We went to Uncle G's today in recommendation of a friend. Restaurant was clean and we were greeted promptly. They specialize in New York style pie and Detroit Pan style! Their varied specialties pizzas were available in both styles. Since it was our first time, we wanted to try a variety, so we chose the two slice and a drink special for lunch. I grabbed a New York cheese slice and a Detroit pepperoni. My wife chose a Figgie and a Margherita New York Slice. Nice thin and crispy New York crust, great undercarriage! Detroit was light and thick with excellent frico edge. Sauce was slightly sweet with nice flavor. Cheese was melted nicely with slight caramelization. The Figgie had fig jam, prosciutto, goat cheese, arugula and a balsamic drizzle! It was out of this world! I use figs and prosciutto on my pizza at home but never seen in at a restaurant. Highly recommend! Staff was attentive and answered questions about their Detroit style hydration. Apparently all dough is made daily in house each morning. Restaurant was large, but they had several areas blocked off. Only two available tables for dine in. Not sure if they had an event later that day or not. Daily specials are listed on the menu and all you can eat buffet is on Thursdays. Would highly recommend! Will definitely be back!! read more

I have been hearing so much about this place for the longest so we finally got the chance to try it out! They do pizza by the slice every day until 4 pm but we made it a little after. So we ordered a supreme pizza and we're recommended the deep dish cheesbread. We found out the buffet was discontinued as well so we were a little sad about that. They were extremely kind the entire time and explained it all to us. We waited about 15 minutes and it was absolutely delicious to eat! I loved the supreme pizza and the cheesebread was fantastic. We enjoyed a visit for lunch on a Saturday. They have lunch specials. I had the slice of deep dish and slice of NY style combo. We ate in. There are a couple of tables to dine in. The deep dish was the best. The pizza slice was thick crust, gooey cheese and the meats on top. Sauce is served on the side. Its good too and you can have as little or as much as you want on your slice. The NY style was good but not in the same class as the thick crust. The place is designed for mostly take out. Not sure how I went so long without knowing about this place, but I found it and gave it a try and am happy to report that it's pretty awesome. It's clean, bright, spacious, and has a really friendly crew that can help you navigate its somewhat expansive menu. They've got apps, more than one style of pizza, (Detroit and NY styles), beer and fountain drinks and so many specials that it's borderline confusing. I had the buffet on my first visit and so I got to sample a wide variety of their offerings and would order any of them again. Not sure the names of all the pizzas, but the one with the white sauce and ricotta stood out. Really good. On my 2nd trip I ordered a small, (which is big enough for 2 people), with all the meats, and their burrata. The pizza was quickly cooked to order and came out piping hot and loaded with toppings. Loved it. The burrata came with generously portioned cups of hot honey and a balsamic glaze which really set it off. Good stuff. Will order this every single time I go in the future. Long story short this place has something for everyone, is putting out good food and is an overall nice, casual environment that's worth visiting and could easily become a go-to spot for anyone who frequents the area. I tried the Uncle G's buffet for dinner and it was well worth the price while still maintaining the quality we've all come to know from them. If you've ever wanted to try every pizza they offer, Thursdays are your chance! While they don't have everything out all at once, they're constantly making more pizza to fill up the empty trays. The slices are a little smaller than the usual slices, which is great because you can try a lot more that way. There's also a combo of Detroit style, ny style, garlic knots and desserts. You don't get to just grab your own slice, but you tell the staff what you want and they prepare it for you. The one thing I love about the buffet is that they add some of the toppings only after you choose what you want. That way they do not get soggy. This review is specific to their pizza buffet on Thursdays. Uncle G's has a pizza buffet available on Thursdays during set lunch and dinner time frames. They advertise it as having all of their Detroit style pizza as well as a couple of the NY style pizza. Also present would be rotating appetizers and cinnamon rolls and cookies. The description above is kind of accurate, except for a few issues: 1) They seem to be short-handed, especially for a buffet. I saw 4 employees total manning the register and the back. So often there would be a huge line waiting either for pizza (as they serve it to you at the buffet, it's not self-serve) or waiting to order. 