I saw Uncle Don on Yelp a couple of months back and had it bookmarked to check out at some point. I was honestly a bit suspicious of all the high ratings, as you usually don't associate Hicksville as a place where you can get good Jamaican food. But always down to give a place an honest shot. The place is a pretty small, grab and go type of place and don't think there was any seating for dine in. I came on a weekend recently and they had lunch specials advertised for $12.50, which are only available on weekdays, unfortunately. I got a small dinner platter of jerk chicken with plantains and rice and beans. Total came out to $14.66. This was the price with cash, as I think the guy said there's an extra charge w/ credit card. I went home to eat and opened up my platter. It seemed like the 'small' size platter had a decent amount of food in it, which was a good sign. The jerk chicken smelled pretty good and I was excited to dig in. Upon trying the chicken, the jerk flavoring and marinade tasted really good, however I was disappointed that the chicken was extremely dry. It wasn't just one piece either; all the chicken pieces were very dry. I didn't get the impression that the chicken was freshly prepared. The rice / beans and plantains weren't terrible, but they were both very dry as well. Overall, my platter was somewhat enjoyable, but pretty disappointing. I think the platter is priced a bit high; I'd like to see it at around $12 total w/ tax included and the lunch special to be around $10. Considering I was pretty disappointed with my meal, I would give Uncle Don a 2 star rating for the time being. FYI my friends who got the oxtail and curry goat here said they enjoyed it so maybe will try that if I come back in the future.

I was in the area at my doctor's office and I needed some home cooked Jamaican food. I searched the area on my map and this place had high reviews. I ordered the fried chicken lunch special with rice and peas and a homemade pineapple ginger drink. The homemade pineapple ginger drink was really delicious. The food I was disappointing. I was expecting Jamaican rice and peas but it wasn't because it was yellow and there was no coconut milk in the rice. So I ate some chicken and could not eat anymore. The food was not fresh at all. It tasted like leftovers and not in a good way. I was really disappointed. To pay $20 for a plate of old food that I couldn't eat, I've never had this experience at a restaurant before.

Two thumbs up for this Jamaican restaurant in Hicksville, doing things that's customary and that I'm familiar with. Tameeka has that West Indian friendliness I'm more accustomed to and was a delight to speak with. Without asking, she even provided me a small sample of one of their specials. Offering samples is a great way to express confidence in your product and entice your customers to either purchase or return for more. Their steam table has all sorts of proteins, veggies and sides. Plus, Spicy Beef Patties, Jamaican Pastries, most of your favorite D&G (Desnoes & Geddes) Jamaican flavor sodas are available. All the touches you expect from a Jamaican restaurant. Small table for two inside, plus outdoor seating available during those non inclement days. Only a few minutes from my office allows for picking up to bring back to The Bronx. Which makes it well worth the trip.

Was really craving Jamaican food, and found this on Yelp. We tried a big portion of their menu. Overall I thought it was good, but definitely some missed items. The staff was friendly and fixed our orders promptly. Each entree came with a large portion of rice and peas, plantains, or steamed veggies. You can't go wrong with either sides. I liked the plantains. Entrees: Large oxtail - Huge portion of oxtail and by far my favorite dish of the night. The oxtail was flavorful and tender. Stew chicken - Also another solid dish, the chicken was tender and the flavor was delicious. Jerk Pork - Super spicy, and good flavor. Jerk Chicken - Same flavor, but not really spicy and it was super dry. Fried Chicken - The flavor was good, but I think because it was steaming inside the plate, the coating became soggy. Jamaican Beef Patty - Def skip. The meat was dry and there was a lack of flavor. Jamaican Spicy Beef Patty - Same dryness as the mild beef patty. Coco Bread - Huge skip. It was dry, and flavorless (and even a bit of a plasticky taste). No one wanted to finish it.

In NYC for family business and had a craving for Caribbean food. Looked for a place near the hotel I was staying at and found good reviews for Uncle Don's Kitchen. Walked in the door and the smells of Jamaica and Trinidad came flooding back. While my brother and his girlfriend ordered roti, curry beef and chicken, I ordered three beef patties (since I'd be flying back home the next day). All I have to say is "YUM." Excellent choice and delicious food.

