I wish they offer the ability to do half stars as I would probably mean into the 4.5 star for umami. I added pictures of the tempura udon and sushi. I forgot to take a picture of the Korean Mandi dumplings which were excellent... prices were good and they were offering a buy one sushi roll. Get one free so it's hard to pass up. ordered take-out from here so cannot speak on the dine-in experience... however, when I order my food one of the items was removed from my order without any notification. So, I ended up having to place a second order. I ended up getting the chicken pad thai and it was okay. It was not extremely favorable and seemed like it was lacking something. When I arrived at the restaurant, what I could only assume was the staff was standing out front smoking cigarettes and it made me extremely uncomfortable. We ordered takeout for spicy chicken. It was delicious. The spice level was very good until I got to the bottom where the sauce was!! The sauce was a little too spicy for me. It had great flavor but hot! The salad was good. It was a cross between salad and slaw with a lite ginger dressing. I would definitely recommend. read more

This is definitely one of my favorite restaurants. The ceviche is the best I've ever had. I do wish the portion was bigger for the price. I don't have too many complaints when it comes to this restaurant. No the servers don't know English very well but they are genuinely kind and also accommodating. If you need something less spicy, let them know and they will adjust. Another thing I would like to see is better hot tea... Over all the ingredients and execution is very good!!!!! My companions, and I decided to try this Pan Asian restaurant. For appetizers we ordered the Eggrolls, Crispy Soft Shell Crab, and Pot Stickers. Our entrees were the Hambarrk steak, Seattle Teriyaki Chicken and cheese fried pork cutlet. The eggrolls were very good, and the traditional goyza dipping sauce added quite a bit of flavor. The potstickers were nicely filled, with a nice texture. That dipping sauce was also very good. The crispy softshell crab was covered in a tempura batter on a salad. There was a lot of salad, but the crab was very tasty and a nice size. The hambarrk steak was essentially a Salisbury steak. The french fries were home cut while this steak was covered in a gravy. My companion enjoyed it, but I didn't find it to be anything extraordinary. My other companion enjoyed the schnitzel, a.k.a. Cheese fried pork cutlet. It was a mystery why the word "cheese" was in the description since there was no cheese. It was, however, a very well fried schnitzel. My companion ordered it because it was noted as a "best seller" but after the meal was over, wondered why because it was not very "Pan Asian." Still, it was a very good schnitzel. The Seattle teriyaki chicken was very good and had a nice brown sauce. I'm not sure why it has Seattle in the name since teriyaki chicken would have been sufficient. The service was very attentive and friendly. We had a young lady and a young man who made certain that our glasses were full and that we didn't want for anything. The service was a little interesting in that the dishes came out one at a time instead of all at once. That seem to be the way the service went since I saw other tables get the same treatment. The menu is extensive with a number of sushi options, Korean staples and a number of noodle dishes. From the menu, it looks like you could go pretty hard-core in the seafood department. The restaurant is in a strip mall with a number of TVs on the wall running the usual Internet stuff. One TV was running animal videos, another was running, uplifting human stories, and another was running some K-pop videos. We arrived a little before seven and had no problem getting a table, but it definitely filled up quickly after 7 o'clock. Spicy Pork was fantastic. Bulgogi was very average to poor, with little flavor and dried out beef. Worst bulgogi I've ever had. The filet mignon with fried rice was excellent. Auburn rolls were really good, and so were the potstickers. Service was excellent and ambiance is very good. read more

Umami muddies the waters a bit by calling what they do "Pacific rim cuisine," which is an attempt to reconcile a pan-asian menu that would seem, under other circumstances, inauthentic to a specific region. It is simultaneously Korean, Japanese, Thai, and whatever else it needs to be. Under different circumstances that would raise alarm bells in my head, that this is maybe some rough butchering of multiple ethnic regions in an Alabama backwater. But the good news is that the atmosphere is pleasant, the food is tasty and well-presented, and there is an appreciation of many ingredients that is thoughtful and knowledgeable. The takoyaki, for instance, is a really fun textural experience, covered in what appears to be a remoulade and a dusting of bonito flakes. The end result is tangy and savory and rich, giving you a hint of the ocean even as you take a bite of what is, by other appearances, something akin to a hushpuppy. This trend of thoughtful compromises seems to hold true across the menu, where nothing is precisely what you'd at a restaurant catered to a single region's cuisine, but none of it is simply tossed out as an afterthought. I do wish that the sushi menu had more traditional fare on it -- you can get a number of fancier rolls that feature cream cheese and frying and all that sort of new-fangled American trappings, but no salmon. And the only tuna roll offered is a spicy tuna. But it's still possible to get simple, clean flavors from it, even if it does not have all the offerings from a traditional sushi bar. TVs on the wall seem dedicated to a whole host of different programming. One of them seems to constantly be showing pets, another niche sporting events like strongman competitions, and another seems to mostly be kpop videos. So if you absolutely have to watch football, you may have to go to Moe's a few doors down. For everyone else: there's a lot to like here. read more

