Talk about the Aloha Spirit! I'm only in town for the day until our ship leaves this afternoon. Walking through the town of Lihue I found this store and wouldn't you know it! They have exactly what I was hoping to find somewhere, Disc Golf equipment! Then I find that the store is closed today! This is a shared operation with a Barbecue business and the other half being Disc Golf. Well, it turns out that staffing issues had occurred and the only one staff member there was running the barbecue. Bummer. The Mrs ended up knocking on the closed doors and the proprietor came to see what she wanted. She explained I was hoping for some discs for my son who is an avid player, and as luck would have it, he stopped cooking long enough to help me purchase a couple of discs! Oh man that was so cool, plus he knew his stuff and helped me pick out two top quality discs. I got two drivers. One initial driver and a custom design fairway driver that they designed! At 171 for their custom disc, and 167 gr. for the other, these two will be seeing some use when we hit the mainland. While we're doing this, ah, the smell of the food started wafting over, but he was not nearly ready yet to start serving. I appreciate so much how this gentleman went out of his way to help a tourist pick out some gifts, when clearly he needed to be in the other side of the business managing his barbecue. Located in a small retail space on the first floor of the Harbor Mall, Uncle D's BBQ is a combination BBQ, retail beer, and disc golf equipment retailer. My wife and I were staying very close by, so we made it a point to visit it during our week long stay in Kauai. The concept and beer selection was great, but the food tasted no different from what one would get from a cafeteria. It's important to check their hours when their food is offered, since it differs from their open hours. Currently food hours are 10:30 - 14:30, W-Sa (opening one hour earlier on Saturday). We came on Friday, and walked around the mall until their kitchen opened. It wasn't too busy yet, so was able to order and pay. While waiting, added two cans of alcohol, at which time the food was ready. Brought everything out to the common outdoor tables that can be used for dining. There is a large choice of local beers in cans, and we chose two: Lanikai Brewing Company's Pualani Sour Ale ($6) and Paradise Ciders (Honolulu HI)'s Lei'd Back Lilikoi ($3.50). Both were good, and would absolutely use this store to buy local beers to take back home in the future. Both of us love brisket, so got the brisket sandwich a la carte for $18.99, and added a side of cole slaw ($3) and Mac Salad ($3). It was a medium sandwich to begin with (used a hoagie type soft bun), but with so much bbq sauce mixed with the chopped brisket, it became more of a bbq sauce sandwich. The sauce itself was good, and the chopped brisked seemed OK, but the ratio was way off. The sides were OK with small portions. For $24.99, should have gotten better...even in a tourist area of Hawaii. read more

The BBQ is good, but the service is A+, truly very friendly, thoughtful people working here. I don't think I've ever been to a disc golf / BBQ joint before, so points for that novelty. The disc golf component was actually the selling point for my partner - he was looking for a new driver and the shop had a great variety to choose from. An employee who I think was Uncle D (his 'stache matched their branding) was really knowledgeable in helping my partner choose a new disc. As for the food, the pulled pork sandwich (more like a sub, it was a big boy) and the two sides of mac n cheese and kale were tasty and a great value. My meal weighed like 2 lbs, I was so full afterwards. They also have a great selection of beers and ciders that are very reasonably priced. I wanted something not too sweet and Hawaiian, and was steered towards a very refreshing lilikoi cider. Easy pick up BBQ with excellent flavor and large portions! We ate at the tables in the shopping center. They had a huge variety of beers and other non-alcoholic drinks. Wanted to try this place for a while but it wasn't open . Small spot w a limited menu. There was a line of old and young from all races when I went in which is a good sign but who doesn't like bbq? Friendly cashier . I tried a pulled pork sandwich which includes 2 sides for about $17.00. Coleslaw is on the side or on top . There are benches to wait outside and different drinks for you to choose from. Food took a while to come out but probably bc it was so busy. The sandwich was a small sub w chips underneath so price is right. Macaroni salad was solid but not a fan of the baked beans .will go back so I can try the brisket and Mac and cheese. read more