2) Often, there is very little pizza available on the buffet when you hit the prime dinner time...and since buffet only runs for 3 hours at dinner time, it's mostly prime time, ha. Instead of all the variety, only a couple would be available and you would have to wait for a variety you want to come out.....sometimes it never comes out. For example, for over an hour, a NY style pizza never came out....or at least not long enough for you to get a slice if you are not standing there waiting. 3) There does not seem to be a good warming mechanism for the pizza on the bar. So if you settle for an unpopular flavor that's available on the bar because you don't want to wait, that pizza is likely to be cold to lukewarm at best. The first 3 slices I got on my first run to the bar were cold. So...I have heard some people love cold pizzas, unfortunately I am not one of them with all that congealed cheese, cold sauce, and cold toppings. So after that I waited for new pizzas to come out...which means dinner took a very long time. As far as the food itself. If you are able to catch the pizza hot, it's actually pretty tasty. The cinnamon rolls are cold and hard, not at all good. The cookie is good for people that likes very soft centers. There are NO greens or salad of ANY KIND on the buffet! So nothing to balance out the huge carb intake, makes it a pretty unhealthy meal. I did have some rather unpleasant customer service interactions on this visit that would make my visit a one-star experience....and greatly decreases the chance of me returning or bringing family/friends here in the future. However, after some consideration, the chance of the exact same situation happening to someone else is probably not terribly high, so the rating does not reflect that. read more

They have a Pac-Man game and 3 pinball machines in the back corner, as well as a play area for kids. The employees were all smiling and helpful. They had a nice selection of pizzas to choose from too. What I appreciated the most was that for cleanliness from germs there was a buffet sneeze guard preventing you from just grabbing the pizza yourself. The employees got the pizza for you. Uncle G's is a tried and true favorite. We moved away last year and miss it dearly! It was our first stop after my husband had major surgery and our comfort dinner that evening. We've had so many memories with uncle G's because it's simply so good. We took so many friends and visiting relatives because it's not your typical pizza, and because the quality is a blend of nostalgia and deliciousness. We've always been takeout fans but have eaten at the breweries with the food trucks (in varying locations) many times over the years. Now with a brick and mortar location they took everyones favorite pizza and made it even better, with more options. Even though they specialize in Detroit style pizza (medium thickness, cooked in a pan and cut into rectangles) don't overlook their New York style either. The attention to detail in the crust and sauce makes it obvious the uncle himself is obsessed with pizza. In the debate of New York style vs Chicago style pizza my answer has forever been Detroit. This is an amazing take on Detriot style pizza turned gourmet. I think if you think you are going to be getting a cheap slice of pizza you will be upset at the price but i loved it. I visited the food truck while they were in alabaster. The lady taking my order was amazing, and the chef was one of those uncles who you think is mean but he gives you $50 on your birthday type. I've been holding onto this review for some time now and I can't wait for yall to check this one out. Everyone knows how much I love pizza and how I'm always trying to find the best pizza. Uncle G's Pizza has been on my list for a long time and a few weeks ago I was finally able to hunt them down and try their Detroit style pizza for the first time. I got four slices with 3 of them being Margarita, Pepperoni, and a Meatlovers. I'll start with the Margarita pizza since this one was my least favorite. Don't get me wrong it was good just not to my liking. The reason for that was whenever I have had a Margarita pizza it was always basically a thinner crust pizza so the doughyness of it threw me off a bit but like I said was still good still very flavorful. 3/5 Next up the Pepperoni which was probably my favorite. I grabbed the sauce they give you to pour on top and like a Food Wars: character my shirt nearly came off. Everything here was perfectly balances from the amount of Pepperoni to the edge to edge cheese and the marinara sauce! 