5 stars on every aspect. Food, service, freshness... I always take long to decide what to order because every time I go I want to try something new, but I also want to eat what I had the time before. Their menu always keeps you coming back! This is me and my husband's favorite place to celebrate special occasions! Last time we went the chef came to our table to see if we had enjoyed our food. I secretly think we ordered so much food that they couldn't believe we were going to finish it all, they even had to add a table to fit all the dishes we ordered. This place sells the best spicy Korean seafood noodle soup I've ever tasted. The other menu items are tasty as well. Their take on pad thai is unique...there was yellow radishes added in it-it added a textural contrast to the noodles, but the bean sprouts alone would have been enough. I am shocked this place doesn't have all 5/5 reviews. I adore Umami. I love ramen and this place is doing it right. I have been here twice now with friends and family and ordered the Nagasaki Ramen both times. We also have had the other types of ramen and the ceviche appetizer. Best ceviche I've had in a long time! The Nagasaki ramen is very spicy but absolutely incredible. Ask for some of their pickled radishes to go along with it. The other ramens will satisfy those who don't tolerate spice as well as they are also delicious. My husband and I drive 30 minutes each way to eat here and it's totally worth it. The atmosphere is very relaxing and the bar looks gorgeous. Equal to (or possible even greater than) the quality of the food is the service. We have received outstanding service both times we have dined at Umami. My husband and I both agreed today that the level of service is that of what we would expect to see at a high end fine restaurant. They are doing great things here. I highly recommend! read more

After church my friends and I decided we were going to have some sushi. Service was a tad slow considering we weren't asking about drinks/appetizers like you typically are in the food service industry. Started off slow, but decided to let the experience ride out. Food eventually came out, and everything was smooth until my friend's Karrage (fried chicken essentially) came out. She opened a piece of the chicken, and it was a very bright purplish pink. Disgusting, for lack of better word, is the only phrase I can use to describe the appearance of this chicken. My friend sent back the plate, and ordered terriyaki chicken instead, due to the fact she was astronomically disgusting by her first choice. Keep in mind, the terriyaki was a more expensive option. The chef recooked the karrage and took it off her bill, which was a positive, I guess. However, she had to pay for the teriyaki, which I feel just placed a sour taste in all of our mouths considering this plate was more expensive. Do not count on us returning To this "sushi" restaurant. There's not even a vegetable roll, smh. read more

Was recommended this place by a few people so we checked it out last week. We've been back 2 more times already. Both the tonkatsu and curry ramen are phenomenal. Indian butter chicken is quite delicious and creamy with some great spices, but it's quite different from the butter chicken options I've had elsewhere. The pad Thai is really great too! They have a few gluten free options like the Indian curry and pad Thai. You can also get the ramen broth without the noodles. We love this place. Delicious food, reasonable prices and great service. Delicious! The chef brought out a complementary bowl of crab chowder( my youngest and my husband dislike crab) it was amazing the entire family devoured it. We had 4 entrees and all had great flavor. I've been meaning to give Umami a try for a while and wish I had come sooner! Upon arriving, the staff was very friendly and we were seated right away. Everything we got - from our appetizers to entrees to desserts - were the definition of "umami." Sometimes it's difficult to achieve that savory taste without going overboard or getting too salty but all of the dishes were balanced and delightful. I was so full but refused to leave without cleaning my plate since I know such awesome flavors are often hard to come by! Chef Daniel came out to meet us which was super thoughtful and I respect that he took the time out of his schedule to do that. We can't wait to come back for more!! They stand by their name as all the dishes are definitely in that umami palette. Their Char grilled oysters were amazing; perfectly cooked and topped with a good amount of cheese. Their baby arugula salad with seared ahi Tuna and their seared ahi tuna were very flavorful for such light dishes! Small but packs a lot of flavor. Their crispy soft shell crab, and Goon Mandu were fried to perfection the sauces with both dishes complimented well. Nagasaki jjampong was great along with the shoyu ramen. They served mu (pickled radish) with the Nagasaki ramen, but I thought it went well and complemented Korean spicy pork bowl. This place has a very Korean menu but so good! Hopefully, more folks will be adding umami to their vocabulary as well as their restaurant rotation. After going for the first time on Saturday for lunch, I came back the next day with my in-laws who were in town visiting. They live in California. They're originally from Japan. This could have been a disaster, but Umami delivered a great meal. Awesome! Apps: -Chargrilled oysters: expected these to be more like Acme chargrilled oysters... not similar at all, but still decent -Seared Ahi tuna: the ponzu (citrus soy sauce) is refreshing -White Tuna carpaccio: loved it -Sunshine Bite: good for folks hesitant about raw fish -Umami crispy rolls: not bad. the sweet chili sauce is yummy. would prob skip next time. Ramen: -I LOVE ramen and have no problem driving 2 hours to ATL for a delicious bowl. The ramen here isn't the same caliber, but good enough to hit the spot. I tried the tonkotsu, miso, ans shoyu broths. All decent, but will likely stick to tonkotsu or miso. -The noodles can be slightly soft. I prefer them a litlte more firm. Entrees: -Charbroiled lemongrass pork chop: nice flavors. the pork was slightly under, but still delicious. -Umami Korean BBQ T-bone: well cooked, good flavors, hearty portions. Dessert: -Strawberry delight: delicious. loved it. not too sweet. strawberry whipped cream is yummy. Kids Menu: -a ton of food. would be enough for an adult. The dessert (fried Oreo and fruit) comes all together. Will ask them to get it at the end of the meal next time. Otherwise, the kids will eat the dessert first and/or the Oreo gets soggy by the time they get to dessert. All in all, this place is great, and I'll definitely be back. read more

If I could give 10 stars I would. This restaurant is FANTASTIC! Some of the best food I've EVER HAD! I'm always looking for new places to eat, so when my mom came to visit me in college we decided to try this place out. The service was outstanding with a warm welcome with hot towels. The hot green tea was so good to warm you up from the cold outside. The chef was so nice and friendly he even gave us an appetizers on the house and man it was the best food I've ever had. Our waiter was so kind and nice and the whole vibe of the place was just so cute and lovely. I will be back in the future and I hope everyone gives it a try. Prices are good too.