The food here was so delicious. I really can't believe how everything was so hot and fresh even when I got back to my hotel. The chicken was so tender and flavored with all the right spices. We also loved the mac and cheese, cabbage, and spicy beef patties. This was a great spot for carryout! They made everything right here in the kitchen. so it only took about 10-15 min to get our order.

I was in New York for the weekend and came across Uncle Don's while looking for lunch. It is a very small restaurant with 2 small tables inside near the door and seating outside. It is best to pick up and go, unless you don't mind sitting in the sun. The food smelled really good upon entering the restaurant. Everything is already made, so it doesn't take long once you order. Uncle Don and his daughter run the restaurant. They were both really nice. We ordered curry chicken dinners, a spicy beef patty, and pineapple sodas. You have the choice of white rice or rice and peas. The plantain was thick cut and not sweet like I like. Everything else was really good.

Thanks to fellow Yelper, Andie! I wouldn't have known about this place if I didn't see her check-in and the wonderful things she wrote about it. I've always loved Jamaican food, I even went to Jamaica last year but unfortunately, there's no, not even one Jamaican restaurant near me. I live 20 minutes away from here so it isn't too bad. I seriously wanted to try everything on the menu. The girl, Tameka, who helped me out was so friendly & nice. I asked if I could do a la carte for the oxtail in additional to my platter, she explained that they cannot due to the high cost and limited quantity, understandable. Oxtail and stew chicken are only in platters and everything else could be ordered by the lb. They also have lunch specials. I got the oxtail and jerk pork platter with rice & peas & plantain, beef patties and the curry chicken with roti. I actually ordered steamed vegetables with the oxtail but she gave me someone else's order with plantain by accident, not a big deal. The oxtail & gravy with the rice & peas was so good, perfectly seasoned and cooked. It was the best tasting oxtail I've ever had! The jerk pork was also really good, it was spicy, spicily yummy as well as the curry chicken (not spicy), both were tender and flavorful. The beef patty was okay, I've had better. Generous portions and the medium size is quite large & very filling. Finally some authentic Jamaican food on Long Island! Can't wait to come back for more.

In a word: Delicious! Uncle Don's Kitchen has only been open for about 2 months and I am already a fan. This is a family owned business, specializing in Jamaican cuisine. They originally started off as a catering business but due to customer demand, they opened their own restaurant! This is more of a casual takeout place, and not a sit-down, waiter service restaurant, however, they do have some counter/stool seating outside. Super friendly and welcoming customer service! There's such a homey, feel-good vibe at this place! Uncle Don's has a huge menu, and deciding what to order is a challenge since everything sounds great! I'm talking oxtail, curry goat, jerk chicken, jerk pork, rasta pasta, roti...roti?!?! Where can you find a good roti on long island?!?! I mean, the delicious list of offerings go on and on! (See my photos of their menu, and try not to drool). So after careful consideration, we ended up ordering their "oxtail combo", which comes with your choice of one additional protein (jerk chix, chix curry, goat curry, stew chix or jerk pork). It also comes with your choice of either white rice or rice & peas, and your choice of salad or sweet plantains. Whoaaa, what a meal! This one platter can easily be two or three meals! This combo platter is listed as $25 but I was charged $25.95. Not a big deal but just thought I'd mention this. This was a delicious meal and I'm so happy we finally have a great Jamaican restaurant on Long Island!! The oxtail and goat curry were fall-off-the-bone tender, and full of flavor. The sweet plantains were a little too sweet for me but delicious nonetheless. On my next visit, I'll try their Roti and maybe jerk pork...and maybe the Rasta pasta...and oh, how about the Mac n cheese? Omg, choices, choices. Haha Looks like I'll be returning several times! :-) Thanks to Uncle Don's for the complimentary Pineapple Ginger Juice! This was fantastic. They also have an Island Fruit Punch. Both beverages are homemade and natural; no added sugar, except a little honey. The Pineapple & Ginger Juice was not overly sweet and had a strong ginger taste, so if you like ginger, this is a must try! All-in-all, Uncle Don's Kitchen is a must try and a welcomed addition to Long Island. See you next time! P.S. Uncle Don's Kitchen is located a few doors down from I Am Nacho Mama!!
