1/2 mile loops We spent an hour on their Railroad Trail a.k.a. The Yates Trail. A mile long walking loop. With plenty of colour. Nothing like a walk with nature. Parking has always been a challenge. There is an overflow across the road. Mostly it's just a matter of patience. Pro Tip: Try to come on a weekday morning. Weekends in the fall are filled with families. The staff was hurried but cordial, as usual. We've always found long lines here. So that's to be expected. The bees were down significantly this year so it was a highly successful day! 10/25