5/5 The meatlovers slice not much to say here it was great as well you got your sausage, bacon, Pepperoni what more could you ask for besides poring that marinara sauce on top and watching your eyes roll in the back of your head. 5/5 The 4th slice went to Tony and he loved it as well it was a meatlovers slice. If you have not had Uncle G's Pizza before you need to check them out asap which it's their food truck or there new brick and mortar restaurant set to open up March 27 of 2024 in Hoover, AL! Well let me say the reviews where glowing for a reason. The quality of the pizza was great. The soft battery dough perfection. We had the "cool it down add pepperonis lord that was so good. With that large pie came free app (small plate) we got there mozzarella sticks and they were so good it reminded me of the hand made ones in New Haven years ago. My favorite pizza food truck in Birmingham is Uncle G's! This food truck is so special! If you like the thick crust pizza with sauce on the side, this is your go-to. The meatballs are fantastic and the sandwiches are amazing! Don't even get me started on the cinnamon rolls that are just sinful. It's not the cheapest pizza around but you get what you pay for and what you'll get here is a consistently tasty pizza with fresh ingredients. Now a little bit of story time.. I had the pleasure of chatting with Uncle G to recreate a speciality pizza for my pregnant sister who's favorite pizza was discontinued. I called multiple restaurants and no one would make it for her. I reached out to Uncle G and he said he would give it a try. He outdid himself. The pizza was incredible and the service superb. I haven't seen my sister that happy! I couldn't tell if she was crying because of her hormones, or that the pizza was so delicious or if she was just touched that a business cared enough about her pregnancy craving. I think it was a little of all three. Experiences like this is what sets apart a GOOD small business owner from the big box pizza. Uncle G's is a food truck that specializes in Detroit style pizza. I can't say that I've ever had this style of pizza before. I'm glad I gave them a try ......the pizza was really good and so so filling! I ordered two slices, pepperoni and their version of meat lovers( prince). The slices are really dense and the pizza sauce comes on the side. The sauce had a really nice flavor with chucks of tomatoes throughout. Complimented the pizza nicely. I spent $13 on 2 slices. No complaints there but a whole pizza (4 quarter slices) is roughly $16. Depending on which pizza you order. They had several options available. I don't advise trying to drive and eat this pizza once you add the pizza sauce .... It got really mess. My shirt had so many pizza sauce stains when it was all said and done. Yikes! The two gentlemen working the food truck when I visited them at trim tab were really helpful. They were also very informative in explaining their product. Uncle G's is a hit in my book! Went well beyond an average effort here. His attitude was very positive throughout the entire experience. Food Truck 09/30/2021: I wanted to try Uncle G's well before this date but couldn't catch them during the times at Old Time Pottery (Pelham, AL). So, I was glad to see them in the neighborhood. I decided to place an online order for a specific pick up time (easy enough process) for Ty's Pepperoni, add mushrooms and hot honey drizzle. The pizza was ready when I arrived. The sauce is placed on the side but I really couldn't taste the hot honey drizzle, may ask that it's placed on the side if I decide to order again. This pizza is enough to share or eat as leftovers. Soooooo...... Here's the deal- they are advertising pizza by the slice..... also advertising pizza by the slice for $4.00 per slice on Mondays until 9pm. Buuuutttt...... when we arrived at 5:48pm on Monday, we were greeted at the door by an employee advising us that there were no slices after 4pm on Monday. Odd considering we ordered slices on a non Monday after 4pm.....We kindly advised the employee that it still says until 9pm online...and on their social media? 6 people came in while we were there and left after being told the same thing. We stayed and ate nonetheless, but the employee didn't seem concerned that people were not happy that they wouldn't sell slices on Monday after 4m. I mean you advertised it? Customers are leaving? The employee acknowledged that it was advertised, but that they were not going sell individual slices after 4pm. Enough of that part. Look the pizza is solid. I want it to be successful, as I want family restaurants to be successful. I eat all over the country and specifically hunt family owned business that still put love in their food and their service. America needs more of them. The pizza is great and they have done a great job putting the restaurant together. Hopefully they sort out their issues between advertising specials and then delivering them to the customer when they arrive. My husband had the sliced pizza from the food truck, and he said it was the best pizza he has ever had. So, he ordered the large meat lovers pizza tonight 8-7-25 from the Hoover store. It was not good. The pizza was too salty, and it tasted stale not fresh. He went to the store and ordered to go. He waited 20 to 30 mins, so we thought the pizza would be fresh. The pepperoni was very greasy and some of the bacon was burned. We wanted to take it back, but we didn't feel like driving. We also got the cinnamon rolls; they were not good as well.