Really good KC style bbq here on Kauai. I had a pulled pork sandwich spicy, with a kale salad and Mac and cheese. Loved it. The pulled pork was just as good without the bun as with! That is the test of great pulled pork. The kale salad and Mac and cheese were both great sides. I had slaw on my sandwich wich was a great addition. My wife had the Philly- she loved it too. We were in a pinch trying to get to the airport and were in the mood for Hawaiian BBQ and stumbled across this store - which is a compilation of a restaurant, liquor store and surf shop. It was good, but there are no modifications that were permitted to the meals. It is very basic as it is a one-man shop. I prefer access to condiments, etc when I eat and would have loved options. The food also takes a while to get as again, one person is working there. It is great if you have time and are not a picky eater. read more

Uncle D's Kauai Disc Shop and BBQ Restaurant in Lihue has the best BBQ on the island. It was so delicious that we ate there 3 times during our 2 week stay. It's a take out place so you can take your food to the beach or eat at the shaded patio area nearby. We had the Mac-n-Cheese Boats with brisket, pulled pork, and shredded chicken. My hubby bought a disc- if you're into disc golf, they have an amazing collection to choose from. They also have coolers with drinks and sell delicious BBQ sauces and hot sauce. They serve lunch on certain days/hours (currently 10:30am-2:30pm) so check the website for info. Because the food is so good, they sell out of items so you may want to go earlier in the day. We came in right at closing (unknown to us at the time) but staff was still very friendly and offered us a few options they could still get us . We were happy with that and it sounded great and then tasted great as well . We bought 2 bottles of their sauce which he stated was TSA APPROVED, which we needed since we were traveling back home . TSA stopped me and tried to take them and I said nope, look at the oz! And he gave them both back to me. :) They also came in a coozie, which ended up being more helpful than ever . Stumbled upon this place via Yelp, but what really drove us in was the fact that they are also a disc golf shop; largest in the state actually! I'm a BBQ snob and my husband is an avid disc golfer so this was a match made in paradise for us. The food did not disappoint; we arrived around 2:45 and were told that the kitchen closes at 2:30 but the owner happily accommodated my hunger and craving for BBQ. We were hesitant at first because it is just a little shop with disc golf supplies and didn't really look like a restaurant. But it smelled really good. Uncle D's started off as a food truck at the Kaua'i Community College Farmer's Market, but recently added this brick and mortar location in Harbor Mall. The food truck is good, but--and I don't know if it's because I'm biased towards brick and mortar--this restaurant is great! On the day I tried it, I just happened to wear a white linen shirt and dared to eat. I had the sliced brisket sandwich. I normally don't like my bread toasted, but it goes well with the sliced brisket and perfect amount of barbecue sauce--my white shirt was spared! This is also the most tender brisket I've ever had, beating out the legendary brisket at the now-defunct Sweet Home Waimanalo in Puhi. I opted for the spicy barbecue sauce, but it didn't have as much heat as I expected (mild and medium are the other options). They have a good selection of sides (coleslaw, macaroni salad, macaroni and cheese, and baked beans. I chose the coleslaw and macaroni salad (yum, chopped onions!) My friend ordered the macaroni and cheese boat with sliced brisket, and it's quite a generous serving of everything. The owner is a hardcore Frisbee golf player, and they sell gear in the restaurant, adding a pretty cool kitschy feel without overdoing it. Incredible food and service! This was a great find. They have tons of smoky meat, canned/bottled craft beer, discs, and even gifts to take back home. Staff did a great job of explaining all the food options and we settled in two pulled pork sandwiches. They were amazing, and came with some great chips, and your choice of two sides. Plenty of food. We really wanted to try the brisket, but they only smoke that on certain days, and can run out FYI. After you order you can sit outside in the courtyard of the mall and enjoy the people watching. THIS is why we can never move to Kauai! What kind of depraved mind chooses to layer wonderfully smoked meats over a CalKing sized bed of macaroni and cheese? Who thinks to themselves 'This island is not beautiful enough on its own, there needs to be one more beautiful thing'? Around this nation thousands (millions?) of couples live under the haze of conflict regarding such matters. The idea of jackfruit as compromise, genius, still evil but genius nonetheless. Were we to choose to reside on this island it would most likely be a year, maybe two, they would find our swollen corpses covered with flies, reeking of sauce and smoke. Want this for dinner? No way!